I have been here during Christmas but this was my first time experiencing it for Halloween. I read a lot of reviews about this venue being too small. It is definitely smaller than the Christmas one, but it wasn't that bad. I still found it enjoyable. There are 10 different themed walk throughs. My favorite was definitely the Pumpkin Forest and the Dia De Los Muertos Ofrenda. You were able to write a note to a loved one that has passed and put it on the Ofrenda. They also had an open area with a bunch of different food/drink booths. Each booth sold something different like hot food, snacks, desserts, hot chocolate, and even alcoholic beverages. Tickets are a bit pricey for a walk through. We paid $70 for my husband and I. However, it's a great place to take the family to create memories or even a date night. read more

CARVED OPENS TODAY, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2025 ========================================= Get your tickets online in advance. I would recommend getting tickets for the earliest showing because parking gets a bit crazy as the evening goes on. They have a few new exhibits this year in the big lawn area where all the food booths are. There are some cute wood carved ghosts that Chainsaw Jenna created. There are also some other totem pole type Halloween characters. Your little kids will have fun running around the hay bale maze. Grab something to drink, if you have a designated driver, and watch them run around for a bit. They will sleep well after that. read more

For my first time visiting, I must say Descanso Carved was a very fun experience for my family and I. They just opened up this new restaurant/bar inside "farmland" that had great bar eats and seasonal drinks for the adults. This was a great way to set the tone before starting your walk in the garden. The Carved Garden experience was great as I can appreciate a Dia De Los Muertos shrine for our beloved that are no longer with us and the trail itself was fun and very unique. In my opinion this was a better trail than NIGHT of the Jack and had more fun spooky attractions for kids and adults alike. It is alittle expensive but if you must choose between this and Night of the Jack, I would say choose Carved at Descanso Garden. read more

Opening weekend! Sunday tickets are $27 per person. Next weekend they go up to $37! Make sure to make reservations before you come. Bring mosquito repellent. Grab a spiked coffee or hot chocolate drink with some delicious pastries from Jones Coffee Roasters. It will make waiting for your entrance time a breeze! Another diversion while you wait is to visit the gift shop. So many cute chachis! There are lots of fall themed and spooky souvenirs to purchase including light sabers to cut through the darkening gardens. All in all a fun-filled evening or date night at Descanso Gardens is sure to be had by you and your BOO! read more

Sometimes, when i experience something small or grand, I feel a jolt of wonder that rushes through my being. This place did not offer such a awe-filled moment, despite that, walking the Descanso Gardens, with my friend Conrad, was relaxing, awakened my imagination and was, in sum, a whimsical stroll through light-hearted, spooky grounds. At no points did I fear being scared by a hiding werewolf or being chased by butcher with a taste for human flesh. What I loved most about my time here is that the Halloween spirit was present but in forms that I had not experience before. Case in point, there was a statue of an Antebellum Lady- you know, the ones that wear laced dresses that have a full bloom hoop skirt and carry a parasol, in a gentle southern way. But here, at Carved, the Antebellum Lasy had a head that was a pumpkin with slitted eyes. Typically, slitted eyes are made to look menacing, but here the slitted eyes were flirtatious and kind. Couple these nuances with a dress made of out hay, you get an interpretation of Halloween that meshes the old and new, into something fascinating and creatively weird. And, I chose to believe, that creatively weird is one of the defining essences of Modern Halloween because we are not all ready to see Carrie go mad and kill all at a prom, or, dress as a slasher or in sexy kitten attire. Some of us want to view Halloween in fresh artistry. At one point, I entered a garden a glow with a purple hue and moving green lights. The moment had me wanting to dance a ghoulish waltz, in the dark of the night, but alas, I was to scared to dance alone amidst tall trees. However, I did imagine that ghosts all around me were having a ball in the grassy field, adorned with jack o lanterns. Specifically, the ghosts from the Disneyland ride-- a Haunted Mansion. At one point, when one is in a half pod, one passes a fancy dining party for the dead. The ghosts are dancing, in a refined one- maybe waltzing- one can see them. I figured these Disneyland ghosts can leave and dance somewhere else through their ghostly gifts. All those ghosts were having a dance party around me, in this field where eerie yet beautiful music wafted. I captured a video to help the reader understand why i imagined a ghostly party upon my green surroundings. Conrad and I are different kind of people. I am the type of person that can behold a rose, and ponder its life of seed to red, while he sees the rose and moves along, not appreciating the geometry in its petal nor the potential story in its stem and handoff. This different became apparent as he and I sat in a rock and viewed a lagoon with clear water. Near and in the pond there were these lanterns that were pumpkin orange and cut with specific designs, like a forest scene. I took pictures of the lanterns up close, far away, I wanted to find the meaning of these lanterns when I stopped and ponder their intricacies. Reflecting at such a level, felt appropriate next to a pond. This is how arrived to see that the trees near the pond were reflected in its water, clearly, almost perfectly, even at night. But in the same pond there was a reflection of a dark tree shadow. The reflection was now, not a mirror of land and pond water, but of land and dark shadow, like the pond was reflecting a dark, cartoonish version of a tree, a la noir. This was my favorite area. As one walked, there was plenty to see and admire. Conrad's favorite portion was the one that had small railroads running through a small Halloween town. I share videos of the trains, working, but I felt that these would be better placed in a Christmas scene a la Polar Express. Here they seemed great, but, out of place--- how is Halloween and trains related? I guess, at this point someone can remind me that the reason why I loved this place is because Halloween was expressed in new dimensions, so the connection between train and Halloween can remain unclear but its joyous purpose can be felt by any viewer, if they chose too. And that is both the trick of finding beauty in the everyday, and one of life's most special treats. Eventually, Conrad and I sat inside a gazebo, in a garden with twinkling lights and ghosts. The red lanterns gave Chinese New Year's vibes by accident, I think. They were red to remind folks of the color of blood. Sitting in a small gazebo, with hanging lanterns, like different shaped bubbles of blood, was romantic, in the same way that seeing Dracula's wife putting on a red shade of lipstick is romantic, eery and darkly beautiful with occult notes. If the air moved the lanterns hard, they would remind me of rushing red blood cells. Each ticket was 45.00 dollars which was worth it in my opinion. They also sold food. We had churros, with caramel to dip, and flourless chocolate cake. It was just yummy, in a basic way. But the cool thing is that I felt like I was in an Fall market amidst the booths. For the 4th year in a row, I went to Carved at Descanso Gardens and feel that this year was much better than last. I honestly look forward to it every year and I'm already a big fan of Descanso Gardens in general. It's located up in beautiful La Cañada Flintridge and Carved itself takes place at the Rose Garden area of Descanso Gardens. I would recommend going after sunset because it is especially enjoyable when it is completely dark. It's basically a walking path that has different lights and visual strewn about as you walk. There's also plenty of food and drink. This year we got one of the giant Bavarian pretzels and really enjoyed it and also some of the carnitas tacos and those also hit the spot. Like every year, I strongly suggest getting some hot chocolate as it's always a go to for us. Parking is really easy and it's not very far from the entrance. Also a bonus that it's not a dirt lot. There are a lot of beautiful sites, some were new this year and some I've already seen, but I would say that my favorite is probably the Kraken wreck or the sea snake. I think this would be a great event for people of all ages, but I think it is especially fun for families with young children or for people on a date. I think others could enjoy it as well but I think it is especially fun for those two types. To me it really means fall season has started when Carved is selling tickets so I would highly recommend for everyone to give it a try. I will be back again next year! read more

They really need to reconsider pricing. Total waste of money.. I want my $70 back lol. It's very short and it's packed. There's only a few areas that have some cool pumpkins or attractions but majority of it is just boring. One of the attractions is just lights under trees..? There's just a lot of people and it's so small and short that you need to struggle to catch a peak of something. It's honestly crazy that they charge almost $40 for this. This was our family's first time at Carved. My kids (5 & 7 years old) loved all of it. They loved watching the pumpkin carving, the model trains, the pumpkin house and the mini hay stack maze. There were a ton of young families and plenty of instagramable photo ops. We were here for 2 hours. We probably could have stayed longer but it was past our bedtime. I agree with all the reviews on the price point. The prices of food and drinks were on par with Disneyland or LAX. Luckily we came here after dinner so we only bought $6 hot chocolates for the kids. I also feel the ticket prices are too steep. Luckily we saved a few bucks with the member price but even that was pretty pricey. I think its a fun thing to do once but it definitely won't be part of regular Halloween festivities. read more

5/5 -- Magical Fall Experience! I went to Carved at Descanso Gardens twice in one week ... once with my mom and her friend, and once with my nephew... and both times were absolutely amazing. The whole place is stunning and full of Halloween spirit! The atmosphere is cozy and festive, with crisp fall weather that makes it perfect for a night out. Definitely go after dark ... that's when the lights and pumpkins really come to life. There are so many beautiful displays, music, and photo spots everywhere you turn. It's family-friendly with tons of kids running around, but still fun for adults too. There are food stands, little shops, drinks, hot chocolate, and warm apple cider... everything you'd want for a fall night out. It takes about an hour to walk through the whole experience at a relaxed pace. Overall, it's beautiful, well-organized, and just a great time for all ages. Oh, what a delightful evening it was! We arrived at 6:00 p.m., and our entry was at 6:30 p.m. The parking lot was quite occupied, but we were kindly directed to a parking spot. Upon entrance, our codes were scanned, and immediately we began to see stringed lights and signs reading "food," "sweets," and "beer." We decided to forgo eating anything immediately upon entering. We enjoyed walking through the event. The first thing I noticed as we walked further into the park was an altar set up for Dia de los Muertos. Visitors were allowed to leave kind words for their loved ones. From Coco ! There were numerous pumpkins with a set up everywhere providing ample opportunities for photo taking. Carved is a family friendly Halloween event at Descanso Botanical Gardens. It seems to be designed more as a pleasant evening stroll for younger children, versus an exciting and scary Halloween entertainment venue. So if that's your jam, you'll love it. That said, it's still a fun and mellow activity that would also be perfect for extended family coming to visit, or a change of pace on a date. There are lots of entertaining things for big and little kids to look at and do, from interactive light displays, to a forest trail full of jack-o-lanterns. You can walk through the whole thing in about 45 minutes, but it can take longer. There's no time limit and you can go for a second lap or part of one. As most parents know, young kids can be a ticking time bomb when it comes to things like this! There are snack bars in various locations which serve apple cider, hot chocolate, and other treats. You can also get the drinks spiked if you want. They also have various Halloween items and other baked goods. Nothing here will, or is intended to, scare anyone. It's a fall celebration with some carved pumpkins mixed in. We enjoyed the experience. Five stars. read more

First time coming to this event and it was so much fun! There was so much to see and do for both adults and children. The organization and setup of this event was on point. All throughout the event they had workers helping to guide guests or answer any questions. I also liked that they had snacks and drink stands (non alcohol and alcoholic) setup throughout the event to enjoy as you walked around. Overall it took roughly 45 minutes to walk around everything maybe more or less depending if you stopped or not. My favorite part was the large ofrenda for dia de los muertos that allowed you to place pictures of your loved one or leave a note for your loved one. I highly recommend participating in this. At the end you get to see the artists in action as they work hard to create the incredible pumpkins you see at this event. Lots of adults and children dressed up making it such a fun and festive event. There are a lot of great places to take pictures. I really liked that there were a lot of places to sit if you needed to take a break. Parking is free. Highly recommend this event as a yearly Halloween tradition for the whole family or as a date night. read more

The addition of the model train spooky village was a huge highlight , luved the octopus pirate ship, raven, headless horseman, victorian lady, lochness monster, lighting and spooky-ambient music, etc. what i did NOT like was the price point at $45 pp seemed a bit much and the drinkie i got was a syrupy , flavorless mess, plus the " pumpkin spice" churro was just a regular ol' dried up churro -bleh! -may not go next year if price point stays the same -they should have like a living social/groupon promo code, even the discount for members didn't seem all that significant. read more

First time at carved and last. We came in the late afternoon then had dinner at the restaurant and then saw carved during dusk and night time. I preferred daytime and dusk the best. It's a cute little exhibition but I've seen better. Very overpriced for what you are getting. There's a lot for kids to do but the food area is very underwhelming. I wanted a hot chocolate but it's water based from a powder. If you're going to charge me a premium price then I expect a premium hot chocolate. It was more expensive than a fully loaded Starbucks! Had the churros and pretzel. They were ok. I've had better. Honestly the Costco churro is way better but I'm a practical person. We saw the daytime gardens for about 3 hours which offered nice walks and hikes. It took us an hour to do both dusk and night. Too many people all at once but that's how it goes. Go see it once. Very nice Halloween activity. You can see some of the displays during day time visitor hours and at night (the tickets cost a bit more) after 6 pm when everything gets spookier and the lights are pretty. I never checked it out before, I am glad I saved it for this year! It is very creative, fun, magical! Lots of cool carved pumpinks, the prettiest scarecrows (I Know!), a cute house, a Loch Ness monster on the water, creepy insects and a Dias de los Muertos homage. In years past we attended The Rise of the Jack o'Lanterns at Descanso Gardens several years in a row. That was a stunning event with over 5,000 hand-carved pumpkins. As time went on Descanso decided to take a break and focus on getting ready for their Enchanted Christmas holiday-time event instead. Then came the pandemic and everything changed. Now "Carved" is the new October family-friendly event for Halloween time. We didn't go last year, but decided that this would be a good time to go back. We now have a three year-old granddaughter who loves age-appropriate Halloween activities. No brainer, right? We took the 6:00 first ticket block on a Thursday night. Lots of other families with kids were there at that hour - especially young children. The presentation features lots of opportunities for the young ones to run, jump, pose for pix, and otherwise have fun. Sweet Granddaughter and her companion (her older brother's girlfriend, who we invited knowing that she'd have the energy to help us keep up with SG all night) spent a lot of time in the hay bale maze in one of the first activity zones. They had lots of competition from other kids - from toddlers to school aged. A nearby pumpkin house drew groups to take photos, but we observed from afar, as I think there was a charge for professional pix there. Onward to the largest display of jack o'lanterns set in the Camellia Forest. Yes, as others have noted, many of those pumpkins were faux not real. A little bit of online research revealed why - with our high summer temperatures rising and extending well into October, the real pumpkins would rot too quickly to stay on top of recarving/replacement as had been the case with the previous installations. Also, apparently, there was some vandalism of displays last year of the real pumpkins, so emphasis was adjusted. For us, viewing the overall design layout, accompanied with the ever changing lighting effects, and eerie music - it all worked really well. With the setting in various venues around the gardens, the natural trees and bushes added to the overall visual pizzaz, too. We stopped and took lots of pix along the journey. SG had a blast circling around the trees in the Oak Woodland area. They have wooden platforms surrounding the oaks, with touch-sensitive light circles embedded. When stepped on, the discs change colors, which especially delights younger kids who don't understand the why of it, but sure love that it happens! Wish I'd had a fitness tracker on SG to see how many steps she took in that part of the event! Moving on toward the traditional tulip garden area, there was a transitional space with hanging straw bell-shaped baskets. The way they were lit made it seem like they were magically floating in the air. I really liked the next area with wooden luminaria-style carved shapes. The lighting there was extra effective. The photos came out great with my cell phone camera. Finally, in the tulip garden area the awe-inspiring tribute pumpkins appeared. Images of legends like Queen Elizabeth, Vin Scully, and others who passed away in the last year were featured there. They also paid homage to Batman, "Encanto", and other pop culture icons. Across the path several artisans were showing off their carving skills, near a pond with a giant sea serpent in all its glory. If we weren't seeing this through the eyes of our youngest guest, would it have seemed so amazing? Maybe not to the same degree. Then again, we probably would have picked a later attendance time, which would have had less children running around. All in all, glad that we went back to enjoy this event for Halloween vibes. Also a treat to pop into the gift shop and see the displays and interesting merch they have there for this time of year. By the way, Descanso Gardens members get a substantial discount - we saved $12 per ticket. Thank you very much! read more

Look, I understand that $35 per person is pretty expensive but I looked at all the other events for pumpkins in the area and this was very reasonable. The parking is free and it is not too far away. The only other comparable event was in Calabasas, and I did not want to drive two hours out, pay for the event and parking on a weekend. El Montes reviews weren't great. Descanso is also pretty organized in the parking lot with a lot of attendants. The money you pay here is also going to a good cause of helping maintain these beautiful gardens. If you try to come on the weekend, most of the tickets are sold out at a reasonable hour and also as you get closer to Halloween it's going to be more and more packed. I went on a Wednesday and I bought a ticket for 730pm. We got there a bit early because traffic wasn't as bad. It still took me about 45 minutes to get to this place from LA. Since we have time, I wandered around the front and looked at the store and all the nice snacks and gifts and Halloween appropriate event items they had to offer. The lines could be long on the weekends, so I suggest you eat and drink beforehand. There are also multiple spots inside to buy more drinks, snacks and gifts. The restrooms are in front though, so use them first. Overall, yes, the sea of pumpkins are all fake plastic or foam but what do you expect them to do? You want them to carve hundreds of pumpkins that are going to rot and have fruit flies and mold or do you want a beautiful picturesque area? Carved pumpkins- In the middle of the event you'll also see an area that only has carve pumpkins and yes, some of them are already rotting in our California weather. It appears they are constantly carving giant detailed pumpkins to replace them. There were 2 talented artist carving when I was there. Since I came on Wednesday, it was pretty empty but sometimes we did have to walk around or behind other people to take photos or just to enjoy. Unique things - The Rizome or the green lines of art was very interesting, although not very Halloweeny! It is a cool art concept I guess! I'm the area next to it is an area with glittering greenlight that was beautiful and eerie. They also had an area of spooky trees with fun lights to jump on that makes the tree cackle and a moon.There's also a "maze" for the kids, which really just walks through and is not a maze but the kids around really liked it. Could they have done more and have they done more in the past, I think so I came years ago for Night of the Jackolantern and I felt that theyre were a lot more carved pumpkins along the way, but I think they've done a good job of create a nice atmosphere. Some areas were just lights or bird boxes carved like Jack o Lanterns. Hopefully next year the event will be like it once was... but I bet inflation got them just like every thing and everyone else! It took us about an hour to walk through it all and that was taking your time and sometimes backtracking because we could. Pro tip- It was brisk so bring a jacket! Absolutely do not recommend this Halloween event. Not worth the price for repeated store bought carved pumpkins props and lights. At $45/ticket I am expecting to see a few interactive exhibits or entertainment perhaps geared towards young children (since they sell tickets for them too). It took us a total of 7 minutes to walk the entire event with a 3 year old. Will not be back for future Carved or Holiday events unless some serious thought is put into the entertainment and exhibits. I mean trains and pumpkins..... Really? They'll just throw some Christmas tinsel on those little trains and call it a day for the Holiday event. SMH read more

I thoroughly enjoy going to Carved every year! My family and I make a night of it. The displays are festive and fun and we love stopping for the yummy snacks and cocktails. We also enjoy watching the giant pumpkins being carved right before your eyes. This year we discovered how mesmerizing it is to stand under the Rhyzome art display. read more

I vowed that last year would be the last time. Unfortunately, I am a sucker for Halloween, so I went again this year. They really need to change the name because there is very little "carved" about it. Every year there are fewer and fewer actual carved pumpkins, which is what was the best thing about it. We drove over an hour and we were sorely dissapointed in the experience. The exhibits were just lights in different configurations and large areas of fake carved pumpkins. Though we were two adults we decided it wouldn't even be worth it to take our grandchildren who range in age from 13 to 2 years. Not the least bit scary and actually boring. read more

So disappointed. This event used to feature hundreds of real, carved pumpkins on display throughout the gardens. Hence the name. It was truly magical and something I looked forward to each year. I've been coming to this event for the last 8 years or so. Prices have gone up but they are still reasonable @$32. Parking is free and easy to find a spot. Everything is beautiful. Nothing is "scary, " so this event is family friendly. You can see everything In 30-45 minutes depending on pace. There are drinks , snacks, and cute shops to get fun Holliday items. Im slightly disappointed with the amount of real carved pumpkins . When this event started years ago they were all real pumpkins, now not so much. I get it , we are in hot California and thinks rot quickly, so I'm assuming it's to save money and effort ? Regardless, this is still a super fun holiday event for all ages. read more

Nooooo! You guys, I've last been here in like 2015 and now that I finally came back I'm here to tell you that this event sucks!! It used to be fields of legit hand carved beautiful, awe inspiring pumpkins! I would gawk at them in amazement that these were hand carved. Now, it's fields of fake plastic pumpkins lit up, bails of hay, and little kids running and yelling everywhere! It's for 2 years olds to run around and that's pretty much it. There was a small section containing like 20 painted/carved pumpkins depicting movie characters which looked nice but that's it. These tickets cost over 30 bucks an adult. So the experience here is pretty okay. Parking is free and didn't have any issues finding it. It was in total less than a mile long and I felt like we went slow and completed everything in about 45 minutes. Was reasonably crowded for a Monday and was 32 dollars per person. Some picture moments but a lot of areas were really dark to grab selfies. Was a cool thing to check out once but I highly doubt I'd be back in the future. Such a Great event. If you don't have kiddos, I did notice that the majority of the younger ones come in earlier and then later, the older crowd comes in. Lots of strollers and little ones but that pretty much cleared out by 830. They sell refreshments - you can not bring in your own food or drinks, although no one at the door checked. They have the entire place full of carved pumpkins, cool lighting and various effects. They have artists carving pumpkins in little stations throughout. Never been as disappointed with Carved as I was this year. We've been going for near a decade now, and this is the last time. Parking was a nightmare; a first for us at this venue. The majority of pumpkins this year was of the generic plastic Home Depot variety. Food options were abysmal. Felt like Descanso really just sold their soul this year. read more

We went to Carved October 20, 2024. Free parking and it's well organized. It was nice, BUT it's nothing compared to what it was like 4-5 years ago. Back then the forest was filled with real pumpkins. Now they are all plastic. There's one small area where they have etched real pumpkins. But nothing is really "carved". There are a lot more overpriced food and beverage stands than there were in the past. Really overpriced. I did like the area with the model trains. $45 for tickets. It was ok. My friends loved it because they had never been when there were actual carved pumpkins everywhere. But I was kind of disappointed. read more

0 stars. Just some lights and projections, poor theming. Nothing like the long forgotten Night of the Jack o Lantern. Lanterns overhead in 1 area, green Christmas lights over rose bushes, no autumn theming. Takes 20 minutes to walk through, nothing to see. I asked for my money back and got it. Sadly this was not worth the price. Even if you were buying at the member discount. It's a multitude of the same store bought jack-o-lanterns on repeat...nothing really outstanding. Though some of the props were certainly very intricate, they were few and far between. Drinks were way overpriced as usual for events like this with a very minimal selection of both food and drink. The end was a bit more interesting with the live carving/painting which was neat to watch but really, again, the whole thing is absolutely not worth the price tag at all. read more

Fun Halloween night! Great exhibits, just wish there were more of them! Parking was easy and free, and we were able to go in about 20 minutes earlier than our ticketed time. They had a pop-up cafe at the front where we purchased hot apple ciders - the perfect fall beverage for a cool evening. We went through the whole thing in a little under an hour, but there was plenty more of the gardens left unexplored. If you've never been to the gardens during the day, I'd highly recommend it! read more

Haven't been to this event for 10 years- I think back then it was called "Rise of the Jack-O-Lanterns." Went opening night, and it was pretty disappointing for the $45 ($38 for members) ticket price. Maybe a $20 price point would be more reasonable. Also, paid $6 for apple cider, which was actually hot apple juice. I'm not sure why they call it "Carved" instead of "Halloween-ish light displays." There were very few actual pumpkins, much less carved ones. Some beautiful light displays that you could see in maybe a 15-20 minute walk around. Cool ambient music- that might have been my favorite part. Also, I have to add that I love the gardens and am a member. But this event at $38 pr $45 is a one-star happening. Slash the price point in half and I'd come back and enjoy it. read more
