I cannot sing the praises of the BAH staff enough. I've been taking my pup there for about eight years now and they have always exceeded my expectations with his care. Over the years, my pup has been treated by Dr. Barker, Dr. Perkins, and Dr. Shields. All of whom have always provided caring, gentle care. The vet techs and assistants are equally as wonderful and seem to genuinely enjoy what they do. During the eight years that my pup has been a patient he has been through some pretty gnarly situations and the BAH team has been unfaltering in their care and treatment of both my pup and my myself. I highly recommend checking out the wellness programs that they offer. I have a wellness plan for my pup and it has saved me loads of money over the years and brings me peace of mind when needing to get my pup in for a quick, last minute vet exam for whatever unforeseen situation we find ourselves in. The wellness program is also excellent when it comes to dental cleanings! I've had my pups teeth cleaned yearly with them and am so grateful for it. Improper/poor dental hygiene is detrimental to our creatures, especially as they age. 10/10 recommend Barker Animal Hospital. read more

We have been taking our dog to Barker for over 2 years. The doctors are very thorough and answer all of my million questions. The rest of the care team is equally great. It is obvious to me how much they love the animals in their care, as shown through how they treat ours. Through our dog's major Cardiac scare, they made sure to work with me to get the best care for him. We are a military family that has moved a lot, and this is by far my favorite vet office we've been with. I will be sad when the day comes that we have to leave! read more

This vet is all about the dollar, your animal means very little to them. They will smile and put on a good show, but at the end of the day is pay, pay, pay. I was with them since 2018 (now mid 2025). During that time they always try to up sale you and nickel and dime you for every single question you ask, test you are made to take in order to get treatment and any type of subscription you need (they make you use there own in house which is more expensive than places like Chewy, if you don't they will require an extra fee to transfer each and every script). The only reason I stayed so long is I have an older dog who needs a lot of care (I was spending over $500 a month for arthritis meds). Oh, and for some reason, while my dog was under their care she developed a severe fear of going to the vets. The final straw was when she was being treated for a UTI (she had three in last year and had become incontinent for periods - the urine would stink terribly and you would know 100% the UTI was back - which required more money to get an appointment, test, diagnose and then get charged again for another office visit just to the vet can go over the results and you can get you antibiotic. My dog had just come off the last UTI meds and seemed ok till a day before we had to fly to the west coast to see my 81 year old parents for a family reunion. We have a house sitter come in for the dog and our cat, but I could not leave the UTI untreated as the smell alone from the diaper was horrid, let alone the further risk to our dog. I tried to get them to subscribe another round of the antibiotic after explaining our emergency situation, they said they could not help as the vet was busy and the next available opening was several days away. I reviewed by exigent circumstances and my status as a frequent customer to no avail. Their recommendation was to find another vet. So I did. The same day, and they helped out, even when Barker refused to transfer over my dogs medical history. Barker just sucks. read more

I would not recommend this veterinarian. I just moved out here from Reno with my 13 year old Shih Tzu that has cushings. My previous Vet had taken care of him for over five years with no issues, although all of the Vetoryl and blood work has costs thousands of dollars since he was first diagnosed over the years. They were pretty backed up when trying to book us, but DID accommodate me as early as possible because his Vetoryl supply was getting low. We ordered the meds through their online pharmacy, but they weren't going to get here in time for him to not miss a dose. They had Vetoryl, but unfortunately they didn't have the correct dosage that my dog needed. He takes 30 MG, and they only had 5 MG. They charged me $56.90 for the TWO days worth of his medications, and weren't willing to work with me in any way. (I asked for a manager who was not available at the time, although when picking up his 30MG pack of meds a few days later, the manager did speak with me essentially saying there was nothing they could do). Flash forward to our first appointment, they prescribed him three new medications, one of them being Otomax Ointment ear drops for yeast infections. After using these meds for a couple of days, my dog lost his hearing entirely. I called to schedule an emergency appointment, which they seemed to dismiss as it not being a big deal, but managed to get me in the three days later and told me to stop using the ear drops. They then called me for an opening the next day (which made me feel better). I brought him in, got to meet Dr. Barker and she inspected him for roughly two minutes, then insensitively told me "Yeah, it's a rare side effect of the meds". ...What? And so casually? At no point was this mentioned as a potential side effect or I would have not given them to him. That had me upset to begin with, but she told me it may be temporary so I just held my tongue. Upon waiting another 15 minutes or so, one of the employees came back and told me my total for the day would be $43. So wait, you charge me to make my dog deaf, then charge me again to tell me my dog is deaf and the meds are a side effect? Dr. Barker had left the room quite a bit before that, so I asked to speak to a manager (who had an emergency and had to leave for the day). I just swallowed my frustration and figured I'd let it go, pay, and talk to the manager later. I stood in line waiting to checkout, and the machine froze while I was paying. I had to stand there frustrated while the front desk was trying fix the machine (this took around five minutes). I asked specifically if this would charge me again, because I saw it said approved, and the employee assured me it would not. I didn't make a fuss because there were plenty of customers in the lobby at the time. So I make the payment again and take my dog outside to the car. I checked my bank app immediately and saw both chargers. At this point my patience was done. I walked back in and asked to speak to whomever was in charge. One of the employees who I spoke with previously told me there was no way Dr. Barker was going to be able to speak with me. I start (not entirely calmly) ranting my frustrations to this employee, when Dr. Barker made an appearance and told me "I needed to leave if I'm gonna be yelling", which I assure you 100%, I was not (please post a video if your lobby has cameras). I essentially told her I was done here, as another customer was coming in and I didn't want to cause a scene. Find someone more sympathetic and caring if you don't wanna deal with a robot. read more

I was looking for a new vet here in Virginia Beach/Chesapeake area. I brought my Maltese in to be evaluated for a possible UTI and pain. I also needed to get established with a new vet. This is definitely a great place. They are certified in fear, free appointments, which I didn't really understand until I got there. They have soft, calming music on and devices that emit pheromones to help calm pets. My 12 year old was calm and really enjoyed a special treat of chicken while she was being examined. She loved it! They took the time to listen to me and evaluate her issues. They treated her for possible arthritis, addressed her dental needs, and a change in her diet. They are caring and very good at what they do! read more

They gave our dog trazadone to give him a set of shots. He never showed aggression and in the notes it just says he has anxiety and hides under the tables and chairs. He was a 6 month old Dalmatian puppy and I can't help but think it was the stigma behind him being a Dalmatian that drove them to decide within 2 minutes of meeting him that he needs trazadone. Upon switching vets, our current vet was appalled since she said he's the best behaved Dalmatian she's ever met. The worst part was that the vet that issued the trazadone to him was super aggressive to both her vet technician and I. The vet tech he saw when he was on trazadone said outside of our room within earshot said he isn't aggressive and the other vet came in and you could tell she was confused as to why he was put on trazadone. The vet techs were all outstanding, and the last vet we saw was really sweet too. But the vet that prescribed him trazadone made a leap decision within a few minutes, berated her tech, yelled at my for softly petting his back then gave up and declared that he needed the trazadone. When I told my new vet she could not believe that a licensed vet would do that to a puppy that was only scared because a previous vet checked his stool with a stick up his rear. That's where the anxiety came from. But unless a dog is aggressive, why would you use a powerful sedative when you could just be a little more patient. Barker also charges about 60% higher than at my current vet, and charges close to 100 for wellness visits that my current vet doesn't charge a dollar for. Overpriced and the vet that prescribed him the medicine sounds like she is afraid of dogs. Before the appointment, you even get a text saying make sure you give your dog any sedating meds if they are anxious at the vet. read more

First visit front desk was super friendly but I don't like vets that go from 0-100 for tests. Was really just coming in for a physical exam due to a few I content and the listed off a whole list of things she felt put dog needed (our dog is very healthy besides an accident or 2). This came off as being simply money hungry. I would have been happier had she offered to do the physical exam and start from there instead of jumping into already ordering tests before even seeing our dog. read more

Horrible customer service! I was 12 mins late for an appointment and charged $50 late fee! I tried to call after being on hold for 10 mins to let them know I was running late and that their system to confirm the appointment wasn't working. I spent over $400 last week and this was an unnecessary check up appointment that could've been handled over the phone bc my dog had all the same symptoms. I will never bring her here again. They could've waived the stupid $50 expensive fee, which is the same amount as the cancellation fee as a one time courtesy instead they chose to lose a whole client. read more

Would not recommend using Barker Animal Hospital, specifically Dr Barker. I own a large dog who is extremely fearful and can react due to this. My dog has always visited wearing a muzzle and on medication to help ensure safety and comfort of everyone. We have also done Victory Visits with him to get him more comfortable being handled by strangers. These visits went very well and he made a lot of progress. During this time we had been seeing Dr Perkins, another vet at this practice, who he did very well with and she was incredibly respectful of his space and made sure to keep in mind what he was uncomfortable with. Unfortunately we did not have the same experience with Dr Barker. She, on multiple occasions, attempted to make me feel like I was doing my dog a disservice by walking him on a prong, which he is as per his training protocol and due to the fact that my mom who often walks him has an arm disability so it is for her safety as well. She also was very rough with my dog and used a slip lead to attempt to pull him out from under me while he was showing multiple signs of fear, ie. growling and cowering under me and my chair. When asked if there was another doctor that could handle him, since it seemed she was uncomfortable with him as was he with her, she got extremely defensive and said she was being as gentle as possible and told me to leave if I wanted to. I am a professional in the pet service industry and am very confused as to why she handled my dog in such a manner. I am not sure if she has a bias against my dog, but I do think she needs to take some more handling classes. This is supposed to be a "Fear Free" vet and we did not experience that at all with her. read more

I called Barker Animal Hospital with concerns my dog may have eaten one of my cats thyroid pills. I was dismissed immediately and told to take the dog to Emergency Hospital due to them being to busy. I then called another Animal Hospital I use and they took the time to check with their Pharmacy and told me she should be fine just watch her. I later stopped by Barker and my paperwork was ready and they dismissed my cat as a patient due to my dissatisfaction with their lack of concern as a patient. The Office Manager is Very Rude and could care less if you remain a patient. They also outsource their calls and on one occasion I was speaking with someone in the Philippine. there are other AniMac Hospital who actually care and have the time to assist you with concerns. I wish I could give Barker Animal Hospital 100 stars! I have a new puppy (6 months old now) who has really bad anxiety at the vet. We have been to 2 different vet practices before Barker. The first vet I went to was nice but I wasn't allowed back and he didn't do well there. She gave me some tips but I still felt at a loss and didn't really understand how my 3 month old puppy could be showing aggression. The second vet practice we had a horrible experience where I ended up leaving in tears (long story!). I found Barker animal hospital through a referral from my dogs private trainer. She recommended him to see a fear free vet and WOW am I so glad I switched. From the second I pulled into the parking lot I knew I had found Ernie's new vet. I was able to call when I got there and enter straight into the room so he didn't have time to get all worked up in the waiting room. I only waited about 2 mins before a vet tech came in and then only about 10 more for Dr. Barker to come in. Not waiting long is a huge pro when you have an anxious dog at the vet. The longer you wait, the more worked up he gets. I was so glad they were on time and prompt! Both the vet tech and Dr Barker were incredible helpful. They went very slow getting to know Ernie and you could tell they have the training in how to read anxious dogs. Dr. Barker explained everything to me and gave me recommendations for the next visit. They offer victory visits where we can come for 15 min slots just to get to know everyone and try to get more comfortable with vet exams. I am so happy and thankful that this place exists. Highly recommend coming here even if your dog isn't anxious at the vet. They are so friendly and knowledgeable. Also, it's VERY clean and a calm, quiet environment. read more

I decided to switch vets after going to the same vet for about 25 years. Best decision I could have made. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful. His tech was very sweet. The atmosphere was extremely calming. My Chihuahua never seemed nervous or scared. Dr Oswald was the best vet I have been to in a very long time. She is very knowledgeable and was able to answer any questions I had. She addressed issues his previous vet wouldn't. I never felt pressured into anything. Everything was upfront. I am a regular client, and I can say that this is a very nice vet for my dog. But i feel that whenever I would come in for my dog's appt. there would be new info on exams that she's due for and it frustrates me because I'm not aware of this ahead of time but simply when I'm there. Another thing, I brought my dog there for the boarding for the first time. When I came to pick up my dog the kennel assistants handed me her bed in a trash bag because she "spilled water" on it. I went home and took and her bed was full of pee. That showed me that they did not take my dog out to use the bathroom regularly. They injured my Dog during x-ray and he has never been the same. They refused to take responsibility after over charging they offered no apology and this incompetent crybaby staff couldn't understand WHY i was pissed off! Over a month later, my dog has never recovered. He went for a SLIGHT limp in 1leg, today he can barely walk on BOTH back legs! Barker is a wonderful new veterinary office in Chesapeake. Dr. Barker is wonderful, and so is the staff. She truly cares about the animals! She has a couple of wellness plans that I like. It makes taking your pup to the vet more affordable. They also use food such as frozen peanut butter, to help your pet relax and not be scared of the vet. This is the most amazing animal hospital I have ever found. Being military and then working for the military I have moved multiple time. The staff at this hospital is absolutely amazing with my older Pug, Penny. I also board her and our cat Daniel there and they take amazing care of them both. He seems to look forward to their treats and attention, instead of cowering behind me he happily greets his doctor and the whole vet tech team! He's getting older and they are kind and patient with him, and very willing to answer my questions. Dr. Oswald is a favorite of the whole family. Barker's is a wonderful animal hospital with great hours. I was having a hard time getting appointments at my current vet so decided to look for a new one and saw the reviews about Barker's. I liked what people were saying about them, so when my cat had a problem with pain in her tailI, I called them to make an appointment. They gave me one that day and allowed me to drop my cat off early so I could take my mother to a doctors appointment They explained the costs and kept in contact with me at every step and explained in detail what was going on with my cat. They found a bite on her tail and got my cat fixed up beautifully. When I brought her home she had no trauma, no stress, and the next morning she was back to normal. I am deeply grateful for the excellent care of my cat and for keeping me informed of what they were doing. All of the reviews I read about Barker's were spot on.
