We adopted two kitties (Mocha and Latte) in April. We had them for two months. The website stated that Mocha "loves the attention of people." In the two months that they lived with us, we were never able to touch her. They pooped and peer all over our home (on our bed and various rugs) despite having three clean litter boxes. We consulted with foster people, our vet, the spca- tried EVERYTHING (feliway, cat attract, containing them in small areas)- whatever was suggested and could not stop the behavior. We called Animal Kind and left messages, trying to get there help. No one called us back. Once someone did actually answer the phone and "understood our concerns." We had to surrender them and I cried for a week. They are back on the website with their same initial and inaccurate description. It was a very traumatic experience for us and most certainly for those poor kitties. I pray someone takes them home. And I will never go to Animal Kind again. read more

Update: After taking our new cat to the vet for a new patient check up, we learned that our cat's pre-adoption health check missed or failed to inform us of a terrible and painful dental infection. Our poor kitty's gums were fire-truck red! She has since received treatment and is doing better! We also learned that it is not uncommon for sick cats to be adopted out of animal kind. I do not fault the main staff, as they have so many cats that they care for and so few people. I am however disappointed in whoever performed the health check. Any vet that could miss a dental infection like that is either under-informed or negligent as checking a cat's mouth is a very routine part of a check-up. So I do not understand how a vet would miss that without acting out of either ignorance or negligence. I sincerely hope they do better going forward read more

I really wish I had read these reviews before wondering in one day. I have worked with many animal rescue places through my business. We teach about animal care, shelters, veterinary science, and wildlife care, among other topics. This is definitely the worst place I have experienced. Disorganized is definitely at the top of the list of many issues I experienced. I love that they are here to help rehome the cats and give them a chance at a better life. However, the way the place is run is a great disappointment. I support their goals, but I do not agree with how they run their business. I really and truly wanted to love this organization. I lost my gorgeous 14 yr old boy to cancer and am now ready for a new fur baby. From the moment I opened the front door I was instantly met with a very strong smell of kitty litter. Walking through the entire facility I couldn't find any actual dirty litter boxes which made me try to ignore my gut instinct of walking out after being hit with the smell. I've walked into multiple cat adoption agencies and never experienced such a strong kitty litter smell. Once I walked around and met all the cute kitties, I truly wanted to choose 1 of two adorable little souls. However, I was yet again met with another problem. In each enclosure there were at least 2 cats with a respiratory disease. None of the care takers mentioned which cat was undergoing vet care and wasn't ready to go home yet. They were quite ready to just let me adopt any cat, whether they were healthy or not. I was even asked if I wanted to go up to the infirmary!!! I'm not sure what they were hoping would come from that. I'm so sorry to read about others who adopted fur babies and ended up with very sick cats. AnimalKind I know you love the animals in your care, and being a rescue is incredibly hard work. Please revise how your office is run. If we need to complete an adoption application and meet your requirements, we do so with the hope that you have high standards for the animals in your care. read more

I think what they do there is a good thing trying to place the cats in homes however the cats are not healthy when you take them home. I adopted 2 and both have been to the vets and have costed me over $1,000. I have only owned the cats for 6 weeks. Both had respitory issues and my one has 3 different parasites. When I asked for help with the vet bills I was told the cats needed to come back there for their vets to check. Well I live an hour away and the vet is only there a couple days a week. Also there is a person there who is not very friendly when picking up the cats or leaving them to be fixed. They send you home with a paper in which you sign but don't explain what it is. An emergency to me means the cat needs to be seen right away not a cat who is sneezing and coughing. Aslo called and left a voice message before cats went to vet and no return phone call. Before you adopt there make sure everything is explained to you as to what an "emergency" is as you will be stuck with vet bill. Love my cats, saved them, so lucky we found each other read more

I really hate to give a negative review because I feel it hurts the animals but I really feel that I must. I have adopted 3 cats from here (at different times) and 2 of the 3 are now deceased. Many of their cats are sickly and they try to push them off on people as if nothing is wrong. They also grossly underestimate the age of some of their cats I am not sure what the vet does to check them out before being put up for adoption. In addition to my personal experiences I have heard of people adopting cats that were FIV positive yet adopted out as being tested negative and putting their other beloved animals in danger. I have had to go through the emotionally crushing experience of losing 2 babies and have had 2 other cats in my household get sick from carelessly vetted cats by this place. I just want to spare others this heartache. Just take a close look when you go visit and see how many of their cats are sniffly and have eye discharge. If you do decide to adopt here in spite of the warnings please do take your cat directly to your vet, do not even go home first. 2 stars for having one healthy cat out of 3... read more

We adopted our cat a year ago. While he seemed to be in good health up until two days ago. He has kidney issues. We were not informed of these issues when we adopted him. These issues caused a blockage in his urethral tubes. Our Oliver is very sick and has been brought to Upstate Veterinary Hospital. The bill for his care up to this point is $3000. He's only 16 months old. While I applaud the effort Animal Kind is making I think they should look into another vet to process exams. We are faced with an enormous bill and we aren't sure if he will ever be the same. Someone out there should look into the way these cats are checked over. It's a shame that because of the neglect, good cats have to suffer. read more

First of all I don't understand the negative comments on this page whatsoever. The cats they have for adoption are rescued from the streets and feral mamas. There is no guarantee on the health of any living being be it that you adopt from some fancy rescue or a non-profit where the workers are busting their behinds at very little pay. I agree that it's frustrating that the vet is only available a few days a week but he spayed my Old English Sheepdog, they have immunized my other dogs at little to no cost when I was having money issues. Another dog of mine was hit by a car and I brought him straight there and they nursed him back to care. Geez people give it a break, these people work hard, are underpaid and truly care. I would recommend them to anyone looking to rescue a cat or kitten 100%. They are always looking to help be it feline (which is really their specialty) or any other species. read more

Would not recommend this shelter to anyone unless you want to be dragged through the ringer. I put in an adoption application for a cat that has been there for over 2 months. Was told I was basically approved they just need one more reference then I was good. I got my other reference in and didn't hear from them for 4 days and all of my phone call were ignored. I messaged them on Facebook to see what was going on with the cat I applied for and I was told he was that day diagnosed with diabetes and a shelter worker wanted him. I told them that's okay I would still like to meet him and I can take care of his needs. They said okay we can set up a meeting Tuesday. I called Monday to make an appointment and was told sorry it doesn't really make any sense for you to come meet him he's already spoken for by the shelter worker, she's been coming in for a month to give him his medicine (yet we were told he was just diagnosed not even a day ago.) when I expressed my feelings all they did was send a link for a foster application. The way they do business is extremely unprofessional. Sounds to me that no body wanted this cat when I put in the application and all of the sudden they saw someone wanted him and now they want to keep him. Very extremely upset with the way this shelter is run as a whole. Don't ever bother calling this place either they answer the phone 0/100 times and if they do call back they wait till 3:50 and close at 4 so you don't have time to call back if you miss the phone. read more

I find it interesting that most of these reviews don't explicitly say that they have adopted from here.... it makes me wonder what these reviews are for, if most of them haven't actually worked with the organization. CHeck out google reviews for some extra info. We have along story with Animalkind and I want to love them, I do. However they are disorganized and their cats are often sickly and with questionable veterinary care. While it's fantastic that they are cage free, their facilities are often overcrowded and dirty. The cats in the feral room (my favorites) are often dirty and sad. We adopted 3 cats from them (1 for us, 1 for us that had to end up with a friend [more later] and one for a a friend who was approved by Animalkind). All three of these cats came to us with health problems undiagnosed by Animalkind. Cat #1- we wanted a black girl cat, we were very specific. Out needs were scoffed at by the volunteers who tried to talk us into several cats even though we were specific about female, young, and good with other cats. We ended up loving a boy kitten and decided to risk it. He had some snot on his nose, and we notified them when we said we wanted him. We took him home and within week he was lethargic and sneezing. We took him to the vet- it turned out he had Bartronella, or cat scratch fever. It can be contagious and we had an elderly much beloved cat who was put at risk. We quarantined the kitten, who sneezed Snots all over our spare room. But soon (well, in about 4 weeks) he was better. However, on his vet visit the vet notified us that HE WAS NOT NEUTERED, Animalkind adopted us a boy kitten with big ole testicles. No wonder my cats hated him so much. We ended up giving him to our approved friend along with the cat she adopted (and were reprimanded for this by a volunteer). He was a wonderful sweet cat who died less than a year later. Oh yah, he also had FIV, undiagnosed (or un-shared) by Animalkind. Cat#2- we adopted a 5 year old girl for our friend. She had been at the shelter FOREVER. She was shy and skittish, and put in the feral room, almost guaranteeing that no one would meet her. She was diagnosed with a skin condition by my friend's vet once she was taken home. Chronic but not deadly. She continues to be shy and mistrustful a year later, but she is getting better. Cat#3- we adopted a tiny black cat, the little back female cat we initially were looking for but were dissuaded from at first. She was designated feral and so has an ear clip. However, she is the sweetest baby, will climb on your chest and rub her face on yours, purr like a motor and can't be away from us if we are sitting on the couch. She has herpes in her eye, which is ok now by may lead to an ulcer later in life. At least she was spayed. Other issues not covered- each of these cats had Giardia prior to coming home with us. Each time we were going to drive the 90 minutes to pick up a cat we had been approved to adopt, we were called day-of and told the cat was not ready because it had Giardia. This happened all three times, which tells me that they do not quarantine the cats for the week they say they do (or they would have called us sooner). Also, the vet I witnessed there terrified each baby trying to clip their toes and check them out prior to leaving. THE PLUS SIDE- some of the volunteers are great. One even gave us her personal cel to check in with her about the cats we were interested in. They did reimburse us of call medical bills acquired in the first month of adoption, as they said they would (which was great because we ended up with about $800 of medical bills for these 3 cats.). I would recommend, if you get a cat there, immediately bring it to your vet. Like, on the way home from the shelter. These kitties were freaked out about the carrier once we go t them home. Have the vet run all the tests, especially if you have cats at home who you might be exposing to things. It's not impossible that I might get another cat from there. I feel so sad to think of the kitties squished into their facility, with little attention (it seems) from volunteers and little work done to socialize these scared, traumatized, abandoned animals. I want to save them all. I'm just not sure I can afford to, either financially or emotionally :( read more

Animalkind in Hudson does a fantastic job of caring for kitties who, for whatever reason, don't have human families to love them and take care of them. It's not some clean and beautiful facility -- it's real life. They operate on donations and volunteers. I've donated many times, especially when there's been a natural disaster and they've had to take in a lot more cats than usual. The people there are loving and attentive and the cats get medical care. Please be kind and donate if you can. read more

Animalkind takes in homeless, feral and injured cats. They have an awesome cage-free shelter in Hudson, NY. The shelter is separated into many different rooms with glass doors and windows and each little room holds around 3-10 cats. These rooms are furnished with all sorts of pet furniture, much of which is built into the walls so they are able to explore and seek privacy off the floor. Before sending a cat to her new home, the workers at Animalkind take a stool sample for medical testing, de-worm and de-flea the cat, and cut her nails. This is in addition to what they do upon bringing the cat into the shelter: spaying (or neutering), vaccinating, and microchipping. The staff here is kind and knowledgeable. They have records on every cat so that you can find out exactly how your new furry family member came to be at the shelter. They do not require any adoption fee in fact do not even ask for a donation when you take your new kitty home. EDITED TO ADD: If you adopt a cat from Animalkind, you can keep returning to the shelter for the cat's vaccinations. All shots at Animalkind are $10 or $15. They have saved me so much money already! read more

Although the intentions of this organization are genuine and refreshing, AnimalKind is one place I would recommend avoiding if you're considering adopting a cat. The staff/volunteers are attentive and charming but, Katrin, the director, runs a haphazard business. There are an abundance diseased felines mingling with those that are healthy and all of them are infested with fleas. I adopted a cat several months ago from AnimalKind who, at the time, was given an approximate age of 6 years. I was unable to take her home right away due to complications with her kidneys. After about four weeks, I received a delightful call informing me that my cat was given a clean bill of health and ready to come home. I had Ivy (Guava) for about 3 months when her health began to decline rapidly. My partner and I brought her to Sand Creek Veterinary Hospital where we were informed that she was about 11 years of age and in chronic renal failure. We were faced with the harsh reality that Ivy was not going to make it and needed to be euthanized. I emailed Katrin informing her of the situation in which I was appropriate and reserved. I politely suggested that she choose a different vet to par her business with so that this misfortune did not fall upon someone else. I never received a response. Had I been given a proper medical history and prognosis, neither Ivy nor myself would have suffered. I suggest adopting through AnimanLovers or the Hudson-Mohawk Humane Society. read more

I'm writing this with a broken heart, after having to euthanize Virgil, a cat that we adopted from Animalkind just 4 months ago. This is the second time that I have adopted a *critically ill* cat from Animalkind. I realize they are rescuing cats from some pretty bad situations, but with a veterinarian onsite, there is no excuse for failure to notify the public about health issues. I do not feel that this organization is honest with the public about the health of their animals, and I will not adopt from them again. BTW, the kitten that we adopted on the same day as Virgil last September is now also sick. read more

I am absolutely in love with this place! They rescue tons of kitties (and doggies) from all over the NY area and beyond. If you love cats, then you'll be in heaven at Animal Kind--- it's an entire floor filled with cats roaming around. There are couches to sit on and they jump in your lap to cuddle up and play. Animal Kind is home to about a hundred cats or so. When I am ready to adopt some kitties, I will definitely come here. read more

If I could give zero stars I would, Worst experience ever. Went to have my dog neutered, setup the appointment almost 2 weeks in advanced, got there only to be belittled and turned away because the gentleman behind the desk decided my 7 month old was too young and I was harming him. When I asked why I was even given the appointment to begin with when the woman who booked me knew his age, he said he was not informed and if he would have known he would have never allowed me to book an appointment. He told me to come back in February, this man was incredibly rude, they wasted my time and for a shelter letting a sexually mature dog back out into society without being fixed seems bizarre to me. I can see why people do not get their animals fixed, if someone did not have other options or was not informed, I could see them thinking fixing an animal was actually harmful to the animal because of the way this man spoke to me. I am not blaming the receptionist or the woman I spoke with to book the appointment, if this gentleman has the final say he should be the one booking appointments instead of wasting peoples time. I went here because my regular vet could not get our new dog in until after the holidays, thank you incredibly rude man for turning me away I am taking this is a blessing in disguise. I managed to get an appointment with my vet for 2 days after Christmas because they thought your opinion was ridiculous, you are a shelter that offers spay/neutering, I wonder how many people and animals you have turned away that have resulted in unwanted litters that turned into homeless animals or had an even worse fate. read more

I am a nurse of 21 years and after a horrific accident at work leaving me with a neck, shoulder, and spine injuries as well as a traumatic brain injury, my daughters felt adopting a cat would be comforting for me. And so, daughter by my side, I adopted a cat from Animal Kind. We were told she was 2 years old, healthy, and that her paperwork would arrive in the mail. The staff were very sweet, supportive and kind. Paperwork stated Willa (renamed by me) was 5 years old and in-firmed with a life long viral respiratory infection. Paperwork also stated she was leukemia positive but to the side indicated she has leukemia negative with the initial diagnosis crossed out but legible. Willa, my ESA (emotional support animal) has been to the vet multiple times in respiratory distress necessitating medications. No longer trusting Animal Kind, I had Willa retested for feline leukemia which came back positive. I support the admiral work Animal Kind professes to do. I would have adopted Willa regardless of her medical history. However, the lack of transparency and willful dishonesty infesting this agency is criminal. I will love Willa until she passes but if and when I am healed enough to adopt another cat after her passing- I will be going to the Humane Society. read more

Re:Marie Halls review below:---This also happened to me! AND THEY HAD THE NERVE TO CHARGE US $75 adoption fee for a VERY SICK stray cat! We live an hour away also & made plans to adopt a specific 6 month old cat named Jonah as a companion to our other cat who just lost her partner. The day before I was meeting them halfway to pick up Jonah, I got a call from Animalkind saying that Jonah was suddenly "blind"& further that Jonah was very sick w an upper respiratory". I found it odd they had this cat on their adoption list for a while yet nobody--no vet or volunteer-noticed this cat was blind?? (Do they even bother to do complete physicals on these cats before adoption?? )Hard to believe but Jonah was also suddenly now very sick with an upper respiratory infection. They told me he was now suddenly..."no longer up for adoption", HOWEVER they happened to have a 2 year old cat that they said would work better for me. We agreed and a volunteer met me at a store halfway between my town & theirs after work the next evening. This other cat was in a crate at night so we couldn't really check him out from a dark parking lot in the middle of nowhere. On the ride home we noticed he was coughing & hacking trying to meow with absolutely no voice but we couldn't evaluate him till we got back to our farm. We have done rescue work for decades so we knew what to check out once we got home! When we got him inside where there was light, we were APPALLED at the sight & poor condition of this cat...aside from being sick after contracting Jonah's upper respiratory infection (which was just starting to become symptomatic after 5 days exposure), he was skin&bones...BEYOND EMACIATED & more feral than described. Once we saw how sick he was & called Animalkind, We got the same song & dance from some woman who basically told us to drive an hour out of our way to bring him back there for medical treatment. She clearly had NO IDEA about this adoption, nor was she familiar with this cat. .When I told her this cat was also feral & could not be picked up to crate, she told me to "chase him around with a net".That was it for me!! Anyone with any compassion knows that would only stress out this sick cat even more. Turns out this cat was an emaciated stray they took in only 2WEEKS BEFORE they dumped him on me & further, HE WAS IN THE SAME ROOM WITH JONAH WHO WAS TOO SICK TO ADOPT OUT! In a matter of 14 days, they caught this feral stray, vaccinated him, neutered him (he was still raw & swollen when I got him), left him in a room w another sick cat & then dumped him on me! Anyone with a brain knows that feline respiratory illness is VERY contagious-hence, they should have known to keep this cat another week for observation to make sure he wasn't infected (especially since his body condition was so abhorrently poor)! Instead, they dumped him here & then played dumb when he caught Jonah's snotty drooling hacking upper respiratory! Since I couldn't get him into a crate for transport, & they wouldn't send someone here to get him, I realized I was basically stuck with him, so I paid to treat him with 2 different antibiotics over a 4 week period which is how long it took to get him over this severe respiratory infection!. He arrived here a VERY sick cat!! It took another 6 months to slowly build up his weight & body condition which was HORRIFIC when he arrived. He's now got a forever home here, but I will NEVER recommend this place to anyone, particularly due to a call I got at my home from a very defensive somewhat nasty volunteer only 72 hours later...unsolicited....when she heard thru the grapevine that this cat was sick--she took it upon herself to call me with a most accusatory attitude, stating "...that cat was just fine & healthy when he left"...which he was not! This woman had no facts yet she had the nerve to call me & basically call me a liar....of course I'm sure that was AFTER they cashed my check!! Bottom line is, if you are looking to adopt a cat, go to a place that knows more about feline health care prior to adopting out an animal, and further doesn't hire people who attack the adopting family when Animalkind screws up. We were VERY disappointed in the way this was mishandled! From now on, will go elsewhere when looking to adopt again. read more

This place is iffy at best. You walk in and it wreaks of cat pee, which is expected I suppose, when you have hundreds of cats together in 3 tiny glass cages. I was looking for a kitten that they had posted online. They couldn't find him OR his paperwork, so I chose another kitten. I adopted my cat here, basically so I could save his life. I don't think he would've lived if he had stayed here. The vet checks to make sure your cat isn't sick before you take them home. Mine was sick, for 3 months. Two rounds of amoxicillin, two weeks of eye drops and two weeks of ear drops finally cured him. And he came with fleas, so tack another medication on there. A solid $500+ later and hes better. They offer to give him his rabies shots and neutering, with the adoption. I brought him to get his shots and the lady at the desk looked at me like I was crazy, and asked me to come back tomorrow, which I replied, I live 40 minutes away, I cant come back tomorrow. Then upon receiving his shots, the woman brought a syringe out into the waiting room, where a good 10 people were standing looking at kittens, and she proceeded to stab herself with the syringe by accident. She went and retrieved a new syringe, and administered the shots in the middle of the waiting room. When they went to look for my cats paperwork, they couldn't find it, which seems to be a pattern. Luckily he is micro chipped so they scanned him. I have an appointment tomorrow for him to get fixed, and I will not be taking him there. I did try to do the right thing to call and cancel but the chances of them answering the phone EVER is 0/100. I hope people save the kitties in there, but I do not recommend going back after adopting. read more

Right after my husband and I had moved to Chatham NY .. from living out of the country for a few years, he died suddenly. There I was in a totally new town in NY and a big house with no one to talk to .. not even a pet . When I was better able to make decisions and get on with my life, I went to Animalkind, where I had been a visitor and had stood for many times, outside, looking in at the cats sleeping, playing in the windows .. It is an old Victorian house that was totally renovated into a completely Cat friendly building .. with an in-house vet and surgery upstairs. Every single person I met that worked/volunteered there, was kind and helpful . The lady that runs the place is great ! I am now the "mama" of two cats adopted from Animalkind. A tiny blue kitten that was found in the snow next to its dead mama and an elderly cat that is so gentle and beautiful, I couldn't think of him spending his last days without his own family and home. I have no criticism, no complaints, nothing but praise for Animal Kind and Katrina, the lady that runs the place and the wonderful kind and gentle people who work/volunteer there .. Animalkind takes in homeless,sick, injured and feral cats. It exists by virtue of the dedication,kindness and expertise of its staff and volunteers and the steadfast determination of its director Katrin Hecker to leave no needy animal behind. It is not a government entity and, unfortunately, does not have access to an unlimited supply of money. I have personally witnessed that they do the best that is possible with the resources they have...which translates into saving the lives of thousands of cats and keeping thousands others from starving on the cold streets of our communities. Without Animalkind staff and the volunteers and donors who give them physical and monetary support there can be no Animalkind and no sanctuary for thousands of suffering animals. Government has mostly turned a blind eye...animals don"t vote. We are left with organizations that we believe are providing help and care to feral and abandoned cats but are not. Like the Columbia-Greene Humane Society. They do not accept feral cats. These animals are left abandoned to fend for themselves. Like people some are adept at surviving and some are not. Those who are not are often condemned to starve and freeze to death on the streets of our cities. I have adopted cats from Animalkind that have become excellent pets. Also, over the years, many a stray, feral and injured cat has crossed my path and been taken in by Animalkind. After receiving the appropriate medical care and a little bit of love these previously abandoned and forgotten cats often become great companion animals who deserve a forever home. Animalkind deserves your support and admiration because it provides a caring enviornment for those animals that have been abandoned and forgotten and, as importantly, stands as an example to what we as a community should aspire. read more

After supporting Animalkind for several years with donations, and admiring the good work they do with feral cats, I was ready to make an adoption from them. A disaster! I truly hate to criticize them...they are a group of well-meaning people, their hearts are in the right place...BUT..... The organization has no apparent management, the staff is disorganized and antagonistic towards anyone who tries to adopt and fails to concur with their opinions..... I specifically asked for a male cat; I had visited Animalkind several times and spoken to several staff members and they seemed very helpful....and yet I ended up with what they told me was a neutered male....alas, no, it was a female and sick, as well. When I attempted to return the poor thing I was met with sarcasm and scorn; they continued to insist it was a male...until one of the more professional staff members examined it... There was no mention of a return of the fifty dollar donation I had made (though I certainly would not have taken it) or thanks for the case of cat food I had given. Or an apology for their mistake. Only disrespect and anger. I have been a cat advocate all my life and it pains me to criticize an organization dedicated to cats but I would never recommend Animalkind.....since my unfortunate interaction I have encountered several other people who had similar experiences. The main complaint is that Animalkind adopts out ill animals. Since then I have had a wonderful adoption experience with the Ulster County SPCA and am the happy human companion of a great healthy loving--MALE--cat! read more

We adopted our beloved Inka here in October and they emailed me recently just to check in and make sure all was well. The people at Animalkind are dedicated, caring, and genuinely want the best for both the cats and the adopters. They take the time to match you to your furry soulmate. This is a wonderful story........A feral cat had four kittens in an apartment complex. One of the employees came to me because he knows I feed the cats. They were very small and starting running in the road. I called over ten places to help me. Some never called me back, and some were down right rude! One rescue place told me to stop feeding the cats. I couldn't believe it. I had fostered for Animal Kind in the past and picked them over anyone else. I saw how they worked for over a year in very cramped quarters when their facility burned down. They are all wonderful caring animal lovers. They bathed the kittens, gave them their shots and tested them for everything. They were sick to their stomachs and gave me medicine to take home. I am fostering them, as they just did a BIG rescue of over 100 cats. Animal Kind truly is kind. I hope that every person who reads this will take the time to visit them or donate a dollar. I can not say enough about this wonderful place. Most employees there have many cats they take home to care for. Katrin is a gift from God to the cats and sometimes dogs. Had to surrender a cat here after his owner died, and could not have been more impressed with the staff and volunteers who paid such careful attention to every detail and truly love and care for their cats. They have cats with special needs or other problems that many other shelters will turn away or euthanize. We spent a few hours there and saw how hard they try to keep the place clean and safe for all cats. Any cat-lover should consider donating or adopting from this wonderful organization. You can also just volunteer to come by and spend time with the kitties, some of whom freely roam the building. The volunteers are truly saints. read more

if i could give this 0 stars i would, this place is the worst, we adopted our baby from here and he had something on his ear, we ask what it is (looked like a scab) and the lady tells us oh another cat probably just scratched him, my girlfriend is a vet tech and didn't really believe it but we shrugged it off because we wanted to get him out of there so badly, there was other cats blood in his "cage" or whatever he was in, sick cats everywhere including him which we didn't even know until after we paid and WERE WALKING OUT THE DOOR, flash foreword he his ringworm and we just spent 14 hours deep cleaning our whole house, we have 2 rabbits and another cat who could have it and now the newly adopted cat has to stay in the bathroom until all this is cleared up, another thing that bothered me very much is my girlfriend is a vet tech, she brings him in and 3 doctors with 20+ years experience just look at it and say oh yeah that's definitely ringworm, so we tell animal kind and they have the nerve to basically say they don't believe us, like i wouldn't be calling you if i was lying, worst place ever, i hope all these cats can one day get out of there and go somewhere cleaner cause that was the worst experience of my life and were all having the worst time at home right now because of it, also the people there suck. hope they see this. :) read more

I decided to write my own review because of my strong views on this organization. Somewhere around the end of October 2011, i decided that it was time to adopt my first ever kitten. I knew i wanted a male and if i could find it, i wanted him to be all black. By some recommendations i went into animal kind to find 4 black baby boys in a cage and i immediately fell in love. The people working there were very helpful with my quesitons and concerns. I submitted my application and in less than a week i took home my first bay whom i named Winston. That very same day i decided that Winston needed a brother so i had my mom go back and pick up the last one, Marty. I immediately fell in love for they had their own wonderful personalites. Marty was the frisky one and Winston was my love bug. Sleeping with me and never leaving my side. They both had upper respiratory infections when i got them, which i sort of expected so i got them treated and they got better. As soon as they got ove their upper respiratory infectoins, they both ended up with worms, got that treated. About a week went by and they both seemed to be working up to be healthly little kittens finally. i guess it was the calm before the storm. I noticed that Winston wasn't eating right anymore or drinking as much as he had. So i changed their food thinking maybe that would help and it didnt. One morning i woke up and noticed a bile like substance near their litter box. i have two dogs so i thought maybe one of them was trying to snack on kitty poop and puked up some bile instead so i ignored it. Winston seemed sad, he was very unactive. I notice his belly was really big almost like he was carrying some babies in there. i freaked out worried what this might be so i took him to the vets. The vet took him out of the room to collect a sample from his belly and came back with a huge syringe full of this yellow fluid. Winston had FIP, which is a disease where fluid collects in their belly and there is absolutely no way to treat it or cure it. Broken hearted, i knew what i had to do. I brought Winston home so i could spend just one more night with him and the following day took him to the vets and he was humanely euthanized while i held onto this tiny little baby of mine. I don't think i've ever been so broken hearted. I was at least hopeful that Marty would not hold the same fate, but my hope was shattered when a week later i found that Marty had the same disease and had to humanely euthanize him as well. I did a lot of reasearch on this disease and asked a lot of questions about it at the vet's office and there's only two ways to get this disease. They contract it either as a birth defect or from dirty kennels. Well, the chances of 2 cats in one litter having this are rare, leading me to believe that this was very possibly contracted during their stay at animal kind. There is no test for this so animal kind could not have known. i applaud the organizations intentions, but i also belive that they are failing miserably with their intentions. When you walk into animal kind, the smell is so potent it makes you want to vomit. It's near impossible to manage that many cats in one small space and in my opinion those cats may be better off in the wild where they're not spreading diseases to each other. I'm over the whole situation now that it's been over a year and i have a new kitten that helped to heal my heart. It breaks my heart when i remember how terrible i felt when i had to put those two little babies down after only a month with them . What if a family had adopted them with small children? I am grateful that i was able to give them as much love as possible in that one month they were with me, but i will never again adopt from animal kind. They need to get control of the filth and disease that is going around. So, anybody looking to adopt a cat i would highly recommend staying away from animal kind if you'd like to not have a broken heart or a small wallet! read more
