This is actually the second time we've eaten at Landmark Grill & Grind... The first time was good, but this time was exceptional. We rolled in as Easter brunch was wrapping up on Easter Sunday. Traveling on Easter Sunday is never fun when you are trying to find something to eat outside of fast food or reservation only Easter brunches. We could tell that staff was frazzled from out of the gate after wrapping up their own hectic brunch service. Our party of four arrived just as another party of four arrived for regular menu service. We were seated after a short wait. Tina introduced herself and took our drink orders right away. In conversation she mentioned they had been open from 700 AM - 100 PM for brunch. The first three hours had been spent with only two members of staff seating and serving. Our party ordered one catfish special, two shrimp dinners, and one chicken strip plate and accompanying sides and foutain drinks. Tina did an excellent job. Updating us on our food order, refilling drinks, and she was taking care of several tables besides ours... The food was great! I'd highly recommend the catfish dinner! Two large fillets and cooked perfectly. Extra crispy fresh out of the fryer tater tots! We wrapped up our meal and headed back out on the road. Conveniently located at the gas station and next to the outlet mall just off I 80 this little diner is a great stop to take a break and get a nice meal. EV chargers are also available which is an added bonus while you eat. We were pleasantly greeted and quickly seated by our server, who is bartender, hostess, and overall man of the hour, taking care of most of the restaurant while we were there. The menu is standard Iowa fare that includes basic, roast, beef/gravy and potato or turkey /gravy and potato meal, as well as your standard tenderloin sandwich. Also burgers, salads, and plenty of pies on display in the case! Prices were reasonable, and our server could not have been more attentive or pleasant while he pretty much ran the entire restaurant on his own. Food was good, but we were severed chicken fried steak instead of fried pork tenderloin. We mentioned it to the waitress and she said it did look like chicken fried steak and walked away. No apology, no offer to right the situation. We just hope it was chicken fried steak because if it wasn't, we just ate a few bites of raw pork. read more

I stopped at this little gas station adjacent diner for a quick lunch. I didn't have high expectations when I came through the door and found them to be in the midst of renovations but they had some booths on the side, I was hungry and the staff was friendly. The place has a Mom and Pop feeling and it feels like a family operation. My server (Christian?) was very nice. The menu had a surprising variety. I asked if they had a Club sandwich and got a cheerful, "We can do that.". I opted for the house made slaw - which was really good. The sandwich was, likewise, very good and I wish I had the time to try a piece of cake or pie. I started this as a 4 star review because of the initial impression of the truck stop diner under construction but I realized the food was a 4.7, service and value were 5.0. We stopped at the Grill and Grind while in town for tournaments. The food was wonderful and the service was speedy. We were worried since we didn't have much time in between games but after arriving we got served in less than 10 to 15 minutes. The waitress was very kind, the place very clean and food all homemade. Color me surprised that a little restaurant next to a gas station could be so yummy. While driving between Iowa City and Des Moines today we stopped for lunch and I was very pleased. It was nothing fancy, but I really liked the combination of the dressing and hot sauce. The cheese was thoroughly melted and the chicken was tender. I also had one of my son's pancakes and his bacon. The pancake was light, fluffy, and had a nice buttermilk flavor. The bacon was crispy without being burnt. We had the chocolate oreo pie for dessert. This was simple and light, which I liked. Hey, it's a restaurant attached to a gas station. So, don't get to excited. You get a great selection with semi-tasty food (truck-stop pun (i.e. semi))....Anyway... The waitress, Rita, greeted my family and me with a smile and said she had been there "longer than dirt-- 37 years." We loved her immediately. People make a restaurant and Rita made is right at home. The food was decent for being connected to a gas station. Sometimes truckstop offramps produce some fairly tasty earring establishments. My wife and I were near the end of a 3 day drive home and wanted to get some supper before hand so we wouldn't have to cook when we got to the house. She loves a hot beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy and when she saw on her phone that the Landmark has it on their menu we decided to give it a try. As soon as we walked in the door we felt right at home. Joe, who seems to do a little of everything there, got us seated. I asked him about their beer selection and he had me come to the bar so he could show me their different tap and bottle choices. We talked beer for a while and I actually ended up ordering a hard cider called Berry Poppins. In the midwest a standard entree is the classic pork tenderloin sandwich. Of course the Landmark has it, but they also offer one with a twist; the Maui Wowie. A pork tenderloin topped with melted swiss cheese and a Hawaiian style pineapple salsa. Delicious. And to say it is BIG doesn't do it justice. Now, for the reason we stopped at the Landmark. The hot beef. My wife is very picky about hot beef sandwiches. Gotta be TENDER. Gotta have good mashed potatoes with tasty gravy. Check, check and check. All three boxes checked. She loved it. Add to that a wonderful house salad. She was a happy camper. My boyfriend got the half hot turkey sandwich which was a good, filling portion without being too much to eat. I got the tenderloin sandwich. We were immediately impressed with the sandwich as it was very thick with a lot of meat, and the breading appeared to be hand-done & was thin and not too thick and greasy.
