So this was a less than average breakfast experience. We had to be on a waitlist with about of a third of the tables being empty. I get that if you're short staffed, but having to then give out a phone number to be texted seemed like overkill. And they made the 80 year old after us do the same thing, I got the byo omelet. It was tough and over cooked. I like mine on the slightly browned country style more than a runny French style, but it was bordering burnt. My partner had even worse experience with the farmers omelet cause of the gravy tasting just bad with a glue like texture. The breakfast potatoes had a great seasoning, but were both wet and burnt. When we arrived at 8:30 in the morning, there was an hour to an hour and 20 minute wait so we put our name on the list and ran a few errands while waiting. it wasn't even an hour later and they told me my table is ready. We went in there and got seated right away. I got the chicken and waffles deluxe with the combo. The chicken and waffles is really good a lot to eat and the combo had a huge sausage patty. That was really good. My wife got the Frenchy and I almost like that as much as the chicken and waffles - I ate half of it one of my daughters got the waffle and really liked it. My other daughter got the omelette and at all so she must've like it too. I definitely saw why this place was so busy! Might be the best place in Ames to get breakfast. The wait time can get pretty long and a couple times I have put my name in and run an errand or two depending on the wait time they give because there isn't room to wait inside. This place is just wonderful. It has a calm and cozy atmosphere and vibe when you walk in. The staff are warm and welcoming, ready to help. Now, I love a good breakfast and brunch place, especially when it isn't a crowded chain place. This place fits that bill. It is a local place with two locations. The menu is brilliantly "evil" making it extremely difficult to choose just one dish to try. They all look amazing and delicious, so of course, you will need to visit more than once to enjoy all that they have to offer. During my visit, I tried their cinnamon roll pancakes with eggs and bacon. Oh boy are they incredible! The pancakes just melt in your mouth, full of flavor. Early morning visit to Ames. We decided we were hungry. This was close and we had not tried it yet. It wasn't even 9 am yet. The parking lot was pretty full. This building is surrounded by motels and lots of parking. We walked in and were greeted with smiles. We were sat immediately. One of our table had to use the bathroom before we sat down. The door needed a little special handling to make it shut properly. Back at our booth we got menus. We weren't really thinking about going to a chain. We know there is another in Altoona, but not sure of any others. The restaurant has a casual, cozy atmosphere and serves breakfast and lunch. There are some traditional dishes on the menu and then there are some delicious looking options on the menu. I really was looking at some really rich options but I was really liking the idea of egg Benedict. Some popular dishes include chicken and waffles, cinnamon roll French toast, and Cluck Cluck Skillet. The blueberry lemon looked good too. Couple people at my table mentioned the King of the Hill. I decided on HIPPIE BENNY: Hickory smoked bacon, avocado, sauteed onions, field greens on English muffin topped with poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and everything bagel seasoning. I have never had field greens on breakfast meal. It was definitely different. I really enjoyed the flavor of the sauteed onions. My eggs came with a side of fruit. It was a really good cut of fresh strawberries. Everyone else got really good looking food. Both the men at the table got a side of biscuit and gravy. They did share they were a little bummed that there was no meat in the gravy. The waitress checked on us as we enjoyed our meals. It was all really filling. We just finished the best breakfast we have had in our 10 days on the road. The servings were large and the food was really good. My husband had the king of the hill and it was tasty . I had a southwest skillet and it was also very good-the potatoes, chorizo , tomatoes, onions and peppers were just the right combination. This place is fantastic. We have been here several times since our kid started attending IA State University. It can get very very crowded and it seems like the wait will be hella long but it always seems to work out amazing. They say 20-30 mins and it ends up being 15. Not that they estimate it wrong they are just that good of moving people through and to a table. Which is always clean and with all the things you want to start diving into. Coffee, sweetener, utensils and coffee! Did I say coffee? The coffee is great, I'm a snob. It's always fresh and they top it off politely so it's not all messed up. Haha. I love their Nova Benny! It is so dang good I crave it and wish it were in the city where I live but it's not. My kiddos love the biscuits and gravy, egg breakfasts and so does the hubby who is always very critical to having to wait and we calm him down and say, just wait... it's worth it and so far... we haven't been wrong. The Flip'N Jacks building was originally the home of the Happy Chef restaurant, of which there are a few similarities. In between was El Azteca, which recently moved to a brand new (and nearby space). The new owners have done a nice job with the warm and inviting interior. Dad and I have ongoing Ames restaurant conversations. I'm fixated on the Mucky Duck (south of town), while he tries to find a place he hasn't been before. So even though it was lunch time, we headed over to Flip'N Jacks for the breakfast menu. And yes there are mid-day and evening selections. Dad likes pancakes/eggs/sausage and I went for the corn beef hash. We were both pleased with our generous selections, although I had first thought that the hash was a little overdone and I should have ordered fruit rather than have the redundant standard side of potatoes served. Service was friendly, but perhaps with a little lost in translation (e.g. - fruit vs. potatoes). I also thought that the time from the kitchen was a little slow, but I need to remind myself more that some places are short of help. Anyway, Flip'N Jacks has been added to Dad's Ames culinary list, so at some point, we'll be back. Dad and I also noticed at least 9 hotels in the immediate area of this restaurant. This should bode well for Flip'N Jacks as hotel guests do not live on "free hot breakfasts" alone. read more

My partner had an omelet with sausage gravy on it that he said was true comfort food and would also be well suited for a hangover meal.
