I have owned dogs for over 50 years and have used many vets in my time. Dr. Betty Riedel-Sawyer is without a doubt the very best vet I have ever worked with. She treated my miniature schnauzer for 6 years and kept her meds and a surgery as expertly as a pet owner would want. Each and every visit she took the time and energy to greet and give my Lola the love and special treats she kept on hand for her. In March of 2021 Lola had to be euthanized and Dr. Riedel was right there supporting my wife and I thought the whole process. A few days later we received a sympathy card signed by Dr. Riedel and the whole staff who had known Lola over the years.. Last month I got a new puppy and couldn't wait to get in there to begin the process all over again with Dr. Riedel. This practice may have improved but I doubt it. They were responsible for my dog's passing years ago. It is still owned by the same vets. My dog was dropped by an irresponsible vet tech. Although I had been to this practice since it's inception, the vet did not even call me to apologize, etc. It was heartbreaking. They did pay for my dog's surgery but he was 15 and to old for this surgery ( hip ). Buyer Beware. We transferred from another vet and chose Centerville Animal Hospital. At this point I have no complaints about the Veterinarian, but I have significant complaints about the pharmacy and processes they have for sending out prescriptions. Our dog was diagnosed by another specialty veterinarian with an auto immune disease that has her immune system attacking her body. She is literally falling apart. I have been trying for 7 days to get 3 prescriptions emailed/faxed out to a online pharmacy (mainly because Centerville Animal Hospital charges triple for the same medication) and have had no luck. Meanwhile, my dog is suffering. Tomorrow, I will have the specialty clinic send the prescriptions to the online pharmacy, but today I will start looking for a new vet who can manage the staff (pharmacy)as well as provide quality care. I would not recommend this Vet practice to any of my family or friends. Even after a year of our dog passing (which they knew about because they are the ones that treated her) I am still getting well visit checks for her. They are very unorganized and the animals they treat are more of a dollar sign then I want to help an animal. We took are dog in to get checked and after unnecessary check after unnecessary check they finally x-rayed her and found a mass on her spline and almost $2000 dollars later to tell me she is dying. I am just one of the many many case that has had a terrible experience with this practice. Nextdoor neighbor app has many terrible reviews on them I would check that out first before going to this practice. Over the course of over one year with Centerville Animal Hospital, they have repeatedly proven themselves to be nothing more than a substandard Vet. Clinic. Their failure to correct in house incompetence will continue to be their downfall until God willing they are under new management and or close. No business should repeatedly have to continue to apologize  for their non communication and/or incorrect scheduleing as they have over the course of a year. A mistake here or there is one thing but major repeated failures shows incompetence and lack of a desire to improve. My dog was supposed to get spayed there this Friday. Even after going there for blood work today and inquiring with them in person for the estimate of the cost, not once was I informed that they had moved my dog's spay date due to the doctor no longer wanting to perform that procedure of Fridays. My invoice from today confirmed the date, and their staff confirmed the date. Not until my husband had to go in there to deal with a sudden exam requirement that we also weren't notified about, did they disclose that they moved the date to over a week post the scheduled date. Mind you, this appointment was scheduled well over month ago. I assure you this is not our only incident with them but it was the final incident to raise the red flag that I can and should no longer trust my dog in their care, as it has been made blatantly clear, on multiple occasions, that the facility is not being manged well. I much rather my dog have another period than indanger her by placing her in the hands of staff that don't know what's going on 95% of time. I wouldn't be doing my civic duty by staying silent. Although my daughter has had good experiences with the veterinary care here, I had an absolutely horrible experience with their grooming department. Everyone was VERY nice. I was hesitant to let a stranger take my dog, but our groomer is no longer working and my dog needed to be groomed. I spoke to who was supposed to be my dog's groomer on the phone and waited for him to be ready for pick up. Amazingly, they called within 1 1/2 hours and said he was done. He is a high maintenance dog. My previous groomer took 3 hrs and she only scheduled one dog at a time. When I picked up my poor dog, he was shaking, whites of his eyes showing and he looked horrible. On the short (7 minute) ride home, several areas on his muzzle and body started to ooze blood. After we got home, I was able to inspect him further. His anal area was burnt, he had 7 cuts on his face and his paws were very red, as was his groin area. It's been a month and he still has scabs on his face! I am active on a breed specific forum, posted ONE picture of his paws ( which was not the worse area) and got confirmation that it was razor burn. I called Centerville animal hospital as soon as we got home and they were nice enough to schedule an appointment for me to bring my dog in the next day to assess the grooming issues, but they wanted to charge me. What really turned me off was that they said they could not verify who groomed my dog! I specifically asked for a high level groomer. Due to Covid, they said "____will be grooming your dog, she is a level 4 groomer and will call you after you drop him off" I have her name on a voice message, but now they say they don't know who groomed my dog? and they said dogs go through multiple groomers during stages of grooming. I was done at that point. I feel like they are just trying to limit liability My poor dog was shaking, sleeping too much, snapping ( SO not like him ) and not himself for 2 weeks. I have now invested in grooming materials and training myself on how to do this. I'm not sure I could ever leave him with a new groomer again because of our negative experience. I cannot say anything about Dr. Hayden, as we have no medical experience with the clinic. I do think, as the owner, he should have offered to see the injuries to my dog free of charge. I absolutely want to let people know this is no where to take your dog for grooming! My first waving red flag was when the (very nice young man) that came to my car to take my dog said a harness/leash wasn't necessary b/c my dog is small. The parking lot is very small and was very busy at that time. I NEVER have my dog outdoors w/out harness/leash. There were several cars exiting/parking. i declined and carried my dog to the front door. Anyway, long review condensed, my dog was hurt. My dog never had any issues with me washing/blow drying him at home or doing his nails/face trims. He now is much more skittish of the blow dryer, nails being trimmed. and it was heartbreaking to see what they did to him. read more

I wish there was a no star option. I run a very respectable rescue in Washington State. We had the unfortunate experience of one of our adopted dogs being dumped in a Virginia Beach shelter. Everyone worked with us to ensure that our dog was saved and brought back to WA. EXCEPT this clinic. We needed a USDA health certificate and I had the displeasure of speaking with Dr Hadden "assistant" while she lectured me on what was needed and how they were running low on time and may need to reschedule him, I politely stated that perhaps she should send me the email of what was needed from me instead of lecturing me. ( I mean I do this for a living). She was beyond rude from the beginning of the conversation, to the end where she threatened to not issue the health certificate at all. I hung up the phone, called the shelter and the shelter manager bent over backwards to help this poor pups health certificate so he could get home where he belongs. No one needs a know it all (well she thought she did) lecturing them when time is of the essence with no room for error. Just do what you need to do and get off your high horse. Would never in a million years take a dog to this facility. I see there is a common complaint about how rude they are and how all they care about is the $$$$$$$. Worst vet experience ever. I scheduled an appointment for a particular vaccine that I needed several days before showing up at the appointment time. Showed up on time, after calling to confirm, only to wait and then be told they did not have the vaccine that I needed and that I would have to come back in a few days. I won't darken their door again. A friend of mine walked in to find one of their extremely rude desk people reading a book about "how to up sell to your clientele." There are plenty of other vets in the area to not have to put up with this kind of behavior. That all being said, Dr. Hayden is very nice. We just switched to Centerville Animal Hospital and couldn't be more pleased. The staff is so kind and understanding including the front desk, the pharmacy, the techs, and especially Dr. Betty Riedel. She has taken our 12 1/2 year old Welsh Terrier, who was in very bad shape since we were in transit from PA for months, and has improved his condition 100%. We were so concerned about leaving our vets in PA who took such good care of him over the years, but Dr. Riedel has all the qualities that are important to us. She also deals with our young labs with such care that they behave well in the office. I would very highly recommend this facility for anyone who is looking for a clinic whose staff treats my pets as they would their own. read more

I am new to Chesapeake and I chose this vet simply for convenience. They are located only a couple miles from where I live. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful as were the assistants. The vets were also friendly though the amount of tests they stated my 4 animals needed was pricey. I have an older dog who does have health problems and I do want to provide him with good care but the prospect was in the thousands and I still have three other pets. For me, the cost was higher than what I want to pay, so I will be searching for a more pocketbook friendly veterinarian. read more

We have been going to Centerville Animal Hospital since 2014 and never have had any problems with the care for our dog. The most recent experience was good although the lab results were not favorable. We found out our dog had lymphoma and either needed prednisone or needed to see on oncologists for treatments. Two wasted months of my dogs life. Today a ultra sound was scheduled and I was told finally that with this they could determine whether she had pancreatic issues due to cancer etc and then treat. I was also told we would discuss food options as she wasn't eating nor drinking. I told them she eats a little veg with broth but her mouth looks like she's in pain when she eats. They take her back. After two hours the ASSISTANT comes out with some paper and tells me the vet will EMAIL me tomorrow? Wth? I knew the were about $$ more than really caring but this was to much. Um what about the diet? We were supposed to discuss food she's losing weight!!! It's not on my schedule the assistant states!! Ok did the vet take two seconds and look in her mouth? No she did not. Wth?? So now my baby has declined to mouth hurting not eating or drinking and I'm obvious pain and NOTHING!!! Just we will send you an email. We are not addressing the symptoms?? So ANGRY my dog ha good ne through this and we wasted our time. Then as I'm leaving the desk clerk says the owner will call you ( she's a Vet too) oh ok to address this? No about the billing.......PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR LOVED ONES HERE, the seem nice initially but are incompetent uncaring people. And yes I will sue if something happens to her due to their negligence. UPDATE this was yesterday when I had an appt and the vet couldn't be bothered to talk to me. We brought our senior pup in for an emergency visit for her mouth and teeth. This place isn't specifically an emergency vet, but due to her serious condition and the fact that they've seen her as a patient in the past, they were able to see her almost immediately. They were able to stabilize her rather quickly and perform surgery. Before they did, they were very thorough in explaining all our options and costs as well as giving us a good idea of what her recovery and quality of life would be like after. She was home the same day and recovered fully after a few days, just as they said she would. My mother is 73- years- old. She's had a beloved dog for 17 years. The dog had cancer and many other health problems. The decision was made to euthanize. This is never easy, but this vet made it so much harder! It was a grueling decision made over many months. On NYE her regular vet was closed, and mom's dog was in bad shape, so I called the vet I used, centerville animal hospital. They required a new patient exam, which I completely understood. But then, she wanted to do an ultrasound and other screenings (on a dog who's 17?) Think padded bill! We refused the extras but the vet seemed displeased to the point that she completely stopped speaking to my sister and would only speak to me. She even mentioned that people bring in 2 year old dogs to be euthanized. This dog was very obviously NOT 2! The vet refused to euthanize her until she talked to my mom. I totally understand that! What made me give the 1 star review is when she spoke to my mom the vet made her cry by giving her what felt like a total guilt trip. She tried to persuade her to keep the dog alive, even knowing that she had a poor quality of life, and was VERY sick. Even after we told her that the dog had ongoing treatment for the same problems that she wanted to treat. This decision on our part had nothing to do with money, and was 100% based on the desire for the best for the dog, but when the vet reopened the wound of this decision, she made my mother think that she was a bad dog mommy for not putting more and more money into keeping the blind, cancer riddled, deaf, little dog who could barely stand up, alive. Mom had spent thousands of dollars and many years caring for this dog, and just wanted to see her go with dignity. This was not the peaceful passing that we hoped for, and my mom is doubly devastated and now guilt ridden. This was really uncalled for, and it felt like it was all for the sake of the vet making more money. My mother is aware and agrees to this review. read more

We were in need of a new vet and initial visit Dr. Hayden and techs were very helpful and very nice and we were on the mend with our "Nilla". I would say she has always been pleasant, but as we continued care there was always an issue with the calls in to place a food order/ refill of medicine or to speak with someone. We had probably our last visit as we were concerned with and wanted to speak to Dr. Hayden about the quality of life and knowing when it was time to let our Nilla be at rest. Hard to let go and thinking lab results would help, we waited and when we received these along with a note from Dr. Hayden to call with any concerns. I did have questions and called and Kaitlyn(on more than one occasion) rudely answered and told me that Dr. Hayden was busy until closing and what was the question and she would relay and have the vet tech call me back. That needless to say after this long review ,which I hope people take the time to read consider all the staff in making the decision to use this vet. My first impression and last tells me I should go with my gut feelings. Rude staff. Since answering back - what I heard and hopefully you did record it- her comment when I asked if you could call me thinking you weren't in that yes you were and that you were busy until end of day and yes she would relay the message and have your tech call me back- I wanted to talk to you, not the tech, where if you check your records have a problem with filling food orders and when every time call in are very nice, it is the front desk- Kaitlyn who has been rude. Enough said, I could go on about the visit I made sat in the exam room for an hour and to be told I could wait or see you partner, someone who knows nothing about my dog. you answered my question and thank you for all you've done, but really listen to that recording and put in the reply just what she said. One more note you called at 440pm- I called at 1246 and assumed you nor your tech was calling back as usual. read more

Centerville Animal Hospital staff has been amazing to our new Bull Dog, Gracie! The entire staff is so caring and friendly, we knew we were in the right place from the start. After Gracie had a minor procedure and was spayed she developed pneumonia, the staff took amazing care of Gracie and Dr. Hayden personally called our pet insurance provider after they denied our claim. We recently moved here from California. I took my dog in for his usual skin allergies since he was born. Normally they prescribe antibiotics or steroids which I specifically told the Vet and showed them records from his previous Veterinary office. So she prescribes a different kind of antibiotic and all kinds of sprays and lotions that totaled $400. WOW! I was pretty shocked! I only wanted the medication to treat him. This Vet office is like a car dealership. They like to up sell! I just want something to help my little guy. After 8 days of the medicine not working, I called back and ask if they can just prescribe me the steroids like my previous office always does and works! They said, I would have to come back in and do all these test and pay another doctors visit just to have him looked at again and prescribe something else. This place is a joke! Don't waist your money. Go somewhere else that actually cares for your pet needs not their pockets! read more

As we know there is not a whole lot of options in a small town... especially when you are not too familiar with the area. I honestly believe that is why this animal hospital is still open; and the simple reason that people just don't know there is better. I had several horrible experiences at this vet office. One that has made me even think about legal action. I have two Schnauzers who are my loves, my husband and I cannot have children so they are ours. The first terrible encounter would have been during the holidays. When I had the groomer in the vet office groom my dogs- honestly I have never ad my dogs groomed outside the home before, but Mercedes my youngest was still learning. The groomer assured me she would be fine. So I agreed. (normally I groom them) I received a phone called saying that there was an accident, and that the vet and checked Mercedes out, and she was fine. Of course I had no idea what kind of "accident" so when I came in to pick up my dogs she had a huge hematoma on her eye. I was so sad for her..of course I wouldn't find out until a little later that she was now terrified of kids as well and was never before. This groomer is notorious for having her Kids on site. We are still working with Mercedes on trusting kids again and not being terrified. Encounter number 2 we were getting ready to leave Virginia and just needed some anti-nausea medicine for the dogs. Mercedes is the one that gets really car sick. So I had her with me. The Vet tech mentioned she was going to be due for her distemper soon, and I asked "is that something she really needs, she is not an outside dog" the vet tech "well you want them to me as vaccinated as possible against all possible ailments" . Really though not something she needs and you can draw titters ( I know that now AFTER, my dog almost DIED) my dog went into anaphylactic shock, all for a shot I didn't even want. The kicker they charged me for the life saving measures ? I mean really 400$ did I pay it well yes because my dogs are my loves...but both times they did wrong and never said sorry never admitted wrong, and made me pay for the bill- clearly they don't care about animals just money. If they did they would have just told me to use Dramamine for car sickness like a great vet in San Diego!! Who's opinion of these encounters was sickened! read more
