I've played company softball on this field several times over the past few years. It used to be a…read morereally crappy field (read: torn up grass, weeds, divots, shoddy infield, pretty much dilapidated and forgotten-- conditions not conducive to a softball or baseball game) up until a couple years ago when it was totally renovated.* Now, it's totally, shall I, say beautiful? Well, if you like turf, it's quite nice. So, obviously it's a no cleats field. There is a really nice track that surrounds the one field as well. There are stands for observers, bathrooms (which is a HUGE plus for athletes. Trust me...when ya gotta go, ya gotta go. Also, the bathrooms are clean, AND they have soap and hand towels! I was amazed.**), and locker rooms, but those aren't open to the general public and are solely for students who go to MB high school. The field is impeccably maintained too. I saw one groundskeeper (no, it wasn't Willy) who actually raked the infield when we were finished with our game last night. I guess my only gripe is it'd be great if the infield was covered to protect it from rain. It was slightly muddy at home plate last night. Oh, and since it's almost directly under the Manhattan Bridge, it can get a little noisy, so you might have trouble hearing your infield. So, if you belong to a NYC softball league and are scheduled to play here, you're lucky, because it's one of the nicer turf fields in the city. *This could also be called "Verizon Field" if you want to be all corporate about it. I think they gave the high school money for remodeling. **Maybe if I knew you better I'd tell you of the bathroom horror stories at most softball fields...flies, no doors, port-o-potties, or no bathroom at all, which doesn't help if say, you've drunk too much Gatorade and can't stand and pee like a guy. All the parks around our way was really crowded so we decided to venture off and find one they would enjoy. They were able to get their own bball hoop to play around. You already know I had to show them my skills and yes I still have it. There are plenty of shady areas to relax while the kiddies run around or to even read a book. This is the best spot for a child's scooter ride. The area really needs more benches for adult seating. There are only a few in the very large area. The fenced back portion of the park consists of a courtyard with rest rooms. There are also two fenced play areas, one for smaller children, with jungle gyms and swings. One side of the park faces the neighborhood Carroll School. Could this technically be the front of the park? The park is fine for use in the neighborhood. But it would benefit from an update and sprucing up. New brighter colored playground equipment, a sand area and more benches would be a great start.

Or, just relax in one of the chairs on the house front porches and chill out. Its a nice opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, and easy to get to by a quick ferry ride.

Governor's Island is a small island with ferries coming from Manhattan and Brooklyn. Lots of grassy…read morefields all over the place. I find it kind of boring until I got to the 4 slides in the lower part of the island. The 4 slides are very big especially the first one that looks like a mini roller coaster. The hardest part is getting up to the top. There are several ways getting up. Either you go up a muddy trail that has a sharp incline with rope on the side for assistance or climb up boulders next to the slides. These slides are a lot of fun and the best thing the park can get. There are several trailers of bathrooms for women and men all around the park. Most of the park is kind of dirty looking especially around the park next to river. It's just a bland plain black gravel pavement to walk on. It's not sophisticated or pretty enough like some parts of the park as you go inside the grassy fields. I did see some signs saying some parts of the island are under renovation to make it prettier so that's good. I will definitely come back to visit when they finish renovating. Came here for a NYCRUNS 3K marathon and it was all around the island. The gravel pavement was kind of hard and rough to jog on although it was flat so it was easy when it came to that.

The workers are clear when you get there. Bring a lock, wear a swimsuit including swim top for males wanting to wear any type of tshirt or a white plain tshirt. Clear directions when you get there but the website needs to be more clear. It reads like suggestions rather than mandates. Not against the rules because there needs to be order but just make sure that the website clarifies the rules as requirements. Pool is in great condition, very clean, respectful workers who were kind enough to let me give my kids their towels before I went back to my car to wait for them. I only got one pic. Lots of parking if you get there timely. In my waiting, they closed to capacity based on the number of lifeguard to swimmer ratio. Well run.

I visited Governors Island after some friends recommended it and booked us the QC NY Spa…read moreexperience. Honestly, I'd never even heard of Governors Island before they mentioned it! We arrived at the Battery Maritime Building at Slip 7 just before 10 a.m., and the ferry line was already long. Pro tip: if you have a QC Spa reservation, the ferry is free. Boats run every 30 minutes, and the ride is only about 7 minutes, perfect for anyone like me who gets seasick, since it's literally just across the water. With about 15 minutes to spare before our spa check-in, we wandered over to Castle Williams (aka the Haunted Fort). Built in 1811 as part of New York's harbor defenses, it later served as a military prison and picked up a reputation for ghostly sightings and eerie stories. Rangers told us to come back at 4 p.m. for the historical artillery demonstration, where they show how cannons were loaded and fired back in the 1800s. Unfortunately, a heavy rainstorm cut our plans short, so we just lined up early for the ferry back. I was bummed we didn't get to explore more of the island. I spotted food trucks and bike rentals that I'd love to check out next time. That's okay though, it just gives me the perfect reason to come back and explore this historic and unique island a little deeper.
