Pomegranate margarita with Burrito Abodabo

Authentic Mexican food on the plains of Iowa. Gringo twists too. Great Food, good margaritas. Perfect for a college small town.

Veggie Quesadilla

I think I'm going to have to drop a star, unfortunately. The past couple dining experiences at La Casa Margaritas has emphasized the spotty level of service. The most recent time, we stood for about five minutes before being seated. When we were seated, it took about 15 minutes for the waiter to come over to ask us what we wanted to eat. In the interim, a 10 year old boy that was dining with his family came over to our table and got us our drinks and chips + salsa. It was an extremely weird experience. After eating, we had to grab our own boxes and we never received our check, so we had to go up to the counter and tell the cashier which table we were sitting at so she could pull up our bill. This boxing and paying experience has happened a couple times so far. Basically, the food is still pretty good but on the expensive side. I'd still recommend going, but the service has proven to be extremely hit-or miss, mostly leaning towards the missing tendency. It is unfortunate because La Casa Margaritas has great food, but interacting with the staff can be troublesome.

Chile Riano and burrito combo.

Service was slow. Chips were good but bring your own salsa. House salsa is awful. Very mediocre if you think toco bell is good Mexican food this place is for you.

Tradional Mexican dishes. But the ingredients are very good quality and very fresh. Service was excellent. Close to highway 80.

The food is decent. The prices are decent. The whole thing is 'okay.' It is definitely never my first choice for dining out in Grinnell.

The location is pretty cool - outside is very pretty to walk by and see and inside, and outside really, you see the trains go by directly next to it! That in itself already gave a cool ambiance. They played great music upon walking - Spanish station perhaps, but we loved it and as soon as we walked in were greeted with big smiles. It's a pretty big restaurant with a lot of room! An extensive menu also, we ended up with enchiladas, cheese crisp, and a chicken dish. They brought out some chips and salsa ahead of our meal, for the table, and that was lovely. Chips were warm but didn't seem super fresh although were still great. The salsa was quite mild but wouldn't expect different in the heartland. The service was wonderful and our server was attentive. As for the flavor of enchiladas - very good. Cheesy and delicious. The chicken was good, but being so close to Mexico coming from southern AZ we have pretty authentic close to native flavors. The seasoning was ok and the rice and beans that it came with were also alright. We were largely impressed with the service and structure more than anything. I was really happy with the michelada - such a staple for my meals when having Mexican so it was perfect!! We enjoyed overall and recommend. We may have to try others to have a better fair ranking of Mexican in Grinnell. But it's worth a try!

Now, I love a good breakfast and brunch place, especially when it isn't a crowded chain place. This place fits that bill. It is a local place with two locations. The menu is brilliantly "evil" making it extremely difficult to choose just one dish to try. They all look amazing and delicious, so of course, you will need to visit more than once to enjoy all that they have to offer. During my visit, I tried their cinnamon roll pancakes with eggs and bacon. Oh boy are they incredible! The pancakes just melt in your mouth, full of flavor. The eggs were a classic standard of scrambled eggs and the bacon I ordered crispy as I like a good crunch. My companion ordered the Hobo Scramble and just loved it. She made sure to take some home to enjoy for a second time. All in all, I enjoyed my experience and look forward to my next visit and delicious meal.

Menu is expansive and everything looked good. I chose the mile high omelet and a smoreo pancake as an upgrade. Omelet was ok...pancake was good, very rich. May try the Ankeny location in the future, but not something I left thinking "that was so good"

Let's focus on this visit. I called ahead and made reservations. My wife and I arrived about 5 minutes before our reservation time. The ladies at the desk always seem to make it an awkward experience for some reason. They are nice enough, but they don't really act like they know what they're doing. There was a lot of whispering among themselves, and we were asked to wait while they checked with our server, and then asked to wait again while they seated people who arrived after us, even though that group was missing a couple of people. The lighting in the dining room is always a bit dark. Maybe they do that so the grills stand out when they're lit. They have small lamps on the tables. Our server was excellent. She ushered us to the cooler to pick out our steaks. She identified the largest ones on display as the ones to get, and even asked the cooler staff to put out more steaks so there were bigger ones to choose from. I got a New York strip and my wife ordered a small ribeye. We also ordered a mushroom skillet, which was extra. This is a grill-your-own-steak place, so you are the chef. There are a few seasonings available at the grill to add to your steak like garlic salt, seasoning salt, and table salt. They also have a bucket of melted margarine if you want to baste your steak with it, or put it on the Texas-sized bread while you toast it. I asked if they had butter. Our server brought us whipped butter and sour cream for the baked potatoes that are included with the meal. She melted a few of the butter packets for us to use on our steaks. Unfortunately, whipped butter just doesn't have the same flavor as regular butter. While I appreciated the effort, the end result wasn't what I'd hoped for. In addition to all the baked potatoes you care to eat, there are also baked beans and salad included with every meal. The salad was basically a section of a head of lettuce with dressing and toppings in it. While the presentation was nice, I prefer when they actually had the salad bar that they advertise. The salads used to come with carrot and celery sticks, and I used to be able to get cottage cheese from the salad bar for my baked potato. Now you can request another salad be brought out if you want another one. Let me add that the cups for the self-serve baked beans could be twice as big and still be considered small. There are also fried potatoes on the grill, and you can eat your fill of them. I assume they're cooked with the margarine they have available on the grill. While the food was good and service was excellent, I left thinking that for just the two of us, we could have made a feast for ourselves at home for less than half the price after the tip was included.
