At 56, I have been through my share of rheumatologists. Unfortunately, there is no cure or remedy that will rid me of any of these issues. Dr. Gregory Borstad does his best to help me manage my symptoms, including extreme sensitivity to touch/pressure in certain areas (lower, inner calves, soles of feet, outer, upper thighs), muscle pain, exhaustion and fatigue, arthritis, depression (related to not feeling well), & headaches, along with GI problems. Dr. Borstad really wants to help, but he doesn't have a magic wand, just like none of the others do. But I do like him a lot because he listens and cares. He will often be open to prescribing medications that I ask for, such as biologics, but he will not provide pain management. (I have to get my hydrocodone elsewhere. I am only on one 10 mg tablet per day, cut into thirds or quarters, but he will not prescribe it.) Nonetheless, doctor hopping has become a total drag for me, because my illnesses are what they are. So I will stick with Carolina Arthritis Associates. They bill my BCBS insurance at a MUCH, MUCH more reasonable rate than Wilmington Health's rheumatologist, Heather Favorito, so my co-pay is not such a huge financial burden as it was with her--even though I did like her a lot. Also, Dr. Borstad's assistant, Farah, is very efficient and gets back to me in a timely manner. The nurse assistant whose place Farah took was just as lovely and efficient. It just sucks that I cannot live my life normally. I wish there were more answers.

I injured my knees several years ago and was diagnosed with bi-lateral chondromalacia of the patella resulting in painful giving way, sharp stabbing pain, extreme pain when extending the knees, and constant throbbing. After visiting my PCP, the week prior I was offered to receive steroid injections from my primary care provider in her office without any additional x-rays or MRIs, but I declined due to the correlation between steroids and opacification of the optic lenses. However, she provided a referral to a Dustin Hoffman who works at Emergeortho of Wilmington. In doing so, the scheduler called and I advised her that my PCP has the MRI summary for both knees and they should ask for said summaries to be forwarded in order to provide a clear picture of my condition, but due to the incredulity of the situation the office didn't request the MRI summary from my PCP resulting with Dustin Hoffman insisting on billing my insurance company for an X-ray even though by his own omission agreed that more times than not the x-ray image will show normal. I find this sort of mentality to be border line spurious and mendacious in nature. In addition, during my brief interaction with Dustin Hoffman he did not ask one question concerning my knees. Didn't ask about the trauma, the fact they give out, the sharp pain, or the constant throbbing or why my PCP referred me to him. The only concern he had was to be able to bill my insurance for an x-ray that he and I both knew would indicate normal imaging and at no time did he suggest a new updated MRI, which I would have capitulated to. Healthcare at its best in the United States now awaydays!! Two thumbs down!!

They also mention "feet" 3 times and "injections" everywhere. I went so far as to call 5 weeks earlier and talk to a medical assistant and confirmed that they treat my condition with cortisone injections. So my appointment date comes and "Dr." Wall walks into the room, looks at a paper in his hand and says to me "I am supposed to talk to you about getting an electronic stimulator installed in your back". I knew then that he was a puppet and all was lost. I knew that he had violated my privacy rights and spoken to a previous Doctor of mine about a previous medical condition that I no longer have. The previous Doctor also violated my privacy rights. Please do not confuse my terms referring Doctor with previous Doctor, they are 2 different doctors. He never asked about my pain, where it was, what were my symptoms, or examined me. He never got closer than 10 feet to me. He clearly did not care why I was there or have any intention of treating the condition I came to see him for. To make things worse an electronic stimulator which is a glorified Tens Unit in my back is not recognized as a treatment for Neuropathy in feet. Where as, cortisone injections in my feet are widely used. He disagreed with this fact. Then I told him that there was a lot of information and photos of where to inject the cortisone into my feet to relieve neuropathic pain on many medical sites on the web. I know he is not a surgeon and I was not there for that but he also disagreed that surgery on my feet existed even thought I told him there were movies of it and surgeons who do such surgery on various medical websites. I even cited an article in "Practical Pain Management" magazine, which he said he subscribed to, that went into detail how nerve surgery has a 91% success rate for neuropathic pain. The article has pictures and everything. He said I had read it wrong. No, he is wrong.
