Cedar Market is a Middle Eastern food store that I try to frequent every time I'm in town. They have a lot of different breads from Sami's Bakery in Tampa, canned goods, refrigerated items, and fresh produce that are difficult to find where I live. They carry one of my favorite foods of all time, thyme pie, which is a pita topped with zatar seasoning, a blend of thyme leaves and sesame seeds, that is addictive. They have a variety of olives, fresh hummus and tabouli, and a wonderful selection of fresh baklavas and other sweets. The refrigerated selection includes cheeses, other dairy items, some Middle Eastern preparations, and other things I look at and wish I knew how to prepare. If you're in the area, definitely stop by for something interesting and delicious. If you're not in the area and crave Middle Eastern food, make it a destination. Great place to find Middle Eastern essentials! They have everything you'd need- pickled vegetables, hummus, baba ganoush, za'atar, pita, ma'amoul, fresh olives, spinach pies, frozen goods...and the list goes on. From my research, Cedar Market appears to be an institution in the area. A small specialty ethnic grocer, offering Middle Eastern products and foods. Sadly, I have been to other similar markets in Brandon and Tampa that have a larger, cleaner, more organized, cheaper, and larger assortment than Cedar. However, for the sake of being convenient, Cedar can be great in a pinch. There is a deli counter with a menu for items like falafel, gyro, babaganoush, and other deli lunch style plates that can be made to order. I was looking for already made falafel and babaganoush to purchase by the piece or pound, but they do not have. There are 2-3 booth seats along the left wall for dine-in purposes. The front of the store states that they have organic produce. However, on a Saturday morning, the only produce I witnessed was two pieces of zucchini in the cooler. No other produce anywhere to be found. That was definitely a bummer for families coming here that would like the convenience of a one-stop-shop. In the refrigerated section, they had a few types of cheese that did not have the price labelled. We were told at the register that it is by the pound, so we purchased some halloumi cheese to fry at home, instead of paying $11.99 for it at a restaurant. Seriously, I was hoping that they would have more prepared foods in the case, instead of inside the deli cooler. Because there were two employees at the register that were very busy. There are some meats, but they are brine-packed, raw, and super expensive. It would be awesome to just come in and pick-up items for a meal, but that is not an option. The deli counter only had a few things for this busy time of the week and day. There are about eight different kinds of olives offered in the deli case, as well as two sizes of hummus, a small pile of tabbouleh salad, and some loosely wrapped stuffed grape leaves. I was afraid to buy some of the grape leaves because they appeared that they would fall apart if I bit them. There were only two kinds of pale baklava offered in an acrylic case, next to the register. The dry goods selection has seen better days, with some of the bottles turned upside down on the floor by children walking around. Oh Cedar Market. I just discovered you last month... This place is one of those legit small ethnic grocery stores. And it's packed with all kinds of cool stuff I don't see in grocery stores normally (or maybe my convenient grocery store is in an old fart area where everything is generic). Spices. Lots of them. Varieties of interesting teas. Crazy selection of juice (reminded me of my recent-ish international adventure) in the refrigerated section. Homemade things like hummus (which isn't full of garlic) and pastries in the deli case. Plenty of other things I have no idea what they're for or how they're used. The last time I went in I got a thing of hummus and some hibiscus teabags for about $5. Time before that I got lunch (a wrap made on pita from Sami's bakery over in Tampa) and a bag of red lentils for dirt cheap. The owner is really nice and his son (I think) was super polite. Also, I kinda love wandering in and hearing the random conversations in Arabic with some of the customers. read more

Love this place. Great stock of Mediterranean and middle eastern groceries. You can even get candy trays which are given from guests to hosts whenever there are dinners. Someone made the comment that the bread wasn't made in house: the bakery it's made from is actually made by a relative of theirs that owns Sami's in Tampa. So yes, it is "in house." This little market is in my top 5 favorite places to shop in St Petersburg, even though they offer a very niche inventory. I am a Lebanese boy, and everything I need to make all the food I grew up on, I can find here. They have an awesome selection of spices, bottles of oils, beans and legumes, rice, sauces, etc... They also have ready made hummus, stuffed grape leaves, tabouli salad, olives, and various baklava. Not to mention fresh pita bread and some frozen specialty items. I never took a strong interest in my ethnic culinary history. I didn't met my maternal grandfather, a short dark man who ran a Lebanese market in Shrewsbury, MA, and only a few of his national dishes carried forward into the kitchen of my childhood. I regret this when I walk into a place like the Cedar Market, because there are stories and branches of the family tree winding through the hundreds of Middle Eastern products on the shelves. There are spices that I've never heard of that would season brilliant and savory dishes I don't know how to make. There are also the culinary emigres - the falafels, the hummuses, baklava - those snacks whose flavors are accessible enough to appeal to international palates, though they're still presented here with more character than you'd get at any publix. Mostly, there's the realization that I'll never be able to teach myself all the ways of my forefathers, comforted by the knowledge that the Cedar Market has the raw materials, and that I'll try no matter what. read more

I think that Cedar Market is the best Lebanese Market in all of Florida!! I have certain dietary restrictions due to high blood pressure, and my doctor tells me that I need to reduce sodium in my diet. My wife was stopping by Cedar Market to pick up some of their wonderful "tabouleh" that they make only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and I asked her to try to get some of their eggplant "baba ghanouj" with the lowest sodium possible. She wasn't really sure what to do, so she talked with the owners of the market. They called me back at least three times in the next 15 minutes to make sure that they were doing exactly what I wanted. When my wife came home she gave me three cans of baba ghanouj with less than 4% sodium RDA per serving (unbelievably low!). This was the most wonderful thing I can imagine. OMG I'm SOOOO happy my mom found this place. She and her boyfriend were hosting a middle eastern dinner to welcome my husband and I to the area. Because she wanted to make it as authentic as possible, she found this place to get baklava and some special spices, as well as frozen falafel that were actually pretty great! Since she had such success, we decided to see what they offered. I have been more into making dishes my husband loves from the middle east and since we haven't found a knafeh place nearby, I wanted to have my hand at making it myself. We got everything I needed plus a couple of tips from the owner and his wife. (The knafeh turned out PERFECTLY!) We also got labneh and some cheese pies as well as some chocolates. Thankfully Cedar Market has everything we are looking for and their canned goods and spices are much cheaper than grocery stores like Publix. Their pita is baked fresh from Sami's Bakery in Tampa and delivered on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. Their olive selection is awesome and they have a great assortment of Mediterranean treats such as Baklava, etc. The staff are also very friendly and knowledgable. I'm used to finding great Middle Eastern food and markets in Los Angeles, so when I moved here I was SOOOOOO happy to find Cedar Market. Yes, there are some limitations to the selections available, but the Persian Cucumbers are great; very good variety of dates, olives and rice, EXCELLENT hummus made in-house. THE true, hidden gem in St Pete area. This place has foods you won't believe, olive oils, spices, honey. I visit here at least once a month and spend about a hundred dollars as least. The crowds go to Mazzaros but I'll let you in on a secret, the Ceders has many of the same or better products for a LOT less.
