Without a doubt, this was the best meal we had in Brighton. We tried to go to several places on the same block (a quaint alleyway), but the wait was unbearable. We walked by Don Carlos, and saw a sidewalk table available and immediately snagged it. Lucky for us too because there were two big birthday parties going on inside and more people came by to ask for seating. In case it's not clear, it's a tapas restaurant, so small sharing plates. I have a love/hate relationship with tapas. While I love trying multiple different things, the price always adds up to more than I want to spend. However, Casa Don Carlos was pretty reasonable in all regards. We started out with the house red (a blend from Alta Vega). It was alright, but our waiter recommended the Crianza from the same vineyard as our second bottle, which was way better. In terms of the food, we ordered: -chorizo "don Carlos" in rum flambe -rabbit cooked in white wine -patatas viejas con mojos (#8) -queso Manchego (#11) -garlic prawns (#16) -mushrooms in garlic (#5) -Spanish piquillo peppers stuffed with crab (#24) That was the perfect amount of food for 3 hungry people. The stuffed peppers were everyone's favorite. The portions were generous, and there was so much fresh crabmeat inside whole peppers. The chorizo in rum flambe was a sight to behold. The table next to us ordered it, and we just had to get it. And when ours arrived, passersby were equally as intrigued. The rabbit was also good, very meaty. The only thing that didn't hit with me was the Manchego (wasn't allowed to come to room temperature first), and the patatas viejas (which were just kinda there, but a good base for soaking up wine). Everything else was amazing. The service was wonderful, and at one point, our waiter noticed that my friend had spilled a bit of sauce on her shirt and he immediately brought her a rag with club soda and some other specialty formula that he said his wife uses all the time. Lovely people! If you're in Brighton and looking for a great meal, you can't go wrong with Don Carlos!

Dear lord, Carlos, how do you do it?!! Without a shadow of a doubt, Casa Don Carlos is my favourite restaurant in Brighton...hands down! I have never tasted more delicious or authentic tapas outside of Spain. In fact, I'm not sure I've tasted tapas this delicious in Spain! Honestly, I know I'm gushing, but the food is incredible. The decor is charming and authentic, Spanish through and through- from the red and white checked table cloths to the bread baskets and earthy ceramic-ware, you will truly feel as if you have slipped into another world. What's more, the owner and the waiting staff are predominantly Spanish and incredibly friendly. I recommend the meat balls or the stuffed peppers, as well as the mussels. The patatas bravas are good, but with so many interesting options on the menu, be brave- don't stick to safe old favourites! The specials board is certainly worth a look- there is often chorizo dishes as well as octopus! I would suggest ordering two tapas each and sharing. In the summer there is outside seating and what better place to enjoy a meal on a balmy summer's evening, than the cobbled streets of the South Lanes? I did just that with my flatmate this summer and as soon as the Sangria hit our lips we were overcome with 'that holiday feeling'. Be warned, this place is POPULAR, so you'll need to book at the weekends! I suggest you get yourself to Casa Don Carlos immediately! It's just divine...

This is a lovely, cosy little place serviing up some amazing tapas dishes. It feels like an authentic little Spanish cafe that you might find on the back streets of a Spanish town, with tightly packed tables and plenty of old fashioned charm. The food is served in generous portions ( I find tapas portions are often small for the amount you pay, but these are different), in those little terracotta bowls that seem to be a tapas staple, and the quality is excellent. The staff are friendly too, and this is a great place to go with a group of friends for a drunken evening of sociable eating and sangria - make sure you book, though, it's small and popular.

Casa Don Carlos is much loved by our family and friends alike. It gets very very busy so book ahead or expect to wait a little while but it is worth it. The tapas menu is varied and traditional and doesn't take long to come out. The honey glazed aubergine is a must and melts in the mouth. The classics (albondigas, gambas, potatas bravas) are all done well but head for the specials and Catalan favourites and you'll find the best eats. The staff are ever friendly, welcoming and attentive and you'll find you want to come back time and time again!

Awesome, great authentic Spanish food and atmosphere, the sangria's to die and the waiters are really friendly, If your in a party ask them to bring out the boron. ( Glass vessel with half a bottle of you favourite liqueur try to get it in your mouth and not down your shirt). If your not sure what to order, ask the staff who are really helpful and informative.

You see, the fantastically named King Alfonso the XIII of Spain once observed a waiter put a piece of palma ham over his wine glass to prevent a fly from landing in it. The king found the combination pleasant, and so his court members imitated him, and (apparently) the tapas + drink combo was born! To celebrate this, you get a small tapas and bread with every bottle of beer or glass of wine you buy here, meaning pub crawlers can quell your beer induced hunger while enjoying more alcohol... Well that's probably not the intention, but it certainly works well! Outside of the small bar and free tapas, Aguadulce is a well presented restaurant with up and downstairs seating, that seemed a little on the quite side when I was there... There aren't many Spanish restaurants around, so if you do fancy some traditional Spanish food then Aguadulce ought to hit the spot!

Everything's flavoured up with lovely chorizo, and there is excellent leg of pig on the bone, cut in mouthwatering paper-thin slices. They pick up local food and do it with their own style as well -- we found fried mackerel from which you could taste the sea. The flavour of the barnyard or sea was there, just round the corner. These are the best tapas I've found in Britain. At reasonable prices. With friendly service. And convenient. To those in Brighton.

The 'Thai Tapas' dishes are exactly what you would expect - the same concept as Spanish tapas, with small portions that you can combine to make a meal. There is a lot more to this place than that though - main dishes are also good. I went for the standard green curry, and it would certainly give any other Thai place in this city a run for its money. They also do a lunch deal for around a fiver for 2 courses. Service could have been faster when I visited, but that might just have been bad luck.

The quality of the food is excellent, but big prices for little meals means this Thai restaurant falls a little short. Mai Ped Ped Ped (meaning Quite Hot, Very Hot) certainly lives up to its name: the food is tangy, more often falling on the overly-spicy rather than the pleasantly-hot side of the palate. Unfortunately, this is a splinter in the side of their main concept. Lots of small plates that border on too-spicy-to-eat mean that the food can't be enjoyed quickly, nor that the multitude of flavours sit well on a burning tongue. However, it's not like the whole thing falls apart: if the tapas-angle is ignored, the conventional main menu certainly has a lot going for it. I particularly recommend the Drunken Duck (duck cooked in spirits): absolutely top nosh. Everything else I've tried is very tasty, but not particularly memorable: generally, spiciness is the all-pervading flavour. If that sounds overly negative, I certainly don't mean it to: if you're a fan a spicy Thai, Mai Ped Ped Ped certainly has a lot to offer, and could not be more centrally located. It doesn't jostle too heavily with any of the other Market Square/Lanes offerings, and is a great place to start an evening: spicy often leads to much beer consumption on my part! A quick final comment: make sure you get seated upstairs. The restructured town-house ambiance of Mai Ped Ped Ped, while suitably jovial, means that the downstairs area, next to the kitchen, often gets a little humid. Be warned! UPDATE: My fiancee wanted me to add that the Thai Green Curry is the best she's ever had, and well worth the price!
