You can get a mountain top view of Lisbon if you go to the Castle of St. George. The castle is fun to walk around but if you come up here during sunset, the views are spectacular. We walked around the grounds by ourselves and it was fine. There was a cafe but we didn't try the food or drinks inside. Would definitely recommend this if you have a late afternoon/early evening free to see Lisbon as the sun sets. read more

São Jorge is a medieval castle perched high above the city of Lisbon and the River Tagus. I enjoyed my hike up through the city to the castle almost as much as poking around the castle itself. My journey there included plenty of street art, lots of antique tile facades, expansive views and plenty of people watching. But don't dare wear heels or other impractical shoes, for the streets of Lisbon are cobblestone (beautiful, but mostly uneven). Once you get up to the castle, pay your €7.50 admission and have a nosy around in every nook and cranny. Climb the narrow stairs to the highest point (hold onto the railings, there are ominous signs warns of death by falling) and take in the panoramic views. From up here, you can see the entire city. If you do it at a leisurely pace and stop for plenty of pictures, plan for the trip up and back from the city centre to take around two hours (well worth it). read more

This is definitely a 5. It comes up as number one on most lists of Lisbon. It's not super cheap- 8 euros for an adult, but it's definitely worth it. The views are superb. We were here on a clear morning- gorgeous. Try to go here in good weather- you need it for your pictures. We walked around the bottom level, the took the narrow, steep stairs up to the top and walked the ramparts. Very impressive. There's a coffee shop, a wine cart (wine with a view!) and great bathrooms- including a fab handicapped bathroom- though how you'd get a handicapped person up there I've no idea. We enjoyed the included museum. It's small but nice. We did not take a tour- I kind of wish we had, but we just didn't have the time. read more

Honestly a bit torn with the experience here. The price is €8 to get in and honestly it's worth it purely for the amazing views of the city. The castle itself is not anything to brag home about and it's very commercialized. They have coffee shops, restaurants, gift shops scattered all over the castle grounds. The views are unreal! We lucked out and the clouds had cleared so we had crystal clear views of Cristo, the 25 se Abril bridge, Lisbon Cathedral, and so much more! Aim for a clear day and the views will not disappoint. The rest is just sort of meh. I would highly recommend taking the 28 Tram up to the Miraduro de Santa Luzia and then walk the 5-10 minutes up to the castle. There is a ton to see and the streets are so cute. BRING STURDY WALKING SHOES. Like all of Lisbon, there are cobblestone roads. But unlike the rest of the city, the cobblestones in the castle area are very uneven. I was wearing great walking shoes and still almost rolled my ankle. read more

Going at sunset was a great choice. It was absolutely beautiful. However, I would do the climbing part of the castle before sunset. There are many ways to fall to your death while exploring the castle. No handrails, uneven steps, low walls, the place has it all. I will never understand people, and their search for the perfect shot, doing incredibly stupid things like hanging over the edge of the castle or standing on a wall that has a 100 foot drop off the side. Until age 25 it's half price to get in, which is great for students. The museum part is small and interesting. It empties into the gift shop. I would be cautious about bringing really little kids because the safety features that I expect at most places are glaringly absent here. It helps keep the charm and the look of the place, but I could imagine a child plummeting off a rooftop. There are lots of gift shops right around it, if you walk about three minutes down the hill the gifts become much cheaper. You can take Tram 28 to the stop by the church and statue in Alfama and then walk up. It will take you about 10 minutes to walk up the hill, it's not a hard walk. read more

They appear to have a nice restaurant and an outdoor cafe, but I'd recommend you bring a sammie and a bottle and park under a pine tree. Cool Moorish castle with some gorgeous views of the historic center of Lisbon as well as the Tagus River. You can even see the 25 de Abril Bridge in the distance. Depending on where you're coming here from and your mode of transportation (I used my feet), it can feel like a pilgrimage of sorts getting to the front gate, which I rather enjoyed. Once within the walls of this well fortified castle it's easy to appreciate the absolute beauty of Lisbon as well as the medieval architecture this castle preserves. I made a point to visit every nook and cranny in and around the castle. There is a lot to see and take in and stopping by here is worth the journey. read more

Built in the 11th Century, this is one of Lisbon's most famous landmarks. It is a very difficult walk to get up to see it but, it is well worth the effort. The views from the top of the city are stunning so make sure you take the time and take photos. Make sure if you visit that you wear comfortable shoes as the walking surfaces are very uneven and filled with rocks and boulders. If you choose you can take a public trolly or a taxi or even an Uber if you don't want to take the strenuous walk. What ever you choose it is a must see. read more

I went to this Castelo as part of a tour and we all agreed that there isn't much to it besides the views. For 10 euros the experience takes less than one hour and that included taking lots of pictures, speaking to the peacocks and getting coffee. Lots of walkways were closed and the views were pretty similar no matter where you stood. Lots of steep stairs which may be hard if you come with young children in a stroller. read more

One of the more popular attractions to see in Lisbon, and I can understand why. Not only is the structure itself cool to see, but the views from there are absolutely beautiful. You can easily see the water, city, and more - I'd say the view is a selling point on going. There's a little cafe located inside the park area and it's nice to grab yourself a coffee and find a seat outdoors. It's nice to just relax in the park and enjoy your surroundings. Would certainly recommend that anyone goes while visiting the city. read more

This is a great mid evil Moorish castle which hovers above Lisbon on the above mountain side. This is one of the best preserved Moorish castles that I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Travelers cannot leave without seeing this engineering marvel. At every different level there is a great panoramic view which should not be missed. Watch out for the peacocks walking around. Climbing the wall is not recommended for those afraid of heights. read more

What fun to visit the ancient walled city and great castle sitting atop one of the most scenic views in Lisbon! This is a great way to spend a few hours within the tranquil gardens, hiking along the ramparts and catwalks, exploring the interiors of the ancient ruins- checking out the MOAT. The views from the castle alone are worth the 8 euros to enter. Look up! There are peacocks roosting in the ancient trees above your head! The museum within the walls will only take 10 minutes but are worth a see just for the interiors alone- the iron gates and doors are impressive in their own right. But of course, the ancient pottery shards and tiles are interesting too (if not riveting). The entire castle is paved in ancient cobbles, and there are many stairs to climb. Often there is only one way in/out, and some surprisingly difficult "staircases". I was surprised to find my legs fatigue after a few hours scrambling round here! Half of the fun of the castle is hiking back down the hill along the narrow cobbled streets and terraced vistas. There are many photo ops here as the entire district is photo worthy! Not much to this castle. A lot of it isn't accessible either. So you are basically wander around the bare skeleton of the walls and the part being excavated. Not much there. Now the views are amazing. Not that you really need to go in to see them.... you just have more of a variety of them. Now if you just wan to lounge and take in the views this might be for you. There are many other places to find views.... Overall I don't think I would pay to go into this castle again. This castle feels more fortish... but I did some good pictures of the city. read more

This place is absolutely amazing. Go back hundreds of years ago - and you will find yourself in a fantastic maze of shops, good food, all surrounded by large castle like walls. Honestly, this was one of my favourite places travelling through Europe and it should be yours too! There's a bunch of amazing food shops, bakeries and such that will appeal to any foodie. Great views, though the castle itself isn't very special. It's also quite expensive for just taking in the awesome views of Lisbon at €8.50 for adults. The castle is located on a hill, so take tram 28 and get off them walk the rest. There's also a camera obscura included in the ticket, and the guide explains Lisbon as you see it. It's quite cool, would recommend that part! I wouldn't highly recommend coming into the castle, as if you just walk around the Alfama, you're sure to get great views of the city just as well for free! read more

Castelo de S. Jorge in Lisbon, Portugal is a magnificent castle that overlooks the entire city and is an awesome place to visit. I like places that let me climb over everything with minimal supervision and this place is that. The views of the city and the water are amazing as you can get a 360 view depending on what part of the castle and grounds you are on. I like being able to go up the steps of the castle as there is a little element of danger involved, but it is totally worth it to be in a castle. I can imagine myself being here back in the day and how cool it must have been. This place has a good water fountain that is good for a hot day and plenty of shade to cool off. There is even peacocks and other animals on the grounds to see and play with. This castle is memorable and awesome. read more

This is definitely a must see in Lisbon for visitors to the city. I am a fan of going to castles anyway, but I would suggest this is worth a look even for those most wary of historic tourist sites. A few warnings though, it is up some very big hills so wear the right shoes and take water if you are going to walk. It also gets very busy at lunch time and also very hot when it is summer so try and go early morning to avoid the heat and long queues. Other than that it is a big site with turrets, narrow walk ways, cannons and amazing views. Basically everything is there that you would generally expect from a castle. You would be missing a key site if you did not spend a few hours wandering the castle on a visit to Lisbon. read more

The castle can be very clearly seen from the town underneath. One of the main attractions of Lisbon and a must see. It is a long walk up so taking a bus or other means is highly recommended. From the main town square, take bus 737, which is a small bus and not the standard long-type bus, and it will take you along winding roads and all the way up to the castle's entrance. Caution, the bus will get packed like sardines. There will be hoards of people but the castle is so large you won't feel the crowd. Once in, walk around the main square and the outskirts of the castle walls for breathtaking views of the city and waterways. Photo ops galore! Then get into the interior of the walls as well as up the walls. Walk its perimeter and you'll have more photo ops with all the different views. Caution, steps are high and narrow and the railings are low. Some areas don't even have any rails so be careful not to fall over, especially trying to navigate the walkways with hundreds of other tourists. They do offer free guided tours but we opted not to as the internet provided plenty of info. read more

Top of hill, the views are wonderful. There's usually a line to get in to buy your ticket, and it can get a bit crowded, but come anyway. Getting here is half the fun, all the shops and bars and restaurants along the way, much to see. Walk around and get a sense of the place, it's great. Enjoy! read more

Wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to go up and down steps, walk on a lot of cobblestones and dirt/mud. Very reasonable entry fee, the Lisboa card gets you a discount. The best part of the castle is it's sweeping views of Lisbon. It's a decent trek uphill, but definitely worth the walk because the roads up are full of charm. The castle consists mostly of walls and towers, so it didn't take us more than an hour to walk around. You can't really enter the towers, you can just climb to the top of them and take in the view. One of the towers has a periscope exhibit that's definitely worth seeing. There is also an archaeology site that has the foundational remains of buildings within the fortification, but you can only access this site on a guided tour (that's included in admission to the castle). The castle isn't great for small children because of all the stairs and narrow pathways. read more

I love this! Best views of Lisbon! In the highest spot of Lisbon too. But it's a must see. You can brace yourself and walk all the way up. Or take the tram 28 and walk up. Uber it if you don't feel like climbing up the narrow cobble stone roads. Either way, you must come here for the view. This castle is a gorgeous medieval structure on one of the highest hills in the city. Dating back to the 7th century BC there is a tremendous amount for history buffs and casual tourists alike at the Moorish castle. Be careful though, the website is a bit misleading and the tour of the castle is not three times a day in English, only once at 4pm! This is a neat castle and it's worth a couple of hours wandering, taking in the views, snapping some photos. The entrance area had a few guys selling trinkets/souvenirs and there was a guy looking to sell guide services. Based on the size and scope of this castle unless you're a history fanatic that is interested in all of the details you don't need a guide. A cool castle perched on one of the many hills of Lisbon with commanding views of the entire city, the Tagus, and the towns across the river. We opted to take Tram 28, hop off at the Portas do Sol stop (the closest to the castle), and make the short, albeit steep walk up the hill to the ticket kiosk near the entrance gate. Once within the grounds, we had a great time exploring all of the nooks and crannies, watching the peacocks preen, and taking far too many photos. A word of warning: The castle itself is not for those prone to acrophobia or vertigo. The stone stairs are tall and uneven with a creepily low railing as well as an ominous sign that warns of death by falling over the side! read more
