But after awhile, it just wasn't economical for my Dad to pay utilities, upkeep, and insurance as glorified Air BnB for his adult children. With Dad's agreement, I took the lead in selling the house, while my Sister managed the large task of clearing everything out. As this wasn't the house we grew up in, there was very little emotion involved in letting it go. At the recommendation of the HOA President, I chose Patty Meese of Friedrich Iowa Realty, who my Dad already knew from previous community volunteer work. As my Dad can sometimes be a little tentative, his comfort level with Patty was a big plus. My Sister liked her too. I enjoyed working with Patty, even thought it was only in person at select times, as I live in Northern Nevada. My Sister and Dad helped pick up the slack with Patty and in the end we sold the house at over asking and relatively quickly. I thought she was very attentive and professional within the central scope of selling the house. However, I do think that a hail storm-related roof repair issue involving the HOA could have been managed better, starting with the fact that I was notified at least a full month after the fact. Once the house was listed, the next phase was when a number of chatting neighbors would invite themselves in to the Open Houses and tell any prospective buyers (who would listen) multiple versions of the "true" story. I've never been part of a sale where house showings turned into what seemed like a neighborhood scrum. That resulted in a "few" unnecessary phone calls to knock down the here say. That was on the agents to control the situation in the house at the time. The subsequent HOA feud (Dad shared his emails) regarding the issue and the often poorly executed insurance company coordination was above any agent's pay grade. However, I found that I should have been given better information all around to best advise my Father. In the end, my Dad took it in stride, even though I feel that the check he had to write post closure (and repair completion) was higher than it should have been. The icing on this cake was the HOA President agreeing with my assessment that their Board decision threw my Dad (who was HOA Treasurer for years) under the bus. Would I use Patty again? Absolutely, as she got the house sale done at better than our price. It was a unique externality that turned a part of this process pear shaped. And in hindsight, I should have been more physically present and better prepared and engaged to set (and execute) some of the parameters of the sale.

Here's my list of everything that caused me problems they either refused…read moreto fix or were in need of replacements: 1) microwave stopped working and they refused to replace it 2) if you like your apartment to be the temp you set the thermostat to; never move into this place, i would set the temp to 65° and it would easily be 81-82°in my room and 75-80° in the living room 3) the second bedroom is a sad excuse for a "room" and ALL the heating and cooling goes there, so the rest of the apartment was always boiling while only one of the rooms felt subzero. 4) pet rent (self explanatory exploitation) 5) got charged $800 for "excessive decorations" at the end of my lease for a paint job AFTER an $800 DEPOSIT. 6) neighbors complained about noise at 6pm on a Wednesday and the landlords gave us a referral. (we were operating WITHIN Ames noise ordinance laws.) 7) hallways ALWAYS reek. 8) tenants came forward about their bikes being stolen 9) my roommate and many other tenant's cars were broken into and they refused to adequately deploy resources to make the complex safer. 10) the keypad on the door stops working when it's below freezing or above 95° most of the time. That's so fun when you're freezing or boiling while holding heavy groceries and trying to get into your overpriced apartment!!! 11) told me if we moved out early we would receive discounted rent 11 continued) LIED 12) neighbors throw parties constantly 13) pieces of the counter and trim fell off with 0 resistance 14) the kitchen sink leaks and mold is growing in the cabinets because the plumbing is terrible 15) Wi-Fi is slow and frequently crashes while trying to do something as simple as classwork 16) there was a MASSIVE hole from the shower head where mold was growing that maintenance refused to acknowledge or fix. 17) they constantly send out texts that they're doing pest control because it's impossible to keep the mice, rats, cockroaches, centipedes, and bugs out of the complexes. 18) HUGE hornets nests everywhere 19) landscaping is LOUD and EARLY (around 4-6am) and so is trash day.

For a studio with storefront windows and door, the heat was really good in the wintertime. It comes with a dishwasher and stacked washer/dryer in the bathroom as well. Maintenance was quick and attentive to any needs we had (the ceilings were lofted, so we needed help changing lights.) The office staff was always so kind, I can't remember the property manager's name, but she was always on the ball. I guess my only complaint would be their landscaping crew, they were a bit reckless, my doormat was ran over a couple times by the lawn mower which was a little startling. I would recommend Haverkamp properties.

The rent is pretty high for college students. Not super affordable. I also go in to visit friends…read moreoften and it smells like crap in the stairwells. They smell like sour milk and weed. The stairwells are not well taken care of at all. There's rotting ranch on the ground and dust everywhere. Regular stairwells I go in to see often filled with random substances on the ground and trash everywhere. They'll sit there for weeks without being cleaned. It's been cleaned once or twice throughout this whole year. The rooms are nice, the common areas are pretty gross though.

Although the location may not be on campus, it is right next to Jack Trice making for some good times in the fall. The management team has come a long way since when I first got here and currently the management team is really helpful and puts the residents first. This fall will be my 3rd year living here and I recommend it to everyone looking for an apartment.
