We arrived and were shown to a large, square table that allowed all of us to see each other. The staff was immediately very friendly and welcoming, and brought out an amuse bouche and fresh bread. I find bread in Italy often leaves much to be desired, but the bread at Il Celliere was incredible. I started with a pasta served with a tomato sauce and pecorino cream, which was delicious, followed by the vegetarian eggplant dish which was also great. One person in our party had a porcini dish (they have a separate porcini menu which is more expensive than their other dishes) which she was really happy with. We shared many bottles of wine, including one beautiful Tuscan red served to us in huge glasses as a celebratory bottle for my dad's birthday. From start to finish, this meal was fabulous. It's run by a family (mom in the kitchen, kids in the front of the house), and when we told the staff how much we loved the food they brought mom out so we could thank her in person. Wonderful side trip!…read more I discovered the De Ricci winery through travel friends who invited me on this enchanting tour, found on TripAdvisor for $31. I learned about the wine, the Etruscan history in Tuscany, and got to visit an ancient underground Etruscan temple! The wines offered during the tasting were lovely, most of them made with the sangiovese grape family. Fun fact: What animal is on the wine label? If I were to do this again, Id choose the other package on Trip Advisor for $39, as that included a sommelier. As this was, we were left to our own devices. Still fun but not completely satisfying. The little town of Montepulciano has an interesting history, as explained by our Montepukciano De Ricci wine tour guide. I wont share because its definitely part of the fun of the visit. The tiny town has a marvelous chocolate shop, museum and s tower which you can climb (only 75 steps!) and take incredible photos of the Tuscan countryside.

She was very friendly and answered all of our questions thoroughly in English. The wine tasting was excellent and she made it easy to purchase and ship a case home. We were fortunate to time our visit just before the harvest as we were able to sample the grapes as we strolled through the vineyards, accompanied by the family cat, Attilio. Elena's father joined us during the tasting and while he spoke no English, was clearly happy we were there, sampling the wines. The tour is one of our favorite memories of our two weeks in Italy. When we make it back, Poggio al Bosco will be on the itinerary.

Our tour guide, Daniella, explained the wines and motivation of Canneto while in the barrel room and made sure we had a fun tasting. The wines were all big and expressive of the land, packing a real punch without letting the alcohol overpower the taste of the grapes. Canneto is doing well recognizing their strength as a smaller producer in creating superior wines.
