Gus Mayer is one of those legacy Birmingham stores that you make your lovely Grandmother take you to to shop at. They have all the nice brands and an excellent black tie gown section if you need something unique and spectacular. My favorite thing to look at here is always the shoes, expect to spend at least $200 on a pair of shoes. But, they're shoes you can't find anywhere else in town. **A note for this year (2025): they had a pair of shoes I wanted that were from Italy, and upon messaging the brand directly, I do believe I avoided some hefty tariff fees by buying the shoes IRL here. Food for thought. I don't often shop in person at all anymore (I'm a major e-bay fanatic), but being able to go in and try on different sizes is incredibly nice. I ended up getting a pair of jeans and shoes in a different size than what I would have ordered online. They have dresses anywhere from $100-$2k, with all the brands like Zimmerman, Staud, etc. They have Mother jeans and my all time fav jeans brand, Mousy -- which were 50% off yesterday!! The "doorbusters" they advertised online were not the bread and butter of what you come here for. Come to peruse. Shoes and handbags are what I recommend. I see the other reviews commenting on the friendliness of the staff... I get it. My thoughts: these are the women of Mountain Brook here to secure their employee discount. Don't hate the player...
