This is probably my favorite place to stay as it may be somewhat older (classic old school - rooms with washstand but toilets and shower/bath in the hall) but it right in the middle of Hayes Valley and everything is right there and there are good restaurants, coffee shops, great ice cream places, a nice park to sit by and read and of course a beer garden by the park that opens in the afternoon. You can also easily walk or do mass transit to other places - I did a walk up to the Painted Ladies and then hung out a bit in the lower Haight and then easily walked back down to this area. The establishment also has a kitchen area so you can go pick up sundry and supplies at the local Trader Joe's (just 2 or 3 blocks away) if you want to limit how much you spend eating out (something I plan to do next time) and the kitchen has free tea and instant coffee so the basics if you want to ease into your day. If you want the full "bathroom in my room" sort of thing there are other places but this is my 2nd time here and it is still great - there are stairs and no elevator so keep that in mind but the price versus location is wonderful - if noise bothers you, then bring ear plugs for the weekend - not super loud but if you are not used to noise, it might keep you up a bit - but I've found it to be a super safe area - you can catch the Bart most of the way (to the civic center) and then you catch the 21 3 stops to this location. Do note, you don't have someone on staff there but available by text and you use a key app, that they notify the day you are checking in - which I think works well - it is nice to have an affordable way to get out of the heat in Phoenix, especially in the summer, and I'm not looking for a resort experience but a place to lay my head and keep my stuff while I go enjoy the sights and sounds, and amazing food and drink, of the local area. read more

I had been staying at Hayes Valley Inn since 2018 after I moved away from SF. It was a cute B&B overlooking Gough & Hayes. COVID completely ruined this place and it seems like they're under new management because they have been completely unaccommodating. I booked under non-refundable and needed to change my dates of stay. When I rebooked, they charged me way more than the advertised price when I checked that same hour. When I asked about this price discrepancy, they just replied with "the prices change everyday". It's not even worth staying here anymore. The bathrooms aren't kept up as well, there's no front desk, and no breakfast spread. $535 for 3 nights vs the 410 that it was listed for? They're trying to take advantage of the fact that I booked non-refundable! I've been trying to get in contact with management and all I'm told is that management doesn't work at hours so I'd be unable to call the line. "Email them" is what I was told to do. It seems like they don't email back either. The Inn holds a lot of special memories for me but I will never go back. read more

In a great location, clean, and easy to access. The front door uses a passcode, and you'll need an app to unlock your room. There have been a few times when the app didn't work, but the concierge was very helpful in getting us in quickly. Absolutely horrible experience--please note that staying here comes with hidden costs! I was looking forward to staying here because of the location and cheap price; $80/night in SF over the weekend is definitely a hard find. However, from the very beginning to end ranged from confusion, annoyance, to plain nightmare. The check in process was confusing and and cumbersome. I was given no check in information, and there was no front desk. The intercom at the front door did not even work, and I had to call their actual "front desk" who apparently said they did not have my information on file and made me go through these annoying steps just to find my hotel room key in a lock box. The most frustrating and nightmarish experience came the next day when I lost the hotel room key (a physical key). I called the "front desk" several times but received no answer then finally got one after about 10 minutes. When I told the man at the "front desk," he told that he would have to speak to the housekeeper. After waiting for another 10 minutes, he informed me that I would be getting fined $200 for the lost room key, which is plain ridiculous, since they didn't have a replacement key (other than the housekeeper's key). I understand a $25 or $50 fee for a lost key but $200 for a freaking key???! After waiting for about 40 minutes total, he finally walked over with my replacement key and begged me not to lose it since that would mean the housekeeper can't even get in (how laughable). What's worse was that the other guests were able to use their phone or a passcode to get in since all the room had e-locks. When I asked the man at the "front desk" why I needed a physical key, he said that not all of the e-locks were working--including the one for my room. What a load BS. A horribly dingy hotel that can't even get its most basic sh*t together. Stay at this incompetently run hotel at your own risk or better yet find much better options. read more

I stayed here years ago BEFORE the pandemic when I brought my daughter to college in SF. Then it was lovely with an amazing breakfast and tea time. All items were working and it was cozy. This trip was the complete opposite of that experience. They no longer have a breakfast or tea time. The community kitchen had no working coffee pot or hot water maker for tea. The dish washer was broken and the fridge was absolutely filthy and filled with the housekeeping staffs food and condiments. The first room I was assigned had a bed that was as hard as a rock. I was there for 5 days and absolutely could not sleep on it. I called and requested a room change and the next room had a bed that was better. The rest of the trip went well until upon packing for my return home I realized that my iPad was missing. I had not used it since the night I arrived and had placed in in my travel bag that I didn't need to go into until I was ready to depart. As soon as I realized it was missing I called to report it.. this was September 24th. I have tried following up several times to never receive a call back from Linda the general manager. I was told by the agent who took my report there would be an investigation and a claim filed with their insurance for my stolen property and I have not heard a word from anyone. Even when I had to make a 3rd follow up call I was rudely questioned as to why I took so long to call back! Like it is my job to track down somone to to help me when I have been wronged. Absolutely unacceptable and unprofessional. No one gave a damn that my personal belongings were searched and my property stolen. It's now October 10th and I have yet to hear back, This place is horrible as a business and not safe for your personal property. There are no safes in the room so nothing is safe to be left there!!!! I will be leaving reviews one every platform there is to warn others to not stay here because LINDA AND HAYES VALLEY INN DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOU JUST YOUR MONEY AND WHAT THEIR STAFF CAN FREELY STEAL!!!! read more

My partner and I love the Hayes Valley Inn, and have been here many times for a Bay Area staycation. The location is great, near fun shops, coffee, and stores, plus some weekends there's a Hayes Valley Street Fair with local artisans right around the corner. There's also decent parking about a block away at a public garage. That said, you have to be up for what the place offers. Bath and shower are shared in the hall, but due to an excellent cleaning staff, the bathrooms have always been very clean, in my experience. Yes it's a very "hands-off" place with no contact with proprietors or staff except the very nice housekeepers. Your key is electronic. If you're looking for a "full service" hotel, this is not it. But if you're looking for everything better hotels have (cool neighborhood, good walk score, restaurant right downstairs) with access to a large kitchen, this is a solid choice. read more

Dennis also recommended restaurant around the area where we can have lunch while we are waiting for our room (we arrive around 9 am, check in time is 3pm). The room were very clean and nice, the breakfast is excellent every morning, We feel that we are a FAMILY, NOT a hotel guest. We will definitely return!! Affordable and smack dab in the middle of stores and restaurants. Price and location can't be beat. This is a definitely a great little gem. If you're not okay with a communal bathroom, this is not the place for you, but if you are, keep reading! I've stayed a a few hotels that have communal bathrooms but out of all of them this one has to be my favorite because they're private communal bathrooms, so you won't have to share one big room with showers and toilets, they're all in individual rooms. Now enough about showers and toilets, let's move on to the Inn itself. The gentleman that checked us in was extremely helpful and knowledgeable with the area, he even pointed out which bus routes to take to explore the city, no matter what direction you want to head in, everything is a 15/20 minute bus ride away, including Fisherman's Wharf. Although our check in time wasn't for a few more hours and our room wasn't ready yet, he allowed us to keep our luggage in the office until that time so that we could venture off. The room itself was quite cozy and had a built in sink, that really came in handy in the mornings when trying to get ready. They provide a hard key for your room door and front door of the inn which remains locked at night. The Inn does have a continental breakfast that offers the basics and a lovely dining area, if you can, sit by the window and people watch. If you want to opt out and get a hearty breakfast, there are plenty of restaurants within a 5 minute walking distance. On the plus side, they also offer afternoon tea and cookies! read more

I would highly recommend doing some more research into what you are paying for. It was not mentioned that this was a European style stay, and that it is the most cramped and claustrophobic feeling a hotel can give you. We were given a lovely view of the water pipes in the back of the building, and a room with stains on the floor, tiny television (was dangerous near the size of a computer screen, and a lively sink next to the bed with stains on the sheets. Shared appliances all out of order, all bathrooms always in use, and that was all only for the ten minutes we were there. Sadly we had to leave immediately because of an emergency, otherwise I might have warmed up to it. Still haven't gotten my refund for somewhere I didn't even get to stay. This hotel is conveniently located, I'll give it that. The rooms are very small, it is situated above a very busy series of bars and restaurants. There are 2 water closets per floor and one shower per floor. The rooms are equipped with sinks but the water closets are not and you need use your phone to unlock your room door so you have to have your phone with you every time you shower or use the toilet but you can't wash your hands until you get back to your room. The only staff around are the housekeeping, no front desk staff, and the acoustic barrier between the rooms and the hallway is terrible so you can hear everything going on the hall as well as everything going on in other rooms. If I could give this location anymore stars, I would. The location is fantastic, right in the middle of a lot of action and very close to bus stops. The rooms are small but have everything one needs for a weekend stay and smell really clean. I would say the shared restrooms and showers isn't exactly what I would go for but the kitchen area and morning breakfast make up for it! If you're looking for something bougie and hotel like, this isn't for you. This is a quaint bed and breakfast with quirks and a lot of charm. Great affordable choice on a flat SF street. Love the location as it is close to a bunch of restaurants and bars. Did I mention it's on a flat street. If you are visiting SF you will quickly learn there are steep hills everywhere. I booked a queen size bed room with a sink. It was only an additional 7$ a night in comparison to a full size bed. The sharing of toilets and bathrooms is a bit inconvenient but honestly did not bother me. Never had to really wait for a shower or to use the toilet. If you are out of shape do not book the room on the 3rd floor because it will be 4 levels of steps just as a warning. But hey was great exercise. The overall room was basic but clean so no complaints. Room was cleaned every night. Also as a bonus you have free breakfast; who's his awesome since this city is expensive with food. Breakfast is basic but better then the usual continental breakfast offered for free at hotels. Every morning I had a nice cup of joe with a chocolate banana muffin piece. Overall a good decent priced hotel right in the center of SF. As long as you are good with sharing bathrooms and the absolute hover things aren't a must this is perfect for you! read more

We stayed overnight last Thursday night, and went to a jazz concert at the Veteran's War Memorial a couple of blocks away. It was inexpensive and very, very quiet. I never heard anyone else in the hall at all, and it was pleasantly private and quiet. The room and the bathrooms were clean, and the bed was very comfortable. There was a parking lot next door for patrons to use at a discount, but I'm pretty good at finding free parking in the alleys, so we didn't have to pay anything for parking. It's a great location to walk to almost anywhere in the Civic Center/Yerba Buena area, and we had a great time. The rooms are really small, though, but that really wasn't a problem, since the price was good and the service was good. And I loved the neighborhood and all the great eating places and the little pocket park just a block to the southwest. read more

Younger lady that checked me in was not only friendly and interactive, but I couldn't even see a mobile phone within her reach. A rare treat this place is, and in an amazing neighborhood full of food options. I wanted to stay another night just to try more restaurants. I've stayed here twice, the first time when they had different owners and guests were allowed to bring dogs! The rooms were sparse and having bathrooms down the hall was not that much of a problem, though it's not my preference. Being one of the few dog-friendly small hotels at the time, it was such a great option. New owners have changed the rules, but the essence of the hotel remains the same. Friendly staff, nice location, a nice change of pace for people who don't want to stay in chain hotels. The mix of guests here are interesting - from senior citizens to backpackers and every one in between, all of whom mingled and were easy to meet and chat with. read more

I must say it was my first time trying "sharing/communal bathrooms" it was not too bad although I waited quite a while before I was able to get into the shower in the morning but other than that our room was spacious and included a sink..we had a good stay here it's definitely an old hidden gem totally affordable in San Fran. This is a wonderful hotel with a super friendly staff. The same man and woman have been alternating manning the front desk for years and are very efficient and attentive. The bathrooms are down the hall ( European style)----but don't let it put you off. They're spotless and we rarely have to wait. Perfect location in the epicenter of Hayes valley and very reasonably priced. No elevator or bellhops, but if your healthy, carrying your bags upstairs shouldn't be a problem. read more

We stayed at this hotel on a recent trip to the city prior to Memorial Day weekend. I was initially hesitant because of the shared restroom facilities, but when we arrived OMG I was in love. We stayed in room #302. The room had a great view of all of the happenings on the street below, and was surrounded by a plethora of places to eat, drink and shop. The room wasn't super small as other Yelpers have stated and for it to be such a busy weekend, we didn't hear ANY noise. We only saw another couple on our floor the day we checked out. The restroom and bathing facilities were kept clean and fresh and never once did we have to wait to use either. Each and everyone on the staff, from the manager to the housekeepers were pleasant and extremely helpful. The breakfast was nice...it's not going to fill you, so keep that in mind, and it was so awesome laughing with the other guests. My tip would be to take advantage of the 10% discount at check in and rent some bikes around the corner near Patricias Green Park, and see this amazing city! They'll even give you the keys to the bike locker if you need. One thing for sure. . we'll definitely be back really soon, it's like that when you've fallen in love with such beauty. read more

Spent a Friday night in the Turret room on the second floor. The bed was comfy, the room is a bit snug, and there is a sink built right into the room with a vanity mirror. The bathroom and shower are located on the middle of each floor (my first experience in shared amenities a la B&B style). The building has a quaint antique feel to it. The turret rooms are located at the end of each floor, so you we got quite a bit of street noise, but that's what you get for having a pretty nice view of the streets. They had bath robes which I really appreciated (two kinds at that, one for warmth and the other made of terry cloth for the shower). The staff were very genuinely nice and very helpful with helping us find parking (which is probably the worst part about this place, but hey... most of San Francisco is like that with parking, especially in this high traffic area). They were also really nice at recommending eateries. Just next door, we had awesome French cuisine and onion soup at Chez Maman. The complimentary breakfast was very nice. The kitchen and dining rooms are available to guests after hours as well. We had champagne to celebrate and we were told we could walk right in and have glasses (because who wants champagne out of plastic cups?) Overall solid experience. It was everything I expected based on reviews I read prior to booking. I would love to visit again. read more

We have stayed at the quirky HVI several times and have been very happy with each visit. Located in the Hayes Valley district (surprise!), it's a short walk to many restaurants, two below the Inn, and Absinthe right across the street, plus easy access to several theaters, ACT is a six minute walk, the Orpheum eleven. Start by parking at the performing arts garage 360 Grove and walk around the corner to the hotel,ring in at the street level and walk up to the office. You might be greeted by Veronique, she is very friendly and has a great knowledge of the area. She gave us a corner room 207 great views and quite a bit of street noise. If the noise will bother you ask for an interior room, but then you won't have a view. The rooms are smallish, quaintly decorated with a closet and a sink. The WC and bath are down the hall, I've had to wait for the bath, (in my robe,in the hall), but not the WC as there are two on each floor. So remember folks five stars for what it is, an inexpensive treat in a great location, this isn't Hilton but, then again I had enough left over for a really nice dinner at Absinthe! read more

San Francisco, I love you; but you're killing my pocket-book. Even AirBnB is atrociously priced unless I want to spend the night on some college students couch in an already overly-crowded condo. Thank the Yelp gods for finding Hayes Valley Inn. Let's get down to it. Hayes Valley Inn (which I was going to abbreviate HVI but found it better not too...) is a European style hotel. A what? A European style hotel. Meaning: it's compact and you're probably going to be sharing a bathroom. Hopefully, you didn't stop reading at the shared bathroom part because in all honesty... it was NO big deal at all. I never had to wait for a restroom and it was cleaner than my own bathroom after the cleaning lady comes. Seriously. It's that awesome. Toilets, or Water Closets, are kept separate. I believe there were at least 2 on each floor and never occupied from as far as I could tell. Rooms are definitely compact. But what more do you need in a city this awesome? A comfortable bed is really all you need. There's also an included sink, closet, chest of drawers, and TV. Parking is a bit inconvenient as it's about a block away in the Performing Arts garage and it'll run you about $20ish dollars a day. So consider that when booking this Inn. Overall, I'd definitely consider staying here again. I might actually try and locate a cheaper parking garage and just Uber my way over to this location. Otherwise everything was really easy-breezy. Service was also phenomenal and friendly. They even offered to comp me my Yelp check-in discount as I was checking out. Super kind! I stayed here for a night. I was accepted after hours which was really nice. The staff was really sweet and accommodating. The room was tiny. The bed was very soft (too soft for me) and the same goes for the pillows. There is a sink in the room but there is no bathroom or shower. Those are shared with the floor. There is a shared kitchen area. It is pretty small. I had to wait to get in there to get breakfast as there was no room to sit. Breakfast options are pretty basic, expect cereal, eggos, and bagels. For the price in this area, this is very reasonable. Overall, I'd stay here again if I had to. read more

This hotel is really a gem in San Francisco! Any of the staff we came in contact with were very nice. You do have to share bathrooms, but the fact that you have a sink in your room makes it so nice! Sharing bathrooms/showers did not bother us at all. This hotel is located RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of everything. There are tons of bars and restaurants around. In fact, one each side there are restaurants (like 10 steps away). Their complimentary breakfasts are awesome! They have different kids of bagels, muffins, coffee, tea, fruits (strawberries, grapes, berries), yogurt, ham, cheese, milk, orange juice, and different kids of cereals! Loved this place. Would highly recommend it!! You will have anything you want to eat within walking distance. Nice and clean, with good sized rooms! We've stayed at other hotels in SF and they're usually SO TINY! This place is very charming and quaint. The staff is very lovely and the prices are great! Small room, but very comfy bed. I don't mind the shared shower and W.C. I didn't take advantage of the continental breakfast, though I did enjoy the coffee every morning, which was delish. And you really can't beat the location. You're close to all types of shops, restaurants, and bars, not to mention public transport, the Mission, Haight, etc. So why only 3 stars? My girlfriend and I walked up the stairs to our room, ready to throw our stuff in our room before painting the town red, when what do I see on the carpet just feet from our front door? A pile of dog shit! No joke. A pile of dog shit. I am fortunate to have a very low-key, patient girlfriend. She had a hearty laugh about it. We put our stuff in the room, then told the staff person what we saw. His reaction? Well, he was very nonchalant. He laughed about it and said that it was from the hotel (owner's) dog. He said he would clean it up and sure enough when we returned a few hours later, the carpet was clean. But he never once apologized. I mean you're running a business here, Do you want a pile of dog shit to be the first thing your customers notice? What about the health code violations? Other than that, the place is great. But they definitely lose 2 stars for the shit and laissez-faire attitude re: it. I know SF is a progressive city, but there's no excuse for that shit (pun definitely intended). read more

Let's start off with a run through of what this places offers: - shared showers and toilets (two WCs, one shower on each floor) - sink in your room - 3 floors - check in at 3pm, no early check ins - check out at 11am - shared kitchen with breakfast 7:30am to 10:30am and tea time at 4pm - no AC, yes ceiling fan (gets hot but we were barely in the room so it wasnt too much of a problem) *Advice: maybe bring flip flops and a robe... shared showers kind of reminded me of dorms haha. Little room for clothes. Bring own toiletries as well (they have a conditioner and shampoo in the bathroom but it looks like it's been sitting there for a while. Location - 5/5. My main concern was about the area I would be booking my stay. I was going for a show at Bill Graham but it seemed a lot of the places in the area were either too expensive or warned us about the homeless that may or may not harass you. I browsed airbnb for a while in search for an affordable stay but a lot of the comments again talked about the large amounts of homeless and drug addicts that hang out in that area (granted, I *was* searching near Tenderloin but I'm a SF noobie). Somehow I stumbled across Hayes Valley Inn. The area is LOVELY! It has an active nightlife and no sketchiness. It is also a 5-7 min walk to the venue and civic center, so even walking back at 1am we felt safe. I can see how east of civic center can get sketchy but west of it was fine. The inn was also walking distance within many convenient bus stops. * No comment on parking since we flew to SF and decided to use public trans. Price - 5/5! SO affordable. We paid a little less than $200 for a 2 night stay (w/ 10% Yelp check in discount). Other places in SF barely compare. This inn is also very clean and well maintained and I felt safe here. Staff - 5/5. Everyone was very friendly here. We first met Dennis who was a great help with navigating the town. He gave us a map that helped us all weekend and some bus routes to take for our trip. The girl at night (sorry forgot her name) was also very nice. Amenities - 3/5. Wifi was awfully slow and printer was buggy. But Dennis was nice enough to let me print on his computer. There is a TV in the room but we couldn't really see it unless we were standing up lol. Not much of a problem for me to remove my stars, but may be a problem if you really need wifi or a TV. Amidst the Bay Area prices, it's hard for anyone to find a place to sleep in San Francisco for less than $500 per night in the Tenderloin. Coming here on business, my assistant and I were happy to find Hayes Valley Inn. The location is AMAZING. Blue Bottle coffee is a block away and every type of cuisine imaginable is within a 3 block radius. We stayed in the cottage house, so it's behind the front door in an alley. I actually preferred this, as it has a bit more privacy. The room we had was simple but clean. The washroom is down the hall. It was quiet and the beds were comfy. For breakfast in the morning, you go into the main part of the hotel and eat in the dining room with the other guests. The food is fresh and delicious and it's nice to socialize with everyone. My one disclaimer is the wifi is painfully slow, so if you come here on business and need to use your laptop, it's almost impossible. I hope they upgrade this soon, as it was my only complaint. Parking is a nightmare. Beware the 2 parking garages down the street end their "day" at 4am, so you basically get charged double for both the day you arrive and the day you leave and there is no in and out. So if you have a vehicle, park your car and don't move it until you leave and be prepared to take out a second mortgage for your bill. I look forward to returning to Hayes Valley Inn. read more

My boyfriend and I are a young couple on our first vacation together and we needed something cheap, in a good area and fun! We found Hayes Valley Inn and we could not have been more pleased. Our flight got in late Saturday night and the second we walk up the stairs, the awesome receptionist greeted us with kindness and enthusiasm. Check in was quick and painless and all me and my boyfriend wanted to do was go see the city! We went to a few bars that the receptionist reccommened and came back late and a little tipsy I might add. So tipsy that we accidentaly locked ourselves out of our room. We called the emergency number and a man was there within 5 minutes to let us back into our room. SO NICE. The free complimentary breakfast was great, I don't understand how anyone can complain. There were bagels, english muffins, muffins, waffles, cereal, yogurt, fruit, granola, orange juice, coffee, tea, EVERYTHING. It was in the cutest little room too! Overall, we will DEFINITELY be back! The staff was overely nice, the room was great, the breakfast was yummy and the area just cannot be beat for the price. We even made a new friend out of the receptionist and we are now regulars at Hayes Valley Inn! read more

Fantastic place. Great, inexpensive room in an amazing part of the city. My wonderful boyfriend bought us tickets to Book of Mormon and we decided to stay the night. He found this place on Yelp and asked for my opinion. At first I was a bit hesitant since the decor isn't really my taste and bathrooms are shared. I must admit I'm a bit of a hotel snob, so I was extremely hesitant. However, the price convinced me to try it out - after all it was just one night. When I called to book the room, they were nothing but professional and friendly on the phone. After the initial booking, I already knew I had nothing to worry about. My first impression was just as great. The lady checking us in was just as friendly. The check in was quick and easy. They had tea and cookies for us to snack on. The room reminded me of my own room at home. Same color theme and all. It was extremely cute! The bed was comfy and the sheets/towels were clean. I was pleasantly surprised. Oh, and I never had to wait to use the shower and toilet. The toilet and shower were super clean as well. I didn't even notice we didn't have our own personal bathroom. Their breakfast offering was delicious. It's complimentary and very filling! We liked Hayes Valley Inn so much that we extended our stay to an additional night. Okay, going to SF for the weekend. Plan to spend all of my money on food and booze, time to find a cheap hotel that doesn't have bums sleeping outside of it. Hmm, I suppose my parents live near by.... nope. Eliminate everything on Market St. Avoid all hostels. There are things that can't be done with people you don't know in the room. Okay..... everything below $150/night is totally ghetto.... great. Oh? What is this? Hayes Valley Inn? Cute bed and breakfast type, free wi-fi, clean, $100/night???? Okay what's the catch? No freakin way I found a place to stay at. Okay, shared bathroom down the hall. That's it? (While we were there I didn't even see the other guests, and they definitely didn't hog up the bathrooms when I needed them, it wasn't even a problem). As for parking, we just parked on the street, went out in the morning to fill the meter and left to see the city before our time ran up. But Heidi, what if we end up staying there through the afternoon? Won't parking get kind of pricey? And to that I say, WHAT ARE YOU DOING STAYING IN? SF IS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING CITIES! GET OUT AND SEE IT! JEEZ. But if you're reallllly going to be that way, I hear there's a parking lot around the corner that flat rates $15 or something. The hotel key on a carabiner was a nice touch too for those of us out there that expect to drink a little and not want to think about where they put their room key ;) read more

At first, I thought Hayes Valley Inn was going to be great. But unfortunately, far from it for me and I won't be staying there ever again, even though it was quaint and clean. The continental breakfast is really nice, and so are the guests. But the people who run this place are unbelievable, and seem a bit crazy. On the first day, I went to take a shower and the water went from scalding hot to freezing cold. I finally gave up on my attempt to take a shower after about 10 minutes, dried off, got dressed and waited another 10 minutes while the ladies who run the place talked about dogs. Yes, dogs. You see, Spot, is very special and so are all the other dogs. They told me they've tried to fix the shower many times and suggested I go upstairs and take a shower. I did. Each morning at 7, except for Sunday, I was awoken by drilling and other very loud construction. Then on another I was trying to get down the hall to my room, and they told me I had to wait for Spot to finish eating a banana. Yes, really. The people who run this place are just too nonchalant and just don't care. It seems to be their social scene. Check out the San Remo Hotel in North Beach if you like old Victorian hotels. This one has bathrooms down the hall as well. read more

Perfect location in a neighborhood with great restaurants and bars option nearby, it's close to public transportation and also convenient to walk around. The hotel was very clean, including all the common areas and bathrooms, which is very important! The room was big and comfortable, there was a sink which was very convenient, with more space than I needed. I liked the check-in process via the app, it made everything super easy and fast. Definitely is great affordable option, I will come back! read more

Oh god not a bad thing about this place. I could write an essay but instead I'll just list a few things we loved: -Amazing, amazing service. Everyone who works here from the front desk to the women who clean the rooms are so sweet, friendly and approachable. They get to know you and are very interested in your trip. Liz was especially really cool and nice. -Super clean, cozy rooms. Our room had everything we could want - tissues, soap, sink, mirror, lots of storage, big cozy bed, a ceiling fan, towels, an old but cute TV. Hairdryers available in the lobby, which they let us keep for our whole stay. The separate bathroom and shower was spotless. The shower includes shampoo and conditioner, and the bathroom had a hand sanitizing dispenser. Lots of little gestures. -Location. Was. Everything. Best coffee, best ice cream, bars, parks, bicycle rentals, shops, multitudes of food types, a pharmacy. Lots of bus stops, one of which takes you right to Market Street/BART, or towards NOPA/Golden Gate Park. Couple blocks away from Civic Center area, Lower Haight, or even Japantown if you feel like walking. -Not extremely important to us but they had free breakfast (really good spread, too) and tea time. The coffee was delicious. -Only con was the thin walls, but that only bothered us the first night when we were adjusting to the time change and someone had their TV up a little too loud. We could hear children and hair dryers through the wall. If you're sensitive to that, you should know. We were never bothered. We loved this place and if we ever come back to San Francisco, which is more than likely, we'll always return here. read more

I'm conflicted about this place. The staff is great, I like the location, it's safe, and the rooms and building are kept in excellent shape. I had read reviews that the rooms were small and the bathroom is down the hall, and that's fine with me. But when I got to the room, I was quite surprised that it was THAT small. I mean, wow, it was the tiniest, most microscopic hotel room I've ever stayed in. If you are six feet or taller, you cannot stay in one of these rooms and expect comfort. I slept from 12:30 to 4:00am, dropped my key in the overnight slot and left. The true surprise is the bathroom. It gave new meaning to the words "water closet". I wasn't exactly sure what to do because there is no room to turn around in there. The door opens inward and brushes right up against the toilet bowl, so it was an interesting challenge to get the door closed behind me and have room to maneuver my clothing off so I can do the deed. Again, if you are 6' or taller, your legs will take up the entirety of the closet and relieving yourself will not be very relieving. So, then, is this a good hotel? Yes, probably. But is it good because it's one of the cheapest options in a city with hotel prices that are criminal? Or is it good because it's a pleasant place to stay? Probably the former. If you are under 5'5" and enjoy water closets that are smaller than your clothing closet, then this is your place. read more

What a bummer! We booked a room here through Booking.com for Jan. 16-17, but had to change our plans five days before our reservation. Hayes Valley Inn has a 48-hour cancellation policy (see here: http://hayesvalleyinn.com/booking.html), so I called them to ask them to cancel our reservation and refund the rate. The Hayes Valley Inn representative told me that she could not refund the charges because the reservation was made through Booking.com, who has a no-refund policy. Based on this explanation, it would seem that Booking.com held all the cards (and all my money!). I called Booking.com and spoke with a very helpful representative who told me she would be happy to cancel and refund our reservation so long as Hayes Valley Inn authorized the cancellation. What a relief, right? Wrong. Hayes Valley Inn told Booking.com that they could cancel my reservation, but NOT refund that reservation. Despite their ostensible 48-hour cancellation policy, Hayes Valley Inn deceptively passed the buck and gave me the runaround because it suited their bottom line. They did it to me. They'll do it to you. With so many budget hotels in San Francisco, there's no reason to deal with this kind of doublespeak. Book someplace else. Also, beware that this hotel will charge your account the day that you book, rather than after your stay (as is customary at larger establishments). read more

LOCATION: Gough and Hayes. Central enough. My boyfriend and I were able to walk everywhere- Union Square, Chinatown, bars, restaurants and Shopping centers. All were within walking distance, taking approximately 25-30 minutes. GARAGE: I love the festivities in downtown but dread the parking. The Performance parking garage is 2 mins away from the hotel, charging $20 overnight. They charge 15 dollars (cash only) beforehand as a deposit, but they accept credit/debit cards when leaving. HOTEL: reasonably priced, that's why you have to book in advance. Yelpers can check in to get 10% off. The shared bathroom was my biggest concern, but it wasn't bad at all. It was always vacant and fairly clean. And if you don't mind the street noise, then you won't have a problem with this place. I find it soothing and slept like a baby. When I travel, I'm rarely ever in the hotel wasting my time, and I just need a place to crash after a long day. They serve breakfast and snacks. Friendly staff. I think checking in time is at 3pm and checking out time is before or at 11am. There's no AC, but there is a ceiling fan and you can open the windows. We were here during spring so it wasn't too bad. Not so sure about the summer though. For those of you who are planning to get wasted, plastered drunk and planning to come back to the hotel at 3 in the morning, do keep in mind that there's no elevator. Stumbling up the stairs and waking everyone up (thin walls) will probably get you scolded in the morning. read more
