The cabin was amazing, very clean, well kept yet the rustic feel but with all of the amenities. The park was well kept and beautiful. We did trail rides both on Friday and Saturday through the forest and along the river. Our guide was amazing and the two horses we got to ride were perfect. My daughter is experienced, but I am not and both horses were perfectly trained even for an old man like me. We will be back for sure. Ignore the older reviews, the current management, husband and wife, were both some of the best people I've met in a long time and work hard to keep the cabins and grounds perfect.

It was July 4th weekend and there was only 3 OTHER TRAILERS there on that big beautiful place. It's not the same since the new caretakers have taken over last year. You had to book way in advance just to secure a spot, no one is even there, now. We the ppl helped pay for this place with many stays and now we none feel welcome, anymore. It's an Empty facility now! Caretakers were rude and it seemed we were a burden to be there on the one occasion of speaking with them. We had major issues with our plug hookups last October, causing my beautiful dog to get BADLY electrocuted, when they had just taken over. (Large male collie and he cried out and loud) No one was accommodating. It caused my husband to have to replace the converter in our 39' Lakota along with microwave. To say "disappointed" is an understatement. We have supported the owner for all of these years. We actually, reached out to him through messenger. He said he would be calling me back concerning our experience but never reached out. It's been 3 weeks now. Unfortunately, the running of BCR has changed drastically and it's very sad. This place was a fun place for our family and children to relax and have fun. To say we miss the other caretakers is an understatement..! Most people who visit this part of the Homochitto National Forest do so for either camping or lakefront activities. The lake here is typical of Mississippi lakes which is to say that it is beautiful, filled with fish and if you really want, you can swim in it. Surrounding the lake there are several picnic tables, shelters and permanently mounted charcoal grills. The lake has an area sectioned off for swimming, but let me warn you, this is no swimming pool. While I haven't personally swam in this lake, I have swam in many like it. Feel a little nibble while you're swimming? That's not your girlfriend, that's a perch. If you think that will freak you out, don't swim here. All of the stuff I just wrote about is great, but it is not why I visited here. My visit was a result of a guy at work telling me all about the dirt roads that run throughout the forest. Since it was a holiday weekend I couldn't get a map to find the roads so I just set out exploring. If dirt roads are what you are interested in, this is the section of the park to find them. Right before you come to the area to pay your fee there will be a gravel road toward your left. Do yourself a favor and follow it. The roads that traverse this park offer an amazing journey. There are actually several different roads, many of which my GPS picked up. The roads were labeled with numbers, but the main one was listed as Wagon Wheel Road on my GPS. Since the roads are gravel even a car can pass easily, but a truck or 4x4 would allow you to do what I did. Along the gravel roads there are many smaller dirt roads. I believe they are all part of the national forest road system, but they are not labeled. They are also more difficult to traverse and some even required high ground clearance and four wheel drive. I spent hours exploring this forest. During that time I never saw any other people. It was very peaceful. So why would anyone want to drive through a great expanse of forest on a dirt road? If you have to ask, this is probably not the place for you. If you enjoy this sort of thing, this is a great place to get away from it all.

We tent camped by the lake, but there are primitive sites way off the beaten track. It is a large forest with 20+ miles of trails. They were well marked along the trail itself but hard to find when you are crossing over the fire roads and connectors. We spent half the day on the trails and would have kept going if we would have brought more supplies. We only found the Richardson Trail worth biking and the pine smell and rolling hills were well worth all the energy we exerted. The Mill Road is a nice hike, just very rooty. Tally's is closed at the camping entrance, but we had to take it to connect to the Richardson for biking- it is also rooty. Highly recommend this spot! Note You can't make camping reservations early and RVs are not allowed.

There was also an unloading spot that you could drive your car down to and she also let us borrow a wagon to haul our stuff from the car for the campsite. The campsites are close by each other so it can get loud when it's really full, but I didn't mind that - I almost felt like we had neighbors lol but if you are wanting something more private, please keep that in mind. There was a flushable toilet with a running sink and a small mirror. There's also a pavilion with some picnic tables and lights at night if you wanna play cards there. There was a porter potty near the campsites so that was another option for the bathroom aside from the flushable toilet that was just a little bit of a walk closer to the parking lot. Multiple water/dishwashing stations with big sinks (huge plus!) Firewood was five dollars a bundle and we ran through four in one night! (Bundles are kinda small.) We did have an electric campsite, which was just one outlet (it did have an extension cord attached to it, so if I would've known this, I would've brought some lights to hang up.) The fire pit is pretty big and it comes with a cooking grate. There is also lots of trees to hang up hammocks on. The tent pad was pretty big but I did ask for a campsite that could fit 3 tents - I saw some that were a lot smaller so you will just have to let her know what you want. We had site #8 - I would stay there again. We paid $98 for an electrical campsite for two nights with four people and four bundles of firewood. Not too bad. We didn't have too much of a problem with bugs, but I would definitely bring some bug spray next time. We did have some fire ants next to the fire, but they didn't get in our food. We also saw a good bit of spiders but you're in the woods so what do you expect lol. You're also only 15-20 minutes away from some great hiking trails! We went to Clarke Creek in Mississippi. There's another closer to the campsite I believe. Anyways, i'd come back here!

Everyone we met there working or camping were friendly. As you looked around the park you could almost sense what it was like in its glory days. There was a well planned swimming hole (though now a huge tree lay in it), there are cute gazebos sprinkled throughout the park and a great trail that circled the lake. We floated around in our kayaks and Boots even was able to fish. I spent a day cleaning a walkway/trail that was so covered with years of debris that it was slippery and dangerous. The lack of attention to this (and SO many parks across the country) is sad. And we are so close to losing these gorgeous spots due to lack of attention. An added bonus was that the little towns nearby had everything we needed for some camper repairs and such.

There are anchor bolts sticking out of the walls and bottom of the pool. Three of our five person group cut their feet on the broken rough patches of concrete. There is a dirt line all the way around the inside. Its gross. The camping spots are all gravel. It's rained two afternoons and our sites were flooded. The power went out two of three days but was restored quickly. There are kids (like young kids) and adults drinking and driving golf carts and side by sides FAST and irresponsibly. Someone is going to get hurt. Rules are not enforced so there are people riding and playing loud music at all hours of the night. Don't expect to get anywhere in a vehicle. People park in the roads wherever they want with campers, trucks, trailers, golf carts, etc. There is NOTHING to do nearby. The closest grocery store is 20 min away. The only positive of our stay was the Fourth of July fireworks show. It lasted 25 minutes. I bumped up one star for that. We will not be back here.

(All those including paddles for kayaks are locked up in camp store that isn't open until Friday ). The animals were nice. It was rutting season though so they asked you don't pet the deer. Fishing was good. Caught some small ones. Did see others catch bigger. Lake was very pretty. Peaceful through the week. There were only four of us maybe lol. Weekends are a different story. Very busy. Do need to enforce some speed limits on Golf carts and a few cars too. Most part was good. There's the river just through the gate where the boat ramp is. (I would never back a boat down that ramp btw it's sketchy steep) That area is a good little swimming spot since the pool and tubing and pretty much all of it shuts down last week of September. Staff was nice.
