Finally, I have found a good reason to comment on a campground that I have stayed at. My wife and I are very avid campers. Have over 40 years of tent camping, backpacking and now, it's RV'ing. We have been all over Washington State, Peninsula, Ocean, rain forest, NE Wa., SE, Wa., Islands, Canada, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. Our experience with campgrounds is very well founded. So let's get to the review. It has always been on our list to hit the big flea market thing in Packwood and this place was the only one who had anything available. We chose a site that had a full hookup for the RV. When we arrived they had a check in booth but they don't use it anymore so no problem, went inside to check in. According to the map we thought we were in the back by the river but, guess not.
The full hook up area is crazy funny. Finding your spot is a real challenge because the numbers are on the electric pole which is located in the back. Now, let me explain. If you draw a circle that is 3 feet in diameter, you will find the hook ups for 4 RV sits in that circle and that is the way it is all the way down the line. When I backed in I had to get as close as possible so that my slide out didn't hit the neighbors awning. I was able to get situated ok but now I cannot put my awning all the way out at 8 feet because it would hit the awning of the RV on the other side of me. My wife and I decided to walk around and see if there was something better, something with enough room to actually step out of your RV without bumping into another RV. We saw a few sites, called the office and was told that many of the sites were owned by others which you could see in some cases that yes, people did live there.
Eventually we found a site that would work for us. The sites in the Cascade loop all have power and water so that works great. We moved to 118 and moved our tag as asked. Now that we are settled, let me tell you about the campground. They do have 2 gazebos for family activities but the one we saw had people living in it. We saw 2 bathrooms but the one that was on our side of the park that served over 100 sites, had sani cans in front of the doors because they were out of order. Garbage cans? Good luck with that. We did find 4 30 gallon garbage cans on a trailer to use but later found out that all the garbage bags are thrown in a shed over by the store. I guess they don't want to pay for garbage service so this shed has garbage flowing out the sides and ends. A great place for rats I suppose, lol Oh wait, the best part is coming!!
Most people who have RV's know that when you back into a site that the hook ups are near the back drivers side of the RV. Not this place. The hook ups in all areas other than the full (crowded) hook up area are located on the street in front of the site and in many cases, they can be 20 to 30 feet down the road so bring lots of hose and electric extension. Many of the water spigots have been run over so there are no guarantees. Fire pits, they do have those. The fire pits are actually truck tire rims. Some sites have them, some don't. Some have 2 and many have been thrown in the bushes so you might want to look around. Wasn't a big deal to me because they had a state wide burn ban but some people didn't care. If you are one of those who don't care about rules like that, this is your place. With all considered, we thought we would take the dog for a walk down to the river. We always have dog poop bags to clean up after our dog but noticed that this place doesn't supply them and it showed so watch your step.
Some of the sites had picnic tables and we even had one at ours. There was a hole in the middle that was burned through at some point but nothing like some plastic stretched and stapled to cover it up. We drove around to look at the meadows area and it was no better organized than anything else but I will say this. If you drive right into Cascade Peaks and drive straight over to the meadows and set up out in the middle of nowhere, they would not even know you were there, nor would they care. A lot of folks over in that area are staying in places without numbers, a hundred yards from designated sites. Ok, I know you have been waiting for the best part so here it is. Along the path to the river we found lots of black berries. We were able to pick 6 cups and made 3 pints of blackberry jam when we got home and yes, we only picked the berries that were over 4 feet from the ground. Not trying to be funny with my review, just telling it as it is. The only thing I can find that is funny is any review from someone who actually thinks this place is nice. Oh shoot, if you love the smell of tractor exhaust, try their hay ride, it's killer!!! read more
