You can really tell how much attention, care, and work they put into giving their cats a good home. Every cat has to start somewhere, and STMM gives them a great environment to learn to socialize and adapt to not being in the dangerous situations that they were rescued from! I've watched many of their cats go from extremely anti-social to snuggly in their time with this organization. I have adopted two cats from them, and helped a roommate adopt one as well. They are extremely helpful and as long as you communicate, they give you a lot of grace throughout the adoption process! If you're not looking to adopt a cat, you're also just free to hang out and play with the kitties! I end up going just for a third space to do homework and stuff! They have snacks and drinks for sale that you can enjoy during your stay as well. They also have a ton of great goodies in the shop portion of the space, and you can even buy collars or accessories for the lounge cats to wear! Overall, I've never had a bad experience here. Dr. Marty's Essential Blend and Tilly's Treasures as a food topper. I brought rope toys, stuffed animals and one of Bella's favorite unopened toy; a stuffed gator. I used to sing the song to her, "gator face, you've got the cutest little gator face, no one is ever going to take your place, gator face, You are my whole wide world, you are my cutest girl. We adopted our new dog Jet here and had a positive experience overall. Everyone we met was kind, and it was clear the staff genuinely cares about the animals despite limited resources. Jet was clean when we met him and appears to be in great health. We also appreciated how understanding the adoption coordinator was about allowing a proper meet and greet with our senior dog Gus (15 years old, 14 pounds, and very dog selective), which helped us feel confident in the match. This shelter is very full and many dogs have been waiting a long time (6 months to 2 years). Compared to shelters that get more attention and donations, this location in Desert Hot Springs is less visible and easy to miss, and many dogs are housed outdoors in extreme desert conditions. We only met Jet because we came back multiple times and asked for a full tour. I understand it can be stressful for the dogs, but the reality is many won't be seen otherwise. Jet was not what we planned to adopt (we originally came looking for a small female), but he's a calm 50 pound sweetheart and we couldn't be happier. If you're considering adopting, take your time, ask questions, and ask to see all available dogs. Dogs that are dumped or pulled from shelters are brought into the pet rescue center, rehabilitated of necessary, receive training in basic obedience and agility as well as spay/neuter, vaccines, microchipping, and a veterinary exam. The rescue ensures the right for for both dog and owner and on multiple occasions the director has said I know you want her but this is who you need and avoided a placement that would have caused frustration for all involved. She ensures that if a dog is found every attempt is made to reconnect it with it family even when the family is sadly unappreciative of this. They have training classes to fundraise for the rescue and would love more volunteers :) I find visiting this place to be zen as I am sure the dogs do also.

Take pictures of everything, because you never know when it might come back to bite you. I recently adopted a beautiful dog who, unfortunately, wasn't compatible with our sweet Lab that we've had for 8 years. Because it wasn't working out, we made the decision to return the dog. When I first received her, she was extremely skinny. I could see her bones, and honestly, my first thought was, "What were they even feeding her?" But because I wasn't familiar with her breed, I thought maybe that was just how she was built. After we returned her, I was shocked to have someone call for a welfare check and be told that an animal cruelty complaint had been made against me because the dog was supposedly returned skinny. That really hurt and frustrated me because I would never intentionally hurt an animal. Of course, they don't know me personally, but I know the kind of person I am and how much I care about animals. So please take this as a heads-up for anyone adopting: Document the condition of the animal when you receive them. Take pictures and, if possible, keep any paperwork or records you receive from the shelter. You just never know what could happen if the adoption doesn't work out. I'm sharing this because I wish someone had told me this beforehand.
