I am just completing my third grammar class. Based on the assessment test, I needed to start at the very beginning ! I am amazed at how much I have learned. I also completed a 4 day intensive conversation class which was virtual. I was hesitant at first but found it to be excellent! The teaching approach is centered on encouragement. All the instructors I have encountered are wonderful. They are happy to assist and never seem to mind repeating themselves when I struggle. I am excited to attend class and to do the "homework". There are multiple options to help one learn. I just cannot say enough positive remarks about this school. I am looking forward to continuing my journey! Despite all my time in midtown, I have never had the opportunity to pop into this locally owned business before! They have a small parking lot, a couple of spaces for teachers and a couple for those early bird students as this lot will fill up fast! Luckily there is a lot of parking nearby and one can usually find a decent spot. I came by this shop to pick up supplies for one of the online classes they were hosting. Due to covid they are hosting all classes online, which is mostly made up of language classes. You might still have to come by to pick up your text book though so please call ahead before you stop by since their office isn't always open. It was super easy to pick up my items and the young man kept his mask on the whole time which I appreciate. They have so many items for sale in the front part of the school, it was so colorful. I loved the earrings the most! (I wear clip on earrings though- bummer for me!) Outside is a mural of Frida and since I had some falsies on I wanted to mimic her beautiful face in the mural. The class online was so cool and informative- I learn a lot about mexican culture and how to make the sugar skulls from the class. I don't know if they will do this event for the public next year but it cost me only $5 for the skull kit and I bought two so my boyfriend could also make one. During the online intensive, my husband overheard the Zoom class and was shocked at the degree of Spanish spoken and that I was able to follow it and participate. There are reading and conversation sessions available at no extra charge- great ways to speed learning. I cannot say enough about this beautiful school, the teaching approach , and the friendly and supportive instructors. They also incorporate Latin cultures with various events and clarify specific grammar used in different countries- a great advantage for travelers. I went to Casa last night for my first spanish class here in Sacramento. I really, really enjoyed my experience. From the beginning, the school is very flexible and has excellent communication. They gave me a 20% discount AND they told me about the payment plan option through paypal. (Score!) Maria is a very welcoming and wonderful teacher. She's also funny and makes the material interesting. I am enrolled in Basic I and there's a good group of people in there, ranging from professionals to retirees. I feel like it is fun and there is no pressure to be perfect. They also offer intermediate and advanced classes. My kids had the opportunity of participating in a summer camp at Casa de Español earlier this year. My kids are also, often, a handful for anyone other than my partner and I (babysitters beware!). Knowing them and their track record, I reached out in advance to Casa to let them know what to anticipate. Once camp began, we saw some of the anticipated issues crop up and then increase around day two. I was open to phone calls to help try to refocus my littles. This began to stress me out as the calls were frequent. Week one I ended up pulling them for the 4th day, given their poor behavior on day three. I was frustrated and not sure what to do for week two. Given the confines of the physical location of Casa (i.e. no playground on site), my kids, who need their run-around-time, were struggling. We re-calibrated: I came to pick up a little earlier and Casa maximized their volunteer and staff capacity to meet my two's need for individualized attention. The director was understanding and accommodating. She even refunded me for the missed time. Did my kids come out speaking Spanish? Some! They remember the songs and sing them here and there. They remember "rojo". Will I come back to Casa? Probably! While I'm waiting to enroll them in a bilingual program, I see this as the best option for Spanish instruction/exposure. read more

We drive 30+ min each way for my daughter to attend a weekly class with other intermediate Spanish speakers. She was previously working with a tutor on Skype and was ready to quit learning entirely when we found Casa de Espanol, by accident when wandering downtown! She was willing to try a class, and found them to be a lot of fun. She's happy to be there for 2.5 hours on a weekday and her class did an awesome play in Spanish at the end of the session. We went to the Dia de Los Muertos event in October 2016. It was so much fun! It was a free event. They had kid carnival games (cost was under $10 for unlimited games) and a costume contest. I loved that the prizes for the carnival games, they were small toys and NOT candy. My daughter enjoyed the games and the prizes. I WON a raffle prize!!! I was so happy. I usually never win those things. I will be doing the raffle again in 2017, so if you go, don't do them (because I want to win again). Lol. They had hay rides (I forgot the cost). We enjoyed the Dia de los Muertos inspired haunted house tour. It was educational, organized, dramatic and imaginative. A lot of effort was made to transform the facility. Students from one of the beauty school colleges were there. They did Dia de los Muertos makeup for FREE!!! ***************************************************** Review of the bi-weekly Spanish immersion kid's class -The classes are well organized and thorough. -My daughter learned literacy and verbal communication in Spanish. Combining the two (communication and literacy) is so important to nourish a life long desire and ability to keep the language. -She was encouraged to speak and read Spanish. -Classes are small and the teachers really love working with children. - Homework is relevant and reinforces what was learned. - They teach in Spanish. Math, history (of Spanish speaking countries) , grammar, science, customs/culture (of different Spanish speaking countries) and more are all taught in Spanish. The education is well rounded and varied. Services we have used and recommend - Group kid classes, Summer camps (two years, attending every single session), private tutors, cultural events, music classes, dance classes, movie night, fundraisers, ect... Pro tip - The owners are really open and listen to feedback. If you have suggestions or feel that something can be improved on feel free to let them know. They are a small business and (like most small businesses) client centered. I have made a few suggestions over the years and the owners have listened. I love that I have a voice and I love that they genuinely care about the community and want to share the Spanish language and Latin cultures. Pro tip 2 - The tutor individualized each session. I wanted my daughter to learn specific science topics in Spanish (Specifically astronomy and paleontology). She already knew all the concepts in English and it was nice that she had it introduced in Spanish. We did all tutoring sessions with my daughters friend (same age, 6). It saved a little money (cost sharing) and it also made it fun to do it with a friend. Her friend also knew the science topics in English. I have wanted to relearn Spanish for years. After going to Costa Rica and Cuba, I decided it was time to get serious. My husband and I started in Spanish 1A last summer and we have learned so much. Our instructor Alex Gomez is a great teacher. Helpful, kind and so enjoys answering questions. We love the facility. There is always some type of cultural event going on in the evening, which gives students a chance to practice their Spanish. The school also offers travel opportunities to Spanish speaking counties. We are able to take Light Rail to class. Walk 2 blocks and there we are. So much easier to take Light Rail, than driving. In six months at Casa de Espanol, I've gone from knowing absolutely zero Spanish to being where whenever I see something written in both English and Spanish, I can cover the English with my hand and I can usually figure out the Spanish quite handily. Casa de Español offers small (7-9 people) classes where you will have LOTS of opportunities to practice speaking, reading, and writing Spanish "en contexto". The instructors are excellent, and the transition from in-person to on-line instruction (due to the pandemic) was virtually seamless! As you build on each class, you will find "familiar faces" of people who are learning along with you. There is definitely a camaraderie that develops, whether in-person or on-line. I can honestly say that my Spanish has advanced more in the time I've spent at Casa than it ever did in HS or university instruction. I can now easily read and write in Spanish and follow conversations. My fluency is still building every day, but getting there as I "think" more in Español. If you are serious about learning and becoming fluent in Spanish, this is the place. But it is not just about the language. It is about appreciating the culture and history of the incredibly diverse Hispanic world. Each class feels like a mini history or travelogue. Casa de Espanol offers Spanish language courses of various skill levels ranging from Basic to Expert. They also have weekly practice sessions where you have conversations with a person who uses Spanish as their primary language. They use a structured syllabus, online quizzes, and reading material. The class size seems to vary from 5-10 people. The instructors are kind and seem to enjoy teaching. It has been a great experience and I will be back. The only negative I found was the individuals performing the practice sessions are not teachers and are learning English as their second language. It is a good idea, but unfortunately some of them are not very good at including you as part of a group if you are the one struggling to understand what is being said. It is easy to feel abandoned from the group and unable to participate. I did not experience this with all practice sessions - Only some of them. read more

I don't have the words (in English or Spanish) to recommend Casa de Espanol and Maria enough. This series of courses has been an incredible experience. Here's why 1. Flexibility. This format isn't like university classes. If you miss a class you can go to another. If you struggle on a topic Maria takes extra time to make sure you really understand. There are only about 6 students in each class so you really are attended to during class and outside. She emails back quickly and can produce specialized materials if you need them. She did a whole lesson plan for me and an upcoming trip I'm doing. 2. Cost. This program is soo reasonable. For amount of one-on-one attention you get I'd imagine it would be really expensive. But it's not! It's cheaper than community college. 3. The students - Everyone wants to be there. The classes are very small and are mostly professionals or retirees. There is zero pressure and everyone is really nice. No matter your proficiency you are comfortable. Can't say enough good things. When I come back from my trip hopefully I'll be in her advance class. Then when I have little ones I can bring them to Casa so they can learn from the time they are little. :) read more

My two kids attend Casa de Espanol after school. They have been going for 4 weeks now, and already they are busting out words in Spanish randomly. Like, "Mom, can I have a glass of agua please?". I have been attending Casa de Espanol for a little over 2 years. I love this place! I am a retired RN and have had a lifelong dream of learning to speak and read the beautiful language of Spanish. I began with Basic 1 as I had very little previous Spanish instruction. I am now a student in Advanced 3! Because of the phenomenal teachers as Maria and LLamia, I am now able to speak, understand and read Spanish! Maria is very intelligent, kind, and patient with all of her students! Class sizes are very small, allowing for much individual attention. Maria also has an incredible sense of humor which makes going to class "muy interesante!" The classes are extremely small (around 8 people) so Maria and her teaching asst catch small mistakes in grammar etc. Doing the hw is really key (I never did), but that would have really made my experience much better. I helped run the language program at Montclair Elementry, where Maria, the director of this school, taught Spanish for many years. She was, by far, one of the best teachers we had. When the 1st grade teachers, who have been teaching for 20 years, had Maria teaching Spanish to the students in their classroom, every one of them would comment on her talent as a teacher, how wonderfully she engaged her students, and how masterfully she managed a classroom of 20 young children. Despite assuming I could never learn Spanish - lo and behold, I could! Maria is an excellent teacher who delivers the material in a way that is simple, palatable, and allows one to gain comfort quickly before moving on to more complicated concerns within the language, giving the student a sense of confidence to tackle things like grammar and irregular words. The school is growing with free evening opportunities to talk to native speakers and other students in our new-found tongue, the opportunity to be partnered with a native speaker to support one one-another in learning language and opportunities for group travel to spanish-speaking countries. The materials for class are affordable (10 years ago I paid $300 in college text books for one semester of German while in college, the course materials here run under $50). All in all, Casa de Espanol makes language learning easy, affordable and fun. I've been on hiatus for the summer but look forward to returning. read more
