Quiet destination right outside of town, no internet, and little phone reception. Really a great place to "get lost." All the cabins are pet friendly and they are fully furnished with TVs, couches, kitchen sets, and bedrooms. Summer is also a great time to rent because you have full access to canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, and their docks! Not to mention the Pond is LOADED with small mouth bass, and this is the only Pond in Northern Maine that has them! Lots of places around Long Pond to explore. & If you're feeling adventurous, the owner does guided hunting tours as well! We had a party of 12 staying at the Airbnb lodging from Friday to Sunday and participated in the rafting on Saturday. Weather is hard to plan for but in August, it felt like the chances of warm/hot weather would be decent. Unlucky for us, it was quite cloudy and chilly-hovering 60's. Rafting Experience 5/5 - Everybody had a great time!! Strapped on helmet and lifejackets to start the day and then took a bus up the river. Each boat had a 'guide' and our guide (Bryan/"Viking") was awesome. He told us great stories and facts throughout the ride and helped carefully steer us through some intense rapids. The last.. maybe half hour.. of the rafting was fairly quiet and not intense at all. This would've been fine if it was hot and sunny but the weather was super cloudy, chilly, and windy. Not ideal when you're drenched. Airbnb Lodging 3/5 - Plenty of clean beds that could fit a large party. They also had a large dining room table and an open kitchen. We were not able to get Wi-Fi unfortunately and the tv didn't connect to anything. Not a fan of the carpet flooring in one of the two bathrooms. Food 5/5 - They served lunch right after the rafting experience and the food was great!! We had the option of beef, chicken, and vegetarian. Came with rice pilaf, coleslaw, bread roll, and a slice of cake. Everything was yummy, some folks were able to get seconds as any leftovers were going to be tossed. Service 5/5 - Staff were all super friendly and happy to help. Knowing we're not from the area, they tried to offer us solutions to any problems we ran into. Great group of folks to work with. Location.. 1/5 - We had a huge group (3 cars) going up from Boston after work on a Friday (about 4.5-5hr drive) so we all got to the area very late at night. The drive wasn't that bad but finding the Airbnb Lodging was very difficult. Since it was after work hours, late at night, nobody picked up when we tried calling for assistance. There are just not enough guidance around the area to show customers where to park or how to find their lodging. We had to circle the site a few times before we realized where the building was. On our second night, we encountered a couple that were lost and had trouble looking for their lodging area.

They do not wash the comforters after guests leave, and I don't believe they do any cleaning to the cabins after guests leave. The guests are required to clean the cabin upon departure, or get charged $250 for cleaning services. Your paying between $2000 to $5000 for a week to stay here. The cabin I was in had cobwebs. The dishes were not cleaned, forks and spoons still had food on them. An animal was under my bed 2 nights in a row. Now my family was willing to over look these things because the lake is phenomenal, but Tomhegan blacklisted my Uncle for complaining of bed bugs in the Lodge. My family can still rent from them but we won't be. If a company is going to charge you thousands to stay for the week, you'd expect them to take a bed bug infestation seriously.

So when Boyfriend suggested venturing to Maine for a vacation getaway, I prepared for the worst. Luckily, I ended up with the best in Tomhegan. Situated on the pristine and pine-lined shore of Moosehead Lake and a quick jaunt from the Canadian border, Tomhegan is definitely remote. No phone, no television, no internet--and it's wonderful. This is the perfect spot for an escape with someone special or an annual excursion with your extended family. We stayed three nights in Diana, which was the original cabin at Tomhegan dating back to the early 1900s. I was incredibly impressed with the comfort and cozy style of our abode! Two picnic tables, colorful Adirondack chairs, and a two-tiered deck with a covered porch welcomed us when we arrived. If there's such a thing as backwoods cabin chic, the inside of Diana is it. True log structure, trophy game and vintage snow gear decorating the walls, an iron wood burning stove, and even a claw foot tub made it feed like home. Additionally, the fully-furnished kitchen made cooking each night a breeze. About 30 yards from our doorstep and nestled on the shoreline was our own private fire pit, stocked with wood and ready for massive s'more production. While Diana was perfect for the two of us, it could comfortably sleep up to eight. All for around $150 a night in mid-June! A steal, if you ask me. The grounds at Tomhegan are equally stunning. Like, if eight-year-old me was going to draw a picture of nature from her imagination, Tomhegan is what you'd get. Baby animals frolicking at your feet, a crystal-clear lake glistening in the sunshine during the day, and the entire Milky Way at your fingertips in the evening. Simply gorgeous. A few additional tips for the nature-bound: -The nearest grocery is about 55 minutes south in the small town of Greenville, Maine. While there's a small camp store on-site, you'll want to stock up here before heading north. -Leave your Mini Cooper at home, To access Tomhegan, first drive down a narrow country road. Then turn onto a gravel road. Then turn onto a dirt road. Then drive through the forest and over a one-lane wooden bridge while watching out the window for moose. Don't turn around, you're almost there. -Fishermen, rejoice. Boyfriend was catching brook trout like buttah from a nearby inlet as well as from the shoreline by our fire pit. -Check out Tomhegan's Facebook page for additional photos that aren't posted on the website. We were in two rafts - Mike and Garrett were our guides. We argued after the trip who had the better guide - both were very knowledgeable, patient, and fun. I was particularly grateful to Mike for the attention he gave my daughter - who wasn't all that sure about fishing! He made sure that she caught some fish, and helped her with how and where to cast to find fish. We shared a good laugh when a fish slipped out of her hands, right into her sweater pocket!! We spend 2 nights in a cabin on the Moxie camp site - it had 4 full size beds (we only needed one) but it would be great for a larger group of people. It had a night sitting area with a kitchen table if you wanted to cook over the camp fire (because we were on vacation....I did not want to cook!!) So we bought the meal plan. It seems that most people buy the breakfast, lunch is on the river during the rafting trips and dinner seems to be skipped by most - but it is pretty solid and worth it!! The lunch was steak or chicken, pasta salad and the best baked beans ever!!! if you are looking for a veggie option - they make their own veggie burgers (they looked great and people loved them). The only thing I could ask for would have been dessert (but i have a sweet tooth!! - taller half could have cared less) The staff was outstanding - felt like family. Phil checked us in -(he is the do it all man...from driving the moose tour, the buses and fixing anything you need man) he was very friendly and helpful. We bought firewood (5 dollars for a good size bundle) from him - he set up our fire pit so all we had to do was light it! The camp has 4 bathrooms and 2 showers - they were clean and lots of light (there are no bathrooms in the cabins) no fear walking to them after the sunset. The first day we did a half of day white water rafting with Angela (she was wonderful!!) and Funyaked the 2nd half of the river. The second day we rafted the entire river with Randy (he was wonderful!!!) We were able to swim in the river, paddle our hearts out on class 4 rapids and enjoy a few lazy miles at the end of the river. We even saw a bald eagle along the river!!! The guides know what they are doing and really do their best to make sure you and the boat have the best time ever. We look forward to going back to Moxie in the future! And if you like the leaves as the change color - Moxie is a great way to have some fun while you see the wonderful colors!

Our guide Tim was great, he was very knowledgeable, answered all of our questions, and made us feel safe while still having a blast. The rapids were fun, the food was surprisingly good, all in all a good time. I take away one star because, while Tim was excellent, a few of the other guides seemed to have attitudes. One spoke sharply to me and my friend, as well as to several other guests. I know they do this trip every day, but it shouldn't be that hard to put on a happy face while guests are around. This took away from the experience a bit because it made us feel like we were inconveniencing them, but overall I give a good review because it was VERY fun and Tim was a great guide. There was another guide, I think his name was Dalton, that was very funny and cheerful and had a great attitude.
