Our Mastiffs have both gone to heaven, but they both outlived their life expectancies at 11 years each. We are thankful to Doctors Bruno and Sharma who were their doctors. Dr. Bruno saw them both for their whole lives. We credit them with helping Zoe & Mia live such long healthy lives, especially for giant breed dogs. Our English Mastiff Zoe died of old age, but our French Mastiff Mia needed to go on different terms. Sending her off was maybe the most difficult experience of our lives, but Dr. Sharma was an angel in disguise in relieving the aches and pains that old age brought for Mia. Dr. Sharma was simply the best in a very, very, very sad time. Staff like Julie and Alex have been absolutely terrific over the years, in giving shots, nail trims, documentation, etc... they have been consistently friendly, professional and empathetic over the years. All the staff there has been great; never a disappointment in over a decade of visits. We now have two mixed breed rescues: Kenji & Lulu who are patients here. The fantastic care continues. We've been to other vets around the bay area in San Bruno, San Mateo, and Fremont, but if you want a great place for your furry kids, this is the one. read more

This review is for the staffing shortage at CV. I was there and Alex was all alone juggling phone calls and taking care of clients at the window. Some clients were very disappointed at her, and one even drove to CV to complain about being on hold for so long. It is not fair to have anyone be alone at such a busy office. I really love the doctors here; they're thorough, kind, and I've always felt well taken care of during my visits. However, the wait times are honestly crazy. Whether it's over the phone or in person, there's always a long wait. My last appointment was scheduled for 3:30pm, and we weren't seen until 4:15pm and we didn't check out until 5:10pm -- almost two hours here The wait here is actually worse than a typical doctor's office. The front desk staff can also be hit or miss. The older woman with curly hair is always so polite and helpful every time I interact with her. Unfortunately, the two younger front desk staff members aren't very welcoming. They don't greet you when you walk in or let you know you've been checked in, and when I've asked questions, they haven't been very helpful. At times, their tone comes across as a bit dismissive. If you have other plans scheduled around your appointment, I'd recommend reconsidering -- you likely won't be seen at your actual appointment time. Be prepared to wait! read more

Rica was due for her annual checkup with Dr.Bruno. I updated Dr.Bruno on Rica's anxiety issues visiting the Groomer and Vet. appointments. The medication prescribed has made a wonderful difference and improvement in Rica's fears. Dr.Bruno updated her prescription based on Rica's increased weight from our last appt. I knew I wasn't trippin. You gotta go to central EVERY SINGLE TIME, and PAY for a vet tech visit just so you can go get flea meds refill. Tri City doesn't do that. Centrals kind of a scam in that sense. And you can go through tri city for refills at Costco. Very easy process and unnecessary expenses. Got that info from our insurance. read more

We've been coming to CVH for almost exactly 20 years. Dr. Dunlap has always been amazing with our cats over the years. He is very knowledgeable (sometimes he gets too technical for me ), thorough, and explains everything in detail. He's always super sweet to our cats, even when our cats aren't so sweet. People complain about wait times at CVH, and while I've experienced long wait times, I've also BEEN on the phone with reception for a long time. They are active listeners and always empathetic to my worries. I've also waited a long time for our pets to be seen, but Dr. Dunlap always spends the necessary time with me so I know what's going on with my pets' needs. I don't mind waiting if that's how they treat everyone! Wishing the costs weren't so steep, but they seem competitive with the area. read more

We've been going to Central Vet for 20 years and Dr Vicky Bruno is our primary doctor. On occasion, we've had Dr Dunlap. Both doctors are wonderful, very knowledgeable, caring and have a warm manner. Our first two dogs were a Flatcoat Retriever and a Golden Retriever. Both of our dogs now are Golden Retrievers. All four pups received excellent care. The office staff is pretty stable which is also great for our pups feeling comfortable. read more

My experience was an interesting one today. My appt was stalled a bit due to an irate customer. From what I gathered, the customer was in the wrong and wanted to get his services for no charge. Well that's not how this works. The staff handled the situation in a professional as the customer raised his voice and was pointing his finger at the staff the entire time. They ended up coming up with a solution and the irate customer left. It was nice to see the staff keeping their composure. Furthermore there was a family in there putting down their pet. All this was happening at the same time. But everything worked out. Great job staff!!! I was seen by Dr. Dunlap. This was my first time seeing this Dr. this guy is so cool and personable. My dog isn't the friendliest and isn't fond of other people getting close and touching him. Whatever school Dr. Dunlap went to worked. His skills and assessment were spot on. He was actually able to give my dog an ear flush without any issues and gave him 2 injections. The experience was great. Thank you Dr. Dunlap and staff for the great experience today. The front end staff needs support and training. We've been with Central for about 8 years, and Dr. Bruno is very good. That said, it's become increasingly difficult to continue to be a patient here because of the administrative side of things. The front office staff always seems overwhelmed, will constantly tell you that they are a VERY BUSY PRACTICE. They may be, but even in a hospital ER, receptionists have learned to approach things in a calm and professional manner and be kind in their interaction with people. The CV front end staff is coming to things from a reactive mode which feels panicked when you call or interact with them. Recently, my husband sat on hold for 45 minutes, 3 times, to try and get an appointment. At the 45 minute mark, the phone hangs up on you. He was not happy. There has to be a better way of handling whatever is going on here. I don't fault the doctors or the front end staff; it does seem like there is a big issue with being under staffed that's creating an overall internal perception and mood at CV adding to irritability, panic, and insisting that they are so busy, and it's ultimately creating a negative experience for pets and owners. read more

My kitty had not eaten for over 24 hours and was just not herself. I called Monday morning hoping for an appointment sometime in the week. Because a surgery was canceled I was able to get an appointment to see Dr. Bruno who is amazing, the same day. She ordered labs and gave iv fluids. Dr Sharma is a wonderful caring doctor. I switched to Central Veterinary when Dr Rue decided to retire. This last visit was for my kitty who had scratched up her neck due to flea allergies. Things to know about my kitty. I adopted her from a rescue (SOCKs). She was found in Davis with a litter of kittens. She can be friendly but also ornery. You would never describe her as cuddly. Dr Sharma was able to handle her with little issue. She is just as good with my pups, but my pups are cuddlers. read more

Our dog, Api have been seen by Dr. James Dunlop for about 15 years. Her latest appointment, on Feb. 17 supposedly is a follow-up on her heart murmur & liver. However, Api had been vomiting all the food she ate 6 days prior and did not eat. She only drinks water and she's too weak to walk, just been sadly staying in bed. We shared our big concern of Api's condition to Dr. Dunlop and as always he's very understanding and do a great job of making Api well and feels better. He injected meds to stop the vomiting and sent us home medicine to have appetite on Api. Sure enough, Api did not vomit anymore and she started eating. She's very picky but ate and looks better. Sad to say because of our concern of Api's main problem of heart murmur and liver and her senior age of 17 years old, we suggested with a heavy heart to put Api to sleep. We can't thank enough Dr. James Dunlop and all the staff of Central Veterinary for the many years of great services they have for Api and their kindness and compassion to us pet parents. Each visit we had with them is at its best that even on a difficult situation they make you feel they care. Thanks again Dr. James Dunlop we will miss you in a good way and also FYI, Dr. James Dunlop is a handsome doctor with vast of knowledge and very big heart, to add he tries to help in all areas like recommending where to get a reasonable price for your pet's medication. Brought my dog that was experiencing thyroid issues and wanted a thyroid panel drawn. The vet wanted to do a "senior panel" that included all sorts of tests and I said, "no". I told him I only wanted a thyroid panel and he became angry, questioned my decision, wouldn't accept my reason for only wanting a thyroid panel and then said, " fine, we can do it the 'cheapy' way.". We've been taking our pets to Central Vet for over 30 years. Most recently, our 15 year old cat, Sophie, had a checkup with Dr. Dunlap. He was very thorough, checking her over for everything, from vision issues, weight concerns, dental issues, heart murmur, kidney function, and more. He spent a good amount of time with us, talking to us about our various concerns. Going in, Sophie seemed a little more nervous than usual - maybe because there were more dogs in the waiting room than she's used to being around, but Dr Dunlap was very soothing and gentle with her, which really helped calm her. In the past, we've also seen Dr. Bruno, and she too is an excellent vet. and the techs are great too - we trust everyone at Central Vet to help us care for our animals. read more

Best vet i've been too in the area. I have an extremely reactive Bichon and the vet and the nurses were all extremely familiar with how to navigate his anxiety. They were all so knowledgeable and very caring towards the animals. As i was waiting for services, i overheard someone in the back who had just been seen talking about how long they have been taking their pet there and how much they trusted them. Honestly, was such a warm and genuine interaction that put me at ease since it was my first time visiting. They were very mindful of scheduling too many vaccinations at once and they do dental work on site as well. Overall, this is SUCH an upgrade from things like Banfield that i feel horrible for not coming here sooner for the proper pet care my furry friend deserves.
