This alternative to the big electronic stores with tacky signs is both a superb substitute and a nice place to shop. As the name suggests their specialisation is audio so you won't find much else here. I love the set up though, with speakers and sound systems arranged carefully throughout the former residential house the store calls home. They also have a bunch of second hand stuff that's in great condition. The second hand items are listed on their website, prices and all, so you can conveniently suss it out online before trekking over to the store. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the market for something new to burst your eardrums. read more

Just experienced the worst customer service of my entire life... Visited the store today to check out a replacement CD player and listen to one or two. The guys phone manner was a bit rude and short and I figured he was possibly just not good on the phone, well I could not be more wrong He was what can only be described as belligerent and acted like he we doing me a favour having the shop open. When I asked if I could listen to a player he said "oh sure that will be good/fun for you but realistically not what I want to be doing on Easter Saturday..." When I asked how I was meant to decided what CD player to buy he said that reading reviews on forums was all I should be doing to choose my audio gear. I wish I had recorded the conversation as I keep thinking I am exaggerating it in my head, but sadly I am not. And to think his shop stocks high end gear like Arcam, NAD, Naim any of which I would have walked out with today. I could go on but I have wasted enough of my life dealing with that place. Short version... just go anywhere else rather. read more

The customer service is so bad i am perplexed as to who actually buys stuff here. When i walked in the shop attendant was having a chat with his mate and looked at me, then continued to chat. The shop was a mess with stuff all over the floor it looked like a storage area. The guy eventually came over to talk to the only customer (me) and i mentioned i was looking for a 2ch amp. He asked me how much i wanted to spend and looked dissapointing at my modest but sufficient budget. He pointed me to a few models he had within budget and thats where the fun began: This amp is $$$ but the price is going up. How much power does it put out? The power doesnt matter. It does to me, so how much? 50w per channel. And at what level of distortion? It doesnt matter, low distortion amps use negative feedback. If you want distortion specs go to Todds Hifi. Yeah but are we talking 1% or 10% distortion at 50w? There will be no talk of distortion in this store! Then he walks off. Then i left read more

Now I don't know if it was because he just didn't like the look of me or if he really was having a bad day but I just experienced the worst service in my life! I live in the Paddington area and have been past the shop many times peering through the window at the hi spec audio gear strewn about. It was always a dream of mine to own something that was being sold there. Now I'm in a wage bracket to be able to afford a nice valve amp so I decided to actually go in and ask if I could listen to one. "How can I help you?" "I'd like to listen to a valve amp to get an idea of the 'valve' sound" "Well I'm not going to set one up for you" "Oh,...." "I'm just too busy, I haven't got time!" "Uhh, okay?, I just thought you might have a system set up that I could hear, that's all" "Well I don't" "Sorry, I didn't mean to push you" "Oh, you won't be able to push me!" "Uhhh, right then..." "You can have a look around" at which point I walked out... I don't know if that's just someone having a bad day, or elitist bulls**t, but no thanks Caxton Audio, I'll go elsewhere. read more

I had a very pleasant experience shopping at Caxton Audio. I left a voicemail after hours describing what I was looking for. The owner did research on his own and was able to advise me very clearly on the best equipment to fit my needs. The price for the equipment was very reasonable for a high-quality product, and he clearly explained installation, gave me a free hookup cable that any other store would definitely have charged me for, and offered me further support if I ran into any trouble during installation, which I did not. The owner was very pleasant to deal with, and I felt really good about supporting this local shop. This kind of expertise and personal attention is rare to find at the larger big box stores, and I will definitely return to Caxton Audio when the time comes for me add to my audio setup. read more

This place is woeful, I'm astounded that such a poor business can exist. The man that runs and staffs the shop is downright rude. He would not give me any advice on my purchase and even looked down on me for "not knowing". He even had the gall to bitch and complain about previous customers who hadn't made a purchase - I wonder why! Avoid this place and shop literally anywhere else, I guarantee it cannot be worse than here. read more

I can empathise with Adrian's experience as this was the worst customer service experience of my life - it happened today. The sales person was helping a customer and I offered to wait, however they said they would be a while. I explained that I needed to return a faulty product purchased end December 2014. I was welcomed with "what makes you think you can come in here and return something after 3 months?" ....it was quickly downhill from there. When confronted in such an aggressive way the quick retort is to refer Australian Consumer law - something that was brought to the fore by the sales person's nasty, accusatory demeanor. Before I had time to finish my explanation of my problem and why I was not happy to accept their solution to swap the power cable transformer this person made a phone call to their supposed solicitor to check their obligation. They then argued with me and angrily offered a refund on the item but not on the cables that were an accessory to the item. They then continued their barrage exclaiming they did not need customers like me and that they would give me a refund on the item only. He then told me to sell the cables on eBay! He then turned and asked the other customer in the shop if they were a solicitor. I was astounded at the treatment, expressed my disappointment at the absolute contempt this person showed a customer. I remained calm, I took the refund on the item. The other customer left the shop. The drama continued with this person telling me to get out and never come back, he attacked me personally, made slurs at my character and then told me to leave or he would call the police. I asked to discuss the transaction, he said I was a bully, he felt threatened. Complete rubbish! The cherry on top came on the way out of the shop when he called me a "f***ing a**hole". This person kept their $70 cable sale, gave me a refund for a relatively low cost item, lost me as a customer, lost another customer in the process. All due to their own angry, arrogant behaviour - not fit anywhere in society let alone in a specialty retail store. read more

David offers genuine service - as soon as I walked in I felt at home - 2 hours later and I walked out with 3 Audiolab components that have opened up music in my house like never before. read more

I've been an audio enthusiast for more than 30 years and have owned various brands of high quality hi-fi audio equipment. I love learning about the engineering of audio equipment, as well as listening to wonderful music on high quality gear. Since moving to Australia just over a year ago, I have visited several good audio stores in Brisbane and Sydney but I consider Caxton Audio to be unlike any other. From my first meeting with David, the owner and operator of the store, I have been impressed by his detailed knowledge of audio and his friendly, relaxed but direct manner. David can offer expert advice if needed, or if you already know what you want, he can simply let your ears do the work. David knows what he is talking about but he doesn't engage in the numbers driven sales talk you get in some stores. The store itself is unlike most audio stores. It's very low key and free of marketing aids or fancy decor. There is a lot of interesting audio gear and some comfortable seating crammed into a few modest sized rooms. Assorted boxes and cables lend it the atmosphere of the private listening space of an audio enthusiast. The brands stocked range from modestly priced but good quality, through to some true high end gear, all listed on the store's website. David also sells quality used equipment and various cables, interconnects and accessories. Shopping at Caxton Audio is very low pressure and relaxed. If the item you want is not in the store or time doesn't permit un-boxing and setting up, David will order it or arrange a suitable time for a demonstration. In my dealings with David, he has always been patient, honest and happy to oblige any reasonable request. I have read the negative reviews on this site and they seem neither fair nor honest. Whether you're an audio enthusiast like me or simply someone looking for quality audio at reasonable prices, and you prefer to deal with an audio enthusiast rather than a target-driven salesman, Caxton Audio is well worth a visit. read more

The negative reviews I have read here surprise me, because I have found the man who runs, and possibly owns Caxton Audio, to be most helpful. He is aware that as a pensioner that I'm never going to be a big spender, yet he has made it possible through his generous terms of payment and keen pricing, for me to put together an Audiolab/Wharfedale CD player system with which I am absolutely delighted. I have found him both respectful and courteous, and happy to answer even the most basic hifi questions. One has the feeling that if those disgruntled would-be customers who have written negative revews had approached him with the same level of respect that I'm confident he would have shown them, then their views of him would be very different. And one also wonders at the kind of person who would feel compelled to vent their spleen in writing when it seems neither of them actually had dealings with the Caxton Audio man. Both went away from the place miffed, and it seems the cause of their upset was simply the fact that the CA man didn't fall in supplication at their feet. There, there, chaps, you'll get over it, and by the way, next time you're in Paddington, follow the signs to the children's playground. Donald Hogg, Red Hill read more

My Quad 988 speaker needed a repair to the treble panel I contacted caxton audio who is a Quad agent in Brisbane. David the owner was happy to do the repair and charged me a very reasonable price. He was a pleasure do deal with and needless to say honest and reliable. There are others in Brisbane who may have the ability to replace a panel but they have no idea of how to repair an existing panel, replacement panels cost $600.00 each my repair came to less than half of that figure. So if you love listening to your Quad electrostatic speakers and if they ever need a repair David is the only person you should contact read more

I have been a satisfied customer for 25 years, if you are serious about producing a realistic music performance in your home, let your ears be the judge, not distortion figures and power ratings. David has a lot of technical knowledge and experience and has hand built superb tube amplifiers, pre amplifiers and speakers for the 'Sound Reference' label. If you place your trust in David's over 40 years experience, he will help you build and upgrade a good system over time. I started with a basic system I could afford and through trades and upgrades, have built a very satisfying music system. read more
