I had my doubts as how to keep 5 boys happy, but then I stumbled upon Crab Apple Whitewater Rafting! Our family had only been rafting once in Northern California so we were inexperienced to say the least. Plus, a few of us jump out of ride lines at amusement parks soooo... Our paintball guide was Alex and he was perfect for my group of competitive one-uppers. He was patient, kind, and had a funny, commanding personality. My teenage sons needed a big, strong guy to lead them. It was so fun! even for a 46-year old mom. There were two locations to play on and they also had cold water for us and some bug spray to top off with. We enjoyed the ride out there with Chuck, the patriarch/owner. Restaurant food was great! No complaints from the kids-- burgers, pizza, nuggets, salad and specials. Next day was rafting. the head guide exuded confidence and therefore calmed us all. He had about 30 years experience. I felt very safe. Our guide was Alex again. He was fantastic! Calming the fears of my 11-year old and talking us through the class IVs. He also let each boy try their hand at steering, teaching them with encouragement. No egos here at Crab Apple. Just humble good people. After we had a fun and delicious bbq prepared by the guides. Just a real good vibe! I also want to mention Dawn, who packed an enormous to-go bag with breakfast items when she learned we were leaving at 5am to catch a plane in Boston. Talk about going above and beyond! I highly recommend Crab Apple for individuals and families alike. Five Stars to Chuck and his classy, hardworking family.

Safety was paramount. Loved the format as well - raft, eat, relax! Loved the photos and video! We are trying to figure out how and when to get back to take our kids along for the ride! Would highly recommend them to anyone wanting an exceptional experience on and off the river in Maine.

Their venue is closer to Bangor than some of the other outfitters that do this, however, the ride to get to the pond is at least an hour. You ride in a van and some of the roads are bumpy. The guide narrates a little, but I feel he could have done more. The home base is nice and they sell souvenirs, coffee, and snacks. They have a bathroom building with changing areas. There was lots of water on the ground there, so I wonder why it wasn't moped. Once you get into the van, there is no bathroom area (unless there is a porta potty that I missed. The scenery by the water was very beautiful and peaceful and even though no moose were spotted, it was still a very nice experience. The price was fair and there was always someone that answered the phone when we called to ask questions. Overall a great experience.

The two exceptions were when the van stopped and we all got out. The only good seat was in the front passenger spot. At one point two Jeeps were behind our tour van for a long time, the guide made a comment about how they were being impatient, needed to respect the tour bus, and didn't let them pass us by pulling over. She kept them behind us for quite about 1/2 hour. When we finally spotted a moose 2.5 hours in and she pulled over, the two vehicles revved their engines and sped past, scaring the one moose we saw the entire time back into the woods. So we saw a moose running into the woods. The people at the back of the van saw it's butt... As we headed back to the tour lodge, another moose crossed the road in front of us, it took about 4 strides across the street... so, did we see moose? Technically, yes... was it what we signed up for and paid $74, and a four hour ride for? No! So their 89% moose spotting rate includes this... if you're thinking you want to see moose in water, munching away and you have an almost 90% chance that's not really an accurate take on this. Also, our tour guide Natalie was very nice, however she did not know much more than the average Joe- me... she wasn't particularly engaging and didn't have information that didn't pop up on any Google search, as a matter of fact, she didn't necessarily know info that did pop up on a google search... she did give us tasty brownies and water. I was able to capture scenery photos, no moose photos though

TLDR: Super fun rafting experience, difficult to find the lodging area, lunch provided was yummy…read more Would definitely do this again. We had a party of 12 staying at the Airbnb lodging from Friday to Sunday and participated in the rafting on Saturday. Weather is hard to plan for but in August, it felt like the chances of warm/hot weather would be decent. Unlucky for us, it was quite cloudy and chilly-hovering 60's. Rafting Experience 5/5 - Everybody had a great time!! Strapped on helmet and lifejackets to start the day and then took a bus up the river. Each boat had a 'guide' and our guide (Bryan/"Viking") was awesome. He told us great stories and facts throughout the ride and helped carefully steer us through some intense rapids. The last.. maybe half hour.. of the rafting was fairly quiet and not intense at all. This would've been fine if it was hot and sunny but the weather was super cloudy, chilly, and windy. Not ideal when you're drenched. Airbnb Lodging 3/5 - Plenty of clean beds that could fit a large party. They also had a large dining room table and an open kitchen. We were not able to get Wi-Fi unfortunately and the tv didn't connect to anything. Not a fan of the carpet flooring in one of the two bathrooms. Food 5/5 - They served lunch right after the rafting experience and the food was great!! We had the option of beef, chicken, and vegetarian. Came with rice pilaf, coleslaw, bread roll, and a slice of cake. Everything was yummy, some folks were able to get seconds as any leftovers were going to be tossed. Service 5/5 - Staff were all super friendly and happy to help. Knowing we're not from the area, they tried to offer us solutions to any problems we ran into. Great group of folks to work with. Location.. 1/5 - We had a huge group (3 cars) going up from Boston after work on a Friday (about 4.5-5hr drive) so we all got to the area very late at night. The drive wasn't that bad but finding the Airbnb Lodging was very difficult. Since it was after work hours, late at night, nobody picked up when we tried calling for assistance. There are just not enough guidance around the area to show customers where to park or how to find their lodging. We had to circle the site a few times before we realized where the building was. On our second night, we encountered a couple that were lost and had trouble looking for their lodging area.

I have gone 3 times here, and they do a great job. Good experience all around. Large groups can…read morerent the lodge, it's a cool place to hang after rafting. BYOB !

We spend 2 nights in a cabin on the Moxie camp site - it had 4 full size beds (we only needed one) but it would be great for a larger group of people. It had a night sitting area with a kitchen table if you wanted to cook over the camp fire (because we were on vacation....I did not want to cook!!) So we bought the meal plan. It seems that most people buy the breakfast, lunch is on the river during the rafting trips and dinner seems to be skipped by most - but it is pretty solid and worth it!! The lunch was steak or chicken, pasta salad and the best baked beans ever!!! if you are looking for a veggie option - they make their own veggie burgers (they looked great and people loved them). The only thing I could ask for would have been dessert (but i have a sweet tooth!! - taller half could have cared less) The staff was outstanding - felt like family. Phil checked us in -(he is the do it all man...from driving the moose tour, the buses and fixing anything you need man) he was very friendly and helpful. We bought firewood (5 dollars for a good size bundle) from him - he set up our fire pit so all we had to do was light it! The camp has 4 bathrooms and 2 showers - they were clean and lots of light (there are no bathrooms in the cabins) no fear walking to them after the sunset. The first day we did a half of day white water rafting with Angela (she was wonderful!!) and Funyaked the 2nd half of the river. The second day we rafted the entire river with Randy (he was wonderful!!!) We were able to swim in the river, paddle our hearts out on class 4 rapids and enjoy a few lazy miles at the end of the river. We even saw a bald eagle along the river!!! The guides know what they are doing and really do their best to make sure you and the boat have the best time ever. We look forward to going back to Moxie in the future! And if you like the leaves as the change color - Moxie is a great way to have some fun while you see the wonderful colors!
