Scuba Luv is great. I've rented gear from their trailer right at Casino Point and it's very convenient. Renting tanks from them is the best. After a dive you can walk your empty tank over and pick up a full one. Doesn't get any easier. I've also gotten nitrox tanks from their shop, which was also a smooth experience. Really unfortunate experience all around. The lady who took our reservation over the phone seemed super unhappy to have to be at work. I asked her to note that we had a nervous fairly new diver with us, she just made a comment that most people are. Upon arriving on the island we checked in at the shop and then hauled our gear down to the point. At Casino point we found the trailer but couldn't get anyone to acknowledge our existence. Finally after waiting patiently we had to be rather forceful about getting helped, we were then told that we were "WAY to early". We were there 30 minutes before our 12 noon dive time and needed some rental gear fitted. Waited patiently for 30 more minutes, then 40, then 45 and finally got greeted and fitted. While we sat there we listened to numerous guides complaining and making jokes about the clients right in front of the other clients, it was uncomfortable to say the least. When our guide arrived I told him exactly what I needed for weight (I had just dived two weeks prior). He said there was no way I needed that much and insisted I only take what he gave me and he would carry extra if needed. Casino Point was an absolute mad house, there were literally hundreds of people there trying to crawl down a single set of steps into the water at high tide with waves coming in. The guide while nice enough wasn't super helpful he plopped in the water and waited for us to struggle in. When we swam out to the line he wanted two of us to go down the line at the same time, the ocean was a bit rough for Catalina and this was a terrible idea, we were getting tangled, banged around and low and behold I didn't have enough weight to descend. My partners regulator hose also turned out to be leaking, so she ascended after only making it down about 8'. The guide said "oh that happens you will be fine, we will just have to take a shorter dive". Um I am sorry but a nervous, new-ish diver wants equipment that works!!!! She was too uncomfortable to make the dive and the guide took her back to the shore. He told me to wait on the bouy. Well as I waited and got tossed around I ended up getting sea sick floating there but I was determined to make the dive. Once down the dive was pleasant enough in between bouts of throwing up from getting sea sick and not being properly weighted. Once up at the top I discussed how hard his job must be, I was once a tour guide myself and it take a lot of patience. I apologized to him and joked about having to "feed the fish". Back at the trailer he graciously signed my log book. I went to change and came back to give him a cash tip. I walked up behind him and he was flailing around making fun of me puking and being ill-weighted to another employee. They were having quite the laugh over it and my partner's "panic attack". I put the tip back in my pocket and walked off. Seems moral is low with the employees here and treating your paying clients like a form of entertainment is acceptable practice. read more

The only spot in the US that you can don a helmet and descend thirty feet underwater and walk on the ocean floor! I loved seeing my 7 year old with an ear to ear grin jumping up and down like an astronaut on the moon. The staff was great, focusing on our safety and comfort...they even took my 5 year old on a "snub a" dive. The kelp forest was so cool with the calico bass, garibaldi and huge bait ball we saw...many thanks to the owner Bob Kennedy and his staff..luis and the dive team! read more

I had taken my open water diver cert here years ago. I enjoyed every minute of it. A few days none of the other classmates had shown up, which gave the instructor and I more one on one time. The clothes and scuba gear they sell are fantastic. Friendly knowledgeable staff. If you want to get certified and plan on spending more than a week on Catalina, I recommend taking it here. I have always wanted to do a shark dive with them, unfortunately they told me due to overfishing that they no longer offer them. This is not their fault and do not hold it against them, but I wish they found a way to do it again. read more

We are novice divers and scheduled a dive with scuba luv. My sister in law had a intro dive with Chris. My wife had a dive with Nash. I was scheduled to go but I wrenched my back and couldn't suit up. My wife loved the dive and their professionalism and friendliness was outstanding. They know these waters. and they know diving. Being underwater with a helmet on and being able to breath and walk around was cool, but there isn't much sea life over where this is done. Christian was our guide and he was great!!!!! Part of the experience that I wanted was to see different things rather than just some fish. This experience is called Sea Trek!!!! Made an appointment via email for two guided dives. The process was not as smooth as I would have expected but I really didn't put in the effort to call and verify all of my details. It worked out and when I arrived they were expecting me. When I arrived, Nash, the divemaster for the day, introduced himself and we did the customary paperwork. No surprises here. Since there were only two of us and Nash, we dove the Dive Park right off of the Casino. Geared up in the parking lot and walked down the steps into the water. Easy! The dives were pretty basic. Definitely aimed at a beginner but the other diver in the group was one so that was fine. Lots of marine life. The kelp was pretty impressive since I had never been in any before. Water temp was a bit chilly at 58 degrees. Surface interval was in the parking lot. There were port-a-johns there for diver use. They had not seen any service in a very long time. Pretty nasty. All in all a good trip and a nice shop to work with. Next time I will be sure the dive boat is going out so I can see some other sites. read more

Went Diving off Casino Point with Nash Last week - I don't dive super often so my Girlfriend and I decided to go with the guided tour that Scuba Luv offers. Nash got us hooked up with the appropriate gear and we were off in a few minutes. Diving was very cool and we saw ells, bat rays and tons of fish. The dive site had steps going right into the water with rails for super easy access. All in all it was a great trip. Thanks Nash you are the Man! read more

I did a guided dive. It was fun. I was certified but had not been in months and this was my second dive. I went with Chris. He was good about going over all the basics with me again. Needed the refresher. He was very patient with me too and took a ton of photos and video for me. Make sure you take a change of clothes on dive site cuz you have to take suit off before they let you in the car. People overall were easy and pleasant to deal with. Water wasn't the best ok the day I went but I'll still try and be back here again and use same company. read more

I have some serious mad love for Scuba Luv! I set up a guided dive all through emails with Tina, she responded quickly and professionally answered all my annoying questions and scheduled us for a 1pm dive with Chris on 7/12/15. Got to the shop a little early and everyone there was super friendly, helped us get all our rental gear(which was in great condition). We opted to rent our gear for the full 24 hours so we could dive on our own after the guided dive, the store was more than accommodating adding extra bottles so we didn't have to worry about a refill. We are both certified divers, however we are pretty newly certified divers with about 10 dives in our log books, and until I feel 100% comfortable going out on my own, I hire a guide. For the peace of mind of having a professional near by and the quick refresher coarse each guide does before the dive. I don't dive on a regular basis, so its not an absolute routine for me yet. That being said, our guide Chris was outstanding! We reviewed the basics, discussed what we may see below, made a dive plan and hit the water with his patented "water step entry system/left to right shuffle". I brought my camera and he was kind enough to take our picture with the memorial. We had originally planned on doing a second dive on our own after the guided dive, Chris was very honest in saying that because the visibility was starting to get low, and there was a bit of a surge, he would wait and get up real early in the morning and hit the water, but ultimately left the decision up to us. We followed his advise and was able to store our rented gear at the shop. All in all, an amazing experience. I greatly appreciate Chris' advise on waiting until the next day for a second dive, all of Tina's time, and will 100% without a doubt be back! Thank you Scuba Luv!! read more

So our group had originally booked a boat dive with another dive shop on the island that canceled on us the night before we left for a day trip to Catalina, screwing us over. We really wanted to dive (the whole point of going to Catalina) so we crossed our fingers and showed up at Scuba Luv right when it opened. They took care of our group of 4 at the last minute and thankfully our trip was saved, we were able to at least dive in the dive park and spent the whole day diving. My only complaint was the fins I had (womens short light blue) were terrible and did not realize it til I was in the water, they should just give those to snorkelers only. Also when we called the shop to pick up gear, there was another group waiting too and they took 40 minutes to come despite saying being there in 10 minutes. Other than that, the staff was friendly, the lady at the front desk was remarkable at multi tasking in getting everyone gear and helping other customers, and the dive master was good. And I am very thankful they took care of our group the day of without reservations. If you are an experienced diver, you probably won't need a dive master. We had one for our first dive not realizing how small the park was, when I go back again I won't hire a guide, the place is real easy to dive IF you are experienced and comfortable with diving. read more

I have been certified since 1976 and diving since I was 11 years old. I took some time off from the sport and wanted to get back in the water with a guided dive. My instructor Bryan was great. I signed my 10 year old for for her first open water experience and it could not have gone better. So two months later I decide to come back and get a few more ratings advanced, Drysuit and Nitrox. I had an equally awesome experience with my instructor Tim. Everybody at the shop has been more than helpful and friendly. I look forward to going back for my Rescue and Dive master ratings in the next few months. The renytal gear is well kept and I have nothing but kind words for the staff. Just completed a guided shore dive (off Casino Point) with Mark Guccione last week. The people at SCUBA LUV were all professional and efficient, and Mark was an excellent guide/dive master. All of the equipment worked fine (we basically showed-up in street clothes and had to rent everything head-to-foot-- bring a towel to dry off with after wards). Their changing facilities (to get into and out-of the wet suit) are rather spartan and it would be nicer if they had lockers at the store to keep your stuff while you were diving, but there are lockers out at Casino Point that you can use for 75 cents. If you've ever been to the Monterrey Bay Aquarium and have seen their Kelp Forest tank and wondered what it would be like to dive in it, go diving in Catalina. If you do an image search on Google for "Catalina Kelp Forest", what you see is basically what you'll get. If exploring the kelp forest tickles your fancy and you have a spare day in So. Cal., the Catalina Express ferry will get you from San Pedro to Avalon in around 75 minutes (the RT is around $75 + $12 for parking), and it's a short 10 minute walk to Scuba Luv. The seals, dolphins, and fin whales on the ferry ride back to San Pedro were just icing on the cake. BTW, the food at the "Lobster Trap" restaurant next door to Scuba Luv was excellent and they really do serve about the best cup of clam chowder that I have ever had. read more

I felt safe and was able to be underwater for a long period of time. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. My family and I were on a cruise that stopped here for the day. We wanted to take the kids snuba and this place fit the bill or so we thought. I wish we would have checked out the reviews before booking it. When we got into town we went to the place and the lady in the shop was not very friendly or helpful at all. she gave us a map and circled where we needed to go, she said it was a 10 min walk. Well it was more like a 20 min walk. It was very confusing to get to. Once we got there the guy was very nonchalant about everything. I told him this was my kids first time and that my husband and I had done it before. He didn't introduce himself and he didn't go over any safety stuff at all. He then proceeded to tell us that he wasn't going to have any gear on himself because he was going to be practicing his "free diving". I was shocked to say the least. when my hubby and I had done this before the instructor went down with us and showed us stuff and even took our picture with our underwater camera for us. This guy wasn't even paying attention to us. I felt very unsafe. When we got out to the water about 10 mins. in my husband's regulator started acting up and not working. The instructor couldn't fix it so he had to leave us, yes leave us!! in the water to go get another regulator. Completely unsafe!! I was so worried about the safety of things and keeping a watch on my children that I didn't even go down in the water. And the instructor could care less. When I finally did try to go under water my mask started to leak water. By then I was done and we went back. Since we had to go back to the ship I couldn't go to the office to complain. I called and spoke to a lady who said she would contact the owner we have been playing phone tag and I haven't heard from him since the last message I left him about 3 days ago. Go with a different scuba shop! Me and a few buddies rented all our gear from them then they told us to WALK to the dive park which is probably about a mile away not too far usually but with a huge oxygen tank and a large sack of dive gear the walk was long and exhausting. On their website we were told that they would drop us off at the dive park and pick us up, but they didn't do this. We called them after our dive explaining how difficult it was walking that far with our gear and they told us they couldn't pick us up with their golf cart but they told us to ask another dive company at the dive park if we could borrow one of their carts! We did just that and ANOTHER business helped us out. Their service was terrible and on top of that they used an old school card swiping method to take down my credit card information that left my card flat and destroyed. Catalina is a beautiful place to dive and there are much better companies on the island to rent your gear from. read more

Tina knew I needed photos reference for a sculpture & painting commission, I called ahead. When I arrived, I had requested a guided tour, first day with Cris, we went to the Disneyland of California Kelp forest, next to the Casino, AWESOME. The next day a personal photo shoot with Joel Wilson a new instructor to the shop, but definitely not new to the diving world. Joel lived in the South Pacific and lives for diving. He made sure I was updated for a safety check and educated on the latest gear. He was considerate about my lower back condition and was there to assist in any way he could. His customer service was superior and knowledge about the kelp forest and location of the coolest local "Critters" in the sea. The next day was the boat adventure with Captain Bob and Dive Master Joel on an amazing 54' footer; the "Scrambler". And she was nothing but "Ship Shape" beautiful kept and Captain Bob was very professional, extremely knowledgeable, lunch break, fresh shower hose and room to roam. We did snuba with this company. I highly recommend doing this the day after snorkeling but before trying scuba diving. If you are interested in doing scuba, do this first. It will at least give you a feel for how comfortable you are below the surface of the water. Our instructor was Cody (sp?). DANGEROUS - DO NOT DIVE WITH SCUBA LUV!! Their web site states - a SAFE, enjoyable experience - not true. My husband said that was the closest he has come to fearing for the life of our daughter whowas on her first ocean dive. They resurfaced, the dive boat was 500 yeards away. Even though the other divers were on the boat, no attempt was made to pick up my husband and daughter. They swam for 1 hour, against the current, were getting exhausted and were running out of air. There was one other lady, closer to the boat that they threw out a line for, my husband and daughter were finally able to reach the rope and pull themselves in. They were too exhausted, from swimming to the boat for an hour to go out on the second dive. I would think a reputable business would have dive masters that would watch out for the divers!! read more

My Husband and I did snuba on 07/03/2012. Our instructor was Cody, although he was a very nice kid the experience was a waste of money. He gave us instructions and out we went. We got to see a kelp bed. The area they take you to is so small, that you really don't see any fish. We found out after we gave him a forty dollar tip that he forgot to take the camera with him. So the pictures we were told that would be done were never taken. Took a couple of pictures while we were still in our gear, but they were never posted on the site for us to view. Such a great experience!!!!! Me my husband and our 3 girls, 8,9,&12, booked our first snorkeling trip with Ruth, Elaina, and Shaun. I was a little nervous as my girls haven't really swam in the ocean before, even though they are avid swimmers, a pool and ocean are very different things...lol! Little did I know that I had nothing to worry about at all! My girls had a blast and Elaina and Shaun even took them so that me and my husband could enjoy ourselves without worrying about them! Ruth also made sure we saw everything there was to see and got to play with all the fish! She was very confident with what she was doing and made sure we were all comfortable! Overall I am so glad that we went with scuba luv to go snorkeling for our first time, they put us at ease and made it such a good experience! We will definitely come back to them for our next adventure!!! Thank you guys so much you have no idea how you put this nervous mother at ease and you made an unforgettable time for our girls. DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY WITH THIS COMPANY. Bought 4 tickets to snuba here, they pushed our time slot back an hour, and when it was our time to snuba we got 1/2 of the time that was promised. Beginning with an unenthusiastic guide, who sat at the bottom of the water in a meditation pose the entire time, we spent 15 minutes signing waivers and getting gear. We entered the water at 2:25 with "full tanks." One of my family members was struggling with her leaky mask and told the guide, he didn't seem to care to help her whatsoever. Like I said, the guide sat at the bottom of the ocean floor completely uninterested in his duty to serve his customers. At 3pm sharp, after 35 minutes in the water he says "alright guys it's 3pm time to get out." When I spoke to the manager after the dive she said 60 minutes was what we should have gotten at minimum. They promised a call back to reconcile our poor experience and never called back. When I reached out for the second time, she then said we get 35 minutes in the water, thus changing her story, yet offered free rental snorkel gear (admitting to being incorrect), which we couldn't use as our ferry was leaving. This company is shady and cannot keep their story straight. They are falsely advertising their services and do not work to rectify these issues with the customer. By far the worst customer service I've ever had, being a Floridian and having done multiple excursions in my lifetime. If you have a dollar to spend, don't spend it here. I am highly disappointed and have filed a dispute with my credit card company. Terrible experience, terrible customer service, terrible company. DON'T DO ANY EXCURSIONS THROUGH THEM. read more

Excellent dive shop--a MUST for your trip to Catalina! The staff are welcoming and extremely professional. They made the dives easy, safe and fun. The marine park offers amazing diving! I'd only dived in the tropics before and wasn't expecting it to be so spectacular--giant sea bass, octopus, nudibranchs, bat rays! Also, it is a great place to learn to dive--especially given that it takes all of 5 minutes to go from the shop to a quick walk into the water. Highly recommend Scuba Luv! read more

I had booked snuba diving for my bf and I for his birthday and it will be a day I will NEVER forget. I had the time of my life it was so much fun and our instructor Cody was the nicest guy. Very patient and understanding, made us feel comfortable and welcomed. The tour lasted awhile and I really got my money's worth, no regrets at all. My bf and I ran into Cody later that day and again very professional and a fun personality we went to have a drink with him (this happened once the snuba diving was closed of course) but trust all these positive reviews, you will not be sorry. Just a bad experience over all. Arrived 5 minutes early from the time we were assigned and waited 35 mins to get the video instructions started. Saw a 15 minute video that gave all the instructions. I was handed a suit of the wrong size. After putting on the entire suit with the shoes, fins and head gear they tell me that the suit does not fit well and that I have to wear another one. This was my first time ever scuba diving. Then they give me a soaking wet, wet suit that was extremely hard to put on. The lady at the counter is rude. We were supposed to dive at 1:30 pm and had not begun the dive until 3:45 pm. Dive barely lasted 20 mins. Such a waste of money. I'd recommend the other companies on the island that charge $99 for way better service (I tried another one of the green pier the next day and they were amazing) than Scuba Luv that charges $121 for mediocre service. I've had occasion to use Scuba Luv several times while over on the Island. A few of those times I've desperately needed something that either I forgot, or broke, or lost, or whatever. Every single time I've been greeted by friendly, helpful, knowledgable staff. I've never felt pressured to buy anything extra (although the temptation is certainly there), and the things I have purchased weren't gougingly expensive. Nice job, guys. Keep it up. read more

Scuba Luv was great ... best part of my vacation! After visiting two other Scuba shops in Avalon, we chose this one. The woman working behind the counter when we first walked in was by far friendlier and more helpful and got us scheduled for a beginning dive right away. Our instructor, Bryan, was also great. Although I was scared and about ready to give up at first, he was very patient and walked me through all the steps. In the end, I had a great time and can't wait to go back. I will definitely go back to Scuba Luv, and would recommend them to others looking for intro scuba.
