We wanted a great meal for my birthday so we chose to go to Cathay Garden. The owners are always so happy to see you when you walk in and you get a warm hello. Our waiter was quick and efficient and all of our food and drink came quickly. We each had a cup of soup ( I love their hot and sour soup and my husband always enjoys the egg drop.) Seeing it was my birthday, we decided to splurge and get the pu pu platter. Egg rolls, chicken wings, wontons, crab Rangoon and beef skewers. I enjoyed the Mongolian beef and my husband had chicken lo mein. Both were prepared perfectly. I had almost half of mine to take home as the portions are very generous. The food was average. The other two Asian restaurants are both better. The service was late. The price on the menu listed here is out of date and some items are triple the listed price. None of the prices are correct. Whatever you do don't order anything else. The veggie dish I ordered is listed on the lunch menu for $5.25. This is our go-to for Chinese food. Delightful, friendly owners and staff. We drive two hours to eat here! The food is always hot and delicious. My favorite is the Moo Shu Pork, which is easily shared with another, or plan to take home enough for a "leftovers" night meal! It was average at best as the fried rice was dry and typically had chicken in it as well. I would not go back because my father's chicken tasted like water in it, which made it very bland, and I had general Tso, which was a bit mild for that type of dish and could have been spicier. read more

This gem of a Chinese restaurant, is on the main drag in Portage. As some of you who follow me know...getting 5 stars out of me, is quite a fete. I have enjoyed everything on the dinner menu. Every entree I have sampled was outstanding. BUT...the lunch specials are the best reason to visit this establishment. There are over 20 items on the special menu. Each of the lunch specials come with the following...Egg drop, or hot & sour soup along with an egg roll, followed by fried rice, and finally your entree. Not only is the food delicious...but there is a price /value relationship that literally defys belief! You will stop in for lunch...enjoy your meal...gasp when the check arrives...and send me a message thanking me for my referral! (I think) I have lived in the Dell's, for 5 years. My wife and I have eaten there several times ,since the current owners (husband and wife) took over around 2 years ago. The food is fresh and home made. They are just as nice as can be. Wanted to switch it up since we always go to Portage Asian Cuisine. But we made a big mistake coming here. Ordered lo mein and got chow mein with what tasted like old chicken. Asked for fried rice and got white rice. They don't have fountain pop so they just give you a can. And my family of four were the only people in the restaurant and got our food really late. My 16-year-old daughter and I went to Cathay Garden for dinner on Saturday, March 3, 2012 - we were snowboarding at Cascade Mountain for the weekend. I had looked up some reviews of local restaurants before our trip, found this one, and remembered it. Both of us LOVE the food from our local Ming Toy (in Beach Park, IL), and we've been horribly disappointed in the past when trying out different Chinese restaurants. Yes...every one is different, and we all have our preferences. Cathay Garden was excellent! Menu was extensive (as expected), everything explained well enough, the usual indicators about spiciness. Prices very reasonable - we ended up with enough food for 4 people, plus two egg rolls, and our bill was about $22 (no alcohol). Super friendly waiter - never forgot about us even though the place was pretty busy with large-ish groups. No one tried to hurry us out (even though our bill was not going to be large). Diner-ish atmosphere, but nice little touches. We ordered the Governor's Beef (similar to Kung Pao) and the General Tso's Chicken. Both listed as "spicy" and we were not disappointed! Flavor and tenderness of the meat - wonderful. Vegetables - nice and crisp. Spiciness - perfect. Temperature - piping hot (as in, wait at least a minute if you can stand to). Zero complaints. If you're looking for expensive atmosphere, maybe skip anything in Portage. If you're looking for the "I can't stop eating this even though I'm stuffed!" experience, go to Cathay. read more

Even after moving away and trying Chinese food in much larger cities, Cathay Garden can compete with most other Chinese restaurants on the basis of their food. Their orange beef remains the best I've ever had. I still enjoy it occasionally when I'm back home. Service is usually good, especially by Chinese restaurant standards. The décor is very outdated, but let's be honest...who goes to a restaurant in a town the size or Portage for the atmosphere? It's easily overlooked, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone looking for a great place to eat in Portage. read more

It's pretty good "bad Chinese food." The lunch specials are ridiculous cheap. Meat, rice, egg roll, soup and fortune cookie for south of 5 bucks. I usually get the General Tso's chicken which is always pretty good. Overall the price is really good for lunch, but food's just average. Service is sometimes lacking--I had a waitress listening to music through an ear bud once. Generally service is friendly though. read more

The food at Cathay has always been good. I've been going there for about 16 years. Whenever I'm in town I have to stop. I love the egg foo young, the egg drop soup, hot and sour soup and pretty much every entrée they have. Especially the spicy dishes Today I was a bit disappointed with my carry-out order. The egg drop soup was half full in the container. Maybe they ran out? The gravy for the egg foo young was thin and salty. I'm used to their thicker gravy with much more flavor. When you pull up and walk into this place, you'll be like, "there's no way I'm at the right place". It's in an unassuming storefront with cliche Chinese restaurant decorations circa 1990. It's pretty dumpy. DO NOT LET THIS SCARE YOU OFF. The food at this joint is freaking amazing I've lived in Washington, DC and South Jersey and unlike most midwest food, this place compares to the better Chinese food restaurants in DC, Philly & NY. IMO the shining star of their menu is their hot & sour soup. It's just perfect. My only complaints other than the decor is that they are closed on Sunday & that they do not deliver. Their staff are courteous & fun, and always recognize a regular. In Portage the dining options are few & far between if you don't want fries with that. There is another oriental food place over by Staples that is newer & brighter but their food cannot compare to Cathay Garden. Don't be swayed. :) read more

First time and most likely the last time we will patronize. The service was good. 3 of us $40. Mongolian beef consist of beef and over grilled onions. It tasted like they used charcoal lighter fluid to cook it. My egg roll had the same taste. The chicken and shrimp had no flavor and only 4 shrimp.. The fried rice was a large pile of very dry rice. The chicken and broccoli with a thin clear sauce was also tasteless. The crab won ton appetizers could have had alittle more crab mixture in it but they were the highlight of the meal. read more

Fantastic food and friendly staff. As noted by other reviewers, the decor leaves a little to be desired, but it wasn't terrible. Same entree choices as most strip mall Chinese joints, but MUCH better quality. The sesame chicken and sweet and sour chicken were both all white meat and fried to perfection.
