At Casa Don Carlos, they know how to make you feel welcome. Any small eateries wondering why they can't keep their customers need to pay this place a visit: you can't help but be happy to be in their presence.
I rocked up in a group of 15 ladies on a hen party. Cringe. Admittedly we weren't wearing flashing willy-shaped deelyboppers, matching pink t-shirts and bum-skimming tutus, but we were sporting a variety of bizarre fancydress (Eurovision themed, with a country per hen; make of that what you will). So much as we would have liked to fade into the background (I jest. As if I have ever attempted to fade into the background), this was not possible. Yet despite a plethora of hen dos in Brighton, and restaurant owners no doubt sick to the back teeth with packs of drunken women constantly hurtling south for some seaside jollies, we weren't shunned, but embraced by the staff of Casa Don Carlos. Spain in particular was predictably well-received.
The restaurant is perfectly situated in the heart of the Lanes, so it's cramped, hard to find and wonderfully atmospheric. We'd opted for the set tapas menu which meant that dishes arrived in a constant stream; perfect for picky eaters or large groups which fail to make timely decisions. Despite my Spanish boss's constant assurances that we should all eat like the Europeans, let's not lie to ourselves: this food ain't healthy. Yeah, but it's delicious. An awful lot of meat, plenty of seafood, and a chunk of carbs to finish it off. No veggies of note, unless you count the tomato sauce and the odd pea nestling in the paella. But hey, we weren't there for the plant-life. The Spanish omelette was wonderful, and I picked the wrong moment to go to the loo because that was when they brought out the flaming sausages. Photographic evidence proves that my friends weren't exaggerating the height of the flames!
We were stuffed to the gills by the time we left, and I don't even want to know how many bottles of wine we'd quaffed between us. Yet the price-per-head, including service, was less than £30. Absolute raving bargain!
A note: if you are a large group, they'll accommodate you, but don't expect to turn up on the day and get seated. We'd booked far in advance which was entirely necessary since we took up almost half the restaurant. Despite its diminutive size, the place is irrepressibly lively, with friendly waiters and loud Spanish music so it's a bundle of fun. Good things really do come in small packages. read more
