I can wholeheartedly recommend Caughlin Preschool to any parent looking for a school that is going to genuinely care for their child. Our son started here as an infant, and not once did I ever question the love and care he was receiving. The staff and teachers are fantastic with very little turnover which allowed our son to foster and maintain strong bonds with everyone there from a very early age. It's a good sign when you pick up your kiddo, and they don't want to leave - we lost count of the days that happened very early on! They have great curriculum, we were shocked at some of the things he was coming home and saying or singing, and a fantastic outdoor playground for all ages that they went outside and played in every day. I am extremely disappointed with the care my child has received at Caughlin. My son has hearing loss in one ear, and since he turned two, this daycare has done nothing but discriminate against him due to developmentally appropriate behaviors and a minor speech delay that has improved dramatically. Despite providing them with extensive resources on how to care for a child with hearing loss, they refused to implement any of the suggestions or accommodations. This has only made my son feel like an outsider and a target, which is heartbreaking as a parent. The daycare's lack of empathy and understanding for children with disabilities is clear. My son was penalized for age-appropriate behavior like hitting and kicking, which he doesn't exhibit at home or with friends, and certainly not at Sunday school. This behavior, typical for his age just recently started within the last month. This behavior is age appropriate and was certainly not a continued issue. When asked about how it was happening they could only provide excuses about the teachers, other students and never answered my questions. The communication between teachers is abysmal, and the high turnover rate among staff only exacerbates the issue. There seems to be a lack of commitment to consistent care, and the owner, Joanne, seems to view children as dollar signs rather than individuals in need of genuine care and attention. Teachers are trained, but it doesn't seem to make any difference--there's little to no real progress in creating a nurturing environment. The classroom is chaotic, with 16 toddlers crammed into a small space, leaving no room for meaningful interaction or learning. It feels more like a fishbowl than a place for children to grow, and it is impossible for a child to thrive in this kind of environment. I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere for your child's care. There are plenty of other daycare facilities that are equipped to handle children with special needs or any kind of disability. (A handful of reviews have stated this regarding children with disabilities, learning delays or special needs) This place is just not the right fit and has made what should be a positive experience a stressful and disheartening one for both my child and myself. read more

Caughlin Preschool has been wonderful to our kids over the past two years. The teachers have been incredible loving, making us feel that our kid's are happy and safe each day. Our two year old constantly surprises us with new words/sounds she's learned and can't wait to get to school each morning. It has been several years since my twins had been at this school. I have a set of twins that are now 21. Joanne Taylor Palmer is the owner and runs a horrible shop. Myra Yeargen was a phenomenal director. When my children were there, Joanne was not very involved with the daycare and had more of a hands off approach. Joanne was horrible with my special needs son. My son was in Washoe County School District most of the day and was treated horribly here! One of the teachers at the time, Miss Libby, was also horrible with the kids. (My daughter was in her class and I requested that she be moved immediately). When it comes down to it, Joanne was a horrible person and based on other reviews seems to have a vendetta against kids who may have special needs. ( read other reviews here). The best thing I did was pull my twins. Blue kangaroo, Noah's Ark, The Lion and the Lamb, and Little Hands Learning Center are all way better. Put you child in one of those places. This place might be way better if it had a different owner. read more

You can't leave them just in some daycare, you want them to have a chance to play, learn, and grow. CP has great staff from top to bottom, and a consistent internal community that truly cares about putting the shine on happy kids. We moved our toddler son from a daycare/preschool that was further away to this one since it was closer. We paid an enrollment fee and set him up for 2 days per week. The first day we dropped him off, he was outside putting sand in his mouth, not being supervised. We thought it was a fluke, brought him back. We pick him up the next time and he has snot all over his face. We ask the care providers if they typically just refuse to help kids clean their noses if they're out in the cold and get runny. They said they would help him. We show up the next time to pick him up, now he has both snot and and sand all over his face. We ask why no one helped him, and were told "because we didn't have wipes for him." We did bring wipes for him, the other care provider remembered where they were- but even still, you can't use a tissue? Did they refuse to clean him or change his diaper all day because they didn't know where his baby wipes were? Every single time we dropped him off, the daycare staff was horribly negligent. Toddlers were left outside with almost no supervision in the far corners of the play area, kids had food and snot all over their faces, all trying to use the bathroom while potty training with little to no supervision so getting pee everywhere. It was astounding. We called the school, explained the situation. Not only did they refuse to return the enrollment fee that we paid assuming that our son would receive remotely acceptable care, but they charged us for two weeks, citing the fact that "they require two week notice for cancellation"- apparently, even if they're negligent and refuse to care for the babies and toddlers in their building. I cannot fathom any parent who loves or cares for their child leaving them here. read more

The staff have all been extremely loving, gentle and supportive of my children at all stages (infancy and up). In addition to this, the facility is so clean! I have had at least one of my kids enrolled in Caughlin Preschool for the past 11 years. Teachers come and go, as do they with any preschool- that's the nature of the industry. But what has been a constant is the commitment from the director to ensure that teachest put the needs of the child first, care genuinely and create a safe and nurturing environment where children can thrive. Caughlin Preschool goes above and beyond to ensure that each child feels valued, respected, and supported, and follows a curriculum carefully designed to meet the needs of each individual child. I love how the curriculum is always delivered in a way that is engaging, interactive, and fun. From arts and crafts to music and movement, there is always something exciting happening at this school. Overall, I cannot recommend Caughlin Preschool highly enough. If you're looking for a preschool that will give your child a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning and growth, while allowing them to be silly, have fun and be a kid, this is the place to be. read more

My youngest son was expelled from here. They rely on exclusionary discipline and are not pro-inclusion. I felt like my kid was a price point and not treated like a young, developing child. The teachers are nice but the directors and owner should be ashamed of their reputation amongst the community. I had 2 Board Certified Behavior Analysts willing to go in to consult and support 3x a week and the director turned them away and expelled my son effective the very next day. Post-expulsion I enrolled my youngest son at St. Albert's Child Development Center. They charged half the price of Caughlin and surprise surprise....he never had any problems in his new school. read more

I will always be in support of Caughlin Preschool and highly recommend sending your children to school here! I have two boys, aged 5 and 1, that go here. My oldest started at age 2 and my youngest started at 3 months old.. My sisters and I have consistently sent all our children here, a total of 7 kids, because of our confidence in this school! I am positive Caughlin has had a huge impact on each of their learning accomplishments and growth! It is clear that both Myra and Tammy are passionate about what they do and they care for the children and families. They are open to discussing concerns or needs with my family. And they are very involved in all the childcare, they don't just sit in the front office and do nothing. I also need to mention their pre-K teacher, Mr Brandon. He is the best teacher my oldest son has had so far. He genuinely cares for the kids learning and I have noticed such a change in my son's academic growth since Mr Brandon started at Caughlin. I think these folks tried pretty hard to educate our challenging bilingual child. We know how difficult our child can be, but *in our child's native language* our child is normal enough - still, not brilliant in pre-school or anything. That, and the fact that we were about to pull our child out anyway because he wasn't LEARNING anything from them; that's the only reason I'm giving anything above a zero. What I didn't like was: 1. They seemed to goggle "Autism symptoms" when they had enough of our Childs misunderstanding/ignoring of them. Then they brought in a social worker to prove with a laundry list of symptoms that he just couldn't be taught. We promptly proved them wrong with the help of the social worker at that first meeting. 2. They built an entirely bogus case just to get rid of us; but if they had kindly asked us to LEAVE we would have done so - no need to try to say our child is essentially retarded..... Just because someone speaks a different language and ignores you (admittedly not a good situation) doesn't mean they are a moron. In that regard those of us who are educated outside the local area here - well I kind of got what I deserved I guess expecting less local Reno ignorance. I blame myself for that too - another reason we gave them 2 stars. 3. Finally, they used the social worker as a prop to kick us out. After we proved them wrong - they cleverly removed the social worker from the process and made their own bogus case behind both of our backs - then shoved it down our collective throats at a final "meeting" which was just a written condemnation and final trial and terminal judgment of our child. That final judgment was a recommendation for our child to receive special education from the county. Being open minded I called the special education department the next day. They asked me what the symptoms were that he needed their help. I read off their verdict on our child to the special education manager on the phone - but they responded that they cannot help because they do not teach English nor do they think his case warrants their special education help. Needless to say, we didn't trust our non-English speaking child to their school for help only to be mis-directed into special ed. So who's rules are we following here? Theirs. But they're lucky we're not the litigious type, this is a pretty open and shut case of defamation and exaggeration towards an innocent child for their convenience. I have a Psychology degree and my wife has a Legal Degree...but they did try and our child is not perfect at all. But we understand, this is just a business that prefers to cater to working moms who have *kids that don't need any further education* More like day care than school with a child to teacher ratio of 10+ On an emotional level that I'm trying to stay away from here; we're not naive enough to think this isn't a for profit enterprise but - I think "pre-schools" need to consider the level of TRUST we're put into their institutions when we hand off an imperfect and vulnerable child into their care. We knew darn well this was not going to be easy or quick; our child has challenges. We're comfortable enough not to need schooling for our schedules - my wife is a stay at home mother. This was strictly for education, mostly social and English language skills. What we really wanted was some help. But we love our child and are willing to put the work into this. For them to categorize and judge a struggling child for their cold business purposes only brings up one word....cruelty. Or ignorance if you want to look on the bright side. But neither will help your child grow and advance the way a place called a "school" is ultimately supposed to, right? Again, a frank conversation, perhaps one to one, where they said "off the record, we're not the place to teach children English" would have saved us all a lot of time here. We thought we were putting our child into the best school in the area - but it turns out it's just the *best school if your kid is advanced enough for the school not to have to work too hard* If the child is not *and we admit out child is behind* because we insisted on a bilingual upbringing (which has big hurdles and maybe even some regrets now) then they "have a wait list of 50 students!" and they'll get rid of your child and get on with an easier life for themselves! Again, there is nothing wrong with this school if your kid is 100% and ready to go - but if not: prepare for your child to be judged, labeled, humiliated, and ultimately: expelled. read more

Do not send your kid here if they have any disabilities or learning stubbles. My son was kicked out after 7 days for not adjusting accordingly. He is autistic and the assistant director told me my sons behaviors were " too autistic" for them to handle. He is on the lowest spectrum of autism. They are a scam. And there is little to no diversity here. I saw one black kid through out the facility and no Hispanic kids. read more

I have been extremely happy with everything about Caughlin Preschool. I owned a child care center for 23 years so my daughter and son-in-law asked me to help them choose the right place for their two boys. Of the 5 preschools we looked at in the area, Caughlin was by far my favorite. My initial impression was that it was a clean, safe, and happy environment. After almost four years, I still feel that way. My grandsons look forward to school. The teachers are upbeat, energetic, and interested in each and every child. My oldest grandson went through a stage where he was quite a handful. He was sent home a couple of times because of his behavior. The staff dealt with him firmly but with kindness. They were very patient and made a point to bring a team together to help work through it. He was soon thriving. Now we are continually told how well he is doing. The parent who left a two star review clearly doesn't realize how hard it is when one unruly child disrupts things for all of the others. As a former preschool teacher I feel that it is sometimes not fair or safe for the majority of the kids to have to contend with an uncontrollable child. I highly recommend Caughlin Preschool. Your child will be happy and will learn a lot about being kind, sharing with others, and even come home understanding words like evaporation and condensation! read more

We absolutely love Caughlin Preschool! We live in South Reno and it takes us approximately 30 min to get our boys to school every morning. But the school absolutely worth the drive. Top notch from the owner throughout the entire staff. From toddler to private kindergarten, all the teachers are great! If you're OK with your child being treated as 'one of our income sources', send your child here. Teachers are not there to nurture the kids but to just watch the kids do whatever they want, the classroom and bathroom areas are always so dirty, and the directors are plain rude and never say hi or bye when kids walk through the front desk. The energy level here is very low. They say the tuition is higher than others because of teacher quality, but I honestly didn't see any constructive curriculum being covered here. When I complained, they said it's a group care so they can't cover everything. Yet I am getting weekly curriculum update email as if they do all of the listed things properly. They're so fake. There are so many better childcare facilities that are cheaper and welcoming in Reno. Think twice and do not send your kid here. read more

Heartbreaking, to sum it up in one word. Imagine if you were given a list of 4 things to improve on in 2 weeks, or else, be evicted. Now, imagine if that list was designated towards a 4 year old. List includes: stay in designated space, follow directions, walk/not run indoors and show no aggression. I'm no child expert, but I do work adult inpatient behavioral health and I don't know any 4 year old that exhibits mastery of the above list. This is the expectation written in a letter by Joanne Palmer Owner/Director. My son has attended this school for about 3 years. The letter comes at a surprise and without progression. It went from notes in his lunch box to a 2 week notice. Also, the list exhibits the faculty's failure to form a "foundation for a lifetime of learning" as indicated in their website. Moreover, the way Caughlin Preschool handled this matter was insensitive to the child. My son is very aware that he cannot go back to his school. He feels ashamed and it dramatically lowered his self-esteem. We removed him from the school immediately, as the expectations were unrealistic and sudden. It feels that they didn't want him there and the decision was already made. To any parents considering this preschool, beware that Caughlin will gladly collect the tuition, but if your child requires more attention than babysitting, expect a cold, sudden eviction with no thought of your child's feelings. read more

Our son has been going to Caughlin since he was 8 weeks. He loves it. They were very supportive of me coming to breastfeed every 2 hours for a year. All of his teachers have been great. Any time I had a concern, Myra and Tammy always listened. Myra is wonderful. I know that when I talk with her she is listening and my concerns are taken care of immediately. We love Caughlin Preschool and you definitely get what you pay for here. We have had no issues and everyone here is amazing with children and it was great to know that many teachers have a background in education. Our daughter loves it here! She has excelled in every aspect of her life. She is learning so much and it amazes me every day what new things she's learned. You truly can't ask for a better school. In response to an upset parent about their child being asked to leave due to scratching another child: (people should know when reading your review how biased it was) I witnessed first hand their young child physically aggressive with the other kids. The child in fact hit my child in front of me. When I said no no, the kid still continued to hit her. I had to pick her up in order for the kid to stop hitting her. I also witnessed him being aggressive with other kids. Clearly something needed to be done. The young child was aggressive and hurting children. Bottom line. To blame the school for the kids behavior is ridiculous. They could say that his behavior was due to your parenting. Either way something needed to be done for the safety of the other kids. I for one was very happy the school was protecting mine and the other children's safety. Thank you Caughlin! read more

So far everything has been wonderful for our son at caughlin preschool. We walk in the door and he gets excited to go play with his friends. The teachers are very nice and rave about how great he is and really seem to care. His first few days were very hard for me and they sent me text messages with photos to help ease my mind. Caughlin preschool sounded terrific when we were looking to put our 2 and a half year old son back in daycare after a year staying home with mom. We had informed the toddler director, Mayra, that our son had an issue with being overly physical with his peers. He was an attendee there for all of four weeks, when I received the FIRST call from Joanne, the owner, that he had scratched another child and I needed to pick him up. My wife and I had taken time the day before; when we heard a parking lot rumor that people were unhappy WITH OUR 2 YEAR OLD'S BEHAVIOR AT DAYCARE; to meet with Joanne. She told us that she had not heard of any worrisome incidents and she would "definitely call us to discuss any problems, should they have any." She also took the time to inform us that in the event of any behavioral issues, they work very closely with a social worker through the state, who would evaluate any problem kids and come up with a course of action. I was told that "parents are complaining and threatening to leave." In the policies and procedures available on their website, as well as handed to us when we enrolled, it states, "Repeated misbehavior that results in frequent classroom disruption will warrant a parent, child, teacher, and administrator intervention meeting. A behavior plan will be devised and implemented at this meeting. We believe in the importance of collaboration between school and family to create the most effective plan for your child. Caughlin Preschool shall make every effort to help your child succeed and/or improve a behavior or issue." This sounds very good, but unfortunately, it's just dog and pony show. First of all, there is no state social worker/psychology person available. I asked about that, as I was appalled that the previous day there was nothing wrong at all, and today I was being told my son is no longer welcome at his daycare. Joanne said that they would not be able to get someone in to evaluate our son for 4-6 weeks, and they could not wait that long. Joanne said that our son should have been in an older classroom, but there were no open spaces in the next oldest class. The child closest in age to our son in his (then) current class was 8 months younger than him. All the while, Joanne and Mayra were insinuating that our son may need full time dedicated care, that he may have a serious problem. Joanne told me, in front of Mayra when I picked up my son at 12:15pm on a Thursday, that "Caughlin Preschool failed my son.... without the resources necessary to give him the care he deserves..." Anyway, there was no following of their "policies and procedures," I received ONE phone call from Joanne and was told our son was expelled. I was also told in this exit meeting with Joanne and Mayra that "we are a private institution, we don't receive the funding that state run institutions do and don't have to follow any policies that we do not wish to." Something was definitely amiss - Joanne met me when I came to pick my son up with an envelope with a handwritten check for 1 week's tuition as well as the following 2 weeks which they had prematurely drafted from our account. I do think that the teachers there, although young and most likely not possessing a teacher's education, are wonderful. Its too bad that they are stuck in such a rotten institution. We were given a 3 day weekend, without notice, to find replacement child care for our 2 and a half year old. I don't believe that is any standard procedure, it is certainly inconsiderate and unprofessional. What kind of care provider and mother would treat anyone like that, especially a paying customer? Furthermore, during early hours, and more significantly late afternoon/evening hours, Caughlin Preschool does not at all adhere to their own caretaker-child ratios. As children leave, they start combining the younger classes. More often than not, we would pick him up during the 4-5 o'clock hours and there would be anywhere from 12-17 children running around in the snow outside, supervised by one overworked babysitter, who had to oversee a bigger crowd than social services even allows, as well as greet parents and summarize their children's day, along with tolerate Mayra's "coordination," which didn't put on the most professional show of authority, and really appeared strictly for show. Like the policies and procedures. Our son now attends University Preschool, and we have no behavioral issues-It is a much more personable place, and what it lacks in facilities and electronic check ins, it makes up for 10fold in communication and care. Our child went from crying and not wanting to go to "school", to being excited to go in at University. I would NOT recommend Caughlin Preschool to any parent. read more

On the 4th day, they told me they were going to give him another 4 days to adjust and if he didn't, then I should look elsewhere. So, they were going to give a 2 years old kid only 8 days to adjust to daycare. It was his first time in daycare. They didn't mention any behavioral problems. He is a relaxed kid overall. As soon as they said they were going to give him only another 4 days to adjust, I stopped taking him there. I don't want my kid to be watched by people who don't want to give him time to adjust to daycare. We took our refund and are taking our money elsewhere. We have told the day care places we have toured what happened here and they were all very surprised. read more

We have a daughter currently at Caughlin Preschool. We love everything about this preschool from the friendly directors, the caring teachers, the cute classrooms, to the cleanliness of the building. Our daughter has made leaps and bounds while attending Caughlin. She quickly picked up what was being taught in the classroom and has brought it home to share with us. As an elementary teacher myself, I was very hesitant to commit to just any preschool because I know what it takes to run a professional school. Caughlin has exceeded our expectations and more.
