I hired Castleguard for two projects at my 10 year old home. The first went very well. The second did not. In April of 2017, I hired Matt , the owner of the business to repair the white vinyl fence in my backyard. The fence needed to be stabilized to prevent panels from falling during storms and heavy winds. We also needed some touch up paining on the outdoor light fixtures. Matt came to discuss the work, and gave me a very reasonable estimate for fixing the fence and the painting. We set a date. He arrived on time, he was very professional throughout the job and did a good job. To date, we have not had any issues with these repairs. Based on that experience, I contacted him again in October 2017 for another project. On the inside, we had some small holes in the wall that occurred when two curtain rods fell that needed to be drywalled and painted, a small portion of the moulding along the wood flooring in our home that had not been originally installed correctly- it needed to be lowered and caulked into the correct position. We also asked that a cork board be hung in our office. On the outside, we wanted to fill in a few areas in the brick where mortar was wearing away. There were also two small gaps between the front and back patios and the house that needed to be sealed. I asked Matt to come over and take a look at these repairs. He did not come over but stated that these were small repairs for which he charged an hourly rate. I agreed to the rate and we set a date for November 1st. On November 1st, he sent an employee to do the above referenced work. The employee advised that he had extensive experience in construction and handyman services. According to him, he had worked on numerous projects for builders and real estate agents in the Charlotte area and had many years of construction work in other states. He completed the inside repairs satisfactorily. However, he took frequent breaks, an 11/2 hour lunch, worked very slowly and inefficiently. In my opinion, he was attempting to run up the clock. For the outdoor work, he used elastic caulk to fill in between the bricks instead of mortar. He also used caulk to fill in the gaps on the patio. The work was done sloppily and looked terrible. At the end of the job when he advised he was clocking out around 8 hours, I got angry and contacted Matt. There was no way this job should have taken that long, had he worked steadily. Also, I do not believe breaks should be included when you are paying an hourly rate for work. Matt advised that he had had a similar complaint about his work from a previous client and would adjust the billing. I was not happy with the outdoor repairs. I emailed Matt, sent pics of the work and he agreed the outdoor work needed to be redone. He was not able to schedule another visit until December 1st. I asked if the weather would affect this repair, and he advised that it would not. A second employee was sent out to fix the previous outdoor repairs. He supposedly had extensive masonry experience. The caulk used to fill in the bricks was the wrong product. The second repairman mixed and applied mortar to those areas. He also removed the caulking in the gaps on the patio and replaced that with mortar. He advised the mortar would better protect the area from the elements. Not being sophisticated in masonry or construction matters, I followed that advice. He put a thick layer of mortar in the gap areas. It appeared to have dried properly and seemed fine until TWO MONTHS later, on February 7th, when I noticed that a large section of the mortar placed in the gap on the back patio had separated from the house. My dog was pawing at the broken pieces in that area. The mortar used to seal the gaps did not withstand the elements and was completely brittle. After doing some research online, I now believe that mortar was the wrong product to use for the gaps. The first repairman was probably right to use a waterproof caulk, he just did such a bad job with the application of it, it came out very sloppy. The repair does not seem to be complicated if you know how to apply caulk properly, something I expected a handyman to be able to do. Additionally, in some of those areas where mortar was filled in between the bricks, I now see that the 2nd handyman did not completely remove the mortar off the bricks. These areas were behind some bushes and I did not notice them until recently. The dried mortar covering the bricks will need to be removed. It's obvious to me that Castleguard did not have the expertise to complete the above outdoor tasks. Just really CRAPPY WORKMANSHIP for this portion of the job.
