After months of kicking around joining a Jiu Jitsu gym I asked a couple killers I know. Most recommended I check out Cassio. I checked it out and found it to be a great environment as a new guy. Everyone is very helpful and positive. I'm impressed with Cassio's ability to explain HOW a technique works and not just repeating the steps. He usually goes into concepts like balance and leverage. He also brings up differences in body types. It's clear he really thinks of ways to explain different aspects of techniques that make it easier to learn for all levels. He also gives attention to all students regardless of their level which is contagious leading to higher level students taking the time to explain techniques when rolling. While in town for work, I decided to do a tour of BJJ training centers. Cassio Werneck's was my second day. They charge a $25 mat fee which is a little higher than most ($20 average). The students and staff were very friendly and welcoming. The gym is very spacious. Professor Werneck was amazing, great instruction and technique. After warm up and some instruction/practice was 6 minute rounds free rolling. No big heads or attitudes, all were professional and helpful. Cassio Werneck's World Class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Sacramento is by far the best Jiu Jitsu school I've ever trained at, and I've trained all over the world. I've been practicing here for over 3 years, and everything about the place is and has always been top notch. Cassio's top priority is his students' safety. He keeps the mats very clean to protect against infections; he pairs new students with higher belts so that they can learn without getting injured; he looks out for people getting overly aggressive and will call them on it... not that it happens often. Everyone at the school is very friendly and eager to help others learn while avoiding injuries. We're like one giant family. This is not a place where meathead wannabe MMA roidfreaks come to train. However, don't be surprised if you see some of the world's best fighters pop in once in a while. Cassio and other blackbelt instructors like Marcos Torregrosa are world-renowned jiu jitsu champions. The level of instruction here is amazing. I did karate for 3 years in my teens and I thought I was a pretty tough guy but when I first started jiu jitsu I was getting utterly destroyed on the ground.. it wasn't even funny. Most real fights are going to the ground so you better get comfortable with it. Even with just 1 month of training, vs the random guy on the street who doesn't know anything, you will have such a huge advantage.. it's unbelievable. While we do cover some simple tactics for street fights once in a while, most of the training is focused on sport/tournament style jiu jitsu. Everything you learn will be useful on the street though. The school offers kids classes and adult classes. For teens, I'd recommend the adult classes. You'll get more people your size, and on top of that you'll get to know a lot of positive, successful guys who would make good role models. If your kid lacks confidence, lacks an authority figure, lacks respect, is out of shape, send him our way. This is a great sport for older adults as well. It's very low impact, and the pace can be as fast or slow as you want. For kids, the school offers only gi classes. For adults there are both gi and no-gi classes. I basically stopped going to the gym because this is such a good workout. It sure beats the monotony of lifting weights and running the treadmill. I went looking for a decent place to learn jiujitsu, what I got was the best dojo I've ever set foot in, an instructor that is a legend, and classmates that have become such close friends they're practically family. Before you read on I recommend that to attain the most accurate picture of what makes this place so near and dear to my heart, come by and see the it for yourself. That's what I did years ago and it was one of the smartest decisions I've ever made. The best qualities of this dojo stem from the instructor, Cassio Werneck. His record as a competitor on the world stage speaks for itself and he is one of those rare individuals that is a champion both on and off the mat. He is the most approachable and friendly Sensei I've ever had the privilege to study under. During classes he is constantly watching his students, personally correcting their form and ensuring a safe and fun training environment. While he is serious about helping us he frequently interjects humor in his classes and let me just say there is no joke like a Cassio joke! Apart from Cassio there are a number of other black belts that are excellent instructors in their own right and will not only aid him in demonstrations but will personally teach students as well.
