Catrin is a pretty interesting place, the food and drinks are good but not legendary, the prices are fair. But what it really excels in is the experience. Right around sunset many times a week they have a sort of light show in house that is just a ton of fun to behold, especially for a visitor. If you live here you may only need to see it a couple times but as a passer through it kind of is a must see experience. Unfortunately I dont really know when they do the show so call ahead, Ive gone and seen nothing at times. read more

Absolutely what the hell are they doing here, because everything about it is beautiful. Cannot recommend Catrin highly enough. If you're looking for a nicer meal with fun and interesting flavors, this is it. Perfect for a group. We'd had some pretty mid meals in the last 24 hours (looking at you, MUGY ) and decided upon Catrin mostly on gut feelings and a fun website. Y'all I do not know why this isn't on more recommended lists for Merida. Service was extremely quick and through. Food was outstanding. The starters are exceptional. Every salsa we had was so flavorful and thoughtful, some of the best we've had. The barbacoa was flavorful and tender but leaner than many. Tortillas, piping hot and perfect. Drinks were all really solid as well. The vibes are fun. We sat inside but the outdoor area looked really cool as well. I would 100% recommend a visit and cannot emphasize enough how delicious this experience was. I cannot say enough about this place. I was staying nearby during my visit to Merida and I'm almost embarrassed how many times I can to visit. The back garden area is just gorgeous and all the staff are so professional and friendly. I had the Tacos de lechón negro and they lived up to the hype! Tried this restaurant when visiting last week and the entertainment in the back patio is incredible, every thirty minutes there is a light show overlaid on the mural in the backdrop, impressive! The light show on the back patio was amazing. Great for large groups. Festive atmosphere. Had a mezcal margarita and it was smokey yet light. We stayed with roasted chapulines, they were excellent as were the Totopos and the dips. Salsas were great too. Sadly I can remember what I ordered to eat but I know I finished it! We ate dinner here on a Friday night. We made reservations earlier in the week with no problem. We sat in the air conditioned part but was right in front of the outside deck with the cool wall mural. We ordered drinks and everyone got something different. I got an excellent margarita, my wife a vodka tonic, a poloma, and beer. We ordered our entrees of two people getting short rib, tacos gobernador, and the tacos de chamorro. My wife said the short ribs were ok and I enjoyed my tacos. At dark they put on a pretty impressive light show on the mural. Glad we had the table to watch the show. read more

I love the tortilla chips by itself, they were slightly seasoned and the four salsas were all excellent. I loved trying all of them! The black one was my favorite, it had a nutty flavor, but has the highest kick to it. I love the spiciness that it had and it was smoky. Got the Cauliflower steak, Corn, Pork Belly and TACOS! Visited in Jan of 2021. They are on open table if that helps. It can be hard to get a reservation because of covid and table spacing. We visited on a Saturday night. Only 4 tables inside and on the back patio it had quite a few (way too many IMHO) local 20 somethings out back and the music cranking. Very good service and lots of dishes I've never seen or heard of before. I've included part of the menu from that night. For the main course we had the slow cooked short rib. I have to say this is probably in the top 5 best things I've ever had. wrapped in a banana leaf, cooked under ground... just fabulous. It came with hand made tortillas For our appetizers we had the esquite catrin (corn roasted in bone marrow amongst other things) and the pumpkin flower empanadas Both very good but they couldn't beat the slow cooked short rib. Only knock - and this was on a Saturday night - the music was cranking out back and make it very hard to have a conversation on the inside. Probably not an issue other than fri/sat. I'm the kind of person that loves to try new things...I never want to go to the same place twice ESPECIALLY when on vacation & visiting somewhere I may never have the opportunity to visit again. I like to do and see as much as possible in the time I have...That being said...2/3 dinners were spent at Catrin and the only regret I have is that we aren't staying longer to go again! The food was so fresh and so flavorful...the corn, tamales, shrimp tacos and the black pork...incredible!! Margaritas and mezcalitas perfectly made. And the staff...the kindest, friendliest, most welcoming! Roberto took care of us at the bar and the 2nd night we showed up he had a huge smile on his face when welcoming us back. My best meal in Merida. I highly recommend making reservations to sit outside on the patio of your going for dinner. Inside is nice too. My favorite item is the fried octopus and fried pork belly (together) salbute. The breaded fried steak sandwich was increasing. The breading in the steak is more like a dusting and it really brings out the flavor. We went here twice despite having a long list of great places to try. As soon as he entered the restaurant Moe knew we were doomed. That unmistakable aroma of business failure permeated the air. But instead of turning around and making a quick exit, we allowed ourselves to be led past a gauntlet of empty tables to an outside patio where the loud jarring weirdness of an "artistic" light show on endless loop smashed into our senses. It was unbearable and we moved back into said inside gauntlet of empty tables and sat down to order. To make a long sad story short, the food was slapped together into God Only Knows What. We left most of it behind, some of it untouched. Some seafood taco thingy was so full of scary odors that we could not even justify a bite. Even an ordered shot of reposado wasn't the real stuff. Consequently, Moe hearby is obliged to award Catrin with One Star to commemorate an unforgettable Hall of Shame dining catastrophe. read more

We finally had lunch at Catrin - we had tried for dinner a few times in the past but the restaurant was always packed! After being seated and given menus, we were brought some ice cold beers, chips and an assortment of delicious unique salsas. This restaurant is another favorite from Merida! I did love the very modern decor with traditional Mexican. They offer a fusion of Mexican flavors and we devoured everything that we order! The menu prices weren't expensive at all and the waitress was very knowledgeable of the menu and made excellent recommendations. Forgive me for sounding uber American with this one, but this restaurant is the bomb.com. This restaurant came highly recommended by the hotel we stayed at while in Merida. They have English menus (bonus!). Our waitress spoke very good English and was very friendly. Settled on their version of a Cosmopolitan and husband had a Moscow Mule. Both drinks were just okay, not the greatest, but I am still giving a 5 star review because the food is just that good!!! I had the beef tacos with bone marrow (drool, drool, drool) and husband had the barbacoa. Wow! Where do I start? The marrow on those tacos makes them next level delicious. Barbacoa was juicy, flavorful and melted in your mouth. Even though my husband and I sat inside (it was quite hot and humid from the rain and us walking around Centro for several hours), we were able to catch the video projector show that takes place outside. I won't be able to describe it well, so I'm not going to try, but it's a must see if you're visiting Merida! Make sure to stop at the little gift shop in the entrance of the restaurant. They have some fun trinkets if that's your jam! read more

Went to Catrin on the suggestion of staff where we were staying. First impression was Place was nice, good layout. We asked to sit outside in their "terraza" their "terrace". Terrace is nice, a beautiful Sunday night. We arrived about 7pm, the place had only one other table occupied. Food was good not great. I had the queso fundido and the carnitas. My wife had a caldo (soup). Portions were adequate. I have never been accused of being picky but the problems this place had are basic restaurant stuff. Basic stuff that any decent restaurant should know. The waiter brought us our drink order but then was engaged in conversation with another waiter for at least 10 minutes and we finally had to grab his attention to get him to come take our order. We ordered an appetizer and our main course. They brought everything together, WRONG. With the exception of the very little time the waiter was engaged with us he was busy talking with other staff and did not bother to come check on us. From a management prospective having staff on their phones or so engaged in conversation with each other in plan sight of customers while customers are left unattended does bode well. My wife and I both speak fluent Spanish and have been fortunate to have extensively traveled in Mexico eating in many establishments. With that said, although the food was good not great. I would not return to this establishment. It is a pity as I believe that if they would tweak some of the ways the place is run, this eatery has the potential of being really good. read more
