We skinned up to around 9400ft and then transitioned to ski down. Daniel went out of his way to care for our safety, learning, and experience on the mountain. You could also tell he cared a lot about the mountain, town, and the outdoors in general. If you're getting into backcountry skiing, I highly recommend a day tour with SMG on Shasta!

Now I understand that in mountaineering weather plays a deciding role in if a summit is reached or not, but it seems to me like reaching the summit is NOT a priority at ALL. I mean ZERO priority. On this second trip, I was also told by one of the guides that my "footwork" was not good enough (whatever that means), so I was forbidden to head up towards the red banks. Meanwhile, I was in lockstep with the rest of my crew, and was not complaining, for a major blister I had on my heal. After having spent $3,000+ for the guides, (not to mention all other associated costs) they served ramen noodles with frozen meatballs in a cup. (Not a plate, meaning portions were tiny). Personally, I find their guidance underwhelming, and for someone to decide whether or not I can climb is preposterous. I do not recommend this company.

McCloud Falls should have its own Yelp page listing because this is like posting about Niagara…read moreFalls in a Niagara River page. McCloud and Burney Falls (an hour away) make the best one-two punch for waterfalls outside Yosemite. However, unlike Burney Falls, McCloud Falls has lots of free parking and no entrance fee because it is not a state park. Upper Falls is the least dramatic. An ADA-accessible trail leads to an observation deck about 90 feet above the falls. The fact that people were waiting efficiently in a line to take a photo was more exciting for me than the falls itself. Plus, it is a bit strange looking down on waterfalls. Stupid waterfalls. Anyhow, of the three locations Upper Falls offers a quieter environment, ideal for relaxation and reflection, especially if the water is still. Lower Falls was the most chaotic, with two lanes of parking lot traffic on a one-way road, and more kids sprawling the river for swimming. The area, stocked with trout, seemed the more picnic and day trippy of the falls, the best place to eat your lunch. Middle Falls is the money shot. The postcard. The one that has people posing for hours for the 'Gram. This is because it's 50 feet high and over 100 feet wide, creating a curtain of water over a basalt cliff into a pool below. McCloud Falls deserves its own Yelp page--lumping it in with a generic "McCloud River" listing is like posting Niagara Falls under the Niagara River. Come on now. Together, McCloud Falls and Burney Falls (just an hour apart) make the best one-two punch for waterfall chasers outside of Yosemite. But unlike Burney Falls, located in a state park that charges an entrance fee, McCloud Falls offers something rare and beautiful: lots of free parking and zero entrance fees. My favorite kind of waterfalls are free. Upper Falls is the least dramatic of the trio. A well-maintained ADA-accessible trail leads to an observation deck perched about 90 feet above the falls. Ironically, the orderly line of people waiting to snap a photo was more thrilling than the waterfall itself. Also, there's something a little odd about looking down on a waterfall. Stupid waterfalls. That said, Upper Falls is the most peaceful and serene, making it perfect for quiet moments of reflection--especially when the water is still. Lower Falls is the more chaotic of the trio, with two lanes of traffic trying to share a narrow one-way road, while kids are sprawled across the banks of a rushing, whitewater river. The area, stocked with trout, feels tailor-made for picnics and day trips--the kind of place where sandwiches taste better for no logical reason. Middle Falls is the showstopper. The money shot. The backdrop of annoying Instagram photo sessions. At 50 feet high and over 100 feet wide, it sends a dramatic curtain of water spilling over a basalt cliff into a pool below, with summer crowds climbing the shoreline boulders and wading into the 42 degree water just to ruin your pictures. I had to edit out so many people, they should call them McPhotoshop Falls.

One day we will try it. From the east bay, it's about 300 miles north, if we want to see the falls and the lake shasta caverns, we need to sleep over one night because it'd take 5-6 hr to drive. When we get to the McCloud River, there are actual roads to drive to 3 Falls, Lower, Middle and Upper Falls. Each from the parking lot only take a few minutes hike to see the Falls, although we didn't go to the bottom of the upper falls, but we could see some. The lower falls where many people swim, or like us, sit on the rocks to feel the water gushing through rocks very nice. The middle falls, we didn't really hike to the bottom of the falls but stayed where we could see the clear views of the falls. Where people also play with the water. Next time when we visit Burney Falls, we will hike to the bottom of all these falls. Love these falls, love California.

I'd love to catch it at sunrise but alas, I'm heading south this afternoon and can't stay to get closer to Mount Shasta. Most of the surrounding area is very flat and then all of a sudden your attention is fully grabbed by is presence. An unplanned stop and slight detour isn't a hard decision to make. I pull over and stop. Open the trunk and pull out a little bottle of apple cider I packed for the trip to Seattle. I sip the near burning hot cider and it reminds me of the holidays - the only time I would have such a beverage. Apparently my Black Opel paint made the back trunk into an oven of sorts. I gaze at what appears to be a snow capped mountain volcano. It takes a moment to realize the altitude difference of the top of the mountain and where I'm standing - apparently 14,162 feet. I take a small hike or nature walk. I pick up some rocks that had a huge volume and very little weight. Apparently lava that dried up when it was near the surface and under no pressure. I think most of the time in life some of the most enjoyable moments and events are unplanned. Maybe schedules and windows of time and reservations are overrated.

The guys were naturally patient, so kind and encouraging with ALL the kids-they naturally treated all the kids with grace and encouraged them all to do the obstacles, and offered helping hands when needed, like a boost up for ropes out of reach. Highly recommend and grateful for such a great business in town.

They have a gift shop that sells softserve icecream so we grabbed one of those and talked to the store clerk who also runs the marina where he explained the boating and kayaking options, fishing, etc. Afterwards we hiked the paved path down to the falls. The path has an incline and is wet in some areas so exercise caution as we saw someone fall and bust her knee open. The falls are so beautiful from every angle, and very worth the trip! After taking a ton of photos we walked on another path that took us to a cool bridge crossing the river. Then headed over to the marina area and rented a kayak for 4 hours for $85, which is great price honestly. The guy at the boat rental area was very nice and accomodating. The sun was out in full force so take your sunscreen! We fished and caught a few small mouth bass but nothing we could keep. After we turned in our kayaks we found a picnic area and grilled up some food. Overall we really enjoyed our day at this park and highly recommend!!

Two areas for older kids on the left and middle sections, and another section on the right for smaller kids. They have a dodgeball area as well as a rock climbing wall The prices are reasonable, especially when you have younger kids shorter than 42". It only cost $7-$8 per kids. They also have an arcade area in the main lobby. Not a ton of games but enough to keep a kid busy for 30-45 minutes? A few of my negative experiences: 1. it's a smaller trampoline park and in a place like Redding, when it rains for example, the place is PACKED. 2. Even though they had a "little kid" section, there was no regulation. There were tons of older kids running around the toddler area, knocking over our toddler and baby. 3. the yelp hours, their website hours and their actual hours are not the same which is super frustrating. Then around 2:30pm someone finally answered and confirmed they opened at 11am that morning... Which sucked because by the time we got their after 3:30 the place was slammed and our kids were overran by older kids. Over all I'd give it a 3 stars. I would've given it to 4 Star, but I hated that it was so crowded. I also hated that i tried calling for over 3 hours and no one answered the phone DM me and I'll show you the call log. From the beginning, Landon was dismissive and unhelpful. When I had a simple question about check-in and wristbands, he gave short, sarcastic answers and made it clear he didn't want to be bothered. I tried to clarify, thinking maybe he misunderstood--but instead of helping, he doubled down with a rude tone and eye rolls. It felt like I was an inconvenience for even asking. Look, I get that customer service isn't always easy. But basic respect shouldn't be optional. I wasn't confrontational--I was just a paying customer trying to get information so our group could enjoy the park. Landon's attitude was not just unprofessional, it was downright disrespectful. The rest of the park was fine--kids had a great time jumping--but that one interaction left a bad taste. I'm sharing this in hopes that management sees it and addresses it, because no family should feel embarrassed or dismissed when they're just trying to make memories. Do better.
