This inn is located in a super convenient spot near a lot of popular SF spots. The worker was nice, our room was clean, and we didn't have to worry about parking. I would recommend if you come, to try and get a room in one of the higher levels. We could hear the people above us walking and dropping stuff throughout the night, but it makes sense considering this is clearly an older spot. read more

We ended up booking a last minute stay because our other plans fell through and we were delightfully surprised! I'm glad we trusted in the yelp reviews. Got a great price on this place compared to other places. The location is amazing. It's right in the middle of tons of restaurants and everything is either walking distance or a couple min drive away. Walgreens is right across the street and sufficed for items we didn't bring. The room was especially clean despite the rusty toilet paper holder that needs to be replaced. Plenty of plugs for charging needs. A separate freezer to the mini fridge and it works super well. Free PARKING was phenomenal. No need to fight for a parking space. One Parking spot reserved per reservation. Never thought I would appreciate parking so much until I stayed at a different place nearby and couldn't find parking for an hour! I felt safe here. It was so convenient that I stayed a couple more times after. Of note, is that you can book online but can't use credit card that you booked with. Our 'go to' for a staycation in San Francisco! While it doesn't look like much from the street the rooms are spacious, comfortable beds, very clean with large TVs, and best of all FREE PARKING in their lots! We love walking through the Broadway tunnel and visiting Chinatown or also visiting House Of Prime Rib that is blocks away. Lots of great bars in a matter of blocks will mean your nights aren't boring! We cannot recommend this place enough. Overall it was a nice place to stay. The room was clean, the staff we interacted with was very nice. The biggest issue was the carpet was old and had holes in it. Really good accommodations for the price. I arrived a couple of hours early but was allowed to check in and parking was free and felt pretty secure. Upon check in I was given a map printout with helpful advice and I'd say it was a very warm welcome. My room had so much great light and a good view. After checking in we walked to Chinatown and Little Italy, and then Fisherman's Wharf before coming back up Polk Street. It was a challenging walk up and down hills for someone who is sedentary for work day in and out. read more

Free parking and security cameras all over the property so I felt safe staying here. The older man and the woman who work in the office were both very kind any time I spoke to them and very polite. Check in was super easy and no-fuss. It's an older building with no real frills but my room was spacious and very clean and they obviously tried to make it cozy. I had noise-cancelling earphones so the street noise didn't bother me much but if you're a light sleeper you may want earplugs just for traffic noise since it's in a busier area. My only recommendation would be that they fix or restock their vending machines - their drink machine was broken altogether and snacks were totally empty except for one bag of Gardettos! But there's plenty of stuff within walking distance and the rooms come with mini fridge, coffee pot and microwave so you can make food in your room or keep drinks! read more

We have limited experience with SF hotels but were pleasantly surprised by our stay at Castle Inn. Its in a convenient & safe location, with nice renovated rooms and free on site parking, all for under $100! What more can u ask for? Located in Russian Hill district, around the Van Ness Broadway intersect, we didn't encounter any wondering souls. Out car was safely tucked away inside the hotel courtyard parking. Check in was quick, Damon was a no none-sense fellow. The old fashion elevator reminded me of the God-Father era lifts, took us a while just to figure out how to open it. We were given the 2-queen size room. Other than the 2 beds, the living space was dominated by the long working/eating counter top desk. Bathroom was quite nice, everything was well laid out and easy for the eyes. There was space for a closet, a microwave and a fridge with separate freezer & non-freezer sections! I have never seen that in any hotels. The toilet & shower/tub were in a separate area. The tub was small, the shower head was prob about 5'8" tall. Water was piping hot & pressure was good, we had difficulties wrestling with the shower knob that controlled the temp & pressure. I felt like a P-38 pilot suddenly being placed behind the controls of a lumbering B-24. To our amazement there was a functioning AC system, the humming can be a nuisance esp if your bed is right next to it, so bring ear plugs. Beds were comfy enough, mattresses were of medium firmness. There was nothing fancy about the pillows, they were not exactly plush but adequate. Outside lights were sufficiently blacked out by dual curtains. Please note 1 of those 2 curtains are made of see through fabric! If you are not sure which is which, just pull both curtains down to ensure complete privacy. We had some issues with the TV, but Damon promptly came to our room and solved the problem. Nearby there's Lombard St, House of Prime Ribs and Ruth's Chris. Two blocks down on Polk there are Philz, Peet's and SBUX all next to each other. There were ongoing construction outside the hotel on Broadway, our room was facing the interior courtyard so we barely noticed. We felt safe inside and around the hotel area. Overall it was a very pleasant stay at Castle Inn. Safe and great location, free parking and a great price. We will be back read more

We had a late check in (10:35pm) and found out when we arrived that we had booked for the wrong date. The Castle Inn had no vacancies left, but the front desk clerk provided us with information on where we may be able to get alternate accommodations. While we were sitting in our car in front of the Castle Inn, trying find another motel online, Castle Inn Manager Damon Smith came out and found us. He advised us that he had a no show (no check in after 11pm) and that he would let us have the room. He provided us with a discount rate for the room and told us he would assist us with getting a refund the following morning for the wrong date we had booked on Hotels.com. The room at Castle Inn was clean and comfortable. The motel also has free complimentary parking on their property. When I contacted Hotels.com the next day, they in turn contacted Damon who approved a full refund for the mistaken date we had booked. I would absolutely recommend the Castle Inn based on our experience with their accommodations and staff. A big thank you to Manager Damon Smith for his help and excellent customer service. read more

For a 2 star motel, this Castle Inn is a fantastic value stay... IF... you can handle sleeping on soft beds with a thin blanket. I need to sleep on a firm bed or else I cannot sleep at all. Well that was the case. Otherwise, Castle Inn gets 5 stars for hot, strong shower, strong WI-FI connection, clean room and linens, great location (near Chinatown, Golden Gate, UCSF Medical Center), FREE parking, black out curtains, and efficient check-in process. Admit it, you haven't stayed at a motel in decades.....I know I hadn't. There is something seedy about them portrayed in the movies and popular shows. Everytime someone gets in trouble on the show "Cops", if it's not out in the streets it is happening at a motel. So going into our reservation, even after word-of-mouth recommendations from family, I was a bit skeptical to stay here for multiple nights in SanFran. But after our recent stay, I actually have a newfound love for motels again, not since the early 90's when my family would go to Orlando on vacations have I felt such a cool nostalgia factor for a place such as this. We took the elevator up to the top each time but the outside stairs down were fairly easy. It was actually five floors in total, including the basement garage and first floor office. The room was very nicely updated, had a fridge/microwave and the bed was more comfortable than I had anticipated. The AC in the wall worked very well and was needed as it got above 75 degrees most days we were there. The staff/owners were super welcoming, happy to show us a map of the area, where to visit and what to stay away from. They held our bags at the office when we needed to check out but still wanted to explore before leaving. The breakfast offered was ample and good, another added perk vs. other places that are going to charge you for similar items. The value for SF is tremendous and the biggest draw here. We upgraded to a 4-star hotel on our last night that felt cold and unwelcoming at times, this was anything but. I HIGHLY recommend this place and dare you to find a better value for the area. There are a lot of older motels like this around SF and maybe some are comparable but those I saw were more towards the Golden Gate Bridge, not minutes from Lombard St. and a quick walk to Chinatown or the Piers. I also wouldn't trust any of the reviews that are more than two years old because it has gone through major renovations since then. Anyone complaining about it looking "old" or "smelly" are probably just that, old reviews. read more

Castle Inn is good place to stay in if you are looking for an affordable and most of all safe place to stay. We stayed for 8 nights. The neighborhood you're in is where mostly locals are and there are lots of stores nearby like Walgreens, Starbucks and restaurants. My 2 teens felt comfortable and the buses are near on all corners to go either the Fisherman's Wharf and the Union Square and even outside the City. Castle Inn is in a better part of Broadway cause my relatives thought we were in a bad area. The room we were in, is a clean 2 Queen Beds and it was spacious that fitted our 1 luggage, 4 carry ons and 4 personal items. There's a good working tv, coffee maker, a small fridge, microwave, iron and a hair dryer. Everything you need in a room and best of all, free parking. Just be mindful with the type of vehicle you rent due to small spaces. Lucky thing that our room was in the 1st floor too because I'm not sure if the elevator was working or we just didn't know how to work it. Better to book direct as well because it's more affordable. Overall, my family, 100% recommends Castle Inn and we will definitely go there again when we do visit SF. read more

PARKING: oh...my...narrowness... It's your typical San Francisco parking situation- tiny spots made for tiny cars. Definitely not SUV friendly. There's the office level parking lot and the basement. CHECK IN: VERSA WAS FANTASTIC AND SUPER FRIENDLY/helpful too. A city guide booklet/things to do around town list was handed to us. NOT TO MENTION- the free basic morning goodies that are offered. Included: coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice, apples, oranges, granola bars, yogurt, two different kinds of instant oatmeal, pastries. ROOM: standard, two queen bed room. It had a 90's (bed comforters, chairs, carpet) /modern decor (updated bathroom, head boards) fusion thing going on. Beds were comfortable too.
