Supervisors Lydia Williams and Cassandra Davis were very poor in upholding the therapeutic values of the facility. Director Robert Wilson, coordinator Antonio, and psychologist Mary Lou turned a deaf ear to the ongoing verbal abuse supervisors and some staff inflicted on clients. read more

Came out worse then she went in. On monthly reports they stated she wasn't safe for home visits or for outings. At the six month mark they released her successful . She was self harming almost 2-3 times a week. This place is the definition of "mental hospitals don't help you, they scare you into acting right." Luckily for me, my therapists were wonderful and worked well with me, but I cannot say the same for the caretakers and staff. This place is incredibly prejudiced to LGBT patients. Transgender or genderqueer patients are constantly disrespected. Preferred names or pronouns are treated as suggestions or rewards for good behavior. The tech constantly engaged in gossip about the patients, name dropping and insulting whichever patient didn't "act right." Fights and threats to patient safety were never taken seriously. This establishment also exhibited sexist behaviors. Female patients were considered "less mature" than the boys in every situation. Female patients were not allowed to watch TV-14 and up rated shows and movies, while boys got free access to whatever was available. Girls were often never taken outside and put on lockdown. Any attempt to speak against this would be labeled as a "riot." I truly feel bad for the therapists and teachers who genuinely care and want to see the patients grow and get better for having to work in such a cesspool and be associated with the awful staff there. read more

If you are checking reviews, I suspect you are where we were a couple of months ago, when we were exploring residential treatment options for our son. Noticing that there were no high scores for any treatment centers, we realized that the circumstances for all of us in this unfortunate situation have to be a family's and child greatest life challenge. All of us are ill equipped to handled the problems and none of us want to be here. Happily after two months, our experience has been nothing but positive. The Center has honored and delivered on its every commitment. Its unlikely our son would agree with this review but we all know why. From the first day of our son's stay, we have looked for problems with the Center and our decision. Thankfully, we have found none. read more

I've been to many facilities, and this one takes the dang cake with how awful it is. I came in for numerous suicide attempts and this place made me feel worse. You know how the front lobby is all nice? The upstairs where we (Girls side) lived was an absolute wreck. We made several attempts to tell Robert Woods about the MOLD growing in the showers, but were brushed off by being told "That's just a lil dirt". The kitchen staff are lovely, but twice while I was there the bread had mold and Mr. Shirreff ended up ordering pizza for us after saying "Y'all might not have dinner tonight". There's also mold growing around the air vents and on the ceiling. Lets also mention that there are only locks on the offices, so I ended up nearly escaping several times. When you first arrive to the facility; you're brought upstairs and strip searched, drug tested, and pregnancy tested without warning. You're then not allowed to talk to any of the other patients for 48-72 hours to ensure you "Won't befriend the wrong people" and so you don't "Spread ideas of rioting against the facility" (those are genuine excuses I was given). You aren't allowed to contact your family till your first family session, which is around a week and a half after you arrive. You only get two phone calls to them, each lasting ten minutes along with an hour long weekend visit if you're good. While you're here, if you act mentally stable you'll be treated subpar. If you act out though you'll be treated pretty horribly. The first time I came here, I behaved amazing; the staff treated me like a paycheck but they weren't deliberately horrid to me. The second time I was here, I was good for about a month; but then I had a manic episode (Something that happens to me every few months) causing me to act out. My doctor (I don't remember his name but you would meet him on Mondays, he was an old white guy) decided that I needed a medication change. I told him that I wasn't comfortable having my medication changed because my medication works very well for me and that I was just in having an episode; Me expressing my discomfort was responded to by him saying "Well you're not the one with a say in this, are you?". I ended up storming out of the room and trying to escape (I was manic so my irrational behavior felt valid in the moment). I ended up making it to the front of the facility but got restrained (This was done properly and in my paperwork at admission it was consented to in case of emergency). I then was taken to the calming room, AKA the library. They kept me in there for the rest of the school day then once therapy started I was taken to the unit and left with Mrs. Doris. Mrs. Doris did not pay any attention to me, causing me to be able to use the elevator and make it downstairs. I nearly left but I turned the hall to try and go out the back instead of the front and there was a staff member who stopped me. This process continued of me trying to escape for 3 days. I attempted escaping for three days, I did it eleven times. Nobody bothered asking what was wrong other than Ms. Carletta (If you see this Ms. Carletta, you're awesome and you genuinely did help me). I ended up being sent to a mental hospital then returning and attempting to escape again causing me to be kicked out. I'm gonna be honest, I'm petty and will be name dropping each staff member that was out of line. Mrs. Doris would constantly sleep on the job. She would be rude to patients for no reason and would go as far as making fun of them even. Mrs. Pat said to me, "You're acting Psychotic!" during a manic episode I was having where I was so paranoid I tried running away and then her and Mrs. Doris barricaded me into my room. Mr. Woods (The owner), does not actually care about you. He cares on if you behave well enough for his standards. There was a girl who was very aggressive and volatile whom he openly expressed his distaste for, in front of her (Yeah Mr. Woods, the girl who broke room 6's window that you talked crap about openly) Mrs. Marylou (The other owner), is emotionally detached and will guilt trip you if you're having a panic attack. She acts as if the facility is purely a transaction. I've had her as a family therapist and she sided with my dad (My literal abuser) on basically everything so that I would stay longer (My dad kept making up lies about me the first time I was there) Mrs. Tanya starts drama with patients for absolutely no reason other than because she can. She openly will favor you if you suck-up to her and do what she wants. Mrs. Frills (The science teacher), is just rude to you. She acts like she a middle school girl that pretends to empathies with you while talking crap about you once you're not in the conversation with her anymore. Ms. Carletta and Mrs. Cece are AMAZING!!! They actually cares about the people who come in and try bonding with them. They don't make you feel bad about stuff and if they do on accident then actually apologizes. Don't come here read more

My sister was admitted here and we were so excited for her to finally get help. Within a few days of being there we received a call saying she was in the hospital with seizures (she's never had a seizure before). The hospital ran tests after hours of waiting and everything was fine and there was nothing wrong with her. My sister tried to communicate with us that they had been giving people the wrong medications . Keep in mind a lady from the facility was with her in the hospital the whole time and immediately told my sister to stop talking. So she couldn't tell us anything else. All phone calls are also monitored with someone sitting there listening to them and keeping them from speaking freely. Anyways, she goes back to the facility. The next day she is back in the hospital with what they claimed as seizures and heart arrhythmias (also had never had). The doctors said they were not seizures and it was documented. The facility then kicked her out. My sister is defeated and even more suicidal and depressed because even this facility didn't want her. Since she has been home she has had ZERO medical issues. Something is wrong with this facility and they need to be under investigation immediately. Once it is confirmed by specialists that nothing is wrong with her and that she was being drugged or something else- legal action will be taken. Also- my sister has had a heart stint since she was a year old. A stint that does not need to be replaced and that she will have for life. She has hiked 1000 step waterfalls and been absolutely fine. A couple of days being in this facility they told us she wouldn't be allowed to do PE because of her heart stint. We reassured them the stint would not be an issue. They still did not allow her to participate in PE. When all the medical stuff happened the facility tried to blame it on her perfectly fine stint. Also to note : this facility has alot of juvie kids. It is not for everyday children with mental issues. A worker that my sister liked actually said while leaving that any other place would be better because this place would not help her. The lady was then written up. The boys and girls are seperated in this facility yet the boys gained access to the girl wing multiple times. A kid was also left unresponsive for hours after given 6 of the wrong medications and the facility lied to the kids parents about the incident. Numerous other highly illegal and unethical things happened in the short time my sister was there. Please don't bring your kid here even if you have no other options . I will update at the end of the week if she does or does not have any medical issues after not being under their care. After sharing our concerns with the facility we were told it "was unfortunate but not their problem". read more

This is a place of last resorts. That's what my child was told by staff-- that this is a place that kids are forced to go by CPS or Juvenile as a last resort. The kids there are more likely than not seriously abused with criminal histories and extensive problems. If you are thinking of sending your child here on the recommendation of a provider for a voluntary admission, It's not worth it. The stay there will probably traumatize your child and they might come out worse than before. That was my daughter's concern for herself. She knows she needs help but also knows what to expect from a treatment facility and she recognized right away that her care was substandard. Firstly, everything she told me and what we experienced was 100% consistent with the other negative reviews here. I was told I would get a call from my daughter on Tuesdays and Thursdays plus 30 minutes on Saturday and Sunday for phone or video. That didn't happen. I waited and waited. I called the number I was given, no answer. I left messages that weren't returned. This was a huge red flag. They only get 120 minutes of contact with family per week and that is crucial for children. The call schedule should be followed no excuses. We were both later told that she wasn't allowed calls until the "family meeting" but we weren't told this in advance and she was eventually able to call before the meeting. I never would've left her if I thought we'd be unable to communicate for a week. When we did talk she told me she needed to be transferred elsewhere. She had to whisper because the staff will hang up the phone if they don't approve of something the kids say. The staff will say the child is "disregulating," but the children warned my daughter they will hang up if they say they want to leave. When I went to pick her up for AMA discharge, I wasn't asked for an identifying number to get in the gate. The staff there had never met me. I wasn't asked for my identification or an identifying number to pick her up. Anyone could've taken my child. When I told them my daughter's name I waited for some time and they brought me the wrong child. The girl was already in the lobby carrying her things when she cried out, "that's not my mom." The poor girl had been told her mother was there to discharge her. She had her things packed into a trash bag (because they won't let the children keep their luggage). The will worker apologized and asked for the name again. They eventually brought me the correct child. The other girl was not leaving. I feel so sorry for her. My daughter said they both have Spanish names and the staff couldn't be bothered to learn the correct pronunciation. I'm glad a trafficker didn't come because literally I could've taken this child out of the building if she hadn't said not my mom. So I got my daughter and I can't tell you how relieved she was. She had been scared to ask for water or bathroom. Said staff doesn't respect pronouns or preferred names / nicknames for kids. Staff is rude and unpleasant. She wasn't allowed to participate in group for three days or talk to anyone but peer mentors. Children go in on punishment level (isolation) and have to earn their way up to even taking. There is very little activity or groups so children spend most of their time sleeping and watching tv in the day room. She cried all day every day. I'm sorry but this is ridiculous. If you have a vulnerable child and put them in a situation like this -- no contact with family or even other patients, that's a recipe for disaster. She could've been being physically abused by staff or other children and no one would've known. When she first got there she was strip searched without warning or explanation. The bathroom was nasty and there was a man outside the door. She was scared she would be raped. That's how sketchy this place looks on the inside (the part parents don't see) and she wasn't explained what was happening so she didn't know. I was told I would be notified if my daughter wasn't eating because she has an eating disorder and I was told I would. But she never once ate breakfast and I wasn't told. She said they record food intake but she actually saw the paper be thrown away one day. She said the doctor told her that they didn't know about the eating disorder that she is diagnosed with so she just wasn't given any attention to that. Another girl with an eating disorder was allowed to sit on an exercise bike all day. Staff said it was good she was exercising. The other things she mentioned were pretty much covered by previous reviews. I do want you to look at the pic I attached. My daughter was afraid to tell me she need to be transferred so got another kid to teach her to say a message in Spanish. She wrote it down to tell me because I speak Spanish and she wanted to tell me without the staff catching her. read more

After getting very positive recommendations from parents we know that have sent their child to TCSI we admitted our son for major depression and SUD. He went willingly as he wanted help to feel better and live a more healthy life. Within 2 days he called and asked to go somewhere else. He reported and I confirmed with admissions and a therapist that the vast majority of boys there are there by court order, have been admitted against their will, have no plans on maintaining sobriety or changing their lives after release. While our son wasnt mistreated while there he was never given a toothbrush for 6 days, said when they weren't in school they basically slept in the day room on couches and the floor, he had 1 group session and didnt have a one on one until 4 days into placement. My advice is carefully chose the RTC and be sure to ask about the current clients in the program. read more

After my daughter's brief stay at the residential center she recited virtual group, individual and family therapy. It has been so far the best program to address my daughter's issues. The staff is caring and we have learned so many coping skills. We cannot thank them enough and would highly recommend this program. read more

It is never an easy decision or process to admit your child to a place like the Center. But if you as a parent find yourself needing the services of the Center...I would highly recommend the Center. Amazing Treatment Facility, look no further! As an educator for 20 years, a former school principal, and mother to 5, I did not take finding a treatment facility for my son lightly. I did hours of research and asked several doctors and therapist, and combed through mountains of reviews on. The Center for Success and Independence was the only inpatient facility recommended by several different doctors. When I entered the facility it was clean and bright and very welcoming. From my first conversation with Mykala, the admission coordinator, to Mark, the Clinical Director, and Alvaro, our family therapist, I was very impressed by all of the staff. Mykala went above and beyond to help me coordinate getting my son admitted quickly. Mark listened to my families needs and our feedback and tried to accommodate in every way he could. When I spoke to my 16 year old son the first time he said that they were too strict and had too many rules, and naturally begged to come home. I talked to him again two days later and he said "mom, I think I have a lot more to learn here." I highly recommend The Center for Success and Independence, it is clear that they focus on doing what is in the best interest of each individual child, and do not take a "one-size fits all approach" read more

I don't recommend this facility, my Granddaughter has been in here for almost 3 months. I carefully, lovingly raised her and protected her since birth. I heard great things about this place. I admitted her there, unknowing, that the allow a girl who just turned 13 to disrespect her parents, cursing, making up delusional lies, which they just believe, I have never once spoken to her personal therapist, the medication they put her on is not working. If fact has made her worse. Today I asked to set up a visit to come and visit her face to face, they asked her, she said no! So I told them that I would just come and take her home. They threatened me with calling the CPS!!! Every time she does not like what is going on, she threatens to kill herself. They have no legal right to isolate her from me. She was injured by another patient this week, who left marks on her face. Maybe I'm the one who should call the CPS. read more

Words can not describe how exceptional the treatment is at the center, for the entire family. My 15 year old son was here for major depression and dangerous and uncontrollable rage. They built him up and gave him the skills to deal with his emotions and make good decisions. Before the center, he had never been motivated by anything. Now he is motivated because he likes how it feels. He has gained so much self confidence and self worth through this process. The center is focused on very intensive therapy. There is not just an hour here and an hour there. These kids and their families are meeting one on one and in groups non stop. It heals the whole family. No matter what these kids look like or have done or what they are in to, they are treated the same by the staff and their peers. I can rave on and on, but the biggest testament is the kids themselves, my son actually misses his family from the center. It is unbelievable, especially after all the things we had tried in the past. read more

Our son reached a point of depression and anger that he was unmanageable. Our family was not sure where to turn but fortunately our therapist recommended The Center for Success and Independence. Our son was 14 and entered the Center just prior to Christmas 2019. Although this is the hardest thing we've ever done, it was one of the best things we have ever done. Although there are some kids who have drug or alcohol issues, many did not. They were all in maladaptive coping styles and needed to learn how to manage their emotions in healthy ways. We still have lots of room to grow but the staff there were phenomenal. They were caring, thoughtful, and experts at what they do. From the front desk, to the therapists, to the psychiatrist and nurses, to the kitchen staff - they all worked together to take care of these kids. Our son learned coping skills via Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy and we all learned these skills as a family. Since there are no personal electronics, these kids learn to communicate and relate to one another and their family in new ways. At times, he still struggles with managing his emotions but we are fortunate to continue to work with one of the therapists there with routine family counseling. The parents need help too and their parent sessions and support groups were very insightful. Everyone at The Center for Success and Independence deserves a Gold Star in my book. read more

My 14 year old great grand daughter was experiencing anxiety, depression, self harm and suicidal ideations. She had been hospitalized twice but it still continued. I felt that a residential center would help and Center for Success was the answer for me. She spent 90 days there and those 90 days were very hard for me, but I realized that she really needed what the Center had to offer. It took her about 30 days to realize she was not going home until she "got with the program". She finally did and then she started on the upward and forward movements. She is not free of her anxiety nor her depression, but the self-harm and suicide situations remain in check. She has the coping skills to assist her when the anxiety becomes an issue. We are not out of the woods but we certainly are in a much better place than we were in April of 2022. I highly recommend the staff and the program at the Center and the assistance they provided me as a parent was so welcomed. Parents need the tools to help their children, and I received the basics. Still need more, but that will come in time. My child's issues did not happen overnight and I do not expect them to go away overnight. It is a work in progress but we now have a foundation thanks to the Center. read more

They discharged my son recklessly and irresponsibly with no discharge plan. Said they couldn't keep their other clients safe in a facility with 24/7 staff watching him but they discharged him home to us. In my opinion, if they didn't want him there they should have sent him somewhere else. No intensive outpatient no nothing. Very disappointing read more

Please do not send your children here. There are normally 3 staff members to 21 clients. It's just not possible to keep and eye on all clients even though they are all there because they need to be watched for safety. The building is in an unsafe area and it is easy to escape because of the lack of supervision. Clients are kept indoors 23- 24 hours of each day and the treatment is about average. There are clients in here who would like help but are just thrown a binder with a therapy plan. Some staff members are committed to truly helping clients while others are there for a paycheck (which they aren't afraid to let you know). If your child happens to stay over the holidays the center does the best they can to make it as normal as possible. While I was staying here a girl I grew close with committed suicide in her room after being left unattended for over an hour. There are many places in houston to help your child receive the help they need but I wouldn't NOT recommend this place. read more

Honestly "rehab" doesn't help anyone unless they want to change. In my opinion going to rehabilitation places often times makes kids worse because the risky behaviors and drug abuse become normalized. My drug abuse became far worse after I left the center. A girl committed suicide while I was there and just two days after it happened we were yelled at for "boundaries" and not allowed to hug and comfort each other. We were also reprimanded for wanting to sleep in the community and not in our rooms considering our friend had just killed herself in her closet. While I was there a staff member also attempted to punch a client and was not fired, only sent home for the day. The only good thing that came from the center was that I met my best friend Madi & I formed a strong bond with one of the staff members. Most of the girls just fake their progress and don't address any real issues so they can get out as quickly as possible. read more

I went here, and I can say that my treatment there was phenomenal. I was amazed by the amount of staff there that actually worked with the clients, including myself, to make their treatment go as smoothly and as easily as possible. The therapists are more than open to talking to each and every client. Some therapists talk to clients that aren't even theirs. The ratio of staff to client is 5:1. The school program is helpful, because the client can keep up with their school work while getting treatment. During my stay there, I learned so many skills and methods for dealing with different things, and it was because of the therapists and their dedication to helping clients. The Center is not just focused on adolescents with substance addiction, it also focuses on anger, depression, and so much more. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who needs treatment. read more

i would not reccomend. i attended the center and was not given necessary care. upon admission i developed an infection in my throat. i was not taken to a doctor for three or four days, once i developed a fever. during those days i developed a nasty case of the flu. the food is bad, half assed i would say. their staff are only required to have a high school diploma, due to the fact that they have "their own training program" not to body shame, but to emphasize the need for employees to be physically capable of their jobs, 75% of the employees are extremely overweight and are lazy. the staff would yell at us and give us unnecessary punishment. i was FRAMED in a sense. a staff member that i took disliking to wrote me up for something i didnt do, and dropped my level. if you get in enough trouble, you loose the privilege to wear your own clothes. every tuesday night, 2 extremely rude and conservative older women come in from a girl scout troop, which you are forced to participate in. the only good thing i can say about the center for success is that i had an amazing therapist, ms. emily. she was the best. if you are considering putting your child here, i seriously would reconsider. i mean, unless you want your precious son or daughter to be mistreated. read more
