I had a great experience at this campground. It's a short walk from the day use park and the Falls. The campground offers potable water, bathrooms with showers and has a map of all nearby trails. I typically prefer more privacy in my site than what most of the campsites offered but it wasn't horrible. It did get loud at times from cars speeding by on the main road. Cell service was fair. I could send and receive texts but that was about it. Overall, it really depends on the kind of camper you are, but it still was a great experience. read more

Sweet lil campground right on the river. We headed from Moulton Falls to check out Sunset Falls, and where the pavement ends you arrive at Sunset day-use and campground. Honestly we assumed it was closed for the season, looked a bit unkept, only a couple of cars in the day use parking. The falls are lovely and peaceful with a gorgeous aqua pool just above. The whole grounds had a bit of an abandoned feel, but not in a bad way, as we always enjoy the off-season peace. We decided to wander over to the campground just to check things out. They've got some neat walk-in tent sites right at the rivers edge. The camper sites are cute, like a long narrow parking lot with curved pull-thru sites spread out pretty well. We walked up to read the sign and decided it must be open...no gate, trash bins out, and toilet doors unlocked. We grabbed a envelope, picked a site and paid. The sound of the rushing river all night with the place to ourselves, heck yeah. (Eventually one other camper did show up) Great river access, gorgeous falls, peace and quiet in the forest with no cell service equals good times. :) read more

This campground was def less maintained than where we usually camp, but you get what you pay for. Yes, the vault toilets were stinky, but the campground hosts stopped by daily to clean. There is no running water, so bring any water you may need for drinking and cooking. The camp sites in the regular part of the campground are all fairly open and right on the loop. The ones I thought were best in terms of privacy: 1, 3, 4, 6, 5 (site 5 - pad near actual road, but probably not much traffic at night). The ones I though weren't great in terms of privacy: 2, 7, 8, 9 (site 9 - tent pad is lower, away from loop, closer to overlooking the river, but picnic table and fire pit are right on the loop). The tent sites are walk-in. We stayed at site #11, which does have a little private trail to access the river. The site is private, accessible by a short trail off of the tent loop; however, the site is fairly small, and on a bit of an incline- so much that we couldn't use our canopy, and the picnic table (really big - made for giants apparently) is at the higher end, and might be a challenge for small children to use. We have a 6-person tent and it barely fit on the tent pad, there *might* be room for an additional smaller tent, but you'd be sleeping on tree roots and on an incline. Sites 12 and 13 are flat and out in the open and close to each other, they would be great for two parties camping together. Sites 14 and 15 are nice sites, both tucked back off the trail and both private. Our friends camped at Site 16, so that is where we spent most of our time. Site 16 is on the 'inside' of the loop, but you can still hear the river. It's nice, spacey and open, not as much privacy as 11, 14, and 15 because it's right on the trail, but it's fine. It's also easiest to get to because it's right off the paved trail that leads to the day-use. If we were to tent camp here again, I'd want to stay in Sites 14, 15, or 16. When we first arrived to the camp I was hit with remorse (because our friends drove all the way from Spokane) but once we walked the short 10-min to the swim area I knew we'd made the right choice! The waterfall/swimming area is soooo cool!!! We camped with a total of four kids, ages 5-10, and they were entertained for days with the various rock jumps and swimming. We all had a great time here. This review is for the day-use area, as we didn't camp here. It's $5 for day-use parking (cash only) if you don't have a NW Forest Pass (this is in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest). By PNW standards, these falls are on the small-side, but they are beautiful. The water is so clear, and takes on a pretty shade of blue in the deeper section. Overall this section of the river is very shallow and fishing isn't allowed. There are a few picnic tables & pit-grills. We were disappointed because there's no hiking trails here. Looking at the river is nice, and you can walk or lounge on the rocks on the river bank, but we really wanted to do some hiking. The campground seems very basic, with little amenities. Without anything else right there, I think it would be a pretty boring place to camp unless you just wanted to use it as your base camp while you explore the surrounding area like Moulton & Lucia Falls, etc. Oh, and there are a couple pit toilets, and they smelled absolutely awful...I had to hold my breath for fear of losing my lunch from the stench. read more

This is a nice peaceful campground just inside the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. During the day the falls were crowded but in the earlier morning and evening they were not. Either way they were still very pretty. No running water but the ports potty restrooms were kept pretty clean. I do like to hike though and there was a lack of hiking trails right at the campground. I know up the road a bit there are some hiking trails. Also there is no cell reception here so if you do need to make contact with the outside world you will need to drive about 3 miles down the road. read more

Oh my goodness. This was our first experience with our RV. We absolutely love this campground and have not yet found one we liked as much. The campground is clean, it's small, not massive, and sites have a good deal of space between them giving you a sense of privacy. The trail to the falls is beautiful, as are the falls. I was so excited to take my kids camping , I planned it and gathered everything we needed for weeks and weeks....I wanted some alone time/quality time with my kids....Lynn the camp host, she stole our money....said she never received it from the box, it was so blatent ....I paid her again but only for two nights not the original $48 for 4 nights ....it made me sick, why is she stealing from families trying to have a lil quality time and the worst part she wasn't even sneaky...she just lied straight to my face....im disgusted that she can even call herself a host and works for the state ???? Sunset Falls is a pretty decent campground just inside Gifford Pinchot National Forest on the Lewis River in SW Washington. With easy access from Portland, it's a good place to get out of cell range and into the woods without giving up a couple of the basic amenities like toilets. For $12/night you can get a spacious campsite that's actually fairly well-insulated from neighboring slips. Each site has your standard picnic table and fire pit as well as one sand pad for a large size tent. There is no electricity or running water (as opposed to what the website says) but there are vaulted pit toilets, which on a busy weekend are pretty rough. The location of the campground is great, right alongside the river and near Sunset Falls, a great day-use spot for swimming and jumping and floating. The road is paved all the way to the campground so it's easy for cars and RV's. A review of this campsite wouldn't be complete without mentioning the camp host - Ron. Ron is probably about 100 years old and he runs one hell of a tight ship. You won't be in your site more than a minute or two before Ron comes rolling up on his John Deere and signs you in. He doesn't miss a beat. And he'll be happy to tell you about how he has security onsite, he's had people arrested before for being too drunk, and how he's kicked people out for smoking marijuana, and all sorts of fun time stories. But don't worry if he goes on about his business too soon... you're sure to see him come rolling by your site on regular rounds. He'll offer up any info you want, and plenty you don't. And when you leave, he's quick to cruise in and turn over your site, getting it ready for the next tenants. But in the end, Ron is harmless, and the fact that the campsites are spaced out makes for a decently private (for organized campground standards) stay. I'd return! read more

This campground is easy to find and nice because it's so easy to get to. You can be there from pdx or Vancouver in less than an hour. The sites are clean and cozy. You can hear the river while resting in your tent- very peaceful. The camp hosts are friendly. They cruise around often to see if you need anything - firewood, directions to the falls, etc. The falls are very close. If it's warm you can jump off into the water or hang out in a raft. It's all very dog friendly also. No running water so be prepared to use a (clean) porta potty style bathroom but bring wipes for your hands and plenty of drinking water. There's no cell service but if you needed, you could drive a few miles back towards the highway to get reception. It's a gem of a spot - very relaxing. I had a great weekend unplugging from the world and relaxing. read more

Love this place. Its a beautiful location. The owner was super nice. When you go you are able to buy firewood there as well and I highly recommend it. The firewood I bought from winco had too big of pieces and one of them was rotten. The campsites was perfect and easy to burn. Its near Sunset falls which is beautiful and has a bench where you can stare at the beauty for as long as you want. Some of the campsites are a little close together but there are some that are secluded and are in the middle of the forest. Will be back within the next few weeks. read more

This campground is great! 4.5 stars Camp host 0 stars Pros- close to beautiful waterfalls Fire pits with grates tent pads Cons- no fishing No potable water Major cons- the camp host was a nightmare. We paid & set up our camp in the same spot I go to every time. (I tried reserving online but it said it was walk up only- so we got there early) around 8:45pm we are cooking dinner & a woman walks up & says it's hers. I told her the reservation sign posted ended today at 2pm & we were obviously already settled in. The host comes storming into our site saying it's reserved & we have to go. I calmly explain that it wasn't posted & she goes over to the post to prove me wrong- not posted. She didn't do her job. She tries saying "kids moved the signage" but the 2nd site this couple had reserved also had no reservation on it. She's yelling, but they paid! I said- ya, so did we! At 3:45 when we got here & set up. I told her it was a bit ridiculous to have us move at (now 9:15 and dark) in the middle of dinner. Plenty of other sites. Lies to the couple- blames us. Continues to be rude to us and talk shit within earshot. Magically her updated reservation signs were all up around the campground the next morning. She dropped the ball & tried blaming us. She is a nightmare. Ruined our weekend. read more

The camp host and her son were completely unprofessional and rude to my friends and I when we went camping. The woman yelled at me after I asked why we owed more for parking after I had already paid the $18 needed the day before. She proceeded to say she never received a payment from me without even first asking what name was on the envelope and even after I told her the name she still said she didn't have it. She then told me to get out of her way so she could drive over to my camp site to deal with this. I told her no one was at my campsite because everyone was down at the river while I was handling this, but she went anyway instead of just talking to me. Meanwhile her son just sitting back in his chair laughing at the whole thing. I honestly don't know if it was my hair or face or what but she was very aggressive towards me and I remember wondering why she was directing all this rage at me instead of just trying to first help figure out what happened. I started walking back to camp and I saw the host was at another camp site near mine. I wanted to go and talk to her and clear the air to see if she had figured out what had happened and when I approached the cart she told me to get away from her and raised her hand and pointed to my car where she had given me the tag I originally needed. Upon my arrival back into the campsite I was told she was found waiting for someone else to return where she proceeded to yell and harass them. It was a shameful display. A lot of my friends and I had been looking forward to this camping trip for over 3 months. The spot itself was nice and we had fun when we could, but I will probably not come back. read more

Positives - once we got there, the campsite was beautiful, clean, and spacious. Each site has enough foliage to be private but not too much if you want to combine camps and be friendly with neighbors. The park has a nice path to the river which leads to a very pretty swimming hole. Clean latrines. Negatives - DO NOT use the directions or address included in your ReserveAmerica confirmation email. Both are wrong. The address will take you to the Mt. Hood National Monument headquarters, not the campground. The directions don't reflect recent changes to I-5 exiting and street renaming. Bring a map, not your phone - service is unavailable by the time you reach the wrong location. Also, camp host did not allow purchase of firewood after dark. Reasons unclear (this was early, around 7:45 / 8pm just after sundown.) Which was a bummer, to say the least - if you follow the rules and don't bring your own wood from elsewhere, prepare for a cold, dark night. Finally, there is some local "flavor" in the area. Campers were woken around 3am when a truck full of locals drove through the area with horn blaring, lights flashing, screaming "the red coats are coming" So. That was.. interesting. It's a pretty spot but not sure if we'll be back. read more

It is unfortunate that my fiancee and I went for our first time and stopped the camp host to ask about how the parking functioned only to be spoken to very rudely. Needs a new camp host and this experience would have been perfect. Still, I reccomend the location to anyone wanting to freeze their butt off in some nice cold running water. read more

To be fair, its really not my kind of camping, but if you like to be in nature surrounded by mobs of people and trash making lots of mechanical noises, it might be okay. Its probably good for kids, which is why I reserved it, but then the kids couldn't go. Definitely don't go on a hot summer Saturday, and don't get Site #18! I didn't realize it was such a popular day-use area and party spot. Site 18 is basically a lawn between a parking lot, a road, and the caretaker's trailer (it was the only one available). During daylight hours the caretakers and their kids (guests, not the regular ones) were yelling constantly. Loud trucks blasting "music" sounded like they were driving right into my campsite as I attempted to sleep. Sleeping in my yard in Portland would have been significantly more peaceful. I did find some peace by walking downstream away from the popular falls. read more

WARNING: DO NOT HAVE FUN. Let me start off first by saying that the campground seems cheap, 12 dollars a night, but you are paying for nothing. This section of the river is closed to fishing, the water is not deep enough to swim, and from the campground you must walk down an incredibly steep slope to even touch water. OK, back to the fun subject. I recently stayed here with 2 of my buddies and it was around 7:30 (This is a summer 7:30) so completely light outside. We were playing a game of cards and having a good time (not being very quiet) but the people camped next door were being a bit rowdy with us, a general good time. This is when it went down. The 140 year old witch goblin stormed down from the mountain to reign terror over us. "You are being to loud! Show some respect or you guys are out of here!" it let out a huge roar and flew away on its bat like wings. This put a damper on our trip. Next morning we were out of there by 8 o' clock. I would highly recommend not to come here. This is one of few spots in the world where evil hags reek havoc upon those who dare try to have fun. Do yourself a favor and do not come here. We were very pleased by this small campground. It was a nice combination of space - well maintained yet still retaining its wild feel. The sound of the river can be heard from each site. These tent, non-electric sites are easily accessible. As stated in another review, the rough road that runs along the campground is not well traveled but a couple large trucks came through overnight and the noise woke me. Sites 1 - 5 back up to the road so sites 6 - 10 which are at the top of the embankment to the river are the preferred sites. It is a small campground so any traffic on the road will be heard. With the complaint about the occasional noise aside, the river and waterfalls located in the park are wonderful. On this Thursday and Friday morning in mid-September, we had the well-maintained trails to ourselves. Our dog loved wading the river and climbing the rocky shores, The leaves were just beginning to change and the river looked beautiful. We shared the campground with just one other couple but the other sites were almost all reserved for the weekend (the last weekend that they were reservable for the season, according to the camp host). My site was #5, nice but the road could be seen behind our tent. My chioice for the best site would be #6. Its at the back of the loop and is spacious. The site backs up to a steep drop-off to the river - I found it incredible and my dog found it challenging but I'd worry about small children at the site, Sites 1 - 6 are good size (2 and 3 next to the outhouse but spacious) but 7 & 8 although along the river, I thought were small and 9 & 10 were very small. UPDATE: it took complaining to the BBB and three other agencies, and about 2 dozen phone calls, but almost A MONTH LATER I have the refund I was promised. Insane. These people feel no remorse or guilt at all for their crappy customer service. I made reservations through reserveramerica.com in March for a July weekend. This was my anniversary weekend, but also ended up being the weekend of the 4th of July. I made it so early so we would have someplace to stay. Two weeks before my trip I get an email from Hoodoo saying that they mislabeled the site as a trailer site and it was tent only. The email said to call and cancel if I could not bring a trailer. Why it took so many months to catch their error, I don't know. I called and clarified WITH HOODOO CORPORATE AND RESERVE AMERICA that I had a tent, I was coming, and gave them my updated phone number. I drove two hours with all my stuff packed and my family crammed in my car to the campsite only to find it was already give to someone else. According to them, I was "supposed to call and didn't". I pointed out the email did not say I needed to call, and that I DID call anyway. Didn't matter, I had to drive ANOTHER two hours home. It was the holiday weekend and there was no one to call to ask for help or escalate this to. Finally, after the weekend, I call and call and get no answer from Hoodoo Corporate. I email and no answer. I send a form through their website and no answer. I finally send a tweet through twitter and get a response. I'm told that I need to call Reserve America and request a refund for Hoodoo's mistake before they will refund it. I call the number, I'm on the phone, transferred twice for an hour before the request is made. It is a week later and I still don't have a refund. I was told that a campsite manager would contact me about all of this because I told them that making ME do the work to get a refund when THEY canceled my reservation by mistake was completely unacceptable and they needed to make that right. A week after they said a manger would contact me, I heard nothing and asked why I had never heard. I was told that the refund is "being processed" and they "consider the matter closed". NEVER EVER EVER give these people your money. read more
