Our two-and-a-half year old played for almost two hours on this magical wooden castle. The only things that keep it from a 5 star rating is the lack of a real bathroom and some of the wear and tear on equipment, particularly the leather ropes that have been worn down pretty significantly. It's sort of off the beaten path, but well worth a visit if you're in the area! MATERIALS: The support posts are all wood, but the flooring material is sturdy, composite all-weather stuff. Wear close-toed shoes, because it's a wood chip ground cover. There's grass on 3 sides outside of the play area. PLAY AREAS: - There's a dedicated Tot Lot for ages 2-5, which has tamer play equipment, and toddler/harness type swings. Our 2 year old is normally cautious about slides, but he really enjoyed the one in the Tot Lot area. - One unique feature was a little xylophone that actually sounded nice. The other musical element (some kind of pipes) has been jammed up with wood chips. Gee, who'd have guessed kids would stick would chips in the holes? ;) - The other, larger play area has a set of 4 'big kid' swings, a tire swing, at least 4 slides (both covered and open air), swinging rings, monkey bars, climbing and balancing ropes, and one of those fakey zipline things (just a rolling hand hold on a short track you hang from). There's plenty of stuff to climb. Our son liked running across the bridge because it kind of bounced around as he ran. AMENITIES: - There are 2 covered picnic areas with tables. - NO BATHROOM! I finally got a chance to come here with my neighbor and her toddler on a weekday and I was surprised how many kids were at the playground. However, we never felt crowded here and there are several playgrounds in the park, with one being in a slightly wooded section. Besides children's playgrounds, the park offers extensive greenways, sports facilities, and even, event spaces. Sports facilities include: baseball/softball fields, soccer field and an outdoor fitness center. On my next visit, I'm going to explore even more of the greenways and try to find the steel sculpture in the park called the "Quantum Embrace." Know before you go: 1) Lakeshore is open daily: 6 am - 10 pm 2) Plenty of parking spaces 3) There are public restrooms onsite 4) Events at the park hosted by the Roots & Revelry Group. What a lovely park! We've been making our rounds to all of the parks in the area and this one was…read moreperfect to explore in the morning before it gets lava hot. Many mature trees and the surrounding pond cool down the playground area. There is ample parking and a large restroom facility which are both convenient. Pavilion area that you can rent and a few docks jutting out into the water are nice touches, as is the extensive walking trail that goes around the park and surrounding neighborhoods. As for the play area, it is well-maintained and there is a large sandbox that is clearly very popular (hence, why I didn't take a photo with so many littles enjoying it). The playset has lots of stationary toys on it as well as an abundance of slides. The swing area is separated from the playground and has some unique swing options. Note that the sandbox and playground is directly next to the pond, so if you get high anxiety with young kiddos around bodies of water or have runners, you may want to forgo this park (or at least ensure you have an extra set of eyes/hands with you).

We were there for a…read morespecial event that was trick or treating for the local special needs community - I am so grateful for this event and the inclusion it brought to a lot of awesome kids. The venue itself is awesome, with lots of open play spaces before you head in (semi-fenced for those eloping kiddos out there). Once inside the gated and fenced in area let's ASD parents like ourselves take a breath and enjoy the space a bit more. I loved seeing some of the themes of Knoxville and TN baked into everything - it was well kept and our little loved it a lot! Excited to come back in the future once it's open again officially. It is home to iconic landmarks like the Sunsphere, a 266-foot gold-domed observation tower, and the Tennessee Amphitheater. Today, the park serves as a hub for major festivals, community gatherings, and recreation. Very welcoming space, lots to enjoy, always busy! The sphere is a focal point, when you go through Knoxville on I-40.

Today, the park is a beautiful green space for residents and visitors. The Sunsphere and the Amphitheater are the only remaining structures from the World's Fair in the park. The Sunsphere is opened to visitors. The Amphitheater was shuttered for the winter and in need of a facelift. Several interesting architectural features (posts and statue) are located throughout the park. A colorful bridge passes over the park and waterway. The Park is filled with accessible walkways, a water feature/fountain. A rail trail passes through the park for walkers and runners. We found free parking at the south side of the park. I did not see restroom facilities. Dogs on leases are allowed everywhere except in the fountain area.

I really struggled with the rating here - for me it's a 3.5 overall…read more Highlights: The playground portion was awesome, fully accessible for me to go in and keep up with our little dude. The open spaces to roam are essential for us, and we felt good about him being on the playground side. The staff was really nice on the way in and was occasionally walking the grounds, picking up, checking in, etc. Improvements needed: the hands-on toy section needs a redo. At one point, I'd say it was in excellent quality...but it's clear wear and tear and no investment have led to some of the tiny rooms leaving little to the imagination, with most stuff scattered about with no structure (and existing toys worn out). Kids can make the most of a lot, but this needs a refresh. Side note...the furniture has some sharp points too...if budget can't permit replacing with things with smoother edges, then at least put some covers on the corners. We didn't feel good about that section and tried to block and cover it. That, or gate it. All aside, we are grateful for all the little spots like these that give variety to our kiddo with special needs.
