My wife is Filipino- I am a southern man from Kentucky. We go to Casa Manila at Least, once a week (take out). The food here is not just good, it doesn't just cover the Basic Filipino flavors and products, the food here is cooked with real care and skill. The inasal bbq chicken could compete in any southern bbq cookoff - and stand a good chance for a medal. The palaboc noodles could be served in Michelin restaurant. This place could convert any good old boy to Filipino food fan- even the 'scary' Dinuguan would please the American pallet. Try the curry chicken!! Great authentic Filipino food! It's not a fancy place, you go up to pick up your food , generous portions , and so many choices especially when you go on weekends! Love the lumpia - better than most Filipino places and their bihon is also really good -- comes with lots of veggies and meat and not just all noodles! Have been a patron here for more than a decade and frankly do enjoy much of the food here. It's a cozy no-frills hole-in-the-wall type spot where you typically get pretty authentic Filipino dishes. What has changed lately is that it's hardly a value-for-money spot anymore. Prices have increased and, more disappointingly, portions have shrunk noticeably, to the point whereby it's actually cheaper to go get a meal in a regular sit-down service restaurant. This is a spot where you self-serve and order from a steam table dishes to be added over rice in a styrofoam box to carried on a tray and eaten with plastic cutlery. It used to be better but after the last few visits it feels like it needs to reposition itself to a better value point. read more

First of all, the foods here are okay. I guess this is the only positive review I can give. I also went here before asking for their tray menu, they don't have any printouts, got my number says the lady/cashier will send the menu via text, but as expected I didn't receive anything. Now, we go to the physical appearance of the store/restaurant. It's nasty, old, and dirty, everywhere. Not really the expected look of a food business. Next, they will give you a tiny serving for the combo meal. Small coffee cup is not even filled halfway. I remember buying lechon kawali here and mind you, they will give you most of the fat part and counting how many pieces, unlike in Kabayan wherein they will put as much as the container can fill. I ordered a combo and a balut so I can use a credit card cause of the minimum $10. There is absolutely no decent Filipino food in New Jersey and this place is the worst. Combo was ampalaya and pork adobo. Ampalaya was ok, it lacks taste. The pork adobo had that it's been in the refrigerator a few times texture. The meat had refrigerator burns for goodness sake. OH THE BALUT!!! Cracked it, and it was freaking rotten!!! The smell was so bad. Whoever is refrigerating the food at night should check the temperature of that fridge, especially since you will be serving those same dishes the next day and maybe few more days after I told them, and they gave me a cash refund for the balut. BUT, get this, they refunded less than what I paid for it. Ridiculous!!! Also, do you want to make an impression to your customers? Stop using disposable plates and kiddie forks and spoons. Casa Manila is a no frills kind of place, but the food is delicious. The bbq pork skewers are perfectly savory with nice juicy and crisp edges. The pancit in the palabok is thicker then I am used to, but no less tasty. And the bilo bilo was creamy and sweet. Highly recommend! read more

I came here 2 days ago after I dropped off a friend at EWR airport. I did not want to get stuck i the traffic so I decided to look for a filipino restaurant nearby when I found this place. I thought, Casa Manila seemed good base on the name. It was about 15 minutes drive from the airport and it was pretty easy to find parking on the street around lunch time. I had a combo meal: 2 main dishes with 1 side and a drink. It was about $8 and change including taxes which I thought was really cheap. Anyway, I ordered a pork steak and fried milkfish with steamed rice and a soda. At first I was excited to try it, as I always get excited eating filipino food. However, my bad experience started even before I got my food. There was only 2 customer at that time, me being the other one. There was 1 staff behind the food counter. The person before me was taking his time to choose from 20+different dishes. So meanwhile I tried to asked the staff, but she did not even recognized me, like she did not hear or see me. It was not until another staff from the kitchen came out and asked me if I am ready to order after 10 minutes of standing in an awkward silence. I just let it go and ordered my food. When I got my food, I found out that they only take card with a minimum $10 purchase. So I ordered another combo meal to-go. I paid, sat down and ate my meal. As soon as I took my first bite, I was disappointed. The pork was too sour/acidic. It seems like they used too much vinegar. The fish was cold and not crispy as it should be traditionally serve. Anyway, I tried to eat what I can as I do not like wasting food. I took the leftover to-go, hoping I can do something about it at home. It was beyond my capabilities to give their food a new life. Even the second meal I had was not appetizing at all. They put too much of whole black peppers and bay leaf in beef stew to a point that you have whole peppers in every bite. First, I am not a Filipino. I come here to enjoy home made, good quality, reasonably priced food. This place is both a restaurant and also sell groceries, Asian, Filipino, and others. I come here to enjoy the everyday deal $6 something for two (wide selection) of main courses with rice or noodles and a can of drink or water. The portions are generous and the tastes are unique and authentic. I love the coconut milk shrimp and the all the different delicious pork selections as well as the other meat types. Close by 7:00 I believe is the only disadvantage. I also like the very friendly staff. read more

We don't get anything in particular...but I must say they make good lumpia and kare kare is pretty good too. I guess price is reasonable and they have a little market too so you can get yanyans and cream silk lol. This place definitely put Filipino foods to try back onto my list. Given the first disaster of Filipino food I had was fried pig intestines, this definitely made me see that it's not only weird organ meats that they serve. Lunch is pretty decently priced - it was 7.50 for the 2 sides and noodles. They gave me a shit ton noodles, but they were dry and had no flavor. I reallyyyyy wished I had hot sauce. I had the steak and the fried chicken. The steak was pretty good, but the fried chicken was way below par. The workers are super friendly and tried to have everyone served, but along the way, everyone's orders got mixed up and everyone had the wrong sides. I ended up switching the lumpia with steak. I wish they mixed up my fried chicken instead haha. But the portions are definitely generous. Don't know about coming back here for Filipino, but thanks for putting Filipino food back on the map! This review is about the INCREDIBLY poor service we received. I called Casa Manila and they agreed to make a special order of chicken lumpiang shanghai for my party a few weeks later. I saw all the negative reviews but unfortunately had no choice but to go with them because no other restaurant would agree to make chicken lumpiang shanghai. After confirming my order several times, on the day of my party my brother goes to pick it up only to be told that they gave my order away. I call absolute BS. No way some random person is going to walk in and ask for chicken lumpiang shanghai (something that's not common at all) and mention my name. They offered to look at their camera but after a while told my brother they were too 'busy'. What I believe happened is they realized they couldn't do it and instead of being honest, they opted to lie, which left me with no food for my party. Stay away from this terrible establishment. While I can't speak to how terrible their food is (according to the other reviewers) because they just never gave me my order, I can speak to how terrible their customer service is. With this mentality, I don't understand how their business continues to function. read more

As someone who grew up eating Filipino food every day of his life, it's hard to give an impartial review without stating how much better mommy and daddy's cooking is. Of course, I'm not comparing Casa Manila's food to my parent's cooking or that of my own. Casa Manila, unfortunately, is like the corner Chinese take-out you could find in every neighborhood -- the food is good for a craving but it's not a place that you would brag about. What I do like about this place is the fact that it is a typical Filipino eatery, not some fancy shmancy restaurant where all the "maarte," "mayabang," and "pasosyal" congregate. Location: Parking is a PITA. I'm not sure if this is how it works in New Jersey, but seriously, a handful of parking spaces behind the restaurant is insufficient. Side street parking? Limited and shared with nearby establishments. Price: A little over $7 for a two item plate of steamed rice, chicken adobo, and bistek (beef steak) is reasonable. However, when you serve two large scoops of rice with a small bowl of adobo and bistek, either adjust the prices or adjust the portions. Taste: I absolutely hate the "cheap" brand of rice that is used here. It isn't meant for Asian food. The adobo was decent but nothing special; I do like how potatoes and eggs are not added. As for the bistek...well, the bistek was good. Now, Filipino cuisine in general is oily and fatty. That's just how it is -- that's why it's so damn good. However, when you can clearly see deep pockets of oil in dishes, that is never appealing...or good for your blood pressure. There's a mini Filipino store connected to the restaurant, which sells snacks, some pastries along with other common baked goods, and miscellaneous items. When I ate at Casa Manila in Union maybe about two years ago (2009), the food was pretty much decent and satisfying to my taste. Thinking I would definitely come back to this place. They have the usual turo-turo and a lot of food to choose from. Last week 04Nov'11, I pass by to eat and to my surprised it looks different. The place was a mess. Food looks different and the place look unsanitary, like a public school canteen in manila (no disrespect, but you know what I'm talking about.) The employees all looked stress-out and old, not smiling. My parents and I all ordered combo meals, the Inihaw Pork Liempo was hard and cold. The ginisang sayote with shrimp was malangsa and needs more salt, the rice they use looks like NFA rice (Cheapest rice in the Philippines). Food was not right at all. The cooks at the kitchen looks like mexicans and not filipinos. I only took 2-3 bites and throw out my food. What a disgrace. This place might be under new management or something. Not recommended. This Review Dated: January 13, 2021. Average tasting food for a filipino restaurant. I am divorced and too lazy to cook so I order takeout in large quantities that lasts me 2-3 wks. Two days ago I ordered 2 large adobo (2 quarts), 3 large paksiw na lechon, and one stick of BQ. Like usual I charged it on the credit card and assumed the price I paid was correct. When I got home I looked at the receipt again. I was charged $96.00 dollars! When the guy at the register was ringing me up it looked to me that he charged me $15.00 a piece for the lechon and $17.00 a piece for the adobo. Added up to $79.00 plus $2.75 for the BBQ plus $3.25 for using a credit card. It should be around $85 dollars. Again with the covid, I know take out has become very expensive. I called to speak to someone about the discrepancy and the person I spoke to said the receipt was correct. Each quart of paksiw na lechon was $18.75 !!!!!! Are you kidding me? I would have been a regular customer at this restaurant but not with those prices. Not for average filipino food! On top of it all the server who was putting the food in the container was not filling it to the top, and I had to keep asking with each container to give me more meat and not the gravy! High prices for average food, and not enough of it that I had to keep begging to fill the container to the top. One thing for sure is that they lost what could have been a very good customer who would have paid the money if the food was worth the expense. read more

I came here yesterday after my son's competition around the area. All the food we ordered is cold- i only ask to warm the bbq for my son, but the old lady inside the counter give me a nasty look . My son loves Kare2 and sisig. He's so disappointed because kare kare is too greasy and too much peanut butter and sugar?( so sweet too), the sisig after he taste a little bit, he never touch it again. I said let me take it home and tasted the next day- that sisg taste funny and texture is yacky. btw the price of kare kare is so expensive bcoz they said not part of the combo, its $19- lady told me, "Yes a bit pricey but our quality is good", well the price and taste of the food really not good at all. Then we sit and eat and as i look around. The place is not clean at all. The ceiling on the other side is hanging, table is sticky and the bottom line so unsanitary. I've been to a lot of small filipino place but not like this. Too embarrassed to recommend this place. First and last on that place! Not coming back!
