We had a wonderful experience! Staff were very friendly and helpful. The guides, Julia and Marissa, took photos and videos for us the entire ride and were knowledgeable about the animals are in great care with this sanctuary. We loved the dogs there as well roaming around living happy. Make sure to bring a carrot for the horses if you come! Highly recommended

Had a wonderful sunset experiancee, highly recommended!!! Upon arrival, they greeted me kindly and noticed I was fascinated by their farm life and gave me the amazing experience of feeding a baby goat only thing was, I had to catch him! well I caught him LOL the instructors very informative and cautious, as someone who has ridden horses many times, I did experience something new today. the sunset was breathtaking! and the trail was phenomenal. They also take videos along the trail and airdrop them to you! I can't recommend them more! Thank you for this amazing experience

We had a beautiful summer sunset ride with Marissa & Chris. Worth every penny to support this wonderful black owned business! If you're in Joshua Tree and love animals, this is the place for you.

So glad I found this place! We spent about an hour amongst the cutest horses, chickens, turkeys, dogs, and goats. BABY GOATS. This is an animal sanctuary and Chris was kind enough to share his stories about the animals, some which came from not so great pasts... but they are now living in comfort and clearly loved and cared for. It was such a lovely and unique way to spend an hour, and something we will never forget. Pro tip: stop by the Grocery Outlet before your visit and stock up on carrots for the horses, grapes for the goats (though they would probably eat anything you offered them), and veggies for the chickens and turkeys (we brought radishes and they were a hit!). You can book a guided trail ride and even camp/glamp out there amongst the stars and horses. An animal lover's dream!!

What an amazing experience! We stayed in the La Luna which was so spacious, beautifully furnished, and so peaceful. We warmed up to a fire at night which was conveniently located right next to the dome. Most importantly we enjoyed our time with the wild mustangs, the friendly doggies and the cutest baby goats. We loved doing the interactive experience with the horses and learning about the mustang sanctuary and the background stories for each of the horses. This trip was so magical and nothing really compares. I can't wait to come back! Heaven on earth.

We had a great time "glamping" here. Booking the yurt was easy. The property was nice and The animals were lovely! The staff was ok. Not overly friendly or welcoming to be honest. But that is what it is. The tent itself was nice and spacious enough. The I really took one star off because the damn rooster crowed all night long. I don't know how anyone got a wink of sleep. Next time... ear plugs.

Amazing experience, host Chris was great and answered all our inquisitive questions. Make sure to bring carrots for the horses and grapes for the goats... you're allowed to be in the area with the goats, ducks, and chickens. The goats climb all over you, are super docile and adorable. Dress for utility; the goats with nibble anything including clothes & shoes. The horses you feed from outside the fence. Also lots of cute pups on property! We didn't stay overnight, just booked an hour visitation with the animals. A must do in Joshua Tree! (A bit tricky to find, it's off a dirt road but the address is correct; it will take you to a dirt driveway with two silver horse statues at the front.)

Absolutely amazing experience. The sunset trail ride was perfect for us. You arrive 30 min prior to your departure and there's plenty of goats and dogs to spend your time with. Shout out to Buttercup for being the best and gassiest trail partner. Also thank you to Chris for being a very caring and helpful guide.

Beautiful and peaceful long trail ride through the desert and oasis. The horses were very well cared for and staff was authentic and experienced wranglers. Facility is clean and the owners of the Ranch were beyond welcoming. Be sure to have your camera ready for stunning views and listen to the wranglers as they share stories, histories, landmarks and horsemanship. We plan to make this an annual tradition in our family.

We loved our visit to this sanctuary. All of the animals were happy and friendly. Our family and toddlers had a great time together and we made a donation to the sanctuary.

I enjoyed my evening horse back ride through the desert. It was very serene and a great way to spend the evening.

At least they didn't show it . The price ($200 pp) was reasonable considering we rode the horses for an hour and a half. We went horseback riding through the Indian Canyon. Beautiful views around the palm trees. I even wanted to get off the horse and hike around LOL. They do ask for your height and weight when you fill out the agreement form. The guides will match you with a horse that is obviously suited for you. I was apparently matched with the grumpy one LOL. Still a cutie pie! I was definitely nervous since it was my first time riding a horse. Our guide was super sweet and very helpful so that helped ease my nervousness a bit and It turned out to be an amazing experience and I'll definitely do it again!

The first ride was a 2-hour sunset ride with my sister and niece, and the second was the 4-hour Wranger Special all by myself, only 3 weeks later, because this place is just that fun! All ranches that offer horseback riding are not equal. I have been to a couple ranches where they simply run it like a machine with little to no respect, having horses ride constantly throughout the day with little rest. Knob Hill Ranch takes a different approach, and after sitting with Madeline and Michael for a length of time after my 2nd ride, I learned that Knob Hill is on a different level than most ranches you'll encounter. Horses at Knob Hill are treated with such compassion and care. A horse only rides once a day, and that alone was enough for me to know I can trust the way this ranch is ran. They have a deep respect, for not only the horses, but the land as well, and you will feel it as soon as you get there. There is something sacred under the lands surface, and it feels as though the ranch is operating in such a beautiful way, because they're mirroring the sacred beauty and elegance that lies beneath the soil. Oh, and it's worth mentioning, they host equine therapy on their land as well, along with sound baths for folks. I mean, this ranch is dabbling into all things that revolve around healing and cultivating a calm and peaceful environment. Once you experience it, how could you not want to go back?! And for me, it's a 6 hour drive each way, totally worth it. After reading this novel of a review, it is clear this ranch is operating with a deep heart-centered intention, so they're not surface level folks running a machine to make money. And, if you're tired of surface level conversations about sports and weather, like myself, these are the folks you can dive deep into conversation with about life, and leave the surface level topics behind. They're providing an area on Earth for us to connect not only with horses and nature, but ourselves. Much gratitude toward Michael and Madeline!

In an area where there is an overabundance of loose or dumped…read moreanimals and backyard breeders, this no-kill facility does their best to accept as many animals as space and funding responsibly allow. Sometimes people wanting to surrender an animal might hear a no and become confused and upset- as some of the lower starred reviews reflect- but those people do have the option of surrendering their animal to the city or county-run shelters in 29 Palms or Yucca Valley (or doing the work of rehoming their animals themselves). Staff here obviously do the best they can and prioritize the animals. This facility is clean, the animals are well cared for, and the employees are very invested in the placement of their cats and dogs. I appreciate that they work hard to find the right fit for each animal to increase the chances that each placement is forever. The adoption fees are also an absolute steal considering the fact that the animals are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, healthy, etc. Earlier this year, I adopted a kitten from the MBHS and that decision might be one of the best choices of my life so far. Whoever socialized my cat did an amazing job because she is confident, playful, curious, snuggly, and good-natured. She's been a joy and I can tell that the folks at the Humane Society invested a lot of time and care into her. Also, since the MBHS already had her spayed, I didn't have to deal with a week of an unhappy cone-wearing cat which, honestly, is worth the adoption fee right there. The Morongo Basin Humane Society is a community treasure and deserves as much support as possible.

It pains me to write a review like this for an organization I once loved and supported, but recent…read moreevents involving JTNKS' euthanasia practices and mismanagement of community-raised funds have compelled me to speak out. I write this as a former employee, foster, and adopter of the last 18 months. On June 13th, 2026 the President (also Shelter Vet) and Vice President of JTNKS made the unilateral decision to euthanize a dog in their care without following euthanasia protocol, contacting additional support, or attempting to de-escalate the situation in any way. Boone was a sweet 2 year old boy who had overcome a troubled start to life and made immense strides since his time at JTNKS. He had bonded with kennel staff and could easily be handled by capable volunteers for dog walks and play time. Although fearful of strangers and prone to barking, he had no incidents of bites, lunging, or aggression. Boone was waiting patiently for his forever home with someone who would help him overcome his fears. June 13 at 9 am, Boone was scheduled to be picked up from his current foster home. Here he had been relaxing for the last 4 weeks with a highly experienced foster. He had been getting structured daily walks, had his diet improved, and bonded and cuddled with the foster's cats. His pickup by the JTNKS President was a preventable disaster. Despite knowing Boone's history and fear, the President showed an abysmal display of animal handling skills. She attempted to muzzle a dog with a history of excessive rabies pole use that made him very sensitive around his neck. She neglected to call in any number of people who had bonded with Boone to help her handle and move him when she was unable to. She neglected to try any form of chemical restraints to lower his anxiety and fear during the transition. She set him up for failure and made him pay the price for her own shortcomings. At 1:23 June 13 his body was cremated at VCA. He was brought in already euthanized. Supposedly he was deemed too aggressive and needed to be killed for safety. Boone was a dog I loved deeply, and his death leaves me with many questions. At what point was the decision made to euthanize him? Was the Board of Directors informed? Why were JTNKS behavioral euthanasia protocols not followed? Why were staff, volunteers, or fosters who knew Boone not contacted for help? Why was a dog with no documented bite history euthanized? If he was truly too dangerous to handle, how was euthanasia safely administered? Why did he remain listed on the website for ten days after his death, and why was his foster told he had gone to another home? To my knowledge this was only the second time the President had ever met or tried to handle Boone. This is a person who is not qualified to handle shelter animals if her immediate reaction is to euthanize. The entire high desert community should be outraged at these actions. JTNKS touts itself as a place where animals can go for safety and even claim they want to "end euthanasia in our region". Well JTNKS, perhaps you can start that mission with yourselves. Shame on all of you. While a completely separate issue, the JTNKS shelter has wasted $597,000 on new shelter buildings that are completely unusable. These buildings have been deemed to have so many issues with their materials, spacing, design that it was decided they would have to be sold back or completely redone. This project has been bungled from the start and I cannot stress this enough: DO NOT GIVE MONEY TO THIS ORGANIZATION. They do not keep accurate books or budgets. They have no idea what they are spending on or how to manage large projects. They are lighting piles of cash from Woof Walk and estate donations on fire. Your donations are being abused and are not going to the well being of the animals. $250,000 was also donated from the County for these buildings so even if you haven't personally donated, know that your tax dollars are also being squandered at the Joshua Tree No-Kill Shelter.
