The surgery requires some 30-90 minutes. I spent the next 2 days in ICU and 19 days afterwards in a Franciscan Medical Facility for treatment. He had spilled bone marrow in my soft tissue, causing heterotopic ossification. Neede treatment for the ossification. I was discharged from the Fransiscan facility with a cardio-vascular problem, leading to a five-year recovery by treatment with medications., which ended mid 2021.

If my insurance company let me, I think I would continue to visit Dr. Broudy even if I didn't have a stupid arrhythmia to manage. He's very entertaining. A few visits ago, he was looking through my chart, and asked if I was related to a physician from another state who shares the same last name as me. After telling him we were not related, Dr. Broudy goes on to tell me the story of how the physician was attacked and killed by an alligator. See, entertaining, right?

When I was released he promised me I'd be put back together in 6-8 weeks. So at the 8 week mark, I called him and now he wants me to get a colonoscopy before I get put back together. So I had the colonoscopy April 1st and I call doctor Brakstad's office every week to try to schedule my final surgery and they say he's not here and that they'll take a message and get back to me. Well it's been 3 weeks and they haven't gotten back to me. Now I have to go through the hassle of finding somewhere else to put my intestines back together. I'm lucky I have such an understanding girlfriend.

The horrible performance of his staff drove me to find someone else to perform my surgery. When making appointment, I told the person I spoke with they would need to get hold of archived records from my earlier breast cancer treatment. She said, no problem, they would arrange that. Arrived for first meeting/consultation with Dr. Brakstad - no records were on hand. Left that meeting (on a Friday) having been told that on Monday I would hear from the plastic surgeon he recommends, and that we would move forward with scheduling surgery for the following week. By Wednesday morning, having heard nothing, I call the plastic surgeon's office to see if I can move things along. They have never heard of me, and tell me next week is now booked up. She'll check with Brakstad's office and get back to me. By end of that day, still have heard nothing. From anyone. I guess it's time to go back to the drawing board and find someone else to remove the cancerous tumor from my breast. I sure do hope the two weeks I've wasted on this disorganized operation are not the window of time when cancer cells will have a chance to migrate to other parts of my body.

Since that doctor I've had a long string of managed care zombies. Every single one has made a snap judgment based on the first symptom or two they heard and hustled me along. I had one doc say "You need to lose some weight" based on my BMI, not bothering to note that I was at the time a bodybuilder with single digit body fat (his advice would be correct nowadays, but again I digress). Dr. Friedman, who I chose totally at random as the nearest doctor who took my insurance, has been an unexpected joy. He's very kind, listens to his patients, doesn't rush you at all and seriously knows his stuff. He has also worked in the area for a very long time and has extensive connections in the local medical community. I've gotten a couple of referrals from him and they both worked out wonderfully. To be fair his office is a little dated-feeling and could use a facelift, but that hasn't affected the quality of care I've received at all. I'd much rather have a great doctor with a 70's-feeling office than a mediocre doctor in a state of the art facility, which seems all too common these days.

Doesn't simply try to do a "quick-fix" and get me out of the office and on to the next patient. When I'm with Dr. Martin I feel like I'm the ONLY patient she has. Also, rarely is there a wait. It would be handy if they told first time patients this to avoid circumstances like mine. Details: I had to schedule 2 months in advance for my appointment. I went to OH and couldn't find Dr. Martin's name on the directory, I called her office to ask for the suite number. They explained they are located a few blocks away from the hospital and gave me directions. I told them I needed to drive over, and it could take 10-15 minutes. I CONFIRMED THAT THIS MEANT I WOULD BE LATE, and asked if the timing would still work for the appointment. They said it would be just fine. I RAN to my car, sped over and ran to the desk. After being told to sit and wait a few minutes, a man who never introduced himself, sits down and says that Dr. Martin cannot see me today because I was late. I apologized, explained what happened and that I had some serious health issues for which I needed to be seen (blood clots etc). He said no. I asked if there was anyone who else who could see me (she is in a practice with other doctors), I'd even wait in the lobby for hours if that would help. He says no, that I have to reschedule with the front desk. At the front desk, I was informed that the person scheduled after my appointment did not show, so Dr. Martin was in her office, not with a patient, and should be able to see me. Receptionist returns, after speaking with Dr. Martin , and says she is sorry, but the doctor declined to see me and didn't want to come out of her office to talk to me. I then attempt to reschedule, and am told the wait will be, once again, LONGER than 2 months. Seriously? No thanks. To clarify, if she had other patients and couldn't fit me in that would have been on me. The fact that I was told to come, after I said I would be late, and then have Dr. Martin sit in her office and refuse to come out? I find that extremely unprofessional. Update: Just received a bill for a "missed appointment". SERIOUSLY!?
