My team played at 98th Street, Field 5 the other night. Question: when did the field become a sandpit? While I was in the batter's box I felt like I was standing in a hole. Anyway.... Prior to our game, the first thing I did upon arriving at the field was to wander up to the "grassy knoll" (near the field, beyond the third base side) and lay down on the grass. With arms and legs outstretched, eyes closed to the late afternoon sun, I said to my friend, "I don't have a yard...so I need to take this in!" Ahhhhh. I cannot describe just how comfortable the grass is here. It's so plush!! It's like laying on air. (What kind of seed or sod is it??). The fields are impeccably maintained. Major kudos to the park staff. Sometimes you need a quiet moment in this oasis to make you realize just how good you have it. read more

I walked through Central Park on a Thursday morning in the Spring. The trees were blooming, there was softball being played and the playground was full of kids. Although it was a quick stroll, it was very relaxing and enjoyable. read more

Central Park Softball/Baseball Fields - Beautiful spring day. - Baseball Fields Near Me

This is a fair warning: DO NOT participate in Gotham City Sports. This season, the Saturday league started on April 8th and should have been finished by mid-June. We're in mid-August and it still hasn't finished due to SEVEN rainouts (almost the entire full-length) of the season. The commissioner used Harlem River Park for the first two months of the season and has refused to get permits for a turf field from June onward. At this point, teams have made plans for other tournaments and vacations (since it is two months after the season should have ended) and will now have to forfeit hundreds of dollars to finish the season. ALSO, out of the seven rainouts, at least three of those were beautiful, dry Saturdays, of which Central Park grounds crew made no attempts to prep the fields for later games. So rain on Friday morning has washed out the fields for Saturday afternoons. read more

Our company softball team plays here weekly during spring and summer. they have bleacher areas as well as plenty of grass to spread out on to watch. It is well organized, nicely kept, and a lovely way to spend a few hours in the evening. read more

I have not played on the fields but I think it is amazing that there is a place to play recreational softball/baseball in New York City. Being a NCAA softball player, I was extremely happy to see the fields and will be looking for a rec team. read more

Maybe I'm too old school. I started playing softball regularly at the 63rd street Heckscher fields in 1982, but haven't been playing there for the past 5 or 6 years. I recently made it back to the fields, taking my family on a sunny Sunday in February, feeling the same excitement that I felt whenever I approached them in the past. To tell the truth, I was a little disappointed by the mass renovation that has taken place. No doubt a marvelous renovation, it looks better than some Double -A ball parks. But the intimacy was gone; the bleachers were all walled in, and a bit imposing, not easy to access like the old ones. The old bleachers were wide open and inviting, many a tourist or local passing by would just sit and watch the games going on. Now it feels like you need a ticket to enter. As a player you could sit on the bench/bleacher and be right on top of the game, now there is a feeling of distance from the game. As anyone who has played the outfield there knows, you could sometimes shake hands with outfielders from two separate games, so why take away that intimacy? I love those fields so much and have many great memories playing there. I made so many friends, spent countless hours and had exciting brushes with celebrity, including batting against Roberto Duran, leading off first while Michael Moriarty covered the bag and taking batting practice with Jeffrey Lyons, wearing his Boston Red Sox hat. I just think that the renovation was over done and a bit hulking. read more
