The Department of Fish and Game provided free rental poles, bait (worms and power bait), a link to hold the fish, then bagged and iced the fish to go when guests were done. The was a 3 fish limit per child and the ponds were so stocked the kids caught their limit within an hour. Growing up in a family that loves to fish, I appreciated this event as it gave the kids the opporunity to really learn how to fish on their own and they didn't have to wait too long before catching their first fish. Also, there were plenty of volunteers available to help bring fish in with nets and remove hooks that were tough to remove. The rules are clear, fishing is for the kids, no catch and release, you must take what you catch and there is a 3 fish limit. We saw fish of all sizes caught and were happy with what we got. The Mount Shasta Hatchery is also a great place for kids to learn about the fish life cycle, see them at different stages of life and feed the fish. Next time we visit, we hope to check out the museum. One thing to note is it is a very far walk in from the entrance to the ponds so get their early or be prepared to walk really far.

If you look closely, you can see scars and injuries the trout have from living together in such close proximity. Their constant fighting over food only leaves the strong, seasoned warriors making it all the way to adulthood (huge sizes). There is a public restroom by the parking lot. They also have a covered building where you can see the very small babies.

My cousin and I found the honey hole on the Sacramento Point that Bob told us about. We slayed them just like he told us we would. Trolling for trout has never been so much fun for me or my cousin. We know how to use our down riggers. We know how to set up the lines. We didn't know where the fish were. That was until we met Bob Telles of The Reel Thing. I came across The Reel Thing July 27, 2016. My cousin and I had just pulled the boat up into the shade so we could start prepping it for the week ahead of fishing. Shortly after we began our setup a gentleman came down the hill in a golf cart. He circled around the boat and asked, "Are you guys going to be here long?" We replied with a friendly no. The next thing you know this gentleman introduced himself as Bob and began telling us about the fish. Bob gave my cousin and I so much detailed information our brains almost exploded. Bob then let it be known he is a guide on Shasta and has many years on Shasta and other lakes. Bob's friendly demeanor and willingness to provide so much information to non paying people was so amazing. He was not trying to sell us a guided trip. He didn't tell us to get off his lake. He told us that he loves giving out the information because it is what he loves to do. Put people on the fish! Bob Telles put us on the fish alright. So if you want to avoid slathering sunscreen on, the best bet is lightweight, light colored clothes that have some kind of built in SPF. Our fishing guide, who deserves his own non-5 star review (unless you count amount of marijuana smoked while supposedly working), recommended this place as I was suffering a bit from heat. From the outside, the shop doesn't look like much, but inside - wow. This small and neat shopped is like a fly fishing paradise. As I'm not a fly fisher and also not really knowledgeable about fishing, it was overwhelming. But cool to look around and see all the crazy things people use. Anyway, they had the sun shirt that I was looking for, and I found a nice hat. So overall, cool spot to visit, and great if you're into fly fishing. Parking is easy and they take credit cards too.
