It was perfect to lounge around the pool and soak up the southern France sun. It was expensive, but not out of step with competitors. Shuttle service connected the villa with the "main campus" resort and provided easy access to St. Remy, itself a charming town and perfect for a stay in the south. Room service was limited but still provided options for in-villa dining. Breakfasts were easily the best. The downside, however, is that, even with the shuttle, the villa is disconnected from the resort and too far to walk to town. We should have simply rented a great house in St. Remy. Disappointment over the isolation was eased because, frankly, there was hardly anything drawing us to the resort. The restaurants are average at best, the gym is an abject embarrassment, and. . . that's it. There is really nothing else at the resort. Furnishings are tired and in desperate need of a full facelift. The concierge was extremely unimpressive - not particularly responsive and a real challenge to work with. My advice is simply to rent a house in St. Remy.

However, we were offered a table at La Cabro d'Or at check in and in a moment of weakness said yes, convincing ourselves that it needn't be a food extravaganza - we could, say, skip the starter right? Needless to say, upon arrival at La Cabro d'Or (just a short stroll from our hotel bedroom), ideas of this kind disappeared from our mind. We were presented with an two menus - an a la carte and a tasting menu inspired by olive oil produced in the area immediately surrounding the hotel with each dish featuring a different olive oil (including the deserts). We opted for the later and were treated to a very special meal with perfect service from our waiter who seemed to always be at hand when we needed him but otherwise left us to enjoy the food in peace. The food itself was delightful, the highlight being a lamb dish which featured perfectly cooked and tender lamb accompanied by a series of 'pastilles' hitting different olive and fruit notes. We had worried when we ordered that the olive oil inspiration for the menu might become too much of a focal point for each dish. However, we need not have been concerned. While one could trace the olive oil theme through the menu, it was never a dominating presence. In short, this restaurant is highly recommended!

Beautiful hotel and the rooms are adorable - we were so glad we had a ground floor room! overlooked the courtyard and within 30 paces to the great pool - great water temps. Try and time your stay for the Wednesday outdoor market - this was one of the best we had ever seen! hotel Gounod is perfectly situated in the heart of it. Such friendly and multi lingual staff. The breakfast was beautifully appointed with fresh yogurt, cheeses, jams and honey and bread. How much more can I eat?! apparently a LOT. The room we had was smartly decorated too - loved the brown/white color scheme. What a gem - don't miss this one!

The room itself is actually spacious compared to all the other places I have visited in France. There is plenty of room to maneuver around the bed. The room is very clean, as is the bathroom with a rain shower head. There are bathrobes and dispensers for soap. There is a computer in the lobby with Internet access. The wifi was spotty and difficult to connect to from the room. But once the connection was established in the lobby, my phone didn't lose it. The breakfast is pretty standard but good, with lots of fresh fruit, bread, cheese, cereal and fresh squeeze OJ. I would recommend Hotel Gounod.

The Location: in the hill-top village of Les Baux de Provence…read more The Room: A charming, good-sized queen-bed room called La Dame a la Licorne. Furnished with period-appropriate pieces. Enough space for international travelers to unpack comfortably. Lovely views over the village rooftops. While there was an air-con/heating unit, we didn't need it during our stay as the weather was temperate enough to enjoy open windows. The bathroom was a good size and innovative in design for a relatively compact space. The shower pressure was excellent. For amenities only liquid soap in a pump dispenser was in the bathroom. Be advised that there is no lift which will be an issue for those who cannot negotiate stairs. The lovely hosts do assist with luggage. The Staff: Ute and Benoit are totally charming - happy to chat and provide advice/assistance. Food: Continental breakfast was delicious and substantial - consisting of yoghurt, breads/pastries, fruit platter, coffee, and juice. We had dinner at a local restaurant which is literally a pleasant three minute walk from the hotel. Parking: Parking instructions, and parking permit, are emailed to you upon acceptance of your reservation. You need to print the permit and leave it on the dashboard of your car. While you can drive into the village between 7pm - 10am, the streets are quite narrow and some may find it challenging. Outside of these hours you will need to carry your luggage over the cobblestone streets to reach the hotel. Overall Impression: A unique, charming hotel for an overnight stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would happily return!

Stayed here during the off season (November) so it was very quiet and uncrowded…read more The hotel arranged for a driver to pick us up from the airport and also to deliver us to Arles upon our departure. This was arranged beforehand and for a fee. Since we were arriving from the States we arrived around noontime. We asked if our room was available. The woman who checked us in told that check in time was 3pm. I asked if there was anyway our room would be ready before that. Then she said that she would check. Good news, it was! Odd that she was so reluctant to provide a room since the hotel was basically empty. We were driven to our room by the hotel from the reception. The room was quite pretty and a had a beautiful terrace with a stunning view. We laid down and caught a few winks of sleep. Hubby got and tried to take a bath.....no hot water. He called down to reception. They sent someone up. He checked the water then said he had to check the machine. A long while later they called to say the machine was broken and gave us the choice of staying and hoping they could get to work or move rooms. We moved. Now we had a much larger room but no view. It was a trade off for sure. It was close to the breakfast restaurant though. Breakfast was not included but a very nice European buffet. Included breads (all sorts), yogurts, eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, cheeses, fruits, nuts, smoked salmon and jams. The hotel grounds are gorgeous even in the cool and drizzly off season. I would love to return sometime during its glory months.
