This location is convenient for me. Now I do want to start off by saying after so long and several trials and errors, I can proudly say I am CCRI's Class of 2025! I graduated happily last month and that was all thanks to the Fresh Start Scholarship that the school provides it gives students 2 years free to obtain their associates degree to returning students and adult learners like myself. It was my saving grace, between this scholarship and Pell grants I got my degree debt free, didn't pay not one Penny thank you CCRI! I attended mostly online classes which was perfect as I was working while going to school. But I did attend few of my classes in person and I did enjoy the professors very much- they're much better than when I remember from way back when- they seemed to care and were able to teach properly without just reading you a PowerPoint. The campus is huge and has tons of space to study, cozy chairs and tables and a lot of common areas to mingle and catch up. I also was apart of Phi Theta Kappa the International Honor Society for 2 year colleges. The school has a chapter if you get accepted into the program please join it's so worth it so many perks- this is invite only based on your academic excellence grades. They also have tons of clubs get involved and meet new people and have fun. My guidance counselor Dennis B was awesome. He helped me with my game plan the whole way through and helped me succeed and he was my saving grace! It starts off great when you have an academic advisor on the same page as you. Also if you're struggling financially and think you have to quit school- don't. Check out your options and resources at the school, they might be able to help. Essentially they want to see you win not lose. CCRI was great to me. But I don't miss that huge hill and the horrendous parking, or forgetting where I parked because I was running late to class, that's the only thing I don't miss. To students fresh out of high school you DONT have to attend a university or an expensive school right away just because someone said so, CCRI is perfect to go debt free and get the same education as everyone else. That's just my opinion. Especially since right out of high school we don't know what we want to do or if we do we change our mind several times. Give it a go! Adult learners as well go back and get that degree!

Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) was established in 1964 and is the only public community…read morecollege in RI and it's the largest in New England. The main location is in Warwick and there are various other locations throughout the state; those locations are Providence, Lincoln, Newport, and Westerly. There are approximately 16,000 students and 300 staff. This building in Warwick, was built as a brutalist style; it was considered contemporary in the 1970s. I think it looks like a large submarine; personally, I think it's an ugly building lol. The parking lot is huge but always packed; it's on a hill so if you're parked all the way at the bottom of the hill, you're going to need to give yourself extra time to get to class. I took a few semesters at CCRI, and many of those classes were at this campus. Since this college was more affordable for me, this was the best route at the time. I had a good experience while studying there. The teachers I had were decent. My plan was to get my Associates degree and then transfer to a 4 year college. I deducted a star because the wait-list for certain programs was astronomical. I was on a wait-list for the X-ray technician program and that was about a 3-5 year long wait from what I recall. Overall, I think it's a great school to start your college career after high school. It's also a great place to take refresher courses. They also offer 1 year certificate programs. If I was still living in RI, I would definitely take some courses, especially if it's free or partially free.

I must say that the level of instruction was much superior to to that at the (supposedly prestigious) midwestern day prep I had come from. Place was older than God. The stone steps and stairs in the dormitory had deep troughs worn in them from a hundred years of wear. The students, as I remember, were rich New England types and kind of assholish. They had sailboats the kids could use, and I walked down and swam in the ocean a few times. Water was very rough, it was unsupervised, and I have no idea how I didn't drown. My roommate, from my own hometown, was stabbed in the hand over a pinball game. I guess it was bad because he wore a cast for the rest of the summer. Someone had the idea to bring in Puerto Rican kids from Harlem as part of a Head Start program. A well intentioned gesture, no doubt, but pick less stabby kids next time please.

The teachers are allowed to move in between private schools unfettered like priests in the Catholic church. The headmaster was eventually fired. These folks should not be allowed as role models for our children and should be thoroughly vetted in this regard.

We started our child at St. Michael's for 5th grade. Wish we would have made the move sooner. Their two day visit was their favorite of all of the schools they checked out because 'They actually teach you things and the kids want to learn.' The campus is beautiful, but beyond that, a few things stood out. 1. The head of middle school was great. She was engaging and immediately handed me two business cards. She asked me to please pass one on to my child and let them know that they could contact her with any questions they may have. My child felt like the head of middle school genuinely cared about them and proceeded to send an email asking a few questions/concerns they had. This was huge for my child. 2. All of the students played together. We watched a huge divide occur in 2nd grade at our previous school. Boys played football and soccer, and girls stood around. At St. Michael's the main playground equipment is built to accommodate all ages. Kids all played together and had fun. There was no division between boys and girls. I really liked how the middle schoolers came together so much. 3. The depth of learning going on, the number of options for a smaller school, and the responsibility placed, taught and expected from the middle school students was something that I knew my child would appreciate and could learn from. My child loves learning and wants to be challenged. I knew they would be challenged on many different levels. Things that we have loved since attending: * I love the Harry Potter'esque' houses that each student gets placed in at the beginning of their school year. This is a good way to bring together the 3 year olds up to 8th graders to cheer on their houses at different events. * I love the fact that field trips still happen through 8th grade. * I love the after school sports programs and how students are introduced to different sports even if they aren't overly sporty. * I love the fact that my child can stay after school for extra homework help and I can pick them up at the end of my work day. * I love how the school is a STEAM based school with amazing opportunities to explore including using the maker space to create solutions to problems and as a creative outlet to design things. * I love how there is lots of project based learning allowing students to have a deeper understanding of what they are learning about. The choices of how they will present and share their learning have been equally impressive and have forced my child to try new skills like sewing, stop motion and green screen technology. * I love the diversity of students that comes from the numerous military families attending from all over the globe. My child has learned about different cultures and languages because of this. * I love how the Choose Love program isn't just a bunch of sayings slapped on a wall as it sometimes is in other schools. The curriculum is used along with mindfulness, meditation, and self reflection and the students really practice what they learn. * I love how mistakes are encouraged as part of the process of learning and improving. * I love how the school has great community activities such as back to school picnics, ice skating days, parent get togethers, and opportunities to help support the community at large through volunteer projects. The parent's association is active and inclusive. * I love that foreign language is 4 hours a week starting in 5th grade with exposure in elementary school. * I love the science lab, PE and Heath classes and the focus on arts. So many schools are cutting arts and music programs. At St. Michael's you are exposed to chorus, band, studio arts, stage craft, cos-play and actor's studio. * I love how the teachers are engaging and so wonderful in their enthusiasm. They have a great pulse on their students and are really working hard to make students become better students and better contributors to society. * I love the administrative team and how they communicate with families and really get to know the students. * I love how encouraging the student body as a whole is. Their payment system is not bad to use, but they recently displayed a discomforting level of incompetence (and what I thought was sleaziness, but I may have overreacted). First, I get an e-mail telling me there is a bill ready for my daughter, but at the wrong college (Wellesley - she is not going to Wellesley). I sent a note saying she is not at Wellesley. I get a "corrected" e-mail telling me there is a bill ready for my daughter, this time at the right college, but the wrong name! (Olivia - her name is not Olivia.) Finally, I get a generic e-mail telling me to log in to my account. I log in (in early September), only to discover that in mid-August they had added a "returned payment fine" of $25 for a problem I had with their system back in early July. Did they tell me in July that there was going to be a fine? No. Why did they wait over a month to add the fine? Did they tell me when they added the fine? No. They just tacked it on to a bill for other (legitimate) expenses, and only told me about it when it was due. (Turns out the university added the fine, not them.) Originally 2 stars. I have asked them to take off the $25 fine. If they do, I will upgrade them to 3 stars. Update: they were quickly responsive to my request, explained that the university, not them, added the $25 charge, and said they would ask the university to waive the $25 charge. Overall, a pretty good response. I am bumping them up to 3 stars.
