not much to look at but great food!!

I pass by this place so often it should be my home, but unfortunately I have entered just a very few times. Each time it's been great service and mood. Easy to find on calle Mina but in summer, this tiny little walking street is packed with filled chairs and the sweet smell of fried fish and garlic!! Recently walked in and had some tapas with some visiting american friends. I saw that they had tortas de camarones and since I like that, I ordered a few for myself and my friends who don't speak spanish. It was done fast and served piping hot. The first thing I noticed was that they were smaller than the normal size I've had in other places. That thought was quickly forgotten after I bit into it. It was so delicious! I have have this in many places, and in Cadiz, Vejer, Jerez and throughout Rota. I have tasted them prepared home-style cooked at friend's homes, but this was the BEST I have ever tasted!! Most I have eaten previously were larger but flatter, which - when fried - makes it more crispier but also with less flavor. This was smaller but thicker, and the taste is unlike I've ever tasted, plus I noticed they didn't use the tiny shrimp/camarones complete with antenna, head and shell (they are so small you don't even taste it) but real shrimp but just a bit bigger. All of their food I have tasted on one occasion or another, and I have been happy but these tortas de camarones will keep me coming back! They make their own and not purchased elsewhere which most places do - thank goodness for that! Outside seating available. No place to park within half a mile. VERY busy in summer. Remember that spanish lunch & dinner hours are different: lunch: about 2 till 4 dinner: about 8-ish till I have no idea. IF you arrive right at 8pm, expect to wait as the kitchen gets prepared. This is worth waiting for!!!

    Shark so good.

This little tapas spot is probably one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in Rota! During my brief 4…read moreday stay in Rota, I've eaten here 3x..loll Their prices are very affordable and the quality of the food is consistently good! The menus have both Spanish and English and the wait staff speak decent English as well. Throughout my 3 visits, my buddies and I ordered plates of Spanish Iberico ham, Iberico ham on scrambled eggs and potatoes, stuffed rigatoni, cuttlefish croquettes, slow cooked pork bao buns (which are amazing!), grilled octopus over chopped potatoes, as well as, a few other dishes. The 2 dishes that really stood out to me were the Iberico ham over scrambled eggs and potatoes and the slow cooked pork bao buns (on the menu, also called Speedy Gonzales). The salty flavor and the texture of the Iberico ham, coupled with the flavors from the scrambled eggs and potato really work, and together, is a perfect bite! Meanwhile, the bao buns were definitely a surprise in a Spanish tapas restaurant..lol Nonetheless, these were cooked with care and were delicious! The tender pork was perfectly paired with guacamole and what tasted like a sriracha cream sauce. Utopia was definitely a great find in Rota, and for anyone who visits this quaint little city in Southern Spain, I highly recommend this restaurant for it's delicious food! :D

Venue: Come for the food, stay for the ocean view and sunset. This place is in a great spot next to the beach and easy to find. You will need to park your car somewhere in town, we parked a few blocks away near the Embarcadero parking lot. The restaurant is also very clean and if you arrive right at 8pm, you don't really need a reservation. Staff: Great service, especially for our for customers that don't know how to speak Spanish. They are fluent in English and very helpful in ordering local favorites and fresh fish. Food: We loved every item we ordered and it was nice to be able to share the dishes so we can all experience each other's plates. The grilled octopus was tasty and not too smoky or salty. The croquettes weee surprisingly tasty and not fishy at all. Definitely come here if you want to have dinner with a group or want to relax and enjoy a fun meal. We came here during the week and did not need reservations, but it can get busy on weekends, so make reservations if you can.
