Kristine and John Woodward, owners of the Woodward Gallery have a keen eye for talent and collaborating shows. It is always a true pleasure to attend events but more importantly to learn interesting facts, and to meet incredible established as well as emerging artists. The latest event in the new space downtown was classy, fun and incredible to see. The Woodward gallery is tasteful and genuine. They are true asset to the art world and NYC scene.

They also allowed people into their office during Ruddell's opening, so people could view the works in their (a few Eric Zener and Darryl Zudeck paintings!!!). The gallery is centrally located on the ground floor in Chelsea. Natural light and unimpeded wall space provide ideal viewing of photographs ranging from small photobooth prints to monumental museum-sized pieces. Respect for the medium is immediately apparent. The stable of represented artists is lengthy but includes Mickalene Thomas and Julius Shulman. Recent gallery-based exhibitions and presentations at Untitled and the Armory include recognizable mainstay artists like Larry Sultan, Sharon Core and Ori Gersht; Rachel Perry and Hellen van Meene, too many talents to list. Jared Bark has been shown in the gallery after many years of exposure limited to only collectors in the know, prompting a re-examination by curators and art historians. Focused exhibiting of artists newer to the scene, but no less important, like Zanele Muholi, document socially important concepts of race, gender and sexuality in her native South Africa. History and aesthetics perfectly merge through the gallery's own lens. The Gallery should be a must-see at any tour of Chelsea. Likewise, it's a gallery to seek out during the important art fair weeks in Miami and NYC. On a personal observation, the entire staff is professional and polite. The namesake, Yancey Richardson, loves what she does and her genuine passion is immediately apparent. She is easily engaged in a conversation about the artists, art works, the process and the medium. Similarly, Director, Sarah, is equally happy to provide information and quick to provide insight and information. I've enjoyed seeing the gallery exhibitions and art fair presentations; and, personal acquisitions have been easy and exciting experiences.

I never want someone to be turned off art by the attitude of some supercilious gallerist. Yancey Richardson is exactly the kind of rude, cold place to discourage a new collector. I was in there last week, and the receptionist (who was definitely NOT busy) does not even respond to "hello". It reminds me a bit of the restaurant in LA Story, only less chatty and they didn't run my credit. As far as I know.

Cheim and Reade is new to me but I instantly liked the set up of the space. It is on the edge of 25th street in Chelsea. And there is a simple sign baring the name of the gallery. When walking in there's a small reception desk and a shelf with art books. Then a small room with a cool lay out of some McGee's more sculpture work. I loved his use of found objects, color and especially texture. In the larger room there was a tiny built side room that appeared like a small town shop. When you enter the room it's reminiscent of a teenage boy's club house. A variety of art is on the wall and there's a shelf of knick knacks. Is this the room that represents the brain of the artist? That's the beauty about art, a lot of it is interpretation. There was a back room where the giant stack of surfboards leaves you in awe. It appears as a giant stair case. Absolutely stunning. The show is up until February 17th and is worth the trip to the crevices of Chelsea. To get an intro to McGee's work I recommend watching the documentary "Beautiful Losers".

The 21st Street location is bigger than the old space, but has the same vibe. The last Bonakdar Gallery exhibit I saw was an awesome Gillian Wearing show. The gallery has since expanded to Los Angeles and features an impressive roster of artists, including Olafur Eliasson, Tomas Saraceno and Ernesto Neto. Highly recommended!
