Jeffrey J Carter is a great example of a people's attorney. He fights for tenants in Berkeley,CA. Several example: # The elevator was not operating at the apartment complex. . One of the tenants was disabled and needed the elevator to get to her apartment. Mr. Carter took the apartment complex owner to court and the elevator was fixed. *One of the tenants wanted to pay rent with a check. The owner wanted everyone to use electronic payment. Mr. Carter sent the owner a letter citing a law they would allow the tentant to pay with a check. Mr. Carter comes to bat for the tenants pro bono. He is an outstanding example of a lawyer for the people. read more

I called Jeffrey Carter to talk about a complicated situation and not only did he advise me on what I could do, which is very little, he regaled me with tales of his activism over the years and listened to my tales as well. We disagree that the key to moving from a war economy to a peace economy requires the removal of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House, preferring instead to focus on Trump, who is out of office by the way, just like Pelosi does. The Democrats are the party of war except for the "squad" which needs to be enlarged 100 fold so that we can stop funding the Pentagon and start funding our human needs and care for the planet. Pelosi just approved another $25 billion for the Pentagon. Jeff, stop looking the other way and look at who the true enemy of peace is. read more

I didn't engage Jeffrey Carter as my attorney so like Jay G I'm writing a 'lightweight' review of my experience speaking to Jeffrey on the phone when I was having landlord problems and the tenant's rights organizations all said, "sorry, you're not homeless so we can't help you." Jeffrey was super busy and somewhat brief with me -- but he did take the time to talk to me, unlike about seven other so-called tenant's rights attorneys who blew me off, (one particular asshole is Greg Brock). Jefferey listened to my situation, told me what he thought I should do, and said if that didn't work to make an appointment w/ him and he'd "charge me a dollar ninety-five to write a dollar ninety-five letter" to my landlord. I didn't end up needing the letter, but basically he completely sorted me out when everyone else failed. read more

Our first experience of coming to the USA was having our rental deposit stolen by our landlord. Further to this, the landlord alleged we owed them a whole pile of cash for totally fabricated damages. Despite this set back we were well aware that litigation basically started in this fine country and so off we went to hire ourselves an attorney. We did not have much money or time and so we were looking for someone to provide us with swift guidance. Happily we found Jeffrey, albeit not on Yelp! This guy was great, he provided us with all the information such that we could go to the small claims court and get our money back. He was well versed in landlord and tenant disputes; to make things better he was really responsive to email and did not charge us extra for this. We managed to get our full rental deposit back and and we were charged only for an initial consultation fee. I called Mr. Carter's office 4 times and only spoke with a human being once: a legal assistant who returned my call and was not encouraging or helpful about my chances of getting representation from the office. This was on a Wednesday. I felt some urgency in my case I am evicted with a slim chance of getting a reversal or reconsideration from a judge. I wanted to know if Carter would take my case or not or recommend someone else if he was too busy. The Thursday after that I attempted to visit his office he was out with no staff in and the only option was to leave a message on an answering machine which I didn't do. I went to the Post Office around the corner on Allston Way and sent relevant papers with the repeated request to contact me and let me know his interest Yes or No. The USPO person told he would receive my envelope the next day; I sent it by certified mail. THERE WAS NO PHONE CALL FROM HIS OFFICE ON FRIDAY, nor on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. I called his office on Tuesday and Thursday asking for a response. I called his office yesterday, Friday, and asked for a call by late afternoon. I waited until after 6:00 pm...still no callback. I called his answering machine around 7:00 pm after consulting with a labor lawyer friend and left a message that there was no need for him to call me back I would use another lawyer. Fortunately on the Sunday after the previous Friday I talked with another attorney friend who does general practice law. After a detailed discussion, he told me I had a great case siting code sections. The black clouds parted for me. I will now take my case to Ben. A good lawyer is worth his price for the utility of his/her service. People go to lawyers at some of the worse moments in their lives: a divorce, a criminal charge, disability, personal injury, not to mention the true horror of immigration. People are looking for decent treatment. I did not get decent treatment from Mr. Carter's office. Someone dropped the ball. read more

Amazing. Not in a good way. I really was impressed on my initial call, he seemed passionate concerned but "too busy" as a result of "procrastination" and "putting too much on my plate", so he gave me 5 other attorney's to call, one who's contact phone number was no longer working. Another was to an attorney who's assistant pretty much screened my call and they gave me a "we might be calling you back, but not really" type of feel when I spoke to them, and I haven't heard back, but ultimately 5 dead ends. My review is negative because that's the only thing I have at the end result of my call back to him today. Mr. Carter says "Oooooh so you called them all and they are all too busy? Well I am too, I can't even talk anymore on the phone..." I wouldn't call him if you are looking for help, if you want to talk to an Attorney long enough for him to say I can't help you, then you should try him. read more
