I never looked at the reviews for this place before going, but who does when your pet has to be seen right away and the only place to go to is an emergency vet, knowing going in to expect the office visit to be double what you would pay anywhere else. I will describe my story in great detail to explain with certainty how I got incredibly taken to the cleaners by this place. I am someone who is my 70's on fixed income. My dog was laying on his side next to the bed when my younger dog ran in to jump up on the bed and didn't see him. I saw her jump on his side as a springboard almost that got her up on the bed. He Wailed loudly and was crying. I said oh no, she hurt his SPINE. Because he now couldn't lift his head. Off to the Vet, my wife brought him as I was sure they would see the back issue and need to put him down, it is one thing too hard for me to bear. But, my wife called and said they need to do a list of things to him, I said... what things? I speak to the doctor and say what are you doing? She said well we are up to $1300 or so dollars so far because of the tests we need. I again said what 'tests'? Well we need 2 xrays, a blood sample, a urine test, liver kidney and all other organs she mentioned test. I repeated what had just happened and we just need an xray where clearly it was a SPINE issue and to do that first? (which she CLEARLY did not want to do$$$$).....but 'using' the emotions of my wife hearing her in the background desperately saying this is our dog, we have to do what they say to do...while overhearing the doc telling me no we can't do just xrays So now the estimate goes to 3,800 to 5K+ Xrays in. Doc says well we didn't see anything alarming in the xrays and the blood tests won't be back right away so we need to keep him overnight and give him fluids. So now I am thinking, geesh no concern on the xray so maybe it IS something else, yeah keep him overnight he is our baby. Next morning wife goes to visit... Doc says, he really isn't doing very well and you might want to put him down.... When my wife called me and told me, I said then what the hell happened? The doc tells my wife....get this........ IT"S THE SPINE. Yes this happened Am I super pissed about this....bet your ass I am!!! There is my tale of woe, take from it what you will, and leave the rest. read more

Catskill animal hospital took amazing care of my boy Jax. He had a run in with a porcupine with over 150 quills in his face, lips, and throat. We called and were able to get him in first thing in the morning. Not only were they quick to respond but the care of the techs and vet was honestly heartwarming. Wow. Don't bother calling, not taking new clients. I just moved to area. With two fully insured purebred dogs that I would do ANYTHING for I was thrilled to see an animal hospital a half mile away. Called to make an appointment for pedicure with healthy dog. Would have understood and paid exam fee as a new client. Receptionist told me to get lost, not interested. When I tried to explain that I was potentially a new and very good client, she said yes, but no we don't want to see you. I'm astounded. read more

Brought my dog in last week because she was having trouble walking and moving. This guy Oliver (I will not call him doctor) gave her an anti inflammatory. Well, one week later, she is dead. I drove her to NJ to see a real vet, because she couldn't move. She had a brain tumor. Avoid at all costs. read more

Wow. I've been a customer for 20 years and Dr. Jenkins was wonderful. Went to see Dr. James Figge, III yesterday and he was less than civil. My dogs are healthy, exercised 5 days a week for an hour and treated like prized members of the household. One of them is a rescue with a bad hip/leg and, even though she's exercised, she lays around a lot and favors her leg, so she's overweight. He went up one side of me and down the other before he knew anything about the dog. Didn't even ask before he let into me, actually. My other dog was hit by a truck at 1 year old and I spent $3K to get extensive dental surgery at an emergency hospital. Because of that, he has teeth issues and Dr. Figge let into me about that, too, suggesting it was poor diet, before even asking about the dog's other missing teeth, which were removed during the surgery. Not going back. I'll look for another vet who takes more time to learn the dogs' histories and treats me with respect. read more

Amazing vets. They are excellent, intuitive and logical diagnosticians. They will keep your pet healthy and spare you unnecessary testing and such. Everyone from the front desk to the vet techs are delightful and caring. Seen all sorts of vets over time. (Having worked in veterinarians' offices in NYC and having grown up on a farm.) made me wait from 8:30 to 4pm on a rainy day and live an hr away. took a day off work to tell me they would not do my dogs CT because they had an emergency! and then proceed to tell me that since I work in the medical field I should know these things happen. yes they do but we let the patient know. prior to that no lab results for 2 1/2 weeks! my dog is 14 yrs old with severe arthritis and possibly may have had a stroke or cancer. their attitude about the whole situation was careless and they did not care about my dog. I have been to pet cure and they never did that with an appt. they gave us a time and time to stop feeding my dog and even accommodated a time since we were traveling from far. I told them after telling them I was not happy about this arrangement dr Daniella said that was their policy. well next time let people know that because I was not. I would not have wanted a senior dog waiting without her rimadyl to stay in pain all that time. and from what I read about the other reviews sounds like I am right. they don't care. staff is too young for the most part. I went there because someone recommended them. would not go back! read more

As I expressed previously, we've not been as pleased with this practice since it was sold to an Albany based group, but this takes the cake. Old lab suffered an apparent stroke. Call this vet on Sat. AM to arrange to bring him in for exam or probable put down. Was told they were too busy and try New Baltimore. We are 26 year clients with multiple animals which we care for and provide any needed health care. This is very poor business, especially in a small community. My wife called back (much calmer than me) and they agreed to see him at the end of the day. But still I have a bad taste in my mouth and will heed their advice to seek future care elsewhere. read more

This place was good before they were bought out. In my opinion they really concentrate on getting the bill as high as possible now. They don't seem to do a good job either. They will run a lot of tests that don't seem to really help them figure out what is wrong , but they will charge you a lot for them. Just for the visit they will hit you up for almost $100 then tests etc. Expect to pay between 200-300 for any sick animal. Urgent care is only 125 for people... so you do the math... I wanted to like them and continued to use them, but now I am moving on. If you can do the drive I recommend Copake Animal hospital. read more

I would never recommend this vet to anyone. The ladies behind the front desk are great, and there are a couple vet techs who do a great job but the actual veterinarians are awful. I brought my dog in for an infection in his eye. Dr. Oliver came into the room and didn't even say hello to my dog, his patient. He got right to testing. His hands were very shaky and he had no actual answers to any of my questions. I told him I was concerned about a possible ear infection and they didn't even bother checking his ears. They sent us home with eye medication for conjunctivitis and we were on our way. Later that day, my dog couldn't walk.. so I emailed the vet and they had me bring him back in the same day. Blood test for Lyme disease was done, came back positive, sent us on our way with new meds for that. 2 days later my dog went blind. Back to the vet. You can probably imagine how well that went. Dr. Oliver performed the same exact test on my dogs eyes that he did the first visit. Said the same exact thing and had no answers. Don't go here if you actually want answers. The only 5 star review was written when the place had different owners. There is no more love from the doctors in this practice. Do NOT go. read more

We brought our 8 year old yellow Labrador here early last month after he developed a persistent limp in his right shoulder, stiffness in other joints (which led to a broken toenail when coming into the house one day) and was experiencing a gradual decrease in appetite. He was examined by Dr. Kirby and was found to have a fever, but tested negative for common parasitic infections via a 4 Dx test, so was determined to have a bacterial infection that was affecting his joints and given a shot of Penicillin and prescribed Amoxicillin for 10 days. He also had a quarter-sized scab on his leg which we assumed was from a bug bite, and though we knew it seemed a bit slow to heal, we thought it was because the dog would bite bandages off it and lick at it from time to time, instead of leaving it alone. The vet had seen it/felt it while examining each of his limbs, but didn't ask us anything about it. We would later learn that a slow-healing wound can be a sign of cancer, amongst other things. Halfway into the course of Amoxicillin, he began putting less weight on his left hind leg and continued to eat less. We attributed the continued decreased appetite to the new medicine and bought several different brands of dog food to try to find something he might like, and when that didn't help we started him on a homemade diet, which seemed to help him to eat more, but his appetite was still nowhere near what it had always been. By the end of his course of antibiotics he was putting more weight on his left front shoulder but the limp on the left back leg had become much more pronounced, he was starting to hunch his back when standing, and he was beginning to struggle to keep his balance on the floors inside the house, which he had never had a problem navigating before. We went back to Catskill Animal Hospital explaining these changes, and he was AGAIN prescribed antibiotics (this time Cephalexin for a 10 days) as Dr. Kirby believed he still had a bacterial infection affecting his joints, and was also given a shot of cortisone in the hind leg that he had begun limping on. He did full blood work this time around and saw that the dog had an elevated white blood cell count but again confirmed this was likely because of a bacterial infection and assured us that this round of antibiotics should do the trick. The Cephalexin did nothing more than make the dog excessively thirsty, and made him have to pee more frequently and gave him diarrhea, causing him to be restless as he would have to go outside much more frequently than he ever had needed to before. He also would also pant and drool while on the Cephalexin (even when he was just resting in temperature-controlled rooms). We were told we could give him Aspirin as needed, but even the smallest doses exacerbated his panting episodes and made the drooling worse. He continued to eat less, and by this point we were feeding him by hand while he sat down, as he seemed to not want to eat while standing (though we had raised his water and food bowls for him when he first began limping so he wouldn't have to strain his already bad front shoulder and his increasingly stiff neck). His left front shoulder now was so much more swollen than it had been before. He was losing his balance more frequently and also would whimper at night if he fell asleep on the side of his body with the stiff shoulder and weak hind leg, as he couldn't roll himself back over without help. Toward the end of his round of Cephalexin, we realized no improvement was to come and another call was placed to Catskill Animal Hospital. The following day Dr. Kirby called us back and WITHOUT EVEN WANTING TO SEE OUR DOG, he offered to prescribe a THIRD round of antibiotics (this time Doxycycline) and a painkiller (Rimadyl), or said that we could try to take him to see someone else. He offered no other testing and we knew that antibiotics were doing nothing for our poor dog and he was going downhill fast, so we immediately made an appointment with New Baltimore Animal Hospital. New Baltimore Animal Hospital sent him right away for x-rays and discovered cancer spreading throughout his body. We were absolutely devastated and because we were told that he didn't have much longer, we made arrangements for Dr. Blankfein of Delmar, NY to come to our home later that night to put our poor baby to sleep. We are still recovering from the shock of this entire experience. Had Catskill Animal Hospital bothered to do x-rays to begin with, the cancer could have been discovered sooner. While we understand that the cancer was likely already getting bad by the time he started limping around, we could have at least spared the dog the additional discomfort that the antibiotics had caused and we could have shed the false hope that he was going to get better. It was so painful watching him get worse, and have no answers as to why. We could have been able to plan for and provide better end-of-life care instead of trying in vain to rehabilitate him. read more

I love this Vet. The doctors are very friendly and know A LOT, and always help me with advice on products. The receptionists are friendly too. Not a rip off either which I love. This vet sits on top of a hill and there's not a lot of parking, and the waiting room is small, but the office (at least whenever I went) was never full. read more

I WISH that I could give this vet ZERO stars. We are in town for the weekend with our dog and accidentally left his diabetic dog food at home. We called Catskill Animal Hospital because the Hill's dog food site says that they carry the special Diabetic W/D Dog food that we need for our DIABETIC dog. Knowing that not feeding a diabetic dog could drastically change its blood sugar, the Vet told us that we would have to come in for an appointment before they would give us a bag of food....and the earliest open appointment is for 3:30!! 3:30 in the afternoon after our dog has not been able to eat his normal food in the morning which needs to be regulated. Needless to say, we had to take the afternoon appointment, which will cost a lot of money, just so we could get some Diabetic food to our Diabetic dog. read more

Prior to new ownership they were amazing...now just unhelpful, and unkind...willing to let my animal die because it wasn't a dog or cat. They are awful for dogs too. When my dog broke its leg they wouldn't give him an appointment for three days rather than get him in right away because they were too busy. Run from these vets! read more

Back in March I brought my almost 10 year old mini poodle in to have a fatty mass on his side examined. It came back negative for any signs of cancer but I was still anxious to have it removed because of his age and placement. There were other things that needed done also, the vet advised me to get all the work done at one time, so he wouldn't have to go under anesthesia a second time (due to his age). We talked it over and set the date for June 10, 2015. On June 10, I took the day off of work to bring my dog in. I waited patiently for a good 30 minutes. Then the nurse came out to go over his paperwork for surgery. I mentioned the fatty mass again, along with teeth cleaning and some moles to be removed. A few minutes later the vet came out and said he had "forgotten" to do blood work so we couldn't do surgery today. As much as an inconvenience this was, due to me missing a day of work, I understood mistakes happened. We rescheduled for today, June 22. This morning my father was able to drop my dog off. When his surgery was done the vet called my father to let him know everything went well but he had started the surgery late, and then didn't have enough time to take the masses off. When my father told me about this conversation I immediately called the vet and left a message for him to call me back. While we spoke he told me that he was unaware that the masses were a priority, but then said he ran out of time. So due to poor time management my dog didn't get the main surgery I had asked for. I stated that we had talked about the masses, they were put on the paper work the first time the surgery was supposed to happen (then he couldn't do the surgery because he forgot to do blood work) and this morning when my father dropped him off, he again stated the information about the fatty masses. He then kept responding that there must have been some "miscommunication" between him and I. There wasn't. It was stated verbally to him and his nurse and written on his paperwork. I said that I was disheartened that this had happened. I reminded him of how he told me to get all this surgery done now due to his age. I told him I will not pay for him to be put under again because of his mistake. He said he had to talk to his superiors. I stated that I had no problem paying for the surgery but I refuse to pay for the anesthesia again because they messed up. He said he would talk to them and call me back. Around 3 this afternoon my father went back to pick my dog up. He arrived and asked to talk to the vet. The vet was rushing him and telling my father he had another patients and no time to talk. My father simply wanted to explain how upset he was with what was going on between me, my dog, and the vet. My father asked to have a bill written up stating we will not be responsible for the anesthesia next time, he went into his office and slammed his door. My father waited patiently and when the vet came back out with the paperwork he was in a more "approachable" mood. He handed him paperwork stating the anesthesia will be covered by them. I'm so thankful my dog is okay and seems to be in good, but sleepy spirits now. I'm so incredibly disappointed with the attitude I received from this vet, along with the attitude my father received in person picking my dog up. I'm solely going back to this vet to complete the surgery that was supposed to be completed today. After this, I will never bring my dog or any animal I care for back to this place. read more

Caring for animals becomes acute when an emergency occurs, and this is when I fly to your side for help. Most of all I appreciate the kindness shown not only to my pets but to me, as your client. Others may list their experiences as complaints, with no chance for rebuttal or explanation from your office. I will stand as witness to the validity and professionalism of your services. Recently there was a clerical error and I made a trip to gather medicine for my animals but was not able to retrieve it: our cats had not been seen at your office for years (2). I found out that there are legal guidelines for veterinarian services, and I was on the outside of those parameters. However, I made an erroneous harsh judgement in my mind and went away angry. As usual, when we take the time to consider both sides the truth rises and our nerves lay down. I have been bringing our dog to Catskill Animal Hospital since adopting her! I have always been helped by caring friendly and professionally acting individual's! Once while sitting in the waiting room, a person from out of state came in without an appointment looking for assistance because he had lost his dog's required medicine. The office staff went above and beyond to help this individual, they actually called his vet in his home state to get the required information so this person could get the medicine his dog required! That's excellent service to the fullest extent! I recently had to make a very hard decision concerning our dog, and the office staff and vet were more than helpful and very compassionate and I feel went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and understood totally what my options were concerning our dog. We received a sympathy card yesterday in the mail, signed by all the employees at Catskill Animal Hospital with notes of condolences! Thank you all very much for your heart felt wishes! I will always give Catskill Animal Hospital the best recommendations possible, they all (office staff, veterinarians and assistants) are totally professional and caring individuals! read more

Please don't take your animal here! They have been bought out by a larger 'company' and are charging very high prices, have little to no concern for your pet, over prescribe meds, I can go on and on. Our little kitty would be dead by now if we had listened to them. Took her to another vet and she is doing well, with just a mild antibiotic! "Oh you need to have more tests done, her kidneys are failing....Blah blah blah" Nothing is wrong with her kidneys you greedy heartless people. My neighbor just called distraught because for an exam and blood tests it was over $200.00! Like the reviewer before me, I don't like to have to write reviews like this, but I wish someone had warned me!. They had a tech call with blood results (visit was over $200.)...she had no idea what to say, gave no answers to my questions, just suggested more testing. Stay Away if you love your pet! We moved to Greene County in the late 1980's. A priority was to find a good Veterinarian. Catskill Animal Hospital was recommended to be the best, and in my opinion, that remains true to this day. Yes, there are new owners and changes have been made but, that does not detract from ALL the wonderful staff whose only concern are our beloved pets. I have been blessed to have had Dr. K. to care for my MANY little ones from the first visit many years ago to the present. A dedicated, caring and educated man whose only concern are his patients. I have witnessed a dog that had been hit by a car attended to IMMEDIATELY and the saddness felt by all the staff when a pet was old & could no longer walk & was gently put to sleep. Not only are the pets cared for but their human counterparts as well. As long as Dr. K. remains and the new owners continue to up-hold their high standards I will always recommend Catskill Animal Hospital as the best. read more
