Starter from the buffet
Jan K.

As a highlight in our family trip to Berlin we were looking for a good greek restaurant. Following several good reviews, we decided to try the Taverna. The reservation on a Monday night went very smoothly, we got a table for 5 just 45min in advance. The setting is very open, modern, and just like the menu not what you'd expect from your typical "Greek Restaurant around the corner". Nevertheless, it has some appeal to it and with lots of artwork on the walls an interesting flair. We figured at some point through the evening that the open room does contribute to a rather high ambient noise level which makes a conversation at the table somewhat uncomfortable. The menu, with few exceptions, again is not representative for a "typical greek", but by and large features good and intresting selections. From the dishes we've tried, the starter plate from the buffet probably came closest to what we expected to be "greek". However, to be fair and clear, everything we tried was good to very good - with the exception of the Ruccola Salad, which came very oily and with more than acceptable slush pieces. A word on the service, which was professional from start to finish. We asked twice for advice on an decision what to choose (once for a main dish, once for the wine). Both times the chief server didn't seem to care too much about the choice in itself but simply recommended the mire expensive choice. While choice proved to be good in both cases, we can't really say if he recommended that for the better choice or higher price... That said, the evening turned out to be a nice and enjoyable one. We wouldn't rate the Taverna on the highest position of our favorites, but it's a very good place to go and enjoy some good quality food.

Amazing lamb chops.

I haven't a single bad thing to say about this place. I had amazing wine, lamb chops and service. We started with a mixture of cold appetizers by weight, which out server generously prepared for us. My counterpart loved the fish dish which was deboned table side. I personally ate the lamb chops, and could have had a second helping. The decor is an eclectic mix of art work that gives you a modern museum feel. Anytime I visit Berlin this will be my first stop!

Location was good near two major hotels…read more Wait time was low, and we were pleasently greated on entry an dfound a nic etable by a window. I was underwhelmed and disappointed with the preparation of moussaka that was served cold - seemed to have been microwaved to warm it up a bit and then had grilled cheese on top. Also far too much pasta prepared for a 5 year old child in a huge bowl. Seemingly no half portion or child menu available. The other two meals were mearly "average". Shrug of shoulder when above comments were made when dining. Shame as it was a seemingly nice venue over the Christmas period. In my view, for what we had it was overpriced and not good value given the poor food served.

Staff were very very friendly and pleasant. I didn't get our servers name but he had smile on his face the whole time and he was very nice. We ordered The Ja! Niko Ja! - which was phenomenal and very generous serving. My brother in law enjoyed it very much. I ordered the Grilled Octopus - came with 2 big tentacles. It was grilled to perfection. It was very tender and flavorful! It was delicious! My sister ordered the steak & chicken kebab with rice. She also enjoyed her food and wasn't able to finish it because it was so much food. The salads that came with our meal were very fresh. The complimentary bread came out warm, soft in the inside and crunchy on the outside. We dipped them in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It was sooo good! We asked for another basket of bread. :) Also, they came around and gave everyone in the restaurant free shots of alcohol. My sister and brother in law doesn't really drink so we gave ours away to the table behind us. Our server still asked if we wanted something else from the bar.. how nice is he?!? I said I didn't want anything strong, so he gave me something light and sweet. :) Service and food were excellent for us, so Im giving them a 5 Star!!! Would definitely recommend and come back!

The staff, even if sometimes a bit slow, is really friendly and always makes good suggestions and tell you what is on offer that day. The place is cozy and the atmosphere is the place is really friendly and it's almost always full. But it is of course the good food, we always come for. They have really good starters, we especially enjoy the taramas which is delicious. Pretty much all the main dishes we have tried so far were great. The meat is always fresh and really tender, fish was also always really tasty, the moussaka is really good, etc. In general we really enjoy returning here every time and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys greek cuisine.

As I don't speak German except for a few words it's nice when the restaurant staff can speak English. Well this place they don't really speak English so you got to have an idea about Greek food. They did have English menus. I was able to communicate a bit with help of the next table explaining if I wanted fried or steamed potatoes etc. I ordered the gyro with that tk???? The place was empty but we reminded ourselves that dinner starts a bit later here. We were greeted with a complimentary Ouzo shot (which continued to be refilled) & started with the Tarama. The dip came in 4 scoops and was pink. Although I've never seen pink Tarama, It wasn't the best Tarama that I've ever had and was okay. (But wouldn't order this one again) We also ordered Spanakopita which we enjoyed. For main, we had the "grilled meat for one"which was excellent (tasty grilled chicken, pork & Gyros!) but is really "Grilled meat for 2 or 3." We ended up sharing this which was a good idea as we couldn't finish it. After dinner, we received complimentary Cognac, espresso and dessert (fruit, yogurt) which was a nice touch and the restaurant was packed by the end of our meal. Overall, great service, food and atmosphere!

Not special in any way, simply grilled. Overall the dishes are large and greasy and heavy. 90% of the people here eat meat. The mussels appetizer we didn't really enjoy (personal preference). The appetizer plate allowed us to taste a bit from everything. What's good are the grilled eggplants and the white creamy dip (not tzaziki). Besides that I'd also recommend to skip the plate, everything else was ok. Why would I still give 4 stars? - The Service is very thoughtful! You get free shots and if you don't drink them, they have us espresso for free. You get fruits at the end. Just overall asteria seems to care about the experience their customers are having!
