I don't know how many times I have driven by the front door at Casa Oaxaca, but I decided to actually go inside today, and not just from curiosity but from memories of my visit to the city itself decades earlier. At the window you can tell there's a lot of love and respect for the city of oaxaca. Most people don't know, but this city is revered not only for its fine cuisine and introducing several types of mole to the culinary world but also its artisans in the area and the celebration of the day of the dead. And that's after you've seen the pyramids and temples that are still there from ancient civilizations. As I enter I hear Latin strings and music being sung in the background that filled the shop and gave me the feeling that I was stepping through a threshold into another world. Looking around me I see all the famous wood carvings that they're famous for that are extremely colorful and playful. Ornaments and tapestries clothing beautiful black jars for black jars. The place has thousands of items in it I'm sure. I don't know how he found room for everything in such a small space. Carlos introduced himself to me. A very warm and generous person with much information and never gets tired of questions. It was fun for me to go back through my recollections of the city And tell him why I missed it so much and will return soon. Hes from there and he nodded knowingly that I had actually found what people from there already know. If you haven't been there it should be a destination in your life. I must say I wasn't prepared to buy anything on that trip but was more of a just drop in and see but I did walk out with a couple items and I have no shame. They were fun and there's a birthday coming up and I got a couple things to give away. It was fun being in there.. I'm going to return with my wife and she'll say why I look at it with love with long thoughtful eyes. This is a great little shop on salano Avenue and I believe that it's worth a walk in if nothing else but to Marvel at all the little items that you might miss normally. Great place to buy Mexican folk, traditional and festive gifts. Casa Oaxaca is well stocked with imported and local artist goods, I recently did a mural on the building of a agave with the store logo/signage and added bright colors. I've been shopping at Casa Oaxaca for over two decades and have used most of the folk art purchased for day of the dead altars and other teaching workshops and events. I moved to Albany about 3 years ago and since then I've shopped here a couple of times. Once I purchased a painted Virgin de Guadalupe little mirrored box shaped shelf for my mother's birthday. She absolutely loved it! The last time I was here I purchased two hand made painted wooden chairs that are now used in my kitchen. They are sturdy and beautifully painted and oh so colorful! A long time ago before I had a decent job, I bought a trinket for my aunts birthday during the Solano stroll. I lost it and came back and without any prompt, the owner gave me the little metal magnet for free. It wasn't a lot of money, but meant a lot to myself. My kid was looking for a little knit pouch that he could wear around his neck that would hold his Tamagotchi (sp). We had started our quest to find one at the Oakland Farmers Market. We found one there but they wanted 20 bucks for it! So i told him to wait... after stopping at 2 or 3 other places without any luck. We were coming down Solano Ave when I spotted this little place brimming with Mexican art and pottery. We went in just to see. Sure enough we found exactly what we were looking for and it was only $6! They have clothes, fountains, plates, jewelery, purses and all kinds of odds and ends ... like little statuettes and coin bags. The store seems to have great products but the service is terrible. We may have just caught the wrong staff person, but she was downright hostile. She accused me multiple times of trying to take pictures of the dresses. I wasn't. My future mother in law tried explaining to her that I was just looking on my phone to show the style of dress I want but she again accused me of doing that. I really wanted to buy a dress for my engagement shoot, but I ended up just leaving due to her hostility. I didn't want to deal with that woman's rudeness. I will find my dress elsewhere. You know, I was really excited to come down here and purchase a bunch of folk art or art to decorate my room with. The prices weren't the problem really. Whenever I enter a small business like this I expect a friendly greeting or like I've said once before a smile is priceless. They actually had a bunch of neat things. I've seen these in Mexico before and they sell them for way too much over here. I do appreciate Mexican art since I grew up seeing it done. I was in the Bay Area one weekend and needed to bring a gift to a dinner party that evening. I had read the great reviews on Yelp and decided to check this place out. When I arrived the owner was preparing to close, but he was very kind and said it was okay if I came in and took a look around. I was impressed with the variety of products: colorful tapestries, elegant jewelry, children's toys, pottery, gorgeous embroidered clothing to name a few. The owner is extremely knowledgeable about the items as he is from Oaxaca himself. This was very helpful, and honestly it was a big reason why I decided to buy more than one item. I appreciate it when someone really knows about the products in their store and clearly cares a great deal about their business. I intended to buy only a planter, but I left with a pair of beautiful silver earrings with coral beads, a colorful hand-painted ceramic platter, and a wooden hand-carved and beautifully hand-painted "alebrije" of a coyote. This place is not dirt cheap, but that is because the items aren't cheap and they certainly are NOT cheaply made. I am more than willing to pay for quality. The prices are also not outrageous considering that the owner probably has a lot of overhead since he told me he goes on the buying trips himself to Mexico and picks out all the items and then has to probably pay to have everything shipped back. I also am happy to pay for items that are supporting the artisans in Mexico. You can definitely find something to fit your budget. There are some bigger ticket items, but there were also smaller priced gifts including smaller pottery items, coin purses, small wall hangings, and simple bracelets; all very beautiful. I will definitely keep this place in mind for future gifts for friends and family (or myself!). I am a HUGE believer in the importance of customer service and this place definitely exceeded my expectations, which made all the difference. Best of luck to this business. read more

I didn't buy anything, cause i was broke when i went in. But i'll definitely be back. Lots of hand made stuff by artists in mexico. I discovered Casa Oaxaca over the holidays while gift-shopping and was immediately charmed. A family operation, the store was offering delicious empanadas and mole gratis from a little stand outside of the store, cooked by the 93-year old mother and the sister while the brothers inside the store sold gorgeous Mexican folk art and crafts. Bright, cheerful, and colorful, the store is full of unique gifts like Talavera pottery, tin mirrors, alebrijes, gorgeous and well-made leather bags and purses, black Oaxacan pottery, terra cotta catrinas and trees of life, jewelry, carpets, and religious art. It's incredible how much the store offers. I was transported by the food, the hospitality, and the good cheer of this place. read more

I was looking for a unique leather messenger bag, so I decided to stop in Casa Oaxaca. The owner, Guillermo, was very friendly and helped me find the perfect one, made of high-quality leather and meticulously hand-stitched on the seams. The shop itself is brimming with all kinds of beautiful items, almost all of which are hand-made and very detailed. Guillermo told me about the regular trips he makes to Mexico to obtain the items he sells in the shop, so you can rest assured that you're getting authentic products. He is actually from Oaxaca, so he's very knowledgeable about the origins and significance of what he sells. Other than the quality of the items, I was amazed by the sheer variety that was available. Everything from kitchenware to pottery to art pieces can be found in this colorful little shop, and he doesn't jack up the prices like some of the shi shi galleries which charge three times the price for the same exact item. All in all, I'd say you will not be disappointed should you decide to check out Casa Oaxaca.
