The view from the sky looks exactly like Pleiku Air Base in a way. Surrounded by a dense green environment. When you're flying fixed wing the landing feels almost like you're in the 1990 film called "Air America" starring Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. Landing at the top of the mountain. PRETTY EPIC!!! The airport of the sky is probably the most secluded airport in the world and the most low traffic airport. Almost every time we flew there it's either only us or if we're lucky we'll see one to two aircrafts. The land fee is $25 is which a total bargain to fly into the most epic airport in California. They're a bit overpriced than most of the restaurants you'll ever eat in the mainly since everything they serve has to be shipped over to the island either by plane or boat. The food is absolutely delicious though prepared homemade style by the most family friendly staff there is. We all love eating there indefinitely. I think by far the most delicious burgers and tacos I ever had in most restaurants in Orange County were from this restaurant. Buffalo burgers are on everyone's favorite list. It's a MUST TRY when you're at The Airport of The Sky restaurant. :) When you're already here you can either take a bus shuttle to the main city Avalon or to Two Harbors the other side of Catalina Island. Or you can try walking but it is EXTREMELY far to hike yourself back to the city.

Enjoy landing here in a sunny day (it does close at 5pm so make arrangements or you're spending the night!) there is a nice airport loop trail where you can sometimes catch bison. The restaurant had decent food, the gift shop has cool merchandise and snacks for hikers, pilots, guests and tourists who stop here on the wildlife tour of the island. There's a fire place for cooler days and the option to camp if you're a conservancy member. You can also grab a shuttles a few times a day down to avalon but it's a bumpy ride. Tony called the restaurant and luckily someone turned it in. He went back to the same restaurant to pick up the cell phone after the 2 hr drive from Avalon to Two Harbors and back. The next day Tony arranged with Maverick helicopter tours to take my husbands cell phone from Avalon to Long Beach where the ferry was taking us that day. What a great experience using Island Express to get from Long Beach to Catalina last weekend…read more I would absolutely recommend this--and plan to use it for any trip to Catalina in the future! My boyfriend gets seasick pretty easily, and the last time we went to Catalina, the hour + long boat ride ruined his stomach for the rest of the day. We decided to book the helicopter ride both for that reason, and because it essentially gave us 2 full extra hours on the island. The customer service, from the booking process itself, was exceptional. On the return trip, flights were delayed because of morning fog. We checked in early, and the team there (particularly Rad), went above and beyond to ensure we were kept informed throughout our wait. They let us leave our luggage and sit in the restaurant next door, coming in periodically to update us. We ended up being able to get on a flight a full hour earlier than the one we were booked on, because they were so accommodating. I HIGHLY recommend Island Express. The price is steeper than the ferry to be sure, but it's only a 9-minute flight each way, and the flight itself is smooth and absolutely beautiful. I can't wait to go again!

We decided to try Tri Shuttle after seeing the positive reviews, and we were glad we did! Unlike Uber, this is a small business, and so it's much easier to be in direct contact with your driver. Tien was our driver both ways. He was friendly, prompt, and a good driver. He texted to confirm our pickups both times, and when we were coming back, he had tracked our flight so he was ready to pick us up at the curb. Getting a rideshare pickup at the airport can be a big hassle, and you usually have to go to a separate area. Then you have to wait for your ride, which your driver may cancel for whatever reason. But with Tri Shuttle, you get picked up in Arrivals as if you're having a friend or family member pick you up. Their customer service and professionalism were excellent (if you use rideshare, you know those qualities can be REALLY hit-or-miss), giving us more peace of mind to enjoy our trip. There are self-serve pamphlets for all the various attractions on the island. My brother's particular question was around getting info for the jet ski tour from Long Beach to Catalina. The guide explained that those originate from Long Beach, and that the jet ski tour guides here in Avalon provide one hour tours around the island. That was enough info to point us in the right direction, and we continued on our way.
